Yoshihiro Togashi (冨樫義博) is a manga artist. Credited in Chinese translations as Fu Jian Yi Bo.
He began drawing manga at an early age; while he attended college, the publisher Shueisha recognized his talent. Togashi has authored numerous manga series in different genres during the past three decades. He is perhaps best known for writing and illustrating the YuYu Hakusho and Hunter × Hunter series, both of which have been published in the popular Weekly Shōnen Jump magazine. Togashi is married to Naoko Takeuchi, the author of Sailor Moon.
He's a pretty little monster who is like aged 12 but then again he's a motherfu*kin beast. All you must know about him is that he is a talented baby assassin who just so isn't very fond of going round killing people. He attacks with his bare hands or his yo-yo (that's how badass the kid is). I keep saying kid but he ain't no ordinary one. His family are the Zoldycks who are this pretty cool family of assassins. The best assassins. His brothers are pretentions brats who don't share any affection for him. He is the strongest, most powerful kid in the family. He had no friends until he met Gon and that changed everything. The murderers didn't even allow Killua to have friends. Can you imagine that, going like ''yo mom I met a cool guy today he is extra chill'' and she replies ''u piece of s*it don't you know any better than making acquaintance with other people''. He's imune to pain and poison. He's basically the boss. The best manga character I've ever come across.
Eh... I enjoy the series in general, but this particular volume was just okay. Dealing with the fallout from the hunter challenge finale in the previous book, and then stalling for a bit with some silly challenges the characters have to go through before they can go on with their adventure. A bit too much was borrowed from Dragon Ball here, too, like wearing heavy vests for training to get stronger, and the several-month gap for other characters to train and do their thing before they all meet again in a certain place at a certain time to take up on a harder challenge. It's all good fun, I just feel like I've seen it before, and I want to get to some actual adventures instead of all the training that is going on in the book right now.
Nie lubię tych początkowych wątków i właściwie nie wiem jak bym traktował te serię, jakbym nie widział wcześniej anime. Na razie jest wciąż raczej średnio.
A massive shock comes for Gon’s friend Killua in the form of his older brother who secretly entered the Hunter Exam in an attempt from their family to bring him home whether he wants to or not as they see him as “unable to make friends” and to keep their assassin history alive. Now the three must make their way to his family’s mansion and a cake walk it won’t be when they encounter heavily trained staff and intimidating parents, yet they’re determined to rescue their friend who wants to follow his own path. A (100%/Outstanding)
This was such a cool volume, as we have Gon learning of Killua and they get their hunters license and go to meet Killua and as they go to the Zoldyck estate they are prevented from entering, seems like there will be obstacles of gates, butlers, dogs and the overall family drama and yes the butler beats on Gon and there is waiting time but this dedication of Gon to meet his friend is something and we learn whats happening with Killua and Gon meets him, and the whole thing was so lovely to read, it just tugs at your heart, the innocence of these boys, while others will meet at Sept 1, 6 months from now, Gon and Killua go to Heaven's Arena to earn some quick buck, its gonna be fun now! Great volume and shows friendship, commitment, never letting up and pure action and the art is just simple and gorgeous as always!
Togashi starting to flex a little on some of the underlying themes he’ll explore in the future. It’s subtle here, likely not that noticeable on a first read. At this point we still got what feels like a competent shonen. But there’s so much building going on here. Can’t wait to continue to see how the manga differs or is similar to the Anime
I really didn't expect for to be the only one who didn't pass the Hunter exam, but I suppose it means that they're going to try for their licence again down the track, right?
With Killua's disappearance immediately following the exams, I wasn't sure when he'd turn up next but having Gon and co. immediately go after him was pretty great. Finding out that he basically lives in a spooky mansion on top of an extinct volcano (...one that apparently has a torture chamber) is weird as hell, but also 100% suits him and I love the lengths that Gon and co. went on to go and find him c:
The Hunter exam arc wrapped up pretty well, giving Killua more nuance than your typical Hiei/ Vegeta type of character. It also transitioned smoothly into the next arc. It did kinda of stumble a bit with pointless exposition about how this world's versions of phones and the internet work. Plus the stuff with Killua's brother didn't amount to anything, so much of this volume felt like a waste of time that didn't do much for the overarching story and offered little value in and of itself.
