Award-winning author Theresa Rizzo delivers a thrilling crime novel packed with suspense, romance, and redemption.
Theresa Rizzo is an award-winning author who writes emotional stories that explore the complexity of relationships and families through real-life trials. Born and raised in Grosse Pointe, Michigan, she now lives outside of Boulder, Colorado with her husband of thirty-two years.
I would like to thank Net Galley, Rizzo Publishing/Independent Book Publishers Association, and Ms. Theresa Rizzo for an ARC of this book in exchange for an unbiased review.
I jumped at the chance to read an advanced copy of this novel after thoroughly enjoying Ms. Rizzo’s 2015 book, The Lives Between Us. I went in blind, just knowing I trusted Ms. Rizzo to give me a good story with depth, and she came through with flying colors.
Silent Sentry is a romantic suspense novel. I have read very few books in this genre so have little to compare with, but I was impressed with this novel. The characters are well written, and I could connect with all the main players. The romantic angle was just right for me—it has plenty of depth, but is not too gratuitous. The plot is wonderfully complex, more so than I expected for a romantic suspense tale. Many diverse yet connected points of interest are touched upon, including old country Italian family dynamics, complex interpersonal relationships, a look into the Russian and Italian mafias, the plight of inner city Detroit, and a view into fascinating future medical technology. I was especially keen on the theme revolving about the dilemma of whether or not to withhold certain truths from loved ones. When, if ever, is that alright? I found a lot to think about as I tried to figure out who was after whom and why, and what I would do if I found myself in the same situations as the protagonist. This is not a true thriller, but the multiple facets of the story kept me captivated and glued to the pages eager to see what would happen next. There are some nifty twists in this story, especially towards the end.
I was impressed by Ms. Rizzo’s research in several areas, including medicine, computer technology, the workings of the mafia, police procedurals, Jaguars, and the cities of Grosse Pointe and Detroit, Michigan. I also loved the little “Fact or Fiction” extra information she added at the end of the story.
All in all, I was hooked and drawn in by Silent Sentry. I highly recommend this book to all fans of romantic suspense or even just suspense as the romantic angle, though substantial, takes a back seat to the mysteries of the story in my opinion. Will I read Ms. Rizzo again? I sure will. I have a couple of her previous offerings on my kindle already and look forward to reading her next book, Secrets, when it comes out next year.
When I read the blurb I was excited the words going through my mind were oh I like the sound of that. Must read it. So when Ms. Rizzo asked I jumped to the chance of reading this book.
Ms. Rizzo is a very talented author. She has created for me a different type of romantic suspense novel. There is a strong plot with action packed scenes.
For those who know me and those who don’t I’m mood dependent. I started this book a couple of days ago and my mood wasn’t right so I put it on hold and read something else. I then came back to it and it picked up for me.
Now in saying that I have some genres that are hit & miss for me and romantic suspense is one of them. Now this is just my personal opinion so pipe down if it doesn't suit you.
I didn't really like the main characters but that is just me. Not that doctors can't kick arse but I really like a Hero to be a former military so that is totally on me.
3 "Silent Sentry" Stars.
Book received by author in exchange for an honest review.
Author, Theresa Rizzo, contacted me and asked if I’d review her latest novel, Silent Sentry. I’m always honored when a publisher and/or author contacts me personally to ask for my opinion, and with Theresa she wasn’t any different. Once again, she did her homework in knowing the exact kinds of books I enjoy reading, and I always appreciate any author who takes this extra step. Why else would an author waste their time sending their novels to reviewers who aren’t interested in the subjects they’ve just spent their time slaving over? Something to keep in mind for any hopeful writers out there!
Gianna Donnatelli works in the medical field and has started a new business, along with two good friends who are also partners in her business. They stand to make millions of dollars on an invention Gianna came up with that will catapult the medical industry to the next level. So was it any wonder someone other than Gianna and her friends want to be a silent partner as well? Hmm, that’s strange given the fact Gianna hadn’t invited anyone else to be involved in her new technological company. So, you’re asking, who might have a reason to get involved in Gianna’s new business venture? Umm, wouldn’t you like to know? (Buy the book to find out!)
