The vampire Deshwitat, imprisoned for centuries by a sorcerer, is released upon the world and seeks revenge against the one that imprisoned him, and also helps fight against evil as he tries to find his place in the modern world.
Desh is probably one of the coolest vampires and honestly this team is slowly getting better at being together. I wish Mills was a little stronger tbh cuz she seems to be weak af, but here’s hoping. I don’t really get the point of Remi anymore tbh, but she’s here. Can’t wait to start book 6.
5th volume in the continuing Korean vampire manga epic series. This volume continues the Desh vs. fanatic Bishop Bernard fight in the Vatican.
Although the story is quite exciting this moves at a snail's pace. Seriously, the entirety of the last book and 3/4 of this one are dedicated to one single fight!!! It doesn't feel like value for money somehow.
My other two niggles are the use of ridiculous names, the blatant references to other manga titles, which seems less like a homage here are more like ripping off. Even the plot itself is far from original.
So... with all that against it, why should you read this?
1) The artwork. It gets better and better every volume. There are some beautiful panels in this, Desh is becoming more unique and less like a bastard!! clone, and some of the location/background pieces are really nice, lots of intricate detail.
2) This deals with some pretty deep philosophical ideas, but never becomes dense. This volume is a great example of the free will vs. determinism debate as well as touching the problem of evil, and indeed the nature of good vs evil.
3) For all its lack of originality the story is pretty cool. If you like noble vampire anti-heroes, corrupt priests and omens of Armageddon you could do a lot worse than check this out.
I'm also really starting to warm to the characters.
Not the best vampire series in the field, but not bad at all.
Part of the new wave of manhwa (Korean manga) the 'Rebirth' series catalogues the story of a 17th century vampire named Deshwitat L. Rudbich, who has been released from 300 years of stasis by his enemy, the evil sorcerer Kalutika Maybus.
Volume Five sees Deshwitat and his companions finally defeat the crazed Bishop Bernard with the help of some unlikely allies. Returning to the Buddhist temple in Hong Kong, Deshwitat reveals that although their trip to the Vatican was technically a failure (in that he failed to learn the power of Light magic), he nonetheless made an important discovery about his own powers...
