A sad girl should never pick up a strange old photograph and go for an interview in a chilly remote house. Wants and wishes can be dangerous for the heartbroken and there is no knowing who or what you will let in. What we will do to see the dead again -- what will prey on our grief. A peculiar 10K slipstream paranormal short story.
I don't read a lot of short stories, because best case scenario, they leave me wanting more. (Worst case scenario, there's not enough time for anything to really happen, so they seem kind of pointless.)
BUT... I'm a sucker for a ghost story. And I am so glad I read this one.
A grief-stricken girl answers a house-sitting ad. Something about the house on the beach is off, or is it all in her head? The writing style is frenetic, almost disorienting at times, which absolutely adds to the atmosphere of the story.
I don't want to say much more for fear of giving anything away, but if you're at all a fan of paranormal suspense, give this story a read. And then rejoice because the story continues in The Devastation Agency, which I am downloading to my Kindle right. now.
Some of my favorite stories are the ones that explore the links between human emotions like grief, and inhuman horrors that play off it. A narrator vulnerable not only to her own grief, but also to cruelly manipulative family members, finds herself vulnerable to other forces entirely -- just as she finds herself with a good reason to live. A strong series introduction that leaves me looking forward to more.
A young woman flees from home, finds herself in desperate need of money. She sees an ad in a local place- to be a house-sitter. All is well and good until she begins to suspect the house. She can't seem to destroy a certain photograph, and it's obvious that something is going on. Will she uncover it, and survive?
I felt that this book had the makings of a sinister novella, but not a lot happened: the photograph relentlessly showing up, the coincidences, the empty, children's nursery...That was it. This book could have done with more disturbing content.
