Imogene Taggert is dead. Murdered. But her death is only the beginning. After being carried through strange worlds to claim her birthright, a demonic heritage that will define her entire future, she must learn to abandon who she was. Her newfound purpose? To become a Reaper, a demon charged with keeping the peace for a magical underworld rife to explode into warfare on a moment's notice. Abel's had millenia to work as an incubus, and needs a change. When he's tasked with mentoring Imogene to prepare her for her new role, he can't help but get attached to the fragile young demon taking her first steps into a world that would see them dead before seeing them free agents. But dalliances are forbidden, and Imogene's far beyond his ability to protect her. As tensions escalate, Gene and Abel must rely on each other more than ever, despite the sweet danger that lurks in every stolen touch or tender glance. There's no place for friendship or love here, and that means there's no place for them. But that doesn't mean they won't try to make one, anyways.
After already being introduced to the complicated relationship of Gene and Abel in Reaper, I can honestly say I was thoroughly excited to read about their beginning. A harsh and bitter story for Gene to be sure, making her both fragile and courageous (layered like and onion). K De Long's writing was amazingly emotional and wrought with pain and terror while showcasing the atrocities that Gene endured. The author's superior skill at weaving words makes the reader feel completely immersed in the roller coaster of meaningful interactions between all the characters. K De Long has the ability to pull you right in, literally plunging you into the depth of their emotions. The story of how Gene and Abel endure and then work together as Reapers is fraught with plenty of twists and turns ensuring you can not put it down. I was literally enthralled and read it in one sitting, unable to walk away. Anyone familiar with this author's writing knows her ability to bring to life visceral emotions, and now she has outdone herself with the haunting events that transpire within these pages. A most impressive read!!
