A Broken Fairy Tale #1

Once upon a Time

Rate this book
I don't believe in fairy tales. I don't believe in glass slippers. I don't believe in Prince-Freaking-Charming. Cinderella can kiss my ass. I kiss frogs, sometimes even toads. I've given up on meeting Mr. Right, instead it seems all I meet is Mr. Wrong, Mr. Very-Wrong and even, Mr. Lets-Not-Even-Go-There. Fairy tales are for morons. Well that's what I thought until Gabriel Black barged through my life, turning everything upside down. He's hot, sexy and a little rough around the edges. But, there's a dark secret deep inside, I can see it, taste it and smell it. Now I'm left wondering if he's my Prince Charming or my fairy tale villain. Will I ride away safely into the night, dreaming of happily ever afters? Or, will I stumble and fall in ridiculously high heels only meant for women with a death wish? Once Upon A Time... I met Gabriel Black. - STANDALONE. NO CLIFFHANGER. ROM-COM WITH A TWIST. A modern twist on the legendary fairy tale, Cinderella, but this isn't your average fairy tale. * Intended for audiences over the age of 18. Contains sexual situations, adult language and one hot alpha male who stops at nothing to get what he wants. The heroine? Well, we'll just call her stubborn... for now. *

3,5-4 PRINCE CHARMING STARS

What an enjoyable read! Honestly I wanted to read this book from the moment I heard it was being released! I loved the cover and the tittle and was so happy that I finally read it!! This book was refreshing, fast paced, funny, sweet and hot! The concept wasn't something that I haven't read before but it had something that made it beautiful and unique!

Once Upon a Time, it was a girl who believes in fairy tales...but something made her change her mind and now she doesn't believe in happy endings and she isn't looking for Prince Charming. Because she believes that they don't exist.... Until she meets her Prince Charming...

Payton and Gabriel were so much fun, I loved all their interactions, there was a push and pull between them! I laughed so many times out loud! There is chemistry and sexual tension between them too. Gabriel is charming, smartass, persistent, hot and dominant!Payton is stubborn and funny!

3,5 “Fairy Tales Don’t Exist” Stars.

Payton had her heart broken once, so she doesn’t believe in fairytales anymore. She’s scared that she will end broken again. But while in work she meets Gabriel Black. The mysterious billionaire that becomes immediately taken by her. They are both attracted to each other, but she doesn’t believe in happy ends and is scared to let him in. Gabriel wants her, but she keeps pushing him away. And even Prince Charming eventually gets tired of running in circles, so Payton has to decide if she wants to be the fairytale princess, or if she’s going to let the villains win.

description

First let me tell you that this was a sweet and surprisingly very steamy read. So if you want something light and sexy, this is a good choice.
Why the rating, then? First, the way they met and how they get together was too rushed, too fast and too unrealistic. I didn’t feel the whole “falling in love” part. They just decide they were crazy for each other in about ten minutes. And despite the story having some nice “Cinderella” elements, like the ball, the perfect dress, the mean “sisters and stepmother”, it lacked some development and the story felt like it was being shoved through our throats. The pace was too fast and it didn’t gave us time to completely enjoy it. But the writing was good (although a little too many pre-made quotes and too many.sentences.like.this.) and I still want to read the next installment.

Rating: 3,5 Stars.
Characters Development: Mr. Black was supposed to be sexy and mysterious, or at least that was the idea the author was going for. He hadn’t that “tall, dark and mysterious billionaire” aspect, mainly because he was too sweet for it, but he was sexy and domineering and I liked him. Payton was so annoying and stubborn I just wanted to beat her. I really don’t understand why took her so long to stop being a scared little chicken. Supportive characters were nice but a little too stereotyped, I mean, the whole “funny gay best friend” and “girl best friend who just want fun and night flings” are a little old. I really did like Luca, however, and I’m really curious about his story.

#onceUpon

Once Upon A Time there lives a “prince” and his name is Gabriel Black and he ruled Black Enterprises of New York City. In a city where thousands live, there was only one Payton Miller. This feisty blonde lost all hope on the idea of love and “prince charming” that is until she meets the one man who will rock and shake her world to the core. A man who made her finally see that Cinderella got nothing on her. Who needs a Prince Charming when you got Gabriel Black? As for Payton, she will finally see that maybe fairy tales aren’t for morons and that maybe the happily ever afters do exist.

