There are many exercise books on the market today and we are well informed on the need and benefits to move and exercise more. This first book by Jeannie, Pilates Without Tears, came to my attention for a number of reasons. First the title caught my from what I know of Pilates, this title really stood out and I was curious to learn what it meant. I have found out that this book is not the usual, traditional exercise manual – it is a lifestyle game changer.
Jeannie Di Bon has created a specialized movement therapy program for people like herself with hypermobility. This book explains her overall approach to Pilates, and a second book, Hypermobility Without Tears, is specific to the hypermobile population, such as people with Ehlers Danlos Syndrome. This first book has valuable insights into integrated movement to guide the body into thinking and working as a whole which will reduce tension, promote balance and prevent injury. This book comes with access to online tutorials. Di Bon also has a separate online subscription program for hypermobility with video sessions called The Zebra Club as well as other stand alone programs. A thorough introduction of her application of Pilates to hypermobility can be found on YouTube in her presentation for the Ehlers Danlos society.
An enjoyable little book. Jeannie's mindful no pain, no strain approach of the Integral Movement Method for Pilates aligns with my own philosophical approach to teaching Pilates. As a fellow hypermobile instructor I found her methodology very helpful in my own practice. The bonus material is great. I would love to see another book specific to hypermobility and Ehlers Danlos Syndrome, along the lines of the talks and workshops Jeannie presents. I look forward to attending one of these when I have the opportunity to do so!
