Kristyl Barnette’s life was finally coming together.
In Clearwater, she found the reason why she could hear people’s thoughts and make objects move. She found friends to stand by her. And, in Owen Marsh, she even found someone she could love.
But one spell changed everything.
Thrust into an alternate reality, Kristyl must navigate a new past and different relationships, all while keeping the secret only she and Crystal Jamison In their attempt to find a powerful stone for the circle of witches to anchor to, they altered the past.
Owen barely looks at her. She’s forced to act like she’s friends with the circle and to pretend she’s been dating Fox Holloway for years. And to make matters worse, the quartz stone she retrieved from the past might not be the source of pure energy the circle hoped for. There's a darkness to it Kristyl doesn’t trust.
Now people are dying mysteriously, and Kristyl must form new alliances with old friends in order to prevent more deaths—and to save the circle from destruction.
Power comes at a price. Will Kristyl be able to pay it before it’s too late?
Ok, so, I've sat on this review for a few days, unsure what rating to give.
Wild Magic is the second in the Clearwater Witches series (trilogy?) and, having loved Crystal Magic, I'd been rather excited for this one.
In a sense, it didn't disappoint -it was a very enjoyable read; great catching up with Krissa and the gang, discovering just how much life in Clearwater has been screwed up (/improved) by the time travel spell, figuring out what exactly this crystal is all about. Freeman has created an extremely interesting world, an exciting story, with characters I quickly came to care about.
But...BUT...
This book is not without its issues. Issues that have acted as automatic mark down points for me with many a book in the past. Pretty major no-no's I can't rate and review without acknowledging:
1. Love triangle. 2. Clumsy foreshadowing. 3. A protagonist who comes across as kinda wet, who was annoyingly indecisive, passive, and blind to the obvious. 4. Repetition of plot info every other page. Like readers are too dumb to follow without the constant reminders. 5. An ending I just could not buy into much at all.
So, yeah...
Rating: Not easy.
My thought while reading was 5*. However, on finishing and reflecting, weighing up, I've been swaying between 3* and 4*. 2* was even briefly considered.
4* is where I've decided to settle.
Because, well, I can't deny I found it quite the page turner. I am looking forward to picking up the next book, I'm rooting for Krissa and want to see things turn out okay for her. Clearwater's a place I do really like spending time in, and -stripping it back to basics -I figure that's the most important thing.
This story continues to be addictive. This book was just as riveting as the first one. I was intrigued by the alternate timeline in this one. I thought the author did a great job of exploring how different circumstances would change the personalities of the characters. It is true to some degree that you are like the company you keep. The detail of her diary entries ending when she chose shallow friends is so spot on. Shallow people aren't big on self-reflection.
This author is not afraid to take the painful route to character development. Things don't just magically work out for the protagonist even though she has magical powers. Her life continues to be complicated, and it's not just because of the villain. Her personal choices have consequences, and there are no easy fixes. I'll be following her journey to it's conclusion. It has not been predictable, so I can't guess where it will lead.
Wild Magic is the second book in the Clearwater Witches series. This one seemed to have a lot more high school drama than the first one did. The climax was good though...except for the cliffhanger ending.
I really don't know if I ship her with Fox or Owen at this point 😭
this is like one of the cheesiet most basic fantasy books i have ever read but i read the first one when I was very little and just loved it and i guess I still like it
▪️ Wild Magic - Madeline Freeman ▪️ Clearwater Witches Book 2 ▪️Pages - 274 ▪️🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 ---------------------------------------------------- 🧙🏼♀️ If you are given a chance to go back to past & change things, what will you change?
🧙🏼♀️ Will you appreciate the aftermath or regret What you have done ? ---------------------------------------------------- ✨Back in book 1 Krissa goes back to 20 years to stop a crystal from exploding & to collect it for saving her aunt Jodi with the help of Crystal Jamison. But what happens later is something she doesn't expect. The reality changes. Her aunt is safe & also Krissa's mom is alive & Fox is her boyfriend in this reality when it is Owen in alternate reality. Along with collecting the Crystal , Crystal Jamison saves her aunt ( She hides this from Krissa & only tells her when her aunt dies in this reality). And many things change when compared to the other reality.Krissa goes through some much for changing the past & even though she regrets her decision ,she is happy for having her mother back. Will she succeed in telling others about the Crystal?( that something is wrong with it ) Whom will she love in this reality despite Owen remembering the alternate reality? How will she save her friends from Seth? How does she dissipate energy from the crystal? Why were the members from founding family are targeted to death? ---------------------------------------------------- 💫There is so much to discuss in this book when compared to the previous one. Each chapter reveals a new story because of changing one event in the past. There are many mysteries as why everyone belonging to founding families die despite bringing the crystal back. Many turns in a lot of events,Change in friends circle & the behaviour, there is so much description as how Krissa feels in this reality ( comparing with her alternate one). Each turn reveals a new mystery. Krissa struggling to keep herself at bay without revealing that she just came from another reality.( It is quite difficult though). 💫The story is quite intriguing & keeps us hooked till the end. The vocabulary is easy going & it's been hard for me to keep it down.