#gold1

In S.K. Hartley’s Once Upon A Time, she delivers a cute funny romantic comedy that puts a modern twist on Cinderella. Instead of the glass slippers, Payton got a major upgrade with Louboutins. And as for sidekicks, you got yourself two amazing best friends in Kylie and Quinn. And as for Prince Charming there is no need for one when all you need is Gabriel Black. Prince Charming has nothing on Gabriel. Mr. Black is what every women dreams of. He’s hot, domineering, caring, generous, and has a filthy dirty mouth. You won’t be throwing confetti but your panties at him because this man is swoon-worthy. How could you not swoon when Gabriel tells you this: " Princess. I'm your fairy tale. Stop looking for happily ever after and start looking at Once Upon A Time." **swoon**

#once1

Once Upon A Time was the HEA book that I absolutely loved. This book had it all from romance, friendship, a little angst, and comedy. You will laugh and fall in love all with this book. So if you are looking for a book, that will make you believe in the modern day fairy tales, then go read Once Upon A Time. S.K. Hartley reminds us all, no one is too old for fairy tales. To the ladies still looking for love, don’t rush love. Remember that even in fairy tales, the happy endings takes place on the last page. <3

REALLY ENJOYED THIS !!

"Prince Charming doesn't exist Payton" he whispered against my neck "But I do"

Sweet,sexy story....kind of a modern day fairy tale

I suppose it's like a lot of erotic romance stories out there....hot CEO, falls for and persues reluctant girl, but I think what saved it, for me, was that it was well written, had some BRILLIANT characters and was so funny.I loved Payton and her friend Kylie was just hilarious...

"He's delicious.Oh my God,have you seen that ass?Sweet Jesus,I think I'm having a hot flash.Can you even get hot flashes at twenty four? Oh my God,I've started the menopause"

Oh and Gabriel had a dirty mouth

"Tell that to my cock.I've been hard ever since you told me you weren't wearing panties......so Tell me ,are you wearing panties right now? Are you wet for me princess?"

Oh, don't judge me....I can't resist a dirty talker

It had it all...

Prince Charming..
Cinderella..
The Wicked step mother character
Two ugly sisters

Will definitely read more in the series!

I loved this book I loved Gabriel even before we knew who he was, "you know, I like my woman on their knees. But you, Miss Miller, took that to a whole other level." He growled as I took another step back. "Door close." Quinn he is like the gay best friend I wish I had, "Jesus. You had sex with a millionaire!" Quinn shrieked, his voice high enough to give me an instant headache. 'Please tell me he has the biggest d*** you've ever seen!" Gabriel nothing is off limits with that boy he states how he feels, "tell that to my c***. I've been hard ever since you told me you weren't wearing panties." He is always turned on by his girl, "eff, that makes me hard every time," Gabriel groaned into the phone." I hope Luca and Kylie get a book an Quinn I would totally read his if S.K. wrote it.

4.5 stars, full review here => http://afterdarkbooklovers.com/2014/1...

What girl/woman doesn’t love a good fairy tale? Just like the show of the same name, this book is loosely based on the popular fairy tale, Cinderella. (To be clear, while they share the same name, this book is very much its own story and not a direct copy of the show).

You have all the main characters of the fairy tale:

Cinderella – Payton
Prince Charming – Gabriel Black aka Mr. Tall-Dark-and Dangerous, aks TDD
Jaq and Gus, the Mice (work with me here) – Kylie and Quinn
The Wicked Step-Mother – Kate McKenna, aka Payton’s boss
The Wicked Step-Sisters – Clarissa and Katrina Barton, aka Payton’s bitchy co-workers
The Fairy Godmother – Vera Wang ???

Ok, maybe I’m stretching it, but you get the idea.

. . . And they lived happily ever after.
What a crock of shit.

Payton doesn’t believe in love, or happily ever afters. Prince Charming? Pfft. Forget about it. She is so jaded after her HS supposed Prince Charming tripped and landed his tongue in some other girl’s vagina. Ok, that’s not really how it happened, but I’m sure the douche would say something like that as an excuse. With a broken heart, Payton gives up on the idea of love and all that fairy tale nonsense.

Upon receiving news from the evil boss troll, Kate, about a PR account with a new client, Payton goes out to celebrate with her posse – Kylie and Quinn. We learn two things about Payton on this night. She’s a nosy-Nancy, and she’s a klutz (I can so relate, to the second part, that is). Oh yeah, and for the right guy, she’ll spread her legs like Nadia Comăneci, and take names later. Like much later. . . .you see where this is going, right?

