3.5 stars!
What you get in this book is lots of snappy characterizations and plot twist that make this author's legal mob-ties/law enforcement thriller so irresistible to her loyal readers and at times in this story the author wisely kept readers guessing about how the ADA prosecute cases or the schemes that takes place in the justice system. Some of this was interesting which just adds depth to the storyline with very detailed oriented material stuff on how the mob had links and connections to most US Government Officials in addition there were some nice bit of action and a little chemistry between the main characters but not much passion to write about and do think the author tried her best but it was more on just dealing with the court cases instead of being a romantic story. Okay ending and i must say i do recommend this to everyone!

Carsen Taite tells a great story. She is consistent in giving her readers a good if not great legal drama with characters who are insightful, well thought out and have good chemistry. You know when you pick up one of her books you are getting your money's worth time and time again. Consistency with a great legal drama is all but guaranteed. If you're a fan of Taite's work, Without Justice, is a no brainer.

Cade Kelly is a former Assistant US Attorney from Chicago. Her life is turned upside down when a mob family she is prosecuting sends their hitman after her. A bullet to the chest almost cost her life. Forced into the witness protection program was her only chance of survival. This Chicago hotshot lawyer is whisked way to a rural small Texas town to live out her days till the Feds can track down her killer’s and put the Oliveri out of business for good.

Emily Sinclair is the daughter of a US Senator and the newly appointed district attorney for Lawson County. Emily has been so focused on her career for so many years she has only just realized she is longing for the stability that only a family can provide. As the new DA, she has a lot of irons in the fire, but the one feeling she cannot shake is she wants more than just a career.

There is profound chemistry as soon as Cade and Lily meet for the first time. However, both struggle to get the relationship going. Cade is living a double life and is uneasy in lying to someone she cares deeply for. She feels as if she is bringing danger right to Emily’s doorstep. Emily feels the pressure of her work weighing her down and there is something about Cade that she doesn’t fully trust. Yet their time together is compelling and the pull is there no matter how much they resist it.

This book has legal drama in spades, a developed love story, and captivating characters. You can't help but like this book, its solid on all fronts and well worth your time. My only complaint is that I wish we had just a smidgen more time between the two main characters. A few more down moments of them with dialogue would have been fantastic. 4 stars

3 1/2 Stars. I'm a big Taite fan, so I was looking forward to this book for a while. I did absolutely enjoy it, but I thought there was something a little missing for me.

The story is about Cade, who is in WITSEC, hiding out in a small town. She meets the attractive new DA, Emily. This would be a perfect match on paper, both women are lawyers and have many things in common, but with Cade having to lie about everything including her job, their relationship might be doomed before they even have their first date.

I believe Taite writes the best legal thrillers in lesfic. I always enjoy her books, and this was no exception, but something stopped me from connecting as much as I normally do. I think one of my problems was with Cade. While I found her very likeable, her inner voice confused me at times. She almost seemed like two different people. The person she was with Emily, handsome, leather jacket wearing, confident with her attraction and wanting to be intimate with Emily. To when she was by herself, very insecure, reclusive to the point she doesn't even want to speak to anyone. I had trouble figuring out who the real Cade was.

The other slight issue I had was with the agents assigned to protecting Cade. They sure seemed to be some of the poorer protection, I have read about, with people in WITSEC.

While, I had these slight issues, the parts that make a good Taite book was still there. There was chemistry between the characters, and some good excitement. If you are a fan of Taites, or just looking for a good legal thriller, I'd recommend this.

An ARC was given to me by Bold Strokes Books, for a honest review.

In my opinion, Carsen Taite is the lesbian version of John Grisham. As a criminal defense attorney, her books mix legal thrillers with romance in just the right proportion. She's in my list of top lesbian authors (https://lezreviewbooks.wordpress.com/...) so choosing this book was a no brainer. I'm glad I did as this is a page turner.

