This felt so juvenile. You have a foreign Prince who lets his "friend" he's only known for a few months undermine and insult him at every turn and shows very little agency for it. The power dynamics between the two was so weird. Also what kind of foreign Prince travels with no entourage? No bodyguards? He's just traveling all over London willy nilly and organizing a whole excavation site by himself? That made no sense neither did his promise to marry a Sultan's daughter for the sake of peace in his region when he's not even in line for the throne. This is a HH so I'm not expecting accuracy in everything especially when it involves imaginary countries that don't exist but when the plot and the characters are so mind numbingly stupid just so the villain can have the upperhand for a majority of the story then you tend to pick apart a lot more. The world building felt very thin.

I especially hated how Scott wrote the shy heroine Evie, who can't seem to understand when the guy she's been crushing on for years can't stand her and openly insults and humiliates her constantly but she's too dense and "sheltered" to realize it. No instead the hapless dear is beaming at him because omergawd Andrew is finally talking to her! It was painful to sit through. Even more painful to see how the hero kept noticing it and did nothing about it but lightly admonish the guy because Andrew was his friend. A friend he's only known for a few months while traveling. It made no sense. I can't tell you how much of a pet peeve it is for me when someone is verbally insulting the heroine and it goes unchecked by the hero. Do authors realize how this makes their hero look? Everything about this felt like a cheap stage play with cardboard cut outs as characters. The villain Andrew was the most ridiculous thing ever who even got his own POV and sounded like his balls just dropped with how he reacted and processed things. I swear I was expecting him to stomp his feet and pout whenever he showed up in a scene.

But for me the biggest issue was the writing. You get endless ruminations and little to no action. I would say 80% of this book is just internal monologues with very little dialogue. For a supposed forbidden romance with a Prince this lacked agency and drama of any kind. Instead you get whole chapters of exposition on the most mundane things with the hero or heroine internally going in circles and questioning everything with "what ifs" just to drag out a scene. I mean 6 pages of just the heroine contemplating what to write in her letter to her friends doesn't really add anything to the story. I'm frustrated and kind of mad because I have like 10 Bronwyn Scott's on my TBR and I own 2 other books by her and I was so excited to try her but after this I'm not sure if I can. :( Only reason I forced myself to finish this one is because I own a copy or else it would have been a DNF. I feel duped because her titles and blurbs (and covers) are so intriguing but the writing is not good. And I don't say that lightly.

This was okay--not great, but much better than CLAIMING HIS DEFIANT MISS, so there's that.

Positives: I liked both Dimitri & Evie, which is a nice change; too often I read a genre rom & am either disinterested in or totally dislike one of the leads. These MCs had decent chemistry & fit together in terms of personality. Scott portrayed Evie's shyness pretty well overall, & Dimitri, while blatantly wish-fulfilling, had an enjoyable personality compared to other category beefcakes. (The story itself was incredibly far-fetched; but, again, this is the land of category romance, not RL. :P) The side plot was also much improved over DEFIANT MISS, but...

Evie's decision near the end was so bonehead & cliché--it screamed filler, like the book needed a couple extra chapters, so her martyrdom was tacked on. Meanwhile the villain was rather redonk, which isn't always a bad thing...but in this case it was a detriment, because Andrew's behavior was always so abrupt, with no justification or preamble. It was like Scott decided he'd be comically evil, rapey creepster, golden-boy-jock-turned-bad, sly puppetmaster, or Ocean's 11--whatever the needs of any particular scene or plot shift dictated. Speaking of villains, Scott's books all seem to end with the same scenario: villain takes heroine hostage, hero shows up, hero kills villain, HEA. And there was so much repetition of feels & rehashed reasoning by the leads, both via internal monologue & with each other.

Final verdict: *vague gesture* This is my third attempt at Scott & it's probably the best in terms of pacing & characterization. But there's a sameness to her plots & a disconnect with the majority of her characters, both of which turn me off. I'm not saying I'll never read her again; her plot bunnies aren't bad, & I can see why many harley fangirls like her style. But I don't think she's for me. If I do read another Scott it will be from Goodwill or the library.

meh- pretty boring with a too perfect hero and everyone was drooling over him. I thought he was pretty annoying...characters all made stupid decisions that made NO SENSE.

Never thought would get smitten with this book. I have re-read the book again as soon as I finish it (despite already sleepy and tired from work).

I believe this was my very first Harlequin Historical Book that I fall in love with, from the moment I read a sample on the Harlequin website.

Now have to read the book before this one (already have it on my keep on growing TBR piles!) before the next title(s) coming soon!

I really liked it how Evie's character developed. At first I kept rolling my eyes everytime she talked and excused her crush, Andrew. I just wanted to shake her and tell her to open her eyes but thanks to Dimitri she alone realized how wrong she was about Andrew and even herself.

Shy Evie Milham has had her eyes set on neighbor Andrew Adair for years even though he hardly knew she existed. Andrew's friend, Prince of Kuban Dimitri Petrovich, has come to the small English villaage for an archaeological dig. Evie, daughter of the town's historian, has a great interest in the history that is hidden in the countryside. She gets a job helping to catalog and illustrate images of their finds.
Andrew becomes interested in not only the history of the artifacts but their financial value.
Working closely with Dimitri, Evie realizes that maybe her attention to Andrew has not been as real as she thought. Evie begins to see herself coming alive with feelings for the prince that she never had with her crush on Andrew.
Who knew archaeology could be so hot and sexy.

First off, wow! what a villain we have in Andrew, he is egotistical, smarmy and as slippery as an eel and personally I think Evie needs a to have a sit down with a doctor for wanting this villanous creature, especially when the man that she should be fawning all over is right in front of her, in the form of the delectable Dimitri.
Oh! How much have I fallen for the Prince of Kuban, he is just such an incredible character, once you have got past his Regal exterior there is a kind, intelligent, loving and sexy man beneath who is just shouting out for a bit of love for someone to just forget for a minute that he is a Prince and treat him like a man.
The chemistry between Dimitri and Evie is just amazing is just sizzles off the page, every time they are together the atmosphere just crackles with pent-up tension and frustration, from the full-out sexy and erotic scenes in Dimitris pavilion to the secret little touches and glances that they share, it is those moment’s that are just beautiful and full of emotion.
Awaking the Shy Miss is, I am ashamed to say my first Bronwyn Scott novel, I really cannot express how much I enjoyed this book. It is fast paced and imaginative, the character’s are so well written. From love rivals, plot twists, steamy and sexy scenes that can make your toes curl and by far one of the best villains that I have come across for an age, this has everything that you want from a Historical Romance and I highly recommend it.
This just has to be read and I am looking forward to reading more from this talented lady.

"Book two in her Wallflowers to Wives series is delightful and sensual, which is very much Scott's signature. It's a romantic tale about a shy miss who finally gets the man of her dreams — just not the one she expected. Readers will enjoy the unique setting, quick pace and passionate romance" (4 stars @ RT Book Reviews).

Excellent story. Really liked the characters. Good storyline too.
The only thing that bothered me a little was that there was nothing said about the aftermath of the shooting - and the H and h just rode away. Seemed to leave a gap in the story.
Very enjoyable read. 4****

It was okay I guess. It didn't set me aflame like a lot of other romance novels did and it felt a little bland