Gianna’s love interest, Dr. Joe Scarfili, had to work his way into my heart because at the initial beginning, I truly didn’t like his character. I felt like Gianna’s best friend, Faye. Joe was a self-centered, egotistical good looking asshole, but there was something about him Gianna couldn’t help but to notice, and I quickly understood. It could be the fact that they grew up together and their families were very close nit, so what wasn’t there to love about this gorgeous hunk of doctor? The man on the cover of the book looked good, but Theresa’s description of Joe in the story looks twenty times better than our cover man. Umm, even though I had to warm up to Dr. Scarfili, he was damn sure good looking and that just helped ease my pain a little.
When you first meet Joe, it may be hard to like him because of the way he comes across. However, as you move through the story, Joe’s backstory gives a lot of information as to why he is the way he is. Eventually he begins to show a mature human quality that softens him and yet keeps his character true to form. His love for Gianna was unwavering, and as you go through their love story, which I might add, the love scenes were good and juicy and not overdone, you’ll soon discover at what lengths Joe and Gianna will go to protect the other. What and who they thought they could trust will turn out to be a game of sorts.
Joe was extremely protective of Gianna and he had good reason to be. Someone had attacked Gianna in her father’s home and she had absolutely no idea who would do this or why? When Patrick, Joe’s best friend and police detective, asked Gianna was there anything missing or anything out of the ordinary, Gianna hadn’t noticed at that point, until she looked at her laptop. Across the screen was a message from the hacker who wanted to make sure her new business became theirs. Gianna was scared to let Joe and Patrick know what this hacker was up to because that would mean the police would have to cease her laptop and she was within days of launching her IPO for her product. What was an up-and-coming entrepreneur to do? Patrick had a nose for good detective work and he suspected something wasn’t quite right with Gianna’s story that she didn’t think anything was tampered with. After some prodding from Patrick, he and Joe quickly came to a conclusion that Joe wasn’t sure he wanted to embark upon. There was a real sense of danger and Patrick’s antennas were up. For you mystery buffs out there, I wonder will you figure out the ending? I must say, Theresa fooled me to some degree. She did a good job keeping the reader guessing.
This was a nice romantic/suspense novel with just the right amount of love scenes and story to keep any reader engaged for hours. Theresa has a nice touch with descriptions giving your mind’s eye just what it needs to see the story unfold as if sitting in a movie theater, which is why I enjoyed the description of Joe because that man was smokin’ hot! Oooh yeah, just what ladies want to read! Overall, this was a pretty decent story, very engaging and thought provoking. The Sexy Nerd gives Silent Sentry four stars. The book is on sale now! Please pick up your copy wherever books are sold and use the downloadable links for your convenience. Theresa is a welcomed voice to the literary world! Bravo!
Giana Donnatelli and Dr. Joe Scarfili have known each other forever. Their families have been friends since they were young which meant their lives have intersected for years. Their relationship, however, is much more complex than family friendship. With danger stalking both of them, it’s hard to say what is more risky to their hearts—their mysterious enemy or their attraction for each other….
This is a new author for me and I was thrilled to start reading and finding characters and a story that had me totally engrossed from the start. Gianna was a balanced mix of beautiful, smart and stubborn. She was determined to follow her dreams despite the sudden danger, yet practical enough to know she needed help. She felt vulnerable and, despite her feelings for Joe—or because of them—she couldn’t help but appreciate having him by her side.
I was equally on team Gianna and Joe; it was hard to pick when both of them were so likable. Joe had many swoon worthy characteristics including drop-dead gorgeousness and heart-fluttering protectiveness. The two meshed well as they worked side by side to defend themselves against an unknown attacker despite their obvious emotional baggage. The uncertainty that existed between them added another layer to a not-so-simple plot…
“He needed to feel the reassurance of her warm body, solid form, and heart beating strong against his. Joe needed Gianna, and that scared him silly.”
It’s hard to say what was the focal point in this suspenseful romance with so many elements coming together to make it a riveting read. The danger is palpable and, with so many possible culprits, the twists and turns kept the story fresh with surprises around every corner. I loved the relationship between Gianna and Joe as they both fought the feelings that were growing between them under very trying circumstances. The humor that peeked out amidst the turmoil brought a welcome lightheartedness to the emotional roller coaster. There is love and then there is love for a car—two very different things entirely!
