The Adventures of Jo, Zette and Jocko #3

Rate this book
Hergé, creator of the world-wide sensation "Tintin", began this new series in 1935, about an adventuring pair of siblings, and their pet monkey. Although he would enjoy writing younger characters, with more vivid imaginations, the artist often found himself frustrated by the fact that - compared to his famous boy reporter - Jo and Zette had less freedom to travel, due to their being children.

Georges Prosper Remi (22 May 1907 – 3 March 1983), better known by the pen name Hergé, was a Belgian comics writer and artist.
His best known and most substantial work is The Adventures of Tintin comic book series, which he wrote and illustrated from 1929 until his death in 1983, leaving the twenty-fourth Tintin adventure Tintin and Alph-Art unfinished. His work remains a strong influence on comics, particularly in Europe.

"Hergé" is the pseudonym of George Remí, making a game with the initials of his name inverted. Throughout the evolution of his star character, Tintin, we can see the progress of this author: from the first titles marked by the ultraconservative doctrine of the director of the newspaper Le Petit Vingtième, to the breaking of conventions embodied from The Blue Lotus , as well as the evolution of the society of his time. The research carried out by Hergé to historically contextualize his Adventures, as well as his implicit social criticism, have made Tintin a masterpiece of the 20th century.

Format Normal = D.L. 1er trimestre 1953; D. 1966/0053/258
->37 tome back = "01/1980 - 3f" edition

Read this first if you're a JZJ initiate because, despite being published as the third tome, it combines with the fourth to make the first story « Le Rayon du Mystère » of the series. I'm glad I already have the second half because, while being packed with action and gaffes, this is totally open≈ended≈dependant.

Despite being being so early in his career, released in 1939 weekly installments, his art already had the same clear-line refinement of the quality that would influence countless worldwide and define a huge percentage of Belgian bd for so many decades! (The first Tintin (USSR) is the only work of his that has a totally 'undrafted' look to me.)

Rather than spend some £600 on the rare English edition, I got hold of PDFs of both the black and white edition of the original 1936/7 story and the re-drawn/colourised 1952 edition and read it with google lens to translate from the French!

It was originally published in Le Petit Vingtième newspaper with red and green half tone colouring but the black and white edition (2003) loses that in favour of just the line work and some grey half tones.
I think the original versions were not originally collected as albums as the black and white Tintin adventures were, only in weekly newspapers.

As with the Tintin books from that period the 50s colour version doesn't change the drawing style. Minor edits are made to the structure and some background elements are added. Hergé may not have had the same passion for these stories as he had for Tintin but the quality of the art is still high and allows him to play in a world inspired partly by Jules Verne. The story is basic and follows the same Tintin formula from the time where the protagonists just go from one scrape to another. The villain is yet another of Hergé's mad scientists, which is fun.

okay, this one is better than the last one. This book has Herge's classic illustrations as the Tintin series. The story wasn't interesting as the first book (Mr. Pumps Legacy), but somehow this one is readable. Jocko's comic scenes are better here. I enjoyed the Mad Scientist character, but the book felt little shorter than first two books of this series.

I enjoyed this story more than the first two books. The only down side was that it is part of 2 episode set. This is the second book of that set, but it was a nice conclusion to the story and was glad that I didn't have to wait after finishing the previous book.

Celkově lepší než první dvojpříběh a srovnatelné s Tintinem.

Aika rajusti aika ajanut ohi tästä, mutta hyvin tulee mieleen pentuna lueskellut poikakirjat. Samanlaisia kliseitä viliseviä seikkailujan nekin olivat.

In 1935, between working on The Blue Lotus and The Broken Ear, Hergé was approached by Father Courtois, the director of the French weekly newspaper Coeurs Vaillants. The paper already carried Tintin, but Courtois also wanted a strip that would depict the solid family values and situations that the seemingly orphaned boy reporter was devoid of. He also presumably wanted something less subversive than the mischievous, trouble-making working-class boy rascals Quick and Flupke.

He needed a set of characters that would typify a good, normal family: A working father, a housewife and mother, young boy, a sister, even a pet. Apparently inspired by a toy monkey called Jocko, Hergé devised the family Legrand. Jacques was an engineer, and his son Jo and daughter Zette were average kids; bright, brave, honest, smart and yet still playful. Mother stayed home, cooking and being concerned a lot, and they had a small, feisty monkey for a pet name Jocko.

The Le Manitoba ne repond plus is the first adventure of two from The Secret Ray, which is not currently available in English. A ripping yarn of scientific bandits, gangsters, mad professors, robots and, regrettably, some rather ethnically unsound incidences of cannibal savages, this is very much a product of its time in too many respects. Although Hergé came to deeply regret (and wherever possible amend) his many early uses of that era’s racial stereotyping, the island dwelling natives will now always be controversial.
