This review serves for the whole 10 volume series.

I originally read the Viz published books in the early '90s. This 2024 reading was more cohesive and it didn't end the same way that I remember from 30 years ago.

Even so, I really like this series. It chronicles the rise of human space exploration from current (1980's) to several centuries into the future. The stories focus on specific missions and cases and the people involved in what seems a scattershot means. However, the medium and the length of the books does limit the number of stories and how much depth can be delved into. There are some weird circumstances that occur and decisions that were made in some missions that one would think a space mission would have taken precautions against. This is one of the pitfalls of reading SF many years later than it was originally published as current technology makes plot points taken in the story seem silly or dumbfounding.

The length of individual episodes increases as the series progresses. In fact, some of the stories, IMO, could be made into feature films.

One thing I found confusing was the final chapter. There were two characters that looked similar (as did many characters throughout the series, which seemed to be a feature of the style of manga at the time) and their fates/motivations were very different. I had to re-read the chapter to figure out who was who and why they did what they did. Once I did, it made great sense and became a good finale to the series.

The conclusion of the series ties the thread of the laser propelled spaceship’s story to its alien origin. Furthermore, the final act of the short stories deals with a future exploration fatigue and how humanity splits into spacefaring and traditionalist societies. An amazing series that deserves a huge credit for being so visionary and prophetic in 1985.

Delightful ending of all of the story arcs some of which I didn't even know existed :)