While the ending seemed rushed and a bit to flat to me, the overall story was full of memorable characters and heart-felt emotion which keep me coming back for more! ~ Diane, 4 stars
Listened to this book as an audiobook so some of the characters names will be as I listened to them being spoken. Story starts out with Giana and she's come back to her fathers house that she's housesitting to find an intruder, on her computer. She ends up waking up in the hospital and Joe, a doctor comes to her aid-he will take her to his house, his parents are due home the next day and he's got time off. He's an old family friend and he knows many dectectives who can figure out what's going on. We learn a lot about their prior relationship over the years-she was infatuated with him. Story also follows a group of others who want her knowledge, what's on her computer. If it goes public it will revoluntize the health care system. Giana had grown up and specializes in nursing and to keep on her father's good side she works at the less traumaized center where she'd not see many gang shootings. She changes career choices and gets a degree in computers also and combines her knowledge to create Promethus, the health program she hopes will sell. Fast paced action, never a dull moment. Love the detailed descriptions of the area as I've only seen scenes on the TV. Love how the neighborhood watch out for one another and their younger children on their way home from school every day. Sad, the day he lost his wife Maggie. Some assaults appear to be targeting her, others target him so Pat Sullivan the dectective has a lot of different leads and suspects. Joe attempts to help sometimes putting him in harms way as he bodily tries to shield her. With the aassault she's left deaf in one ear and he is pretty sure with the damage she incurred she will never hear from that ear again. Steamy hot sex scenes enhance this book and that leads to other inhabitences. So many intertwining parts to this but easy to keep track of it all, Few characters-easy to keep track of everyone. Love all the charity work for the area. Love all the extra details about the writing of the book.
As far as Romantic Suspense goes, Silent Sentry had a lot of moving parts. At times, it was difficult to truly tie all of the relationships together. There’s a lot of family history that gets thrown your way and gets all the more complicated with the allusion to the Russian and Italian mafia. The major theme being that family takes care of family. The families in question are the Donnatelli and Scarfili families. They have been intertwined for decades. This most recent connection comes courtesy of Gianna Donnatelli and Dr. Joseph “Joe” Scarfili.
While housesitting for her father Sal, Gianna walks in on a man going through her computer. Their encounter sends Gianna to the hospital where she runs into long time family friend Dr. Joseph Scarfili. Since she has a concussion, Gianna ends up staying with Joe for a few days. Gianna has always had a crush on Joe but Joe is a little older and is now a widower. Although there is some friction, they definitely have an attraction to each other. With help from the police, Gianna is concerned that her assault is related to the launch of her company’s new software called Promotheus. However, it may also be related to her father’s company and the mafia. Several threats to her life and others around her, lead Gianna and company to believe that there are greater forces at play. This is where the book gets the most interesting because the mystery behind the crimes is hard to figure out. More and more suspects get involved and there is a growing suspicion that the mafia is closer than you think.
I enjoyed trying to put all of the puzzle pieces together but it was a little confusing. In hindsight, it all makes sense and Theresa Rizzo wove a good tale. Unfortunately, the details would give everything away so I suggest you just strap in and enjoy the ride. You may need a flowchart to understand all of the familial connections.
**Received a copy from Rizzo Publishing in exchange for an honest unbiased opinion.**
4.5 stars Mystery + romance AND the mafia? What more could I ask for? When I was approached about reviewing another book by Theresa Rizzo, I happily agreed because I enjoyed her previous book so much. But little did I realize this one had to do with the mafia. Very few people know that I used to have a mild *cough* obsession *cough* with mafia when I was younger so I always enjoy reading mysteries that have to do with organized crime. And Theresa Rizzo did not disappoint in this novel.
Silent Sentry is a wonderful mystery novel about Gianna Donnatelli. She is in her mid-twenties, an RN, a computer whiz, and she just started up her own company. She grew up in the posh neighborhood of Gross Pointe in Detroit, MI. But now she wants to make a difference to those who are underprivileged and lives in downtown Detroit. Unfortunately, while housesitting for her father, she surprises and intruder and winds up in the hospital.
Cue the gorgeous Dr. Joe Scarfili. He finds Gianna at the hospital after her ordeal. They are old family friends, although they haven't seen each other in years. Due to her injuries, she needs someone to stay with her. Her father is still out of town, her brother lives in Italy, and her mother has been dead for years. So Joe offers to let her come stay with him.
