Ann Hazelwood was the owner of a quilt shop for 30 years. She has always adored quilting and is a certified quilt appraiser. In addition to her cozy quilt fiction, she has written travel guides and quilting non-fiction.
The plot and characters are great, but this book really needed an editor. As a retired English teacher, I cringed at the number of grammar/usage errors in this book.
This book has so many grammatical, usage, and other writing errors that, even allowing for a colloquial style, I couldn't get through it, and I'm surprised it was published. The book cries out for an editor and someone who can guide the author through plot, style, and other basics of writing fiction and mysteries. Ouch.
Since I grew up and once again live in East Perry County, I love reading about the people and places in this book. Several are real people and places with different names. It is so fun see thing in my mind.
The story is good. The writing is actually really bad. I have no idea how this is an AQS sponsored author. A million exclamation points, inconsistent pacing (jarring one minute m then dragging the next), elaborating on things unnecessarily while not developing: emphasizing areas that are of far greater importance to the plot…It’s just OFF. I almost NEVER write a mediocre or negative review but man…This is amateur writing, at best. So so disappointed bc as a quilter, I was so excited to read this “AQS author”.
This story opens with Kate. She is a new widow full of resentment and anger at her deceased husband, the scoundrel! She is in the process of selling her large home and downsizing. She also has been willed a house in Missouri that she has never seen or even knew about and is preparing to go and list it to sell. And there is where the adventure starts! She meets a wonderful and hospitable woman nextdoor named Ellie and become fast friends. Kate decides to renovate the house to make it more appealing to a buyer. It becomes so appealing she decides to move into it and become a part of the town and a new start to her life. And then…there is Josephine. Come and be taken up in the adventure of a new start and see what the Forgiving Quilt is all about.
Could be four stars if not for the misspellings and punctuation errors. I must admit I have ties to the East Perry area. I originally bought this book as a gift for a cousin whose husband grew up in this area. They had great fun recognizing buildings, towns, shops etc. that appear in this book and loaned it to me. So much in this book is accurate, with different names. I know Sharla who is really Carla and Gerald who is Gerald. I have eaten at Marv's, seen this house, yes it is real, gone to the Lutheran Heritage Center, Saxon Memorial and Christmas Country Church Tour. So spoiler alert, I enjoyed reading about a place I know shown in an accurate and generous light.
This was an enjoyable book. It does have quite a few typographical errors in it; I'm wondering if it is because it has the appearance of a self-published book although this is apparently only one of several published by AQS (American Quilting Society). It's an easy read; I finished it in two days. It has an interesting plot and a bit of a mystery. There does seem to be a lot of drinking in it, although not abusive, and there are references to Christian faith but also some strange paranormal events a few times concerning the mystery. It didn't really need those to be an interesting book. Recommended
I absolutely love this book and cannot wait to read the rest of the series. This author has a talent for drawing you into the story and her characters. If you have any ties to East Perry County it is a definate read-I have roots in that area, having gone to Lutheran grade school there and being raised in a nearby town. Even though it is a work of fiction-it transported me to places and people I knew growning up. She captured the feel of the area so well. I don't quilt myself, but I enjoy them and the way she incorperates quilts into her stories as well
I enjoyed the plot of a widow inheriting a home in a different state and all that entails. The characters were well thought out and interplayed well with each other. There were a few unexpected twists that made the story all the more enjoyable. HOWEVER, the editing - or serious lack - was appalling! There were whole sentences run together, and numerous other quirks. I almost gave up, but I enjoyed the storyline. Ann Hazelwood is a gifted writer who would do herself a favor to pair with a better editor.
I guess I was expecting something better. I liked Kate's relationship with Ellie, but much of the story seemed forced or just filler. I hurried to finish so I could read something more interesting. I've already purchased 3 other books in this series, so I'm hoping the writing improves when I get brave enough to read another by this author.
I have enjoyed other Ann hazelwood books I enjoyed this one too I liked the characters in it and the story was good look forward to reading the next one I do wish there was a little more quilting in it there is a little bit of supernatural element which was fun
This book is pure fluff, which is usually not an issue for me (don’t we all enjoy pure fluff every once in a while?), but the lack of editing is truly appalling. Does the author or publisher not have an editor or proofreader? The errors in spelling, grammar, punctuation, and syntax run throughout the book. I have no interest in reading any more in this series, nor any more by this author.
I enjoyed reading this book. It was an easy read and flowed nicely from chapter to chapter. Being a quilter and a widow, the book gave me encouragement for better days to come. I will be reading more in this series!
I have read the entire series of the Colebridge novels with enjoyment and started the East Perry series now. Quilting, reading and baking are my avenues of relaxation. This was an easy and light read that I enjoyed and I’m looking forward to the next.
I just finished reading "The Forgiving Quilt" by Ann Hazelwood and it was wonderful. This is the first of five books in the East Perry County, Missouri series. The author makes you feel like you are actually part of the community.
However, I could not give it a 5 star because of the extremely poor proof reading and editing of the book. There were so many mistakes that at times it actually distracted me from what I was reading and my focus was more on the mistakes. I the second book is better written.
The 2nd in this fun and easy read series. I am loving the quaintness of the small town Borna. The friendships and trials feel very real. I can’t wait for the next in this series.
I loved this book. It was will written and kept you guessing who was behind all the things bad happening the main character. Is her new home really haunted by the ghost of the previous owner? I recommend this book to anyone who loves a good mystery.
Excellent book! Great writing. Great characters! I’ll be making my way through this entire series! Love everything about Borna and its residents- well, except for a few!
I really enjoyed the story and characters but gave only 3 stars because the editing was not good. Too many obvious errors made the book seem amateurish and the story deserved better
The book was good, despite all the typos. It did leave me missing something at the end. I would have liked to know what happened to a few of the characters. I felt the book was unfinished.
