The Misadventures of Martin Hathaway

Rate this book
In the first installment of the Misadventures Trilogy, hapless history teacher Martin Hathaway falls through Space and Time to land upon Airship Captain Daisy Fitzgerald McNamara's coffee table and into the middle of an adventure larger than he could ever dream.

Martin Hathaway awakens to discover that he is the center of a battle between the Free People of the Lost Valley and the Clockwork Men of Anatamenwar. Together with the eccentric crew of the A.S. Nephthys, Martin must explore the world of Arnica to discover his origins and ultimate destiny, all while reminding himself not to fall in love with the beautiful but deadly Captain McNamara. His journey is a lighthearted, humorous romp through time-honored fantasy conventions, proving that nothing, drama included, should be taken too seriously.

I found this book at The Two Sisters Books and More in Indiana, while on a special road trip with my daughter! One of the Two Sisters wrote this book. A wonder filled ride through a portal to another universe…filled with action, love and friendship! A treasure I’ll keep to read to my grandchildren (God willing!). Look forward to the next book in the series!

I was gifted this book by the authors father when I was in the Two Sisters Books and More Store. Which the store is enough for me to love.
I love the book for its hodge podge bunch of characters and relatable captain Daisy!
Their adventures you wish you could go on and the lollys you’d like from Melody! It’s just a fun book to relax to and forget about the craziness of our world and laugh at the crazy of theirs.
I can’t wait to return and pick up the second book!

Fantastic Book! I’m always nervous about reading books authored by friends. If they are good, then it just sounds like pandering to say they are good. If they aren’t as good, well then usually you just say that they are good and pander a bit.

I’m being completely honest. The story, characters, and humor in The Misadventures of Martin Hathaway charmed me. This is not my favorite genre to read, so it took a couple of chapters for me to get into the story. But once I did I was tickled with the way that the story unfolded. I love Daisy – obviously the heroine of the piece. And Martin turns out to be a charming character to follow around in other worlds. The steampunk elements were thoughtful and evident, but not overbearing.

Apart from the story itself, Kate’s wit and banter rang true through the whole first installment. It was like I was standing in a room listening to she and her sister Patty bat random facts and wordplay back and forth to one another. Delightful, especially since I’ll have fewer opportunities to experience this in person. And it was fun to see my name in print, as Mr. Rice made an appearance near the beginning of the novel.

I can’t wait for the next adventure – or misadventure. I highly recommend the book to anyone, whether they know or do not know Kate personally.

The Misadventures of Martin Hathaway is a steampunk fantasy with wit to spare. Not only is Glen’s writing clever and fast-paced, her characters are unique and loveable. While Martin Hathaway is an endearingly brave but bumbling hero, Captain Daisy Fitzgerald McNamara is probably the most self-assured female protagonist I’ve ever encountered. And though it’s no surprise they end up together, their romance is anything but ordinary. My favorite character, however, is Basil, Daisy’s pompous, bitingly sarcastic assistant.

Classic fantasy lovers will appreciate Glen’s nod to JRR Tolkien and Frank Baum, but her writing style and sense of humor remind me of one of my more recent favorites, Scott Meyer, the best selling author of Off to Be the Wizard. Which means I now have another favorite author, Kathryn Clare Glen – and I can’t wait to read the second installment in her Misadventures Trilogy!

My only question after finishing this book is... when is the second one coming out?! I love fantasy adventures and this one was enchanting. The characters were some of the most loveable characters I've had the pleasure of falling in love with since the Harry Potter books. The world that the author created is unique and delightful and I can't wait to read further adventures... or should I say misadventures!

This book is so, so good. If you're a fan of Gail Carriger and other humorous Steampunk-inspired books but want more lightheartedness and a tad less ridiculousness, then this is for you.

A portal fantasy disguised as Steampunk, this book is sure to please a LOT of people.

Fun and imaginative

The characters are interesting people and the story is engaging while giving time to develop the relationships among characters. Many literature references add to the imaginative feeling of the book.

Comedy, romance, and adventure set in another universe. This book is a delightful romp. Plenty of parts had me laughing out loud or reading excerpts to anyone within earshot. I haven’t found anything I enjoyed quite so thoroughly in a very long time. Looking forward to reading the sequel.

What an incredible book! Pure delight! I laughed out loud more times than I can count from the tongue-in-cheek humor and never had a moment where I wasn't enjoying every little bit.

In the best possible way, this book was very Tumblr. The characters were all so charming and The Valley is the type of place I want to live.

While the romance subplot was fairly predictable, I enjoyed seeing all of the characters interact. I particularly liked how each character was celebrated for their unique skills and talents and how they played off of each other in often humorous ways.

Overall this was a lovely story and a quick read (if not in the midst of college classes) and I'm glad to have stumbled upon it at Two Sisters Bookstore in Richmond, IN (where the author works!).
