The Wolf of Harrow Hall

Rate this book
Bettany Sendris knows that going to the dour lord of Harrow Hall to plead for more time to pay her taxes is probably a fool's mission. However, with winter closing in on her tiny village, and barely enough food to put on her and her grandmother's table, she realizes she has no alternative.

But when the worst storm in decades strands her in Lord Greymount's gloomy castle, Bettany soon discovers that her presence there may bring some long-hidden secrets to light, secrets that could cost her more than just her heart.... (Book 7 of the Tales of the Latter Kingdoms)

A native of Southern California, Christine Pope has been writing stories ever since she commandeered her family’s Smith-Corona typewriter back in the sixth grade. Many reams of dead trees later, she’s happy to announce that her debut novel, Fringe Benefits, was published by Pink Petal Books on April 8, 2010. Her short fiction has appeared in Astonishing Adventures, Luna Station Quarterly, and the new journal of dark fiction, Dark Valentine. Her paranormal novella, Playing With Fire, was released on August 5, 2010.

While Fringe Benefits is a straight contemporary romance, she writes in a variety of genres, including paranormal romance, fantasy, horror, science fiction, and historical romance. She blames this on being easily distracted by bright, shiny objects, which could also account for the size of her shoe collection.

After spending many years in the magazine publishing industry, she now works as a freelance editor in addition to writing fiction. She lives with her husband and an explosively fluffy Pomeranian mix. Her house is pink, but don’t hold that against her.

The Wolf of Harrow Hall starts off promising. A rather courageous young woman, Bettany, embarks on a journey to Harrow Hall to plead for more time to pay her taxes. After being snowed in by a storm, Bettany finds herself the unwanted guest of Lord Greymount. Lord Greymount is rather dismissive and abrupt. However, after thinking that Bettany may offer him something he needs, Lord Greymount turns endearing and considerate. And there's the kicker. This is supposed to be a romance but Christine Pope appears to take interesting characters and turn them into opposites of themselves in the name of love. Bettany is independent and outspoken until she starts being wooed by Lord Greymount, then she turns into someone who will do as she's told and stay where she's told to stay; when told to jump her only question is how high. Lord Greymount is worse, from unlikable and almost cruel to Bettany, he turns into this nice man who is plagued by misfortune. Once Lord Greymount wins Bettany's love and realises she is not able to help him, he practically dismisses her and treats her with contempt. And yes, *spoiler alert*, they do LITTERALY ride off to live happily ever after.

I have just fallen in love with this series. This tale kind of combines many stories. A little bit of Beauty and the Beast, Little Red and more. This was a great story. I loved every bit of it.

It was ok.

I don't usually mind insta-love, but usually there's a reason, no matter how small. Here, the characters barely had one conversation and even then, they didn't discuss much about themselves, no deep conversation. I still don't know why Phelan fell in love with her. And the same with Bettany, other than he's a sexy man and he turns her on. The curse was only "revealed" at about the 90% mark. She basically said "please" to break the curse and that was it. Disappointing.

Delicious!

Another spellbinding tale for a very competent author who blends fairy tales and magic with very real characters. A book to read and enjoy

Woof.

I am eating these books up. They are delicious. Bettany is a strong red riding hood. The wolf never stood a chance.

Pope's The Wolf of Harrow Hall was a cute read with a lot of potential, but it did fall a bit short of expectation. The beginning was a bit slow and the mystery nonexistent, and when it did come up its exploration and resolution felt so rushed that the conclusion was really rather anticlimactic.

Christine Pope’s "Tales of the Latter Kingdoms" books have retold fairy tales from a variety of cultures, but The Wolf of Harrow Hall strays from the formula and looks to a slightly different kind of folklore. I found that I was even more excited to read the story because the main character wasn’t familiar like Scheherazade or Cinderella.

Bettany Sendris is not easily daunted by anything. Having never known her father and been raised by her grandmother since she was young, she has been something of an outcast her whole life, certainly not considered good enough for the young men in town. She takes every challenge in stride. She has the same fears and anxieties as anyone, but pushes them back to bravely face each one, from petitioning Lord Phelan Greymount for more time to pay her taxes to waiting out the worst storm of her lifetime in a strange, mysterious castle. A young woman who pragmatically doubts that there is any magic left in the world is about to be confronted with something she can’t otherwise explain.