The story revolves around Cade Kelly, a former prosecutor forced to hide her real identity under the witness protection programme and Emily Sinclair, a district attorney in a small town in Texas. Their romantic relationship is at odds with Cade's secrecy and eventually, her involvement in Emily's first serious case.

What I liked about this book is that while you turn pages in this action packed thriller, you also learn about legal proceedings in the US and enjoy the main characters chemistry and banter. I dropped one star because I think that the end developed too fast, but maybe it is just me that wanted to read more.

Overall, a very good read if you are into legal thrillers.

I am struggling to write this review. I just don't 100% know how I feel about the book. I found the first half of the book super slow and struggled to get into the book. Then when we finally got into the investigation of the case it went so quickly that I was a little stunned that nothing really came from it. I'm trying to put my finger on it and can only think that the storyline was not done as well as it could and the balance was a bit out for me. If this isn't making sense I'm not surprised because that's how I feel about this book.

I'm giving it 3 stars because it wasn't horrible I'm just more, meh, about the book and think the characters and story was wasted on a story that just went nowhere.

I was given this book by NetGalley for an honest review.

This is the first novel by Carsen Taite I’ve read and I was blown away.

Cade Kelly is in Witness Protection and has been relocated to a small town in Texas with a new name and a job, as a librarian. In her past life Cade was a Lawyer in Chicago who was prosecuting against a well know Mob Family, the Oliveri’s . The Oliveri’s sent their top hitman to kill her and she escapes with a bullet wound and new identity. When she literally bumps into the gorgeous Emily who has just recently become the DA for her county sparks immediately fly. Emily is the one person Cade shouldn’t become involve with but she can’t seem to help herself. Emily is looking for more than just her career and Cade could be the answer to her relationship goal plus she can’t get this woman out of her head but she knows that Cade has a secret and she doesn’t feel secure in falling completely until she know what that is…

I absolutely loved this book. I was hooked from the first chapter and I don’t normally go in for legal drama when it come to my romances but this had gotten such good reviews I thought why not and I am so glad I did.

Firstly the characters were written extremely well. The chemistry between Cade and Emily leaks off the page until your actually wondering if they are real people. As much as Cade is trying to veer away from any personal subjects when with Emily, it’s very clear that from the beginning Emily is attuned to Cade in some way. Even when Cade is trying to be casual Emily is picking up on something beneath the surface… And I don’t think it has to do with her being a lawyer, it's almost like they are soul mates and the connection is greater than they both understand. Lastly the sexual tension between these two was amazing, I could almost feel it radiating of the page.

The story is so well written that I started this last night and I am just finished it this morning. I began to be really invested into the story but also I needed to know more about the investigation into the murder in this small town that felt like it was so much more than just a regular murder. The legal jargon was not as full on as I expected and that was a welcomed surprised. Carsen Taite was able to keep me interested the entire book which in the past with some other authors I struggle with when the detail become to great and I get little bored and sometimes confused. The last 15% of the book my heart was racing and i was so caught up in the story i couldn't read fast enough and the ending was just what i wanted from the moment i finished the first chapter.

All in all a fantastic novel that has given me the bug to journey onto more of Taite works. I might even have to start with her first novel and work my way through.

Unequivocally 5 Stars…

Good solid read. There were some issues...seemed like extremely poor protection for someone in WITSEC. The relationship developed quickly. I always have a little issue with the whole love at first sight thing. But all in all it was as all Carsen Taite's books-definitely worth the read.

This book did have it’s moments, but it had too many inconsistencies to be enjoyable. The final straw in my disappointment was that the Audiobook had TERRIBLE audio quality. The narrator herself was okay, but the shifts in volume and what sounded like audio recording location came frequently throughout the book. At one point, it was amusing, because many of the audio stutters occurred during the intimate scenes and I could imagine the narrator having to stop to recompose herself. But then it became clear that the production quality was just terrible despite the scenes. Besides, when I looked at her other narrated books, “Without Justice” has very mild sex scenes compared to summaries of her other narrations!