Aside from the on-going commentary from her BFFs, Payton has a hilarious inner-monologue (WARNING: do not Drink and Read this book, you don’t want to spew all over your kindle in a fit of laughter.)

My jaw dropped.
I also think my vagina pretty much howled in delight before detaching itself from my body, making a beeline for the sexy stranger in front of me and dry humping his expensive shoes before running back and reattaching itself. Wet and ready like a damn cheerleader.

Yeah, don’t even try to visualize that.

It should come as no surprise that her one-night romp with a sexy stranger is not the last she sees of him. And he clearly didn’t have his fill of her that night.

“Are you going to speak or do I have to spank you to get your voice to work?”
I nodded.
Wait. What?
“No!” I yelped.

While Payton frustrated me at times with her doubts that happily ever after would be in the cards for her, I liked how she didn’t bow down to Gabriel’s advances, and made him work for it. I can also appreciate how she didn’t want lavish gifts, when she so easily could have used him for his money. (Side note: with this book releasing the same week as Easy Virtue, you couldn’t find two more different female characters, other than both don’t believe in love).

“Prince Charming doesn’t exist, Payton,” he whispered against my neck. “But I do.”

While the ending of this book is sure to put a smile on your face, it felt a bit rushed, with everything falling into place a bit too easily. But, it is a fairy tale after all, so I’ll give it a pass.

This is a perfect book to read when you feel overloaded with the angst and emotionally draining romance books. It’s light, fun, fresh and sexy. Can’t beat that with a stick!

Everyone deserves to have their once upon a time and happily ever after.

Payton is the girl we all experience once in our life. We get hurt and stop believing love and forever can happen. We start believing every guy is a toad, and they won't turn into Prince Charming after we kiss them. Gabriel Black is Payton's game changer. He's the one to make all her dreams come true. But as stubborn as she is, will they get their own once upon a time?

The characters, oh my gosh, these characters. Seriously, the friendship of Quinn, Kylie, and Payton is perfect. I laughed sooo much. These three drunk...hilarious.