At this point, the mystery is just beginning. What follows are a series of break-ins, computer hackings, bombings, and murders. Is it the Detroit gangs or someone more sinister? Is someone after Gianna or her company? Could Joe also be a target? And could Gianna's or Joe's families be tied to the mafia?
Add to all of this a growing attraction between Joe and Gianna. Unfortunately, Joe comes with emotional baggage due to his late wife's "do good-er" life philosophy. When Gianna's father is gunned down in a similar manner to Meggie, Joe doesn't handle it will and it could spell the end of their relationship.
So many questions and so much going on in this book! The only thing that wasn't a big mystery to me was who the real culprit was terrorizing Gianna. However, there were so many other loose ends that didn't seem to be connected and I was anxious to see how everything would all fit together.
Gianna's character was wonderful. I felt she was strong when necessary, and allowed her weaknesses to show through when she couldn't handle any more. It was impressive that she stood up to her father, especially a protective Italian father. But I loved seeing how he had still gone above her head to protect her without her knowledge, showing just how much he loved his daughter.
The good doctor Joe was also an admirable man, but he definitely had his faults. I didn't like the way he ran from Gianna after her father died. That seemed much too cowardly for me, even given his grief over his wife's death. And I also felt like he may have kept his head in the sand where his family was concerned - not being willing to acknowledge that they may have still had mafia connections. However, his love and concern for Gianna were genuine and I certainly appreciated that.
If you have read my reviews before, you know I'm a sucker for an awesome mystery/crime novel with a great romance thrown in the mix. And when you add in the mafia? I can't help but love the book! I certainly look forward to Ms. Rizzo's next novel!
The author describes this book as a suspense novel with a touch of romance. I describe this book as a romance novel with a touch of suspense. If you like romance, it’s okay. If you like well done suspense, look elsewhere. The book focuses on the two main lovers, who are described in great detail. Their characters are two dimensional: The female protagonist is a trained nurse with world class computer coding skills. She’s so brilliant that she’s critical to her company that her partner can’t keep up with her. If something happens to her, he’d never be able to support the program by himself. She’s also very guilt driven, she believes that anything that happens to anyone else is her fault. Her knight in shining armor is a surgeon who seems to have a flexible enough schedule to drop everything to come to her aid. He even gets into fights to defend her. I’ve never heard of a surgeon who would risk his hand for anything. He devolves into a typical hero in a romance novel. The villains are vague. This author could use a good editor. Given that the name of the publishing company is the same as the author’s last name, I doubt she hired a professional editor to review the book. I cannot recommend this book.
It took a while to read this book, I expected it to be more action/thriller than romance. It was interesting but a lot of family members to remember and possibilities to keep in mind as I read it.
If you are a fan of romantic suspense novels that provide enough thrills and chills that will keep you on your toes, guessing, and sitting on the edge of your seat, then look no further, Silent Sentry by author Theresa Rizzo is the book for you!
Set in Detroit, Michigan and told in the third person narrative, the author weaves a riveting tale that follows Nurse / medical technology entrepreneur Gianna Donnatelli and Dr. Joe Scarfili as they try to outwit a psychotic hacker before he destroys Gianna's business and possibly their lives.
Gianna and Joe are longtime childhood friends, their families have always lived by the code “Family takes care of family.”
Gianna has developed a program that could revolutionize medical care. Once the patent is issued, the program will go on the market, but someone wants the program for themselves. There are break-ins and numerous attempts on Gianna's life that lands her in the hospital, where she runs into Joe, who is a prominent surgeon. Gianna had a crush on Joe when she was a teen, but they had gone their separate ways when they became adults, and Joe met and married his now dead wife Meggie. Joe wants to protect Gianna from further harm, but as their relationship blossoms, past issues with emotional pain keep rising to the surface and he fights the urge to run. But as the violence against Gianna mounts, it will take both of them to try to figure out who's behind the violence and the attempts at ruining her business.
I really enjoyed reading this compelling and complex romantic suspense story. It had a good balance of suspense and romance that easily kept me engaged and turning the pages as I followed Gianna and Joe's journey to put the puzzle together and solve the mystery. This is definitely one of those stories that is very hard to put down.