In particular, the Killua rescue arc started out kind of dull, got a bit more interesting as time went on, and then got dropped outright halfway through. This feels more like Togashi's poor planning than some sort of subversion of expectations. It's the sort of thing that reminds me of the later parts of Yu Yu Hakusho, which is not good.
This book would probably be a 1/5 if it weren't for the strong beginning. The more I think about this book, the less I like it. It didn't do the sort of interesting or clever things the rest of the series did.
I had more to say, but my laptop died and I lost my first review of this book. So fuck it.
"I'm fed up with killing. I just want to be friends with Gon. I want to have fun, like a normal kid"
It was heartbreaking how he craved for some friends and now that he found that in Gon, his own family refused to give him that. That is why I gave him so much empathy the most in this series. To think that he was a trained assassin since he was literally a baby, sent in a battle arena on his own when he was six years old and left there for two years! He's a very deep and likable character, getting even more likable as we get to know how complex he is. I always found it disturbing yet weirdly interesting to see the dysfunctional Zoldyck family.
This is the real start of a very sweet and touching friendship between Killua and Gon. And they are about to discover some serious shit together from this point.
After successfully completing the Hunter exams, Gon and his crew are free to travel the world and pursue their goals as they please. Before moving on with their lives though, they want to pay their friend Killua a visit at his manor after he was expelled from the exams for insolence. Killua comes from a family of assassins who live in a mansion of horrors, however, so the simple task of paying their friend a much needed visit proves to be quite the fearsome challenge.
Good volume. I wasn't sure where it was going at first but it ended up being surprisingly suspenseful and creepy. After witnessing what kind of place and what kind of family Killua grew up with, it’s not hard to understand why he’s a bit emotionally unstable and messed up in the head.
Watching Gon and his crew fight their way through a horrorfest to see their friend and seeing Killua try to break free from the shackles of his twisted family was quite the treat.
After going their separate ways to pursue their original goals, the squad promises to meet again in the future once they’ve made their peace. In the meantime, it looks like Killua wants to help Gon get stronger so he can get some payback on Hisoka for humiliating him during the Hunter exams.
In this volume, the Arena arc comes to an end. After Gon wakes up, he learns that only 7 of the 9 examinees go on to become hunters: Gon, Leorio, Kurapika, Illumi/Gitarakuru, Hisoka, Hanzo, and Pokkle. Killua is, unfortunately, disqualified after killing Bodoro. Then begins the Zoldyck family arc. Gon, Leorio, and Kurapika go on to look for Killua because he left home after being made to believe by Illumi that it’s impossible for him to have friends and being disqualified. At the end of the volume, only Gon and Killua remain together. Leorio and Kurapika are going to follow their own passions. Thus, begins the Heaven’s Arena arc.
There is a lot going on this volume, but in a good way. The characters have matured and are growing more as their own people. I’m excited to read the Heaven’s Arena arc and see what it has in store for Killua, Gon, and the other characters.
The end of my multi-volume binge read... for now. I originally thought, oh, I really shouldn't have gotten so many at once, it will take a while to motivate myself to finish them. Then I ended up getting sucked into the story and I wish I'd gotten a few more from the library at once. Oops.
edit: oh dear, Goodreads made me solve captcha to post this. The consequences of a manga mini-binge, I guess.
This volume had a bit of a convenient training arc shoved in, but it was pretty short. And the stuff about Killua's family was very very cool. Killua's relationship with his Dad has me very curious. The end of the volume had me all ready for a time skip, but it looks like we're staying with Gon and Killua for another tournament/training arc combo in the Heavens Arena.
Three stars is lower than previous books for me and feels almost harsh, but this book had potential to explore a character deeper and it didn’t go far enough before ending with a tease for what’s to come. I feel like the books could go in so many directions at this point and I’m still along for the ride for now!
More on Killua and his family as everyone just sort of... does training stuff for a while, before going on to do more training stuff, and then, uh... yeah some of the stuff with Killua and his dad is neat but this is all housekeeping and setting up for the future arc(s) not much to really see here.
killua saying that all he wants is to be friends with gon is in the top five moments of this entire series, if you disagree you can argue with the wall
also the closer we get to the phantom troupe the more i feel like i need to watch the anime again
