While on a mission to exterminate a new type of Danger Beast, Tatsumi is reunited with none other than General Esdeath! With one last chance to win Esdeath over to Night Raid's side, will Tatsumi prove fruitful in his efforts...?
This volume starts with new danger beasts roaming around the Capital killing citizens. After hearing this, Tatsumi and the rest of Night Raid decide to help the Capital because they don't want more people to die. Tatsumi and Lubbo patrol the mountains late at night. Tatsumi leaves Lubbo and goes to the top of the mountain where he encounters Esdeath. Esdeath already has a crush on Tatsumi from their last meeting. At this point, an unfamiliar figure approaches both of them. This unsuspecting figure uses the power of his tiagu to teleport them to an uninhabited island off the coast of the Capital. Esdeath views this as a date.
The artwork is typical of Japanese manga style with black and white panels and dramatic movement.
The central conflict of this volume is the new danger that has come up with the beasts against everyone. The other conflict is Tatsumi trying to get away from Esdeath and back off the island. Both conflicts get resolved at the end of this volume. You have to read this one, if you have read the others.
This was another good volume, with lots of new plot elements introduced as well as some pasts revealed. I do like the bonus Joker Wheel mangas at the end, they are pretty funny.
So this volume has me divided, because for one this is setting up a big raid and you can tell it’s a stepping stone towards that. But also, I enjoyed learned about Esdeath and how she’s so overpowered. It really gave more perspective on her. Another thing was we got to see how her powers work and where they came from and that’s to be expected given how ungodly powerful she is. One other thing is that the new danger beasts were pretty fun, especially the giant one. I’m holding out to see how this goes and I’ve heard the story only continues to get bigger and better from here.
I'm not a huge fan of this volume. is too much. We didn't need , I get it, he's the main character, but COME ON. Not every woman has to fall for the male MC.
I loved the chapter where Tatsumi and Esdeath are stranded on the the island. Their complicated relationship really enriches the story overall. And in general I continue to appreciate the time and attention given to character development in this series.
I like how they give us background on the characters relating in tales told from one person to another and letting us live the experience through a visual representation. In this volume we get a glimpse of how Lubbock met Najenda, we get a telling of how Esdeath came to possess the strength she does, and we even get to meet Bols's family showing some of the Jaegers although dangerous are not all villains. However from the shadows a new threat has emerged in the Minister's son who is very cruel indeed so only time will tell what will become of him and his teleporting Teigu.
In the mean time with the new humanoid danger beasts on the loose both Night Raid and the Jaegers are handling the situation but eventually war will erupt and Night Raid has a plan to capitalize on it even if some sacrifices must be made.
My fave part of the book just might be Tatsumi being so valient declaring the sooner the danger beasts are defeated the more lives that will be saved...just to find out his fly was open the whole time and the lively bunch of Night Raid reacted in their own humorous ways. :)
I found the volume interesting. Takahiro is clearly attempting to make some individual members of the Jaegers not justhumanized villains but legitimately good people who have chosen to support the empire. The frustration is that there is nothing we've been shown about the empire or its leadership under the minister that makes it believable that characters who are as personally good as some of the Jaegers have been made to be would serve such an entity. Ah well, perhaps I ask too much complexity. At the level of individual character development and interaction, and the action scenes the team continues to excel.
General series thoughts: Mixed bag to the max. I find the overall conflict, including some of the harsh realities of the battles, extremely compelling. But I do feel the series goes too far in the graphic nature of some things that boil down to being there simply to show someone's a bad guy. The art is striking in parts and hard to follow in others. Attached to the characters and completely hooked into reading to see where it all goes, but on the other hand it is a rough read.
While I found some of the action a little harder to follow in this volume (some of these armored TEigus and danger beats look the same to me...) I thought the story was great. More of a 3.5, but rounded down because of the art.
Things are getting set up for a confrontation between the Jaegars and Night Raid. Tatsumi gets another "date" with Esdeath, where we get to see some backstory for Esdeath.
This shall forever be known to me as the honeymoon issue hahah. No matter how sweet Esdeath can be with Tatsumi she is totally deep down a twisted human being.
No spoil !