Silent Sentry is a fast paced and riveting tale that has an intriguing mixture of drama, romance, family secrets, betrayal, suspense, and enough thrilling twists and turns that will keep the reader guessing to the surprising conclusion.
Disclaimer: I received a copy of the book from the author in exchange for my honest review and participation in a virtual book tour event hosted by author Theresa Rizzo.
“Silent Sentry” by Theresa Rizzo is an intense romantic mystery thriller. Gianna Donnatelli is about to realize her dreams as her company is set to go public with a revolutionary medical product that will also help revitalize her beloved city, Detroit. When she is attacked and lands in the hospital, Dr. Joe Scarfili, an old family friend, vows to keep her safe regardless of the stakes. The forces after Gianna’s company are more powerful than either Joe or Gianna could imagine however, and they may just be in over their heads.
Rizzo is masterful at crafting a complex riveting tale of action and drama with twists that keep the reader guessing to the very end. I thought I had things figured out, but found myself heading down the wrong trail so many times that I finally had to stop speculating!
The characters are well defined, multi-dimensional, and realistic. I felt like I was actually inside their heads at times, even when I didn’t want to be there. What I appreciate most regarding the characters, is there weren’t any “extras” just taking up space in the plot. Every character had a purpose, there were no fillers, and I found that to be quite refreshing.
This was the perfect book for me to curl up with on this cold and rainy December day and, once all wrapped up in my comfy blanket, I did not move until I finished the very last page. I highly recommend this book to fans of romance and thrillers alike. “Silent Sentry” left me wondering how it is I have not read any of the other books by Theresa Rizzo, but I can guarantee I will not be able to make that statement for very long.
Mafia, hackers and bombs, oh my! A truly exciting story that had me riveted to my seat and anxious to ignore my husband to unravel the mystery. Gianna and Joe are entwined together by their families and childhood. Their parents were very close friends and thus the extended family. The two have a long history beginning with Gianna's childhood crush on Joe. Despite their upbringing and wealth, they each lived in a rough part of Detroit - by choice. Joe's wife felt as the ADA she could relate and mingle with her clients. Gianna just felt she could bring good to the community with her business and people skills. Gianna's business is smart, highly marketable and desired by an unsavory person. That's about where this story gets mysterious and the thrill ride begins. Things happen to Joe and Gianna but they can't seem to pinpoint who or why, nothing really adds up. Just when I thought I had it figured out something else went haywire and messed with my thoughts. Rizzo has a true talent for storytelling and weaving the story together with lovable characters and sinister bad guys. It was a pleasure to read my early release copy from Netgalley.
This was the first book I have read from Ms. Rizzo and I am HOOKED! This book was OUTSTANDING! The Silent Sentry had everything I look for in a book; character development, a strong story line, a plot that is reasonably believable, and suspense that kept me on the edge of my seat and reading non-stop. To top it off there was a wonderful little romance going on between Joe and Gianna that didn't over power the book. It was just the right mix of everything. The book drew me in from the first few pages. I could truly visualize the characters, the locations, and their feelings. So refreshing when so many authors want to just tell a story...I like to be thrown into the story, I want to see the story and this book gave me that. The secondary characters were all well thought out and were instrumental to the story line. I honestly can't say anything bad about this book. I am going to get on my Kindle and look for more stories by Ms. Rizzo! Well done! A definite 5 star read!
4.5 Stars This was one excellent book. The suspense in this one kept me on the edge of my seat. There were twists and turns that I didn't see coming. There was one part in the book that I knew was going to happen, but I'm glad that way it turned out because it almost ruined the book for me. I can handle most anything in romance books, but one unforgivable thing for involves animals. Luckily the outcome was okay. Everything happening to Gianna all you can do if feel for her. Loyalty is tested and what you thought you knew about family will blow your mind. It's action packed with romance and passion. Over all great read that I recommend.
I was given an ARC from NetGalley in exchange for an honest and independent review. A good storyline with intrigue, mystery, suspense and romance. I really enjoyed the developing romance between Gianna and Joe, their characters are very credible.
Just the right mix of romance and suspense in this mystery thriller about the Mafia and Detroit. Fast paced with lots of twists and turns to keep you guessing.
This book kept me on the edge of my seat! I received an advanced copy in exchange for an honest review.
