Julia lives in England with her family. Mills and Boon novels were Julia's first "grown up" books she read as a teenager ("Alongside Georgette Heyer and Daphne du Maurier."), and she's been reading them ever since.

Julia adores the English countryside ("And the Celtic countryside!"), in all its seasons, and is fascinated by all things historical, from castles to cottages. She also has a special love for the Mediterranean ("The most perfect landscape after England!") — she considers both are ideal settings for romance stories! In between writing she enjoys walking, gardening, needlework and baking "extremely gooey chocolate cakes" — and trying to stay fit!

I thoroughly enjoyed this sweet and romantic Cinderella story (with a great main couple). Heroine Ellen was treated cruelly by her stepmother (Pauline) and stepsister (Chloe). When Ellen was young her widower dad remarried and Pauline and Chloe made her life hell. They used up all her wealthy father’s money. They now want to sell her beloved home. They made her think she was big, heavy, and unattractive. Elephant Ellen, they called her. But underneath the baggy clothes she wore she was fit, tall, toned, and muscled. The hero (Max) was really wonderful! I liked how he got Ellen to come out of her shell and gave her confidence in herself. He was a real dreamboat! It was so nice, at the end, to see Ellen finally get her happy-ever-after. A lovely read by Julia James.

Zero-conflict bit of fluff, but I still enjoyed it. Heroine owns one-third of her father’s estate along with her evil step-mother and step-sister. They want to sell for fun and profit. Heroine wants to keep it, but can’t afford to buy them out on her teacher’s salary.

Hero falls in love with the estate and starts thinking about settling down and having a family. He is at first repulsed by the heroine’s looks and personality until he sees her jogging in a form-fitting outfit. From that moment he plays fairy godmother – providing her a makeover, an invitation to a charity ball, and of course the dazzling dress.

When he sees her before the ball, he is attracted and can’t help but marvel at:

“the taming of her fearsome, frowning monobrow.”

LOL – get those tweezers out, girls. You too can capture a billionaire if your eyebrows are on point.

Hero whisks her away for an extended holiday as he travels the globe for business. By the end of her summer vacation, the hero still thinks the heroine needs to let go of her family home because she’s hanging on to the bitterness of the past. If she hadn’t been so difficult as a child to her new step-family . . .

Heroine lets him have it. (JJ always writes the best heroine-to-hero lectures) The rubies he borrowed for the ball were once her grandmother’s including her engagement ring. Her step-mother and step-sister sold every bit of her heritage. Heroine returns to her home, knowing it’s over between them, and decides she’ll sell to the hero.

Hero shows up with the papers to sign. He bought out step-mom and step-sis – the estate is the heroine’s. He was wrong. He wants to marry her for an HEA. He bought the rubies as a final nice touch.

Depending on how you feel about make-overs will determine how much you like this one. There really isn't any other barrier between them besides her eyebrows.

Another great book.

HP has outdone itself this month. It has been dismal pickings lately and I really want to thank them for October's offerings!!!

This book was simple. A Cinderella type story with a makeover and an HEA. Many people might say insipid but it was a breath of fresh air. Loved the H and the h both. He turned her life into the life she might have had if her Father hadn't married unwisely. I felt them falling in love, I felt her fear is losing her house and her heart, and the H was just perfect. He knew what he had to do to make her believe in herself and him. I really loved this book. Hope you do too

This was a pretty standard Cinderella story. Ellen has been tortured by her evil step mother and step sister. Her step sister has her convinced she’s a huge inelegant elephant. Nothing like the step sister who is thin and fashionable. Ellen’s weak father allowed this woman to spend all his money while he sat by unable to stop her. He even gifted them 2/3 of the house in his will. Now that he’s gone they’ve blown through all his money and sold whatever they can find to fund their extravagant lifestyle.

Enter the Hero Max who is interested in buying the house they’ve put on the market. Ellen refuses to sell. But Max is very persuasive and what starts out as trying to convince Ellen to sell by showing her she is beautiful and worthy turns into a romance.

Ellen was the typical beleaguered heroine Cinderella type. Max was sweet if a little misguided. And the Steps were awful.

This had a very romantic ending.

A Cinderella for the Greek by Julia James was an interesting take on the classic tale "Cinderella".

This book didn't sit well with me even though I really wanted to like it. The story itself is a classic that I love (who doesn't love a Cinderella/Princess tale?) but what lies within the story is what bothered me. The big problem with this book for me is the comments about Ellen (our Cinderella's) weight. She isn't as thin as her step sister Chloe, and our male counterpart Max points that out a few times. The comments weren't healthy criticism's either, but he gets over her "ugliness" to be able to fall in love with her. It's that part of the story that turns my thoughts sour on this book. Everything else within the novel is quite lovely - the tale, the romance, the plot lines - it's all great but that little part. At first, Max does not describe Ellen as beautiful, but slowly he begins to love the way she looks. It felt kind of silly in my mind, since the description of her sounded to be nice (but comparing her to the thin step-sister...).

