Quite a massive book, though very enjoyable. I would say my favorite part of this was being able to read all of these contemporary accounts/viewpoints of WWII as it unfolded, rather than looking back with 20/20 hindsight, as is the case when reading a history written afterwards.

An amazing collection of articles. I was fascinated and learned so many new things.. tragic pictures, terrible death numbers recorded, monstrous headlines. It was staggering to read articles in which people read at their breakfast table in the 1940’s.

As someone who loves history and WWII history this was such an incredible book to read. I loved all the different accounts of the war.

This is a huge book since it covers WWII. Two to three days a week I pick it up and read a chapter. What I have read thus far is well documented and seemingly unbiased. It will be awhile before I complete this book, but thus far I am enjoying the journey. I thank Goodreads and the publisher for making this book available to me.

This book is a treasure trove of knowledge for anyone seeking to learn more about World War Two.
It has over 90,000 original articles that appeared in The New York Times newspaper between the years 1939-45.
I have really enjoyed reading the articles. And it is a great source for research!

They say hindsight is 20 20, and this books proves it to be absolutely true.
After reading this book, I have a new appreciation for the tumultuous times that were the years 1939-45. And this is because of the fact that the book is comprised of articles that literally appeared in the paper during that time. So not only do you get the facts and details of these great and historic battles, but you get a sense of the atmosphere of the times. The fears, hopes, and brutal realities all come to a head because we are not reading a history book per se. We are reading a world journal on an accelerated timeline.
So while we know the outcomes of these battles from school text books, this book provides an inside view of what people were thinking, what they were acting on or ignoring, what they were feeling and even where they went wrong. And there is nothing outside of the articles so we are dealing with cold hard facts. Things where you are reading and knowing that it will turn out wrong, they would hope and try simply because they were reacting to what was occurring at the time. The reverse is also true, there are times where things are dire and hope is waning, but we know as a reader, how we prevail.
I must say it again, hindsight is 20 20, and this books proves it to be absolutely true. Because now that its over and we see the path that took us down that terrible road, at the time you don't see the bigger picture. You react to things as they come, realizing too late that dominoes have started falling based on the first one you pushed over.
The book is overwhelming at times. This is due of course to the subject matter as well as the human aspect that we hear less about normally. From interviews of victims, to editorial pieces expressing disdain or reprehension, to images of war torn cities and towns, the impact of the second world war hits hard from reading this book.
I will say that there are things in the book that can be tedious. Stats,figures, graphs, and all kinds of other numbers can slow down the book a bit. This book is not glorifying battles and doesn't shy away from actual facts of how life was during the war, and the ebb and flow of life during battle.
An excellent, thorough book that deserves to be more commended than it is, this book is an insightful, thorough review of what happened during WWII.
