In a World... Where OPTIMUS PRIME Never Died! One would stand and one would fall... and we all know OPTIMUS PRIME fell. But how would history have played out if he hadn't? Would the AUTOBOTS have still stood triumphant in their darkest hour... or would UNICRON have reigned supreme?!

WHAT IF… IDW STYLE!
There’s a theory of quantum realities, a concept of infinite possibility where anything can happen, does happen somewhere in the multiverse.
I wasn’t awared about this IDW event, but I found this comic book in the shelves of my local comic book store, since I noticed that it was labeled as “one-shot”, so I don’t see any reason of why not buying it.
I am glad that I did it.
If all other comic books of this event share the same format, I have to say that it’s a really good one. Since, this comic book begins describing how the “original” incident happened, in case you aren’t familiarized with it. Then, you start to read the “alternate” story with the assistance of a narrator indicating the key moments when the continuity is suffering twists.
So, this comic book is totally accessible to anybody interested on it.
THAT’S THE TRANSFORMER YOU’RE LOOKING FOR
One shall stand, one shall fall.
The key chosen moment to explore in this comic book (as you may already noticed in the information displayed on the cover) is taken from Transformers: The Animated Movie (1986) when Optimus Prime died in battle against Megatron, barely in the first act of the theatrical presentation. I watched the movie in theater, when I was a kid, back in 1986, and certainly it was a total shock to see that the mighty leader of the Autobots was dying, and even worse when the movie was barely beginning.
You have to understand that, back then, Optimus Prime was THE transformer, since he was a big freightliner truck, powerful, wise and with indisputable leadership skills. Current generations (no blaming, quite understandable) they are more attracted to Bumblebee, since he is nowadays (in the live-action theatrical films) an extremely cool kickin’-butts Chevrolet Camaro. But, back then, it was Optimus Prime, the transformer that everybody wanted.
Definitely it was an excellent idea, to explore what would happened if Optimus Prime didn’t died in his final battle against Megatron.
So, in this alternate world…
…Optimus Prime stands, Megatron falls.
Holy Key to Vector Sigma!!!
KINDA MISSED OPPORTUNITY
A single decision can change the fate of the universe. A simple turn to the left can avert catastrophe while a right turn can trigger an apocalypse.
Don’t get me wrong. I really enjoyed A LOT this comic book, especially since really cool things happened to Starscream (my favorite transformer), however, if you read the quote in this segment of the review, well, I was expecting an apocalypse, since if in the “original” story Optimus Prime died but at the end the good guys won, well, I thought that in some bizarre twist of events, the reason of Optimus Prime still alive would trigger something really bad. You know, that things happen for a reason, even bad things.
I won’t spoil you anything, and certainly isn’t a peachy beach party with Energon daiquiris for the Autobots at the end of the story. Many relevant characters die (again, I won’t tell you, don’t worry!) in both sides, Autobots and Decepticons.
However, they did the opposite “turn” when Optimus Prime is the surviving winner of his battle against Megatron, but still it was like the animated movie events still happened, just changing who does this and that, some important deaths that shouldn’t be happened, but in any case, ending pretty much as the “original” continuity did.
I can guess that it’s the way, that the universe always is trying to rectify itself, to “fix” the reality of the events…
…BUT since this is an alternate universe…
…I was expecting riskier developments evolving into a darker scenario.
Not always a good happening will lead to a happy ending. Showing that even if the “death” of Optimus Prime was a tragic incident, it was a sad necessity, since the future events would need a different kind of leadership to face different kind of threats.
Again, this a really cool reading that any Transformers fan will enjoy ( I did it ), but I expected a bolder developing.