But, getting back to the book itself, both MCs are mildly likable but never developed into the kind of characters presented by Melissa Brayden, Georgia Beers or so many others. Emily in particular is annoying. She flips between “my next #1 goal is to find a wife and start a family” and “I don’t know if I can have a serious conversation with this girl” and “I don’t know if I’ll ever be ready to reenter the dating pool” so often I nearly got whiplash.

Cade is a very sympathetic character (forced into WITSEC), and one thing the book presented very well was the terrible personal loss forced upon innocents in the name of justice. My annoyance with her character probably has to do more with the shoddy way WITSEC was presented. But she did flip between “I want Emily” and “I can’t ever be with Emily” and “I can’t ever be with anybody” enough that my annoyance for her overcame my sympathy for her situation.

The side characters could have been more interesting, but really had very superficial roles. The sheriff, the defense attorney, Cade’s co-workers and Emily’s coworkers and friends were never developed enough to have their own identities. Except perhaps Ash, the blogger girl. She was pretty funny and likable. I'd actually love to see a book about a romantic adventure for this future journalist!

The mob story was meh, despite really great potential. I was left with a sense that the climatic ending could have been so much better than it turned out to be.

So probably a 2.5* - between disappointment and meh. The audio was definitely no better than a 2* I was annoyed enough that I actually just returned the book to Audible as I’m writing this review. This is only the third book I’ve returned, so I’m rounding down to 2*. I didn’t fully hate it, so I’m not rating it as a 1*, and I suspect that if I read the book instead of enduring the frustrating audio quality it might have been a 3*.

I'm a fan of how Carsen Taite balances romance and intrigue in her novels. In this one in particular, the witness protection aspect is fundamental. Carsen Taite makes it very easy to understand how one might be feeling when their life is ripped away. You can't build relationships on lies so how do you fall in love when your whole life is a lie? One of Ms Taite's best.

Reading Carsen Taite novels is like watching a very tense crime TV show or movie - you know, the ones where you barely blink so you don't miss a courtroom scene, because she tends to get very detailed on those law/justice/trial moments. It's like having a lesbian version of Practice, and I love her for that. I was also very drawn to Cade character - and I loved those flirting dialogues with Emily.

This was my 15th book by Taite. She is one of my go-to authors. This one was not a favorite of mine, but it was still a good read. I feel like any book of hers is worth reading, and chances are you are going to be happy with the purchase. Cade is sent to small town, Texas in the witness protection program. There she meets super-hot newly elected DA, Emily. This couple had the making to be a favorite of mine. I didn’t get enough of my fill with them as a couple so the book left me wanting more. I could read another novel about this couple and perhaps be better satisfied. As always the book was well written and flowed easily. Taite is an easy choice for lesbian fiction.

3.5 rounded up to 4. The leads were interesting and their chemistry was fine. Not mind blowing, but fine. I would have given it higher marks if there had been a greater sense of realism regarding the Witness Protection agents and some other characters. Usually Carsen's attention to detail is better than what I read here, but overall an interesting story with some twists and turns that were engaging enough to keep me reading until the end.

It was a good flowing, well-written, interesting crime story that had me want to know what happens next. When I finally found the time to start reading this book, I finished it as soon as possible.

I also started to listen to the audiobook, but the narrator wasn't my style, so I read the ebook instead.

Carsen Taite has penned another wonderful story that keeps her on my list of "Authors to read no matter what the jacket says" Her characters draw you in as does the intriguing storylines, the anticipation of getting to the part where the guilty party is revealed just to see if you got it right or if you were fouled again. Am looking forward to reading more from her.

