Rate this book
"Countdown" is a companion story to "Departure."

Andreada is only 20 and looking forward to the second half of her life before she has to step through the portal into the unknown. She's young, in love with Navine, and leads the typical care-free life of those who reside in the city. After a terrible mistake, she is left with only two choices: step into the Justice portal reserved for criminals and misfits, or flee to The Bower district, a lawless undercity with no rules, no laws, and no place for a scared young woman on the run from the authorities.

This is a companion story to Travis’ other work Departure , taking place in the same world, this is another look at the society and how people live it.

This story centers on Andreada, who after doing something illegal is forced to hide in the underground of the city known as The Bower District. Full of people that are outrunning the heavily regulated world above, she now joins their ranks in order to hide from those from above that are looking to condemn her. In this world you have till your clock runs out to get to the portal that leads you to God knows where. Literally, no one knows. All they know is that if they don’t make it through their assigned portal (one for those who have followed the rules, and another one for criminals and misfits) they will disintegrate into nothing, wherever it is that they happen to be in that moment.

Andreada is in love with her girlfriend Navine and wants to undergo some risky procedures to possibly stop her clock so she can spend her life with Navine. As Navine has managed to find a way to continue to live, somehow having the clock extends your life. At least when the timer isn’t running. Navine definitely doesn’t want Andreada to undergo the process as she’s witnessed people lose their lives in the process. She would rather see Andreada go through the Justice Portal and know that she is possibly alive, rather than possibly watch her die a horrible painful death.

In the end, Andreada enters the portal, and what’s on the other side definitely leaves you wanting to read more and find out what the whole point is. I would definitely recommend reading Departure if you’re going to read this book as well as it definitely gives you more information that I’m sure will be the center of the third book Arrival . I seriously love Travis Hill’s work and would recommend it to anyone. A lot of his work is set in future times and he doesn’t hesitate to include glbtqia characters in his stories, which I love!

I Beta read this story for Mr. Hill quite some time ago so some details may be slightly different from when I read it to when it was released. Thanks Travis!!
