Enter a poignant and timely dystopia where the religion and governments of the world have been overthrown by the IDEAL, the ruling party of the United States of the Common Good. A brutal dictatorship which stamped out any resistance in Last Straw Protests, the IDEAL punishes anyone who’d dare to think outside of their preapproved box. The only belief systems allowed are those deemed acceptable for whatever is considered the common good.
Meet Aurora Alvarez a misfit trying to deal with an overbearing mother who’s preoccupied with her weight, an unrequited crush and her place amongst her peers. Aurora is a normal teenager with normal problems making due in an oppressive society, until her life takes a turn for the fantastic. Drawn in by the call of a conch shell she encounters a thirty food giant named Otus warning of an apocalyptic event that Only Aurora can help prevent.
What struck me most about this novel was the polar contrast of many elements. The IDEAL is a society void of religion brutally censoring even the most basic levels of faith. When the heroes encounter a hidden religious society they are met with almost fundamentalist zeal. Aurora is the smart yet frumpy girl with the most normal of problems, and yet she has a great destiny ahead of her and possibly a bit of divinity. Otus is almost childlike in his mannerisms yet he has a deep wisdom about him. This is a world of extremes and so often when religion is invoked the truth lies somewhere in the middle. The Assumption is book one in The Hyothesis of Giant. The author has created a fascinating world and I look forward to where Aurora, Otus and the rest of the companions will go on the rest of their Journey.