Not the best I’ve read from Taite. The story ultimately hinges on some unlikely scenarios and coincidences, which is always frustrating at the end of a plot that has suspense of any kind. I’m a firm believer that with any kind of mystery or suspense, the reader should have all the information they need to solve the puzzle, even if they don’t recognize it when they read it. Having the mystery solved by revealing details the reader would have no way of knowing is a cop out, in my opinion. This had a bit of that in the end, spoiling what was otherwise a decent read.

I always love a good Taite book... this has easily moved into my favorite book of hers. It’s a little more action packed than some of her others... I think her books tend to be more procedural, which I actually really enjoy. This was a quick easy read, the chemistry was good, the writing was great as always. I’m not sure how I didn’t read this one before.

When prosecuting attorney Cade Kelly becomes the target of a hit man her old life is ripped away by the need for witness protection and severing all ties with the past. Slowly daring to open up the possibility of starting again she meets Emily Sinclair, newly elected DA in the small town Cade now calls home.

While their attraction is instant Cade knows it is all built on a lie and tries to keep her distance. But when the past intrudes her fierce belief in justice overcomes her fear of being found and drags Emily into the battle for survival.

This is a great read, fast passed, interesting and takes a slightly different tack from the normal crime/courtroom drama having a lawyer in the witness protection system whose case becomes the hidden centre of another crime.

Cade and Emily are likable and you want them to succeed, despite wanting to shake them sometimes to get the truth out. The attraction is instant, the sex is hot and the ‘falling’ rapid, but it exactly suits the fast paced drama. The background characters are somewhat fleeting, and there is definitely room for a sequel fleshing out family and friends as well as pitting the lawyers against each other.

As always you can wish for more, more time to get to know the characters, more time for them to develop, but that is not the nature of the beast and I really enjoyed immersing myself in this rapid fire adventure. Suspend your disbelief, take the plunge, it’s definitely worth the effort

What an engaging page turner and educational too. I learned quite a bite about the law and witness protection. Making the story intriguing were not only the story plot but the characters. Cade Kelly had her life turned upside down when she had to leave what she loves to do and her life in Chicago. Cade is smart, intense, caring and in danger. Emily Sinclair is the newly elected district attorney and looking for someone to spend the rest of her life with. When the two meet the pull and draw between them cannot be ignored. In addition to the legal drama and mob family mayhem, there is a love story that keeps you wondering will they or won't they get together.

Enjoyable read but I can't quite bring myself to give it four stars.

Likeable characters, interesting story, boy, that witness protection thing should be used more often ;)
Well paced throughout but definitely picking up steam towards the end. The epilogue is a bit of a let down as it's a lot of telling and really doesn't do the rest of the book justice.

I can't imagine how hard it is to be away from
your family, friends and to your job. Cade Deluca is now under witness protection program and her last name is changed to Kelly. Living on a lie is the last thing she wants but what else can she do? A hired killer is trying to get to her, so she tried her best not to mingle and make friends on the new fake life that she have, well accept when she meets Emily Sinclair the newly elected DA, it was love at first sight for them.
How can they start a relationship when Cade's life is based on lies?

This book is nice but I can feel that something is missing. Maybe it's just me but if you like Crime/Suspense/Romance maybe you will like this one.
Although I like their banters and it made me smile a few times.

2017 Rainbow Awards Honorable Mention: Carsen Taite Without Justice
1) I loved the setup: an intense, big-city lawyer has to go into Witness Protection as a small-town librarian, where she falls in love with the District Attorney. The plot is well structured, well paced, and calculated for maximum tension. The characters are unique, and I loved them. A truly enjoyable and entertaining story.
2) Great read. Loved both Cade and Emily. Very well written characters. This author's word just flow off he pages making for an easy don't want to put it down story.

I’m a fan of Carsen Taite, and the premise of this book definitely drew me in. The end seemed a little rushed though - most of the story unraveled bit by bit, but during the climax of the story (which started around chapter 20 out of 26) things really sped up and sort of rushed through the suspense portion of the story. It also got a little mushy at the end but I know some people like that, so it doesn’t play into the 1 star off.