I started this book the following day after finishing the first, I was buzzing to know more!
I liked the flashback to the past at the beginning, it was informative and gave a little insight into the history of Clearwater and its magic.
A big thing I felt throughout reading this was the lack of Owen and the gang (the OG). I kept longing for them to return to their lives, the school drama and their friendships, it felt heartbreaking and empty without them. I liked seeing this side of Fox, although it didn't feel real and it was nice to hear more from Felix and get to know him better.
However, I did spot a few things while reading such as, I felt like "geologic age" was used a little too much, it's such an odd phrasing that it stood out, was used in the previous book too. Chapter 33 I found very confusing and hard to follow, as well as the end of chapter 34. It did however tie up some loose ends such as why everything had changed in this reality and where crystal disappeared to at the end of the lack book.
Overall, it was a good story, not as good as Crystal Magic but it did open up a whole new world of possibilities as well as the return of the mystery dad and the binding spell between the gang and the circle. It was quite confusing and difficult to follow 2 different realities and versions of things. From start to finish all I wanted was for them to find a way to set things right and go home! but alas we will have to wait a little longer.
*** Spoiler!
I was SO sceptical of Seth from the start but I still wasn't 100% convinced of everything. At first, I thought he was Eli but then I wondered if Seth was Eli's cousin, the one who wasn't allowed to have the ring. He seemed like a magnet, always showing up everywhere which made me more suspicious of him.
I feel this book left me with more questions than answers, that will likely remain unanswered. What if Krissa found a way and went back to her reality without Crystal? Are they ever going back to their reality? If Seth is just the beginning in this world couldn't they just go home to the other reality? If they went back, would the gang all still be psychics? This was a plot twist I wasn't expecting in this world! I liked it though, it created a bigger bond among them. Who is Levi? "Levi and his grandfather" as far as I'm aware we were never introduced or made aware of a Levi, so this was confusing to understand. Did she pay no attention to the flashbacks? it literally warned her that the crystal held bad power. What did Eli have to do with everything? ***
I'd been able to nab book 1 in the series for free ... and the ploy worked. I got hooked. I bought the next two books (actually the 1-3 set) and continued on.
Now, while I like paranormal stuff, witches aren't always at the top of my interest list. I also sometimes struggle with the whole "high school society" stuff ...so I was a bit surprised at how interested I became in this story. Book 1 definitely left us hanging, and this picks up pretty much where that one left off.
So the girls are in a situation where many things have changed, while others remained the same. I couldn't help but wonder what happened to the Kristyl and Crystal from this reality as the characters we knew from book 1 take over their lives. They HAD been living a completely different lives, were technically different people (well, some things were similar), but that isn't addressed at all.
So just dealing with this odd situation ... trying to step into a life you haven't really lived (different relationships mostly) with no real memories of this set of circumstances. Some things are lost, but other things are better ... just that would be an interesting story! But of course there is much more to deal with than only that. There is the "dark crystal" and the binding and the circle using the power badly, and unexplained tragedy. I have to say I pretty much saw the unveiling of the bad guy a mile away.
Now I realize that there is magic passed down through the founding families ... so having so many "witches" here in one location could be believed. But then add all the other psychics too ... this is an amazingly magic town!
So whereas book 1 introduced the characters, the witches, the quest for the crystal ... here we move on to the consequences from that quest, much more magic and mystery ... and while this particular situation was resolved, we are again left with a cliffhanger ending. I do have book 3 in the set waiting for me ...
After finding out that their time travel trip has changed more than a few things, Krissa is trying to adjust. Soon the circle anchors themselves to the crystal, Krissa is now the odd man out. Not only did she refuse to join the others but actively tried to intervene. Struggling with combining her two timeliness together she is trying to fix what she can to disconnect everyone from the "evil" feeling in the crystal. The flashes to the past holds hints but Krissa isn't sure what they are trying to tell her. She decides to let her other self influence the here and now to see if it will help. While in her search to right the winds of decisions made, Krissa starts to learn more about her powers and about her friends(old and new and forgotten). You can feel the story build to something powerful and a new character coming into play.
'Wild Magic' picks up from where the story ended and the cliffhanger in the last chapter of book one made sure I read the second book too! Kristyl's attempt to being back the enchanted crystal changes everything in the timeline. And only two people know the truth. Jodi is safe and the curse is broken, but her mother is back as well. She's doesn't die from the car accident in this new reality. And Kristyl has been staying in Clearwater since years. The guy she liked may not remember her anymore and the guy she hates, is her new boyfriend. The new normal becomes too much.