I enjoyed this book. It had a good balance of romance and lots of suspense. The plot kept me guessing and I had to change my idea of what was happening as things went on. While the story seemed a bit crazy at times, it was believable enough to hold my interest. The elements of family drama and medical insight added to the novel's merit.
Well, it looks like I'm in the minority on this one. It didn't quite work for me. I could be hitting a reading slump, but I wasn't able to connect to the characters or get sufficiently interested in the story.
Gianna Donatelli is from a very traditional Italian family in Detroit. Traditional in the sense that males are the head of the family, and the protectors... and females are relegated to happy home makers or other feminine type pursuits. Gianna’s father approved of her initial career as a nurse... but when she decides to veer into computer/software programming, that was seen as unfeminine. I liked that the heroine was on the smart side, capable when it came to her business, and talented in a male-dominated career field. I did not understand her resentment of the hero's dead wife... it was petty and immature and irrational. I'm sorry to say that Gianna annoyed me more often than not.
Joe Scarafili is the son of another traditional Italian family. He is also a talented surgeon with a tragic past, having lost his wife to a senseless violent act. I liked Joe's big Italian family, some of whom are clearly in thr Mob. I really didn't feel like I knew enough about Joe to connect to his character though.
The biggest problem I had with this story was that most of the relationship seemed to be happening off page. This prevented me from forming connections with the main characters and becoming invested in the relationship between the H/h. Scenes were cut abruptly and then it's a week later and they are alluding to things that happened over the week, but it was all off page. So I didn't feel there was enough relationship building material for us to grab onto. And for as much time spent off page, the story seemed to drag for me.
I felt like there was something brewing with Faye that was never flushed out. I didn't understand her hostility toward Joe, and sometimes Gianna. And the thing with Peter seemed crammed in for the convenience of the plot. There was also a lot of taking out of monogrammed white handkerchiefs... I can't say how many but it was enough for me to note " what's with all the handkerchiefs?" I'm not sure if that is a mobster stereotype or what.
There was another small plothole that I would have liked to be resolved... and that was the favor that Joe did for Uncle Sal. While he has some inner monologue alluding to this favor, we never find out what it was.
I found the author's descriptions of Detroit and Grosse Point to be quite vivid. Rizzo did a great job at detailing a setting so that you could form a picture in your head. That was probably my favorite aspect of this book.
I received an free copy of this book via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. 2.5 stars / 2 flames.
Absolutely loved this book. Got it as an early release and so happy I did. I couldn't put it down even though there were things that I needed to get done around the house I chose to finish it today and I am so glad I did. I loved the story between Gianna and Joe and loved reading about the Mafia and the descriptions of Detroit made me believe I was there. I would highly recommend this and any other books by Theresa Rizzo.
I really love it when a book is leaving me with some foods for thoughts. That’s exactly what happened with Silent Sentry. This week, I was talking with 2 friends about the fact that lately, most of the romantic suspense I read were a bit off. Most of them are just ok. Ask and you will receive they said and my prayers were heard. This book is simply fabulous, it has everything I am looking for plus a touch of those classy Mafioso! What can I ask more?
One thing that I really enjoy about this book is all the research that was done by the author. Her knowledge is showing and she managed to make me curious about Detroit area and the mob history behind it. It is not a classical mob story, it is a modern spin on a classical way to operate. Mafia presence is not that apparent at the beginning of the story, but like every good one, it is revealing itself little by little.
The story is full of twists and suspense. So much so that I was frustrated when I had to take a break from reading. I was totally obsessed with the story. It is a perfect balance between romance and action. Even though there is violence in this book, it is done with class. That is a single word that is defining the whole storyline: classy. It is requiring a lot of skills to be able to stay classy all the way through a novel and Theresa Rizzo nailed it. Everything is about balance, the pace is perfect, the storyline is simply amazing, and the end totally blew me away.