Overall, worth reading. Carsen has a way of combining romance with suspense, whether it’s about a legal case or a criminal element.

I’m a big fan of Taite, especially the investigative side of her books and I’m alway wishing for a bit more on the romance side or an epilogue that offers a better closure. Well this book has it all. I know it’s an older book but I find that it may be close to taite’s best work. Absolutely loved it, kept me engaged throughout and I’m quite happy with both the romance element and the epilogue. Definitely worth a read.

This book was provided by Netgallery for an honest review.

While I enjoyed the book, a lot of time was spend, especially at the end, with Cade doing a lot of legal research (and the writer spent a lot of time there) where she was with other characters to prove if someone was innocent or guilty. The 2 main characters, Cade and Emily really had a fun banter & great chemistry, but there wasn't a lot of time spend there. I wish there writer had devoted more time to developing the romance. Instead this read like a crime thriller with a little romance sprinkled in and the readers have to just accept they fall in love quickly. Still if you like crime thriller and a look into the Witness Protection Program then this is a good read.

Cade Kelly’s life revolved around her legal career until the day she testified against the largest crime family in Chicago. Now in witness protection, she’s working hard to adjust to a life devoid of the things she used to be passionate about. When she meets the smart and beautiful Emily Sinclair, Cade feels hopeful about her new life, but she learns no matter who she pretends to be, she can’t deny the pull of her past.

Wow! What an enjoyable book! Ms. Taite’s book caught my attention from the very first chapter. This book would fall into the category of suspense and the characters are well developed.

Cade, one of the main characters, is an attorney who witnessed a crime and needs to go into the witness protection program. Not only does she have to leave her home and family, but she goes from a large city to a small one. She needs to make many adjustments to this new area in addition to working in a job that is not related to law. Cade is always worried about being discovered and that leads to a lot of stress. All of this combines to affect her personal life and any relationships she develops while living in a small town.

Emily is the other main character. She is a prosecuting attorney who was recently elected to office. As one can expect, she, too, has problems that come with an elected office.

Cade and Emily are immediately attracted to each other. Ms. Taite does an excellent job of writing the love scenes—just enough, but not too much. I loved the way Ms. Taite builds their relationship. It seems to parallel the rapid suspense of Cade being hunted by a killer.

I have read all of Ms. Taite’s books and have enjoyed them all. This book is certainly one that I would recommend and I gave it a 5-star rating.

I was given this ARC in return for an honest review.

You know what to expect if you are a fan of Carsen Taite. As a defence attorney, she knows of what she writes! This is another winning page turner with credible characters, tight pacing and a well put together story. Cade is in witness protection and the narrative mainly follows her struggle to adopt, and stay faithful to, her new persona as a small town librarian, when she had been a successful lawyer. She meets and makes friends with the DA in her new town and although drawn to Emily, finds it increasingly difficult not to fall into lawyer jargon when talking to her. But if she does, then they would both be in danger as the crime family Cade is to testify against will stop at nothing to find her. But the relationship becomes strained when Cade disagrees with something Emily is doing professionally and Emily lashes out... There is a good thriller in among the romance and if you like Ms Taite's legal stories, you won't be disappointed.

Review copy supplied via Kindle by NetGalley

I was excited to receive my copy of Without Justice by Carson Taite as the description ticked all the boxes; courtroom drama, witness protection and two female protagonists, Cade and Emily who were destined to be together although they encountered a few hiccups along the way particularly as they had opposing opinions on the murder of Kevin Miller.
However my favourite characters were Brody Nichols who comes through for Cade and Asher Risley, a college student who aids and abets Caine, these I found to be of more interest than Cade and Emily – perhaps because they were less predictable.

Although the book was well written, the plot interesting and the characters well-drawn I felt a bit let down and I cannot really identify why. That said, I was anxious to finish the book and it was a light read so I am sure there will be many readers to whom this book will appeal.