This book kept me turning pages furiously. And it's a good sequel that added to the story.
I loved the first book and this one started off with another great twist. Now not only is there magic, witches and forboding, there's time travel and alternate realities. BUT. There's also a love triangle and our main character spending lots of time talking about how she needs to put off dealing with the love triangle because there's danger but the stupid boys keep pushing. It felt forced and unnecessary and a huge distraction from the main plot which was hella more interesting than teenagers whining about who gets to hold whose hand.
That was a satisfying sequel. There was a lot more teenage angst than magic for much of that middle part and maybe too much of the revelation didn't come to the end. I like that it was a complete story, even though the end wasn't as much of an enjoyabe twist/draw-you-in cliffhanger as the first book. More of the characters get fleshed out in this stiry, which I also liked. But, while I liked it and it was an easy quick read, I think it's more of a 3.5 rounded down. That said, I do intend to continue with the series.
The first was interesting but this one was ridiculous I’m sorry I paid for it. Krissa should “know” a a psychic and a witch the Seth was not good. There was too much romantic against going on with so many dying and Krissa should’ve known I. Book one and two that Crystal J was “off” as well. Seriously Ms Freeman teens are not stupid.
Wow yet again. What an incredible story with a fantastic plot line who would have guessed. Seth is such a strange character the circles are well just that but can they overlap and join together to defeat the evil within the world. I’m hoping book 3 has all the answers I’m on tender hooks here
I’d actually rate this 3.5. I suspected the villain almost as soon as he was introduced. I do understand the whole “ this is a small town so folks have heritage names,” but I find the numerous Crystals from assorted times in the tale confusing. I’m not too jazzed with the Krissa/Fox relationship. I also don’t understand why Jodi trusts this guy that just arrived in town, and hires him.
Krissa has ended up in an alternate universe, in a life that might have, could have been, and there is something way more dangerous to deal with than the increasing strength of the witches bound to the crystal. Complicated, intricate, unexpected twists.
This was such a good book! Kept me on the edge of my seat the whole way through. Especially the ending!! Full of danger, intrigue and lots of conflicted emotions.I can't wait to start book 3!
Though I did guess the ending at the beginning, it was still such an entertaining ride! I love the changing relationships and getting to see the characters in a new light. And I'm already reading book three. :)
Really upsetting that she didn't go back to her real timeline as her romance with Owen was what I was really enjoying. At the very least, it is a page turner though.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
now i am hooked. This was such a great, easy and creative book. i was hooked after the first page.
The characters were easy to fall in love with and follow, along with the story. the author made the mental visions so easy and vivid of the surroundings and the characters actions felt so real.
i would highly recommend this author and this book.
Spoiler review. Second time reading this book. Loved it just as much as the first time. :)

We return the world of witches, now accompanied by psychics!
When we were last left off, Crystal and Krissa had found themselves in a new (rather altered) reality because of their stint of time travel to retrieve the lost crystal that belonged to Crystal's namesake aunt. Krissa was nothing short of miserable, learning that her growing adoration for Owen no longer existed and that she was even with Fox, the same guy who wore an attraction charm in her original reality.
Forced to cope with the new world she's stuck in, Krissa learns how even her friends' dynamic has changed. All the while, not only is her aunt, Jodi, still alive, but her mother is as well. And then there's the appearance of this distant cousin, Seth, who learns the truth about what Krissa and Crystal did.
In the first novel, I said that the high school ties were a little much, but now I see why it was so. I enjoyed how everything tied together (literally) for both the witches and the psychics. A nice little twist for the world of magic! Still a nice read for the YA crowd.
This book was an unexpected step up from the previous one!
It was very interesting to see the consequences of the twist at the end of the first book. The Love-Triangle-That-Wasn't in the first book became more of a typical love triangle in this, but only in the fact that there were three (hints of four, I thought, but that could've just been me...) people involved - the rest of the way it is handled is quite unique, given the situation.
The stakes definitely felt higher in this book, the build up much more intense. There was better development of the side characters. Even the writing improved! I'm really excited with how this series is going and I'm looking forward to reading the final book soon!
Pro tip: don't read the summary for the third book before reading this book, as I was spoiled for the reveal of who the antagonist turned out to be...
Oh geeze, time magic always has consequences, and the author is dolling it out like it's her job. Which it is, of course. I enjoyed this book as much as I did the first one, even if I am hating the alternate reality happening here. The story is fast paced with hardly a dull moment. It is a fast paced read and well written. I did notice that there are about 3 more books, so far, and the trend seems to be ending in cliff hangers. However, the story does fit into the three act premise with build up, climax, and resolution so it isn't like you're getting an unfinished book. There is an over all goal that I'm interested in seeing completed. Also, the whovian in me loved the Doctor Who reference with the psychic paper. I would doubt friendship as well, Felix; especially when things get all wibbly wobbly, timey wimey.