I liked that Max wasn't forceful as many male leads are these days. He's caring and tries his best (even if at times it seems a little forced). I liked that he was interested in Ellen's charity and that he seemed to be overall a good guy. The other characters (like the Evil Step-Mother and Evil Step-Sister) were perfectly evil in every way. The plot line followed the narrative it should have as well.

I felt this book got a lot better once it moved forward and continued to grow the relationship between Max and Ellen. That adds an extra star in for me as a reader. I think there was lots of potential here, to be honest! I'd like to read more by Julia James because I'm sure she has gotten better as her writing has continued.

Would I recommend this book? Absolutely! It is a really good book, it's just not for me! It is a lovely Harlequin Romance that should definitely be picked up if you love an ooey, gooey romance or a retelling of Cinderella!

Two out of five stars.

This is a pretty good retelling of the Cinderells story, but if you've never read Julia James before I would definitely start with FROM DIRT TO DIAMONDS. That story is really, really hot!

The Cinderella part finally made me read this book. It was staring at me since more than a year. I finished the book in 3 hours, not because I couldn't put it down. No, it was because I skipped a lot of pages.
The hero, Max was a good man; caring, compassionate, etc. Not the typical alpha male and I liked it.
Ellen made me wish I had her height and body. Sigh!
The stepmother and stepsister were evil and bad, Check.
The book had some beautiful dialogues and I loved Ellen tell Max about her past. Ellen was a strong character. Even when Max thought he was not giving her a chance to decide, she took her decisions. It shows when she decided not to g with him anymore.
Yet, the book disappointed me. As I started reading, I expected more from it. I wanted to see a confrontation between Ellen and her stepfamily. I wanted more of Pauline and Chole in the second half of the book as well.
It was as though, they vanished after doing their job. They should have been there at least in the end. Not as a mere mention, but in action.
Also, the epilogue wasn't an epilogue either. I was looking for something more than just discussion about the changes to the place. I wanted to see the changes done, to see Ellen confident, instead of still being doubtful about her body.

My Fair Lady meets Cinderella with the roles of Henry and Cinders played by Max and Ellen. Max is a bit of a prick for most of the book, he tries to convince Ellen to sell her third share of her ancestral home to him - wicked step-mother and step-sister own the other two thirds. He gives Cinders/Ellen a makeover and then the seduction begins.
Very quick read, no surprises or plot twists. The US$1.53 price-tag from Amazon was an appropriate reflection of the content. Average, not one of Julia James best, by far.

This had a lot of potential to be a sweet, but formulaic, book. However, the author made mistake after mistake.

The H was previously dating a famous actress and she was cited frequently as a physical ideal. So of course, when the h had her makeover, was there a confrontation at the ball? NO.

The wicked stepmother and sister tortured the h for years. Is there a scene where the h eclipses her sister in all ways? NO.

Is there even a scene where they encounter the newly-confident and beautiful h? NO.

Does she ever confront them directly for their behavior? NO.

Instead, the H does everything -- coordinates the makeover, administers justice -- and the h lets it happen.

Major fail!

3.5 stars, it was just thiiiiisss close to be my favorite!

A classic Cinderella love story with simple twist. Not too much drama but I actually enjoyed it. The story, the writing is already match my liking but the scene! I was waiting for one moment of 'revenge' toward the stepmother and stepsister but there's none. Disappointing!

But overall I liked this book a lot. Look forward to read more from James!

A true Cinderella story from the evil stepmother to the stepsister. I don't understand how some people can believe what others think of them and change their entire life to fit that mold. Ellen came out of her shell thanks to Max and I appreciate how he told her the truth about everything and fell in love with the real Ellen before he changed her. If only my life were like these books I read.

Yawn. Once again, the poor self-image of the twenty-something year old orphan who has to contend with the wicked step-mama and gorgeous but evil step-sis, is obliterated to smithereens with one poke of the Prince's, oops, sorry the Greek's magic stick.

Sometimes I just need chick lit. It was an easy and fast read, but not really satisfying and rather kitschy (more than necessary ...).

It was a very nice story. Both the leads were likable, but it was just a little too tame for me. I like a little more angst, zing and conflict. If you're looking for a romantic Cinderella story with a great makeover and HEA, it's just the thing. If you want a little more, it lacks a bit.

Stile scorrevole e senza troppi drammi.

Nemmeno l'inaspettata corte dell'affascinante magnate immobiliare greco Max Vasilikos, interessato a comprare la proprietà, riuscirà a farle cambiare idea... O forse si? Lo scoprirete leggendo! ;)

I liked it. I liked the characters and I especially liked that while the hero thought untrue things about heroine he wasn't mean to her because of it. He actually was trying to help her and was quite nice.

Hero did have unkind thoughts about heroine's appearance but never expressed them to her (there was a misunderstanding where heroine thought he was insulting her but he wasn't). To be fair though she was dressed very badly and put zero effort into her appearance, he was just not attracted to what he thought was her body type (heroine would probably not be attracted to a overweight man until she got to know him either). At the end though I fully believed him when he said he would still love her if she was an overweight Rhinoceros. Np.
