DI Angus Henderson #4

Hunting for Crows

Rate this book
Someone is killing former members of a rock band.

A man drowns in a swollen river, trying to save his dog. In the mid-eighties he was the bass player in the Crazy Crows rock band. When the drummer dies exercising in his home gym, DI Angus Henderson of Surrey and Sussex Police becomes suspicious.

Revisiting the events of the past is a trip down Memory Lane for some, but a rake over the coals of a sordid youth for others. With incidents and dates befuddled and confused by years of boozing and drugs, the DI realises he’s in for the long haul.

Henderson probes deeper and deeper…until he unearths more than he bargained for.

Hunting for Crows is the fourth book in the DI Henderson series. Check out the others:

A good read but not riveting.

The plot of this book was very interesting and at times quite gritty, but I didn’t feel that the story was riveting or fast paced. There was the usual police procedural activity, two cases running concurrently made a little confusing, although when Henderson was released to investigate the recent murders, it did start to become a little more focused. However, having read the previous three books a while ago, I felt that there was something missing. I seemed to remember that we knew a lot more about Angus Henderson’s private life yet, apart from a couple of mentions about his girlfriend, everything revolved around the crimes and the on-going investigation. In a lot of ways, I suppose this was inevitable as it was a highly complex and baffling case, but it took a lot of personalisation away from the main characters, which is something that books in a series rely on. I think we learnt a lot more about the private lives of the rock band that was systematically being murdered in the end.

I did enjoy this one but felt it was a bit flat and the ending just arrived and passed us by – apart from the very carefully disguised twist in the final chapter. I shall certainly read the next one to see if we can return to the Angus Henderson we had started to know and understand and I just hope that I enjoy it much more.

Can do better.

I didn't enjoy reading this book as much as the three previous DI Henderson novels.
It was put down able - whereas the previous ones had kept me engrossed from start to finish. He didn't seem to be as familiar with his locations which prior to this were excellent. It seemed to have too many characters, both central & peripheral. It came across as juggling too many balls at once.
I hope he returns to his previous excellent form with his next book, the interaction between Henderson & his team is pivotal for the whole story - personalities influencing decisions some good, some bad. The main message I got from this book regarding regular characters was that DS Walters may be attending AA meetings in the not too distant future.

Verbose!

Once again it is far too wordy, with totally unnecessary information about characters who have little bearing on the story. I keep wanting to yell “cut to the chase” because the story .....albeit it one with decent bones......seems to meander from one grand idea to the next. Stick to the original story and don’t try to build a whole lot of extra into it, it is distracting and boring.
Spoiler alert.....how can this detective be as effectual as he is made out to be, and yet manages to be beaten and severely injured in every book so far.....and no mention is made in subsequent books of his injuries, but we are told over and over in every book, the same pieces of information in a pitiful attempt at character expansion.

Good, but could be better

This is the fourth DI Henderson book I have read and while they are good reading, and well-researched, they are getting a bit predictable. Inevitably, Henderson's superiors don't believe his theory or thoughts around solving a case and threaten to take him off the case (or do so briefly) and he puts himself in danger by going off to investigate on his own. I'm also not so sure about the frequent battering he takes from the baddies, either, and how realistic that is for a long-time copper. Editing could be better, as there are quite a few typos throughout the book. However, I'd read another in the series if there is one.

Great Series

I like this series . I read the 3rd one ,and went back to start with the beginning. It's well written,, likable characters, and holds your interest.
I gave it only 4 stars, because you NEVER kill the dog Sir.
I plan to finish the series.

Pretty good

Members of a 1980s band are dying . Is it really simply accidents? DI Henderson gets into the investigation after solving a burglary . Pretty confusing at times with a good bit of action . Of course DI Henderson gets injured .

Excellent!

D I Angus Henderson sees lots of action in his attempt to prove the deaths of 3 members of an 80's rock band were murders, not accidents! There are lots of interviews, back history, and investigation before the thrilling conclusion.

Could be so much better

Interesting plots and workman like writing but marred by bad editing as well as casual misogyny and homophobia that really put me off.

Last book in the series - not impressed

I've enjoyed most of the series, but I was sadly disappointed in this book.

I don't want to spoil it for you, but for me, much of it just didn't make sense and I found it very difficult to believe.

But it's the last in series so far and it isn't terrible, so if you like the series, go ahead and read it. If you're new to the series, start with one of the other books in it.

Not a bad book, but as Len frequently says on Dancing with the Stars, not my cup of tea. I prefer a story to be told from the point of view of the main police characters and for them to be the focus of the story. Not the case here. I also don't care for flashbacks and that is a big part of this book, although most of it isn't especially important to the plot.

I loved this book. It was well-written and kept me guessing right to the end. My attention was captured right from the opening scene which was wonderfully written.

I loved the DI in this series because I went back and read the first three. Just unique scenes in a field where too much seems similar.

Just waiting for the fifth book!

A darn good yarn.

I read the previous novel and this back to back and yet again Cameron creates a atmospheric tale.

I really enjoy DI Henderson's character. His dark and brooding nature, mixed with his dry humour make the story lines flow with thrills and some lol moments along the way.

An enjoyable series and I look forward with anticipation to reading book 5? X

Not a bad story but it moved slowly in places. I did have a few questions about why certain things the way they did with the murdered men though. After the explanation for crimes, the happenings did not make sense. DI Henderson seemed a competent and brave man however.

Eighties Rock Band - murder mystery

Nostalgia, interwoven with a modern crime investigation and a cold case. Quite a good plot rif going on here; and a few cynical references to a past governmental figure. A good read but strangely impersonal.

Out of London

An excellent story well constructed in a different place. Locations were well chosen and believable. Brighton and Eastbourne will not be the same again.
