Katie Morag #9

Katie Morag and the Dancing Class

Rate this book
Katie Morag has better things to do on a Saturday morning than go to dancing class, but Grannie Island says ballet will be good for her coordination and Granma Mainland longs to see her in a pretty dress and her new pink pumps, instead of those dreadful wellies! Somehow, Katie Morag is always late for ballet class and one day she's so late that the tap dancing class has already started! Katie Morag would love to tap dance with the Big Boy Cousins, but she needs special shoes and she can't possibly ask Granma Mainland for another pair. Luckily Grannie Island finds a way to customize Katie Morag's wellies and when she's the star of the show at the Dance Performance, even Granma Mainland can't be cross!

Although she was born in Gourock, and attended the Edinburgh College of Art, the highlands and islands of Scotland have always been Mairi Hedderwick's true home. In 1962 she settled on Coll, where she raised her family and taught art at primary school. Her first home on Coll had no electricity or running water, and the nearest neighbor lived two miles away.

Mairi Hedderwick is the author and illustrator of the much loved Katie Morag series of children's books the first of which was published in 1984.

Hedderwick has also written and illustrated several travel books, including Highland Journey and An Eye on the Hebrides.

All Mairie Hedderwick's Katie Morag books are beautifully conceived and simply and beautifully written. The illustrations of the Isle of Struay are detailed and wonderful - they draw the children right into the island world. Dancing Class is up there with the rest: it teaches children to gives things a try. I have seen it used as a focus for topic based lessons in year 2 and the children loved learning about the island and following Katie Morag in her adventures.