Gianna is a strong and independent woman with a mind of her own. She knows what she wants and she is willing to work hard to obtain it. Being overprotected by her father when growing up, it was hard for her to be able to do all the things she wanted. Being a grown-up lady, now she gets to live her life as she intends it to be. To be of service is what is important to her. She is living to make a difference in the world, and she is doing it one small action at a time. She decided to buy a house in a dangerous neighborhood in Detroit and that is where she feels at home (and she deeply cares about her neighbors). She is working hard on a project to will be revolutionizing the health care system and will help just about everyone. She is also all about integrity, I would say that it is the most important value to her. She keeps busy not to have to think about her love life (non-existent). She has her breakdowns and her doubts which sometimes appear in contradiction with her constant need to be a strong woman. However, she was vulnerable enough to do her inner work and work through them. I just fell in love with Miss Giana!
Joe has been hurt in his life. His wife was shot in his front yard and he closed himself off. He is numbing his pain by working around the clock in the hospital. We can tell that he is not quite in touch with all that had happened, he prefers not to think about it. He is constantly haunted by guilt and his heart is guarded. Joe is an alpha Italian man, not my favorite type of character, but then again, the author did a wonderful job by not going stereotypical with him. We are able to see cracks in his heart here and there. That is delicious to see him evolve throughout the story. Joe and Gianna knew each other for a long time; their dads are best friends and both Italian. When he saw Gianna at the hospital, he decided to take her under his wing. Gianna is teaching him have a more human approach to life. I really feel blessed to have seen Joe’s emotional evolution in this story.
There is a moral dilemma that comes to play at one point in the story. If I was in Gianna’s shoes I wonder what my reaction would be. Would I react the same way than she did? There is no easy answer, and, no, I will not reveal any spoilers about it. I still don't have an answer about that, I'll let you know when I will have made my decision! Some people might be shocked or disagree completely with Gianna’s decision, but that is one of the strengths of the book. When an author is able to insert some ethical/moral issues in a fiction book and it is done in a non-judgmental way, it always blows my mind away.
That book had me feeling emotional a couple of time, in fact, I almost cried (having not been on a bus while reading I would have definitely shed some tears).
I hope that the story will continue with Patrick or Paul story. I can’t get enough of the Scarfilis and Donnatellis.
I definitely recommend this read, that is a no brainer, Thank You, Theresa Rizzo for that amazing story.
I received this book from the JeepDiva for the express purposes of an honest review. The opinions and rating of this review are solely mine and in no way was I compensated.

Let me just say, I love Theresa Rizzo’s writing! I have loved every book she has written. Silent Sentry is no exception.
I have come the expect certain things from Theresa’s writing; settings that come alive because of her vivid descriptions, characters that feel like real people to you, like friends. And an intriguing plot that puts these characters through the ringer.
Silent Sentry is set in Detroit. Gianna Donnatelli has invented, Prometheus, a computer program that will revolutionize the medical industry. Some one has found out about her new invention and wants in on it and will stop at nothing to get it and her.
Dr. Joe Scarfili is an old friend of Gianna’s family. He is the Dr. who takes care of her after someone breaks into her father’s home and knocks her unconscious. He is also the object of her man crush from years ago.
At times I was yelling at Gianna for being so stubborn and naive about the real and present danger. At other times I was impressed with how smart and compassionate she was.
Silent Sentry a romantic story that is full of suspense. All the way to the very last page.
I think you will thoroughly enjoy this book. Give this author a try. I don’t think you will regret it.

I was given this book and asked by the author to give a fair and honest review. That was a very easy assignment for me, since I have read and loved all of her books.
Her characters were all so well defined that I felt I knew them personally. The storyline was very intriguing and complex and kept me reading “just a few more pages” far later each night than I should have been reading. There were several diverse plot points and I was fascinated trying to connect them all – attempting to figure out how all of the players related to each other. And of course Ms. Rizzo’s unique twists and turns are always there, especially as the story draws to its conclusion. You think you finally have it figured out and then realize that you are wrong again!
And as Ms. Rizzo always does to me, she makes me think (not just read & enjoy) – for example, when is it OK to keep a potentially hurtful truth from someone you love?
And in all of her books I continue to be amazed at the depth of Ms. Rizzo’s research – she leaves no stones unturned and in this story there were many to delve into. This makes it easier to understand why we have to wait until 2017 for her next book (sad as that makes me). I will be ready to read as soon as she is ready to release! I highly recommend this book – well worth reading!
A civic-minded entrepreneur in Detroit works to get her cyber-security business off the ground despite the recent murder of her father. Gianna and her two partners have renovated a derelict building in urban Detroit for their new office, and Gianna has chosen to live in a part of the city that needs rebuilding. Unfortunately, bad neighborhoods in Detroit can be dangerous, as Gianna discovers firsthand.