Phelan, the secretive Lord of Harrow Hall, keeps to himself, and it will take more than the love of a good woman to heal the past that haunts him. Although he is in many ways a typical romantic hero, he and the plot are both a refreshing break from some of the tropes you tend to find in most romance.

Like the rest of the series, this book was a light, easy read, and one that I'll probably reread when I'm in the mood to be snowed in with a mysterious, handsome man.

I received a digital copy of this book in exchange for an honest review which was originally published here: http://www.thegeekgirlproject.com/201...

Tax time was coming near. Bettany knew their grandmother did not have enough money. What could they do, their income was meager. What if they could borrow money from Lord Greymount with a promise to repay in the summer. That that being the only option, Bettany set out to visit Lord Greymount at his castle.

Barely making it through the snowstorm, Bettany awakes to find herself in a bed in someplace unfamiliar. Somehow she was brought from the entrance to the inside of the castle. Determined to please her case, Bettany is finally granted a visit to Lord Greymount. Unable to leave the castle due to a great snowstorm, Bettany finds herself more intrigued with the Lord and wants to know more about him, and finds she has feelings for him. But why does he live in a great castle with so few servants, and no women? The more time she spends at the castle, the more the feelings grow and the more she wishes to learn more. What mysteries does this great castle and this Lord hold?

Another wonderful fairy tale by Christine Pope. With minimal characters, it is very easy to follow and become attached to Bettany, a simple girl with a goal. The reading is light and easy. This series is one that does not need to be read in any specific order. Sit back, pick up a fairy tale and enjoy!

Fairy tales for adults!!! This is a brilliantly crafted retelling of the Beauty and the Beast legend!!!

Bettany Sendris is an orphan, living with her grandmother in a tiny hamlet. Their tithe is due to the local overlord and money had run out. She undertakes a long trek to plead in person for more time to pay. She arrives at the gothic style castle just as a once in a lifetime snow storm envelopes the area. Now a reluctant guest to an even more reluctant overlord, Bettany is stranded.

But there is ore going on than a snow storm. Why are there no women in the castle? Why does the man in charge seem reluctant to be alone with her?

This was a great read. I have to admit that I haven't read the others on this series (soon to be rectified!!!). However I felt that it didn't slow me down in immersing myself in the world. I was soon caught up in the mystery and passion of the couple. Hugely enjoyed the entire thing and I had to read it all in one go - I could not put it down!!!! Hoping there are many more to come in this series!!

This isnt your childhood fairy tale that you grow up with. This was a great twist to the classic Beauty and the Beast. I liked that first person telling of the start and thought that it read at a steady pace. This was my first read of the Latter Kingdom Tales but I am so glad that there are more for me to read.

I am whiting this series immensely! Each of these Latter Kingdoms Books has been an interesting retell ing of well known fairytales, each one having its own unique twist. The stories are well crafted, with rich details that truly flesh out the world that they take place in. I am devouring this series!

Twisted

This is a charming blend of beauty and the beast with little red riding hood. It was a good read but I do not care for first person stories very much and this was also a bit too slow in some places for me.

This was a miss for me. I don't like rushed romances and this one happens in a fairly short time frame. And then there was not much explanation as to how the curse was broken. I felt like I only got three quarters of a story. I needed some more fleshing out.

So enjoyable!

I really enjoyed this tale of unexpected love and unexpected danger. Both Bettany and Phelan were characters who were well drawn and complimented one another in many more ways than their strong personalities. Ultimately a very fulfilling and redeeming love story.

I have yet to read a single book by Pope that I haven't liked. The tales of the Latter Kingdoms are really exceptional and each one is unique. I loved this story and would encourage anyone who likes a bit of fantasy with their romance to check it out!

A nice read but a little disappointing after Dragon Rose: there just doesn't seem to be as much depth here.
