Is it wrong for a grown A$$ man to have a man crush on a fictional fantasy character?????? If your answer is yes then dammit I'm wrong. Kayier has easily become one of my favorite characters in any series. He's as cool as a cucumber, can beat anyone up, and gets the ladies!! The first book is still my favorite but this one is a very close second.
I have nothing else to say other than I have a man crush on Kayier and I'm not ashamed of it!!!
My god this series is slow. The problem is that there are 2 thirds of this book that are unnecessary as the flashbacks have long since outlived their usefulness and the princess’ storyline isn’t anywhere near interesting enough to want to do anything other than skim through her chapters.
The saving grace is that the overall storyline is intriguing enough that I want to find out how this all ends and that on the rare moments when this story does deliver, it does so in a really big way. There are glimmers of awesomeness scattered amongst these pages, I just wish I didn’t have to wade through so much of the other elements to get at it.
THE DESTROYER series by Michael Scott Earle is one of the "comfort" foods for indie readers on Amazon.com. It's a series about an invincible badass warrior who was imprisoned in the ground for millennia and has been awoken to go on a rampage against an evil army of elves. At first. Gradually, the series has made it clear he's less invincible than he thought and the elves aren't quite the Nazi-esque race the reader was led to believe. It's a series which has the same appeal as a James Bond novel where the protagonist will get laid a lot and kill a bunch of things.
I vacillated between giving this 3 or 4 stars but ultimately settled on 4 because I enjoyed the central premise--which is the fact we're exposed to the fact the elves aren't as bad as we were led to believe. We also find out the O'Baari race have survived to the present time and show a serious threat to our protagonist since he has the same powers they do. They're also a bunch of jackasses who are determined to kill "The Pretender" for calling himself Kaiyer.
If you've enjoyed the previous volumes then you're going to enjoy this but the plot is starting to drag a bit and I'm hoping we'll get to a climax soon. I will say the ending was one of the best I've read in fantasy in a long time.
Another great book in the series. My only complaint would be that everything really came together at the end and you are on the edge of you seat when the story is over. I enjoy the tale the author is weaving though and am starting the next book right after I type this review. I wont go into details about the story itself but there is no way you can get this far in the series and not continue on, to get to the end. The author reveals bits and pieces to you and does a great job of building a climax at the end of each chapter, just to move you to another point in the story. Sometimes i have to admit that it gets frustrating but not in a bad way, it just makes you eager to move forward. Im hoping the 4th book leaves some questions unanswered so that the tale wont end but if does so be it, glad i found this series. Job well done on this book.
Really enjoyed this 3rd installment of the Destroyer series. It's a real page turner and much different than any other fantasy series I've ever read. Earle is a great writer and has a wonderful pace to his books. I can't wait to see what happens!
The O'Baarni come and immediately take Kaiyer into custody as a 'Pretender'! It quickly becomes apparent that he is in a different league as a fighter. These O'Baarni are not of the standard that Kaiyer now remembers his own generals and people being. However, he is not interested in proving who he really is. There is still a lot that he cannot remember and the whole situation on this world is in a state of flux. Those that he has become fond of are in difficult positions. As usual, MSE has to have his main male character have feellings for more than one woman. Still an excellent story!
What the .... ????? Ok, so my brain is busy trying to piece things together, and then WHAM!! That last chapter just throws everything out the window. Still some pieces seem to fit, so hopefully I'll find out more in book 4. But this book better not leave as a cliffhanger like this one!! Amazing tale, that just keeps getting better. My heart beats faster and faster, until I think it's going to explode, while reading some of the chapters. I'm breaking out into a sweat, crying my eyes out, or crying from laughing in others. These book are an emotional roller-coaster, but the story-line and characters just keep drawing you in, and making you want to read more.
This is shaping up to be one of my favorite series :) This story just keeps getting better! The challenge between Kaiyer and the Elven warrior in the arena is one of my favorites! So descriptive and beautifully done. I felt as if I was standing on the edge of the arena watching it! Just as I felt the ending was getting ready to wrap it all up... BAM cliffhanger!! Starting book 4 immediately. Seriously if you haven't started this series yet... you need to start now!
These books aren't all that great to begin with and this was definitely my least favorite of the quartet. Of course, having already read the 4th one before rating this one - I see some of what happened was critical for an understanding of what's going on - the first real answer you get to the story in general.
I will say - don't read this one hungry... the food descriptions are long and detailed. They don't make the book any better but will make you salivate for a five course elven meal.
I’m glad Nadea is not Kaiyer’s daughter. I’m bored of the graphic sex scenes now. They’re too much and not needed in my opinion. I also want there to be less flash backs and I want the story to run linear. I do like the story mind and the backstory of the obarenee and elves and the lore behind it. I like the powers and the description of the radicals. I just want something to go RIGHT! lol. Wishful thinking as that’s not how stories in “real” life run.
I thoroughly enjoyed this 3rd book in The Destroyer series. It's easily one of the better dark/grim fantasy series I've read, and I've read a lot in this genre.
The way the mystery unfolds around the main characters is absolutely captivating. The secrets and hidden truths surrounding them really keep you hooked and make the story even more engaging.
An excellent read that I highly recommend! I’m definitely looking forward to continuing with the next books in the series."
I am about halfway through this book, the flashbacks and the princess story arc are really making me want to shelve this one. I havent seen any value in the Princess story arch, seems like nothing more than filler. Dunno if i can finish but going to try.
Also doing the Audiobook version, the female narrator, is depressing.
Through out the series the author does a great job developing the back story since the main character just cannot completely remember his past. I just feel there is just too much sex though through out the series. I do wonder what happens next and enjoyed the books.
I am loving this story so much. This is a perfect example of how a guy in love turns to an idiot who'd burn cities and kill his friends just to be with a woman he loves. I am excited to read the last installment.