Throughout the story, amid various subplots and well-written plot twists, Gianna and her fiance, Joe, question whether their Italian families are somehow connected to The Family, back in the Old Country. One clue is that a mysterious anonymous man seems to have appointed himself Gianna's bodyguard.
Gangs attack, criminals commit suicide in jail under suspicious circumstances, and cars blow up - with deadly results. Gianna is injured. Joe is nearly killed. Despite hardships, their romance blossoms. And it is during their hastily-arranged wedding that the story culminates in surprising, somewhat daunting, revelations about the identity of their silent guardian and his reason for being.
Author Theresa Rizzo uses her own Italian heritage and personal knowledge of urban Detroit to lend depth and authenticity to the story. The writing style is smooth and fluid, the characters engaging, intriguing, and often exciting, and the plotline is well-designed.
Altogether, Silent Sentry is an entertaining and compelling read. Watch for other excellent novels from Theresa Rizzo.
This was a wonderfully satisfying book. This Is the first book I have read by Theresa Rizzo and I am so impressed by her work. It is obvious that she placed a lot of research and time into this very Interesting and entertaining novel. The details about Detroit and the fictitious Mafia families were simply amazing. All characters were well defined and likable. At first I thought the book could have moved a little faster, but as I entered into three quarters of the book I could see how necessary all the information was to deliver an awesome ending. Perfect! I am looking forward to reading more of Ms. Riazzo's works
Theresa Rizzo's knack of writing important and emotional fiction just blows me away!
A hacker threatens Gianna Donnatelli’s life, Dr. Joe Scarfili is determined to keep her safe. Gianna and her partners have created an innovated new medical device that someone wants They will stop at nothing to get it before Gianna is able to release it as her own. Gianna’s insists on taking unnecessary risks such as living in one of Detroit's worst sides of town even though she could afford so much more. Joe can't help but be scared and over-protected since his wife got killed for her kindness to the bad side of town.

Along the way they will both find out how much the other means to them. Will they be able to make a relationship work or will the danger get the best of them?
This was an edge of your seat, heart pounding read that I would suggest to anyone looking for something different in fiction.
Someone wants Gianna Donnatelli, dead or alive and they will stop at nothing to get what they want. Gianna has created a program that will turn the medical care field into a far more patient/doctor/cost friendly world and Gianna’s fledgling company is going to reap the benefits. Her life is turned into a living nightmare as break-ins, deaths and her own injuries prove that whoever is after her and her product are serious, deadly serious.
Strong, willful and independent, Gianna’s past comes back to haunt her when she is taken to the hospital in the form of Dr. Joe Scarfili, the man she had a crush on since childhood. A successful surgeon, who has the right address in a wealthy area outside of Detroit, Joe is determined to help protect Gianna from her stalker, because the family protects their own, but is he up for the challenge of trying to control Gianna for her own safety?
Follow along as Theresa Rizzo brews up a blend of computer espionage, international mob greed and showcases the stark differences between the haves of a wealthy community and the have-nots left behind to struggle in a dying city. Gianna has a heart full of love for those less fortunate than she and she puts her money where her mouth is. Joe is caught up in preconceived ideas of those of lessor circumstance, as well as the memories of the darkest day of his life. Both strong willed, both not seeing life as it truly is, can they trust their budding romance for what it is? Will they live to find out?
Ms. Rizzo has managed to create a maze of mystery, making it impossible to pick who the villain is. So many great prospects, so much deceit and misunderstanding, Silent Sentry is truly, an edge-of-your-seat read with an eye-opening look at common attitudes in society.
I received an ARC edition from the author, Theresa Rizzo, in exchange for my honest review.
Interesting read and full of surprises! Dr. Joe, a man who runs from everything to cope with the pain he felt of losing his wife. Gianna, a nurse and entrepreneur who also knew Joe. They did not get in touch for long years but an incident happened to Gianna that again made their paths crossed. With Gianna's life is threatened, things get more interesting and intense. With Joe's past about his wife, he will do anything to protect her and keep her safe. Ms. Theresa did an amazing job! Love this book. Full of interesting informations and nice story!