I loved Once Upon A Time. It was different and unique in its own way. It was funny and saddening. It was real, but a fairytale at the same time. I definitely think this story is worthy of 6 stars. Who knows, maybe it'll help others believe that fairytales aren't always fiction. (: ~ Keisha, 6 stars

~~~
Fairytales are for suckers....and if Once Upon A Time is a twisted version of a fairytale, then I guess I am a sucker. Because I thoroughly enjoyed this funny, flirty, fascinating book about a girl that’s no one’s princess and her not-quite Prince Charming.
Payton Miller doesn’t believe in love, fairytales and happily ever after. Because there’s no such thing as Prince Charming... Or so she thinks.
When she stumbles upon Gabriel Black, the tall, dark and dangerous stranger that makes her flustered, frustrated and weak in the knees, she can’t seem to stop herself from thinking about him or wanting him. He’s mysterious, private and closed off – and has her wondering which way is up.
Is Gabriel her knight in shining armor, or just another toad on the road to never finding true love?
I really, really liked this book and there is one MAJOR reason why. GABRIEL BLACK. He was a bit dominating, a bit rough, a bit sweet and a bit unexpected and all that made one hell of a man. He is most definitely Prince Charming material, in my book, in this book, in all the books. Sigh.
There was a lot to like about Once Upon A Time, from the funny and supportive friends – Kylie needs her HEA too, Ms. Hartley – to the interesting take on the age-old fairytale, Cinderella, with its evil, heartless villains and designer shoes. I enjoyed the whirlwindedness (let’s just pretend that’s a word, ok?) of their meeting(s) and the way Payton and Gabriel acted and reacted to one another. I didn’t always like Payton on her own, however. She came across too bitter, too focused on the wrong things, and, a personal pet peeve of mine, too blind to what her heart, her body, her friends and her suitor were saying. Sometimes, you just HAVE to listen....
Having said that, this book was simply a good time reading. Nothing too stressful and angsty, a bunch of great characters with a potential for MORE, and a slightly predictable but always enjoyable storyline. If enjoying this book makes me a sucker, then fine. Call me a sucker. ~ Beth, 4 stars
Never disappointed when I read one of S.K. Hartley's books!
Review to come with my tour date of 12/1...
**FULL REVIEW**
“He was my Prince Charming, the one who could sweep me off my feet while belly laughing at his silly jokes. Fast forward to college. We were still together, still very much inseparable and pretty much in love. He claimed all of my firsts as I did for him. Everything was perfect…or so I thought.”
Payton Miller no longer believes in happily ever after…or fairytale love stories. Having your heart shattered will do that to a girl. Getting over the loss of her Prince Charming has done great things for her working career though.
Payton can put in the hours necessary to become what she’s always wanted, a PR account manager. In the meantime, her boss Kate, definitely keeps her busy with whatever she can…until one day, Payton gets a break. She is finally asked to meet with a potential client! Of course, her nerves are through the roof because this is the absolute first time Payton has been able to do something like this. She had no idea whom she was going to meet…or that it would be the beginning of a story not unlike the very fairytales she avoids.
“What? Just because you don’t believe in fairy tales, it doesn’t mean they aren’t real. Come on, Pay, from what you’ve told me this guy is pretty much you but with a dick. He’s met his match and he loves it, that’s why he’s getting a kick out of it. You’re exactly the same. You like that he challenges you, catches you by surprise and could f*** you into next week if you asked him. He’s Prince Charming material in his own way. He may not ride a white horse and you might not be a damsel in distress, but he could sweep you off your feet just as fast.”
This is one of those books where you just love getting lost in. It’s an easy love story with plenty of twists and turns, not unlike a true fairytale. Hartley does a fantastic job in Once Upon a Time in that although it takes from Cinderella, it is truly original and fun. I loved every word, and how her British “accent” came out from time to time…it makes it that much better.
Fairy tales are for morons 4.5
My first time with S. K. Hartley and I loooved it. The story starts with Payton hungover and she's with Mr. Not-So-Charming. Which basically means rescue by none other than best friend Quinn. Quinn is hilarious and to die for and the kind of BFF that every girl should have. Then we stumble onto Kylie, and that my friend completes the trio of BFFs.
Alpha male, Mr. Black enters the picture and all vee jay jays explode on contact. Boy is he hot of what. I had to stop reading a few times because oh man that man has a mouth on him.
Okay, so Payton's had her heart broken and so she doesn't believe in HAPPY EVER AFTER. Reading about her past definitely made me side with her and I actually at one point wanted to write a blog on the first half of the synopsis of this story. I get why she says it, every girl who's ever dated a douche can relate. But deep down you know it ladies we are a sucker for fairy tales. So anyhoo, Payton encounters Mr. Black and she hates him, classic girl meets boy and she hates his guts. But oh boy, does Mr. Black do everything in his power to throw a wrench at Payton's plan to not enter his HOT ZONE. So like all happy endings, Mr. Black wins Payton's heart and that's when the shit hits the fan. Secrets are revealed and Payton is left with a broken heart.
Le sigh! I started to not to believe in fairy tales, glass slippers, Prince-Freaking-Charming. The world is full of evil step-mothers and sisters, there are villains at every corner waiting to put a ice-stake through your heart and leave it melting with your life force.
I won't say anything more but leave you with this, this was hilarious, sweet and uber sexy and sizzling hot.
I for one think fairy tales are for morons but hey I'm a moron cos I'm a complete and utter sap for happy every afters.
The 1st book of 2015 gets a 4.5 solid uber hot stars.
I am sick and tired of books in which the heroine has an annoying gay best friend and a very annoying DO AS I SAY OR ELSE girlfriend and she is also a doormat that will do ANYTHING her friends tell her to.
I would hate to have this type of friends who cant ever accept my opinion and always want everything to be done their way. Those are not best friends, those are selfish friends.
Once upon a time, there was a girl who didn’t believe in happily ever afters. She wasn’t looking for a prince to sweep her off her feet because she knew they didn’t exist; she learned the hard way that all men did was destroy and betray. So, this fair maiden closed herself off from loving, giving her all to her job and her friends. She was done kissing frogs and meeting villains. She was no damsel in distress; she would write her own ending, and it wouldn’t include any prince because, in her mind, he wasn’t out there, and, even if he was, she wasn’t searching for him.
And that’s the viewpoint Payton Miller had ever since her heart was broken; in her mind, fairy tales and once upon a time love could kiss her ass, and she was fine with that outlook. It made everything easier for her – that is until she literally stumbles upon Gabriel Black – a man who could end up being the fairy tale villain and destroy what’s left of her heart or her prince charming, the man who would show her that happily ever afters do happen as long as you’re willing to give in to your feelings and experience them.
I can’t even tell you how much I LOVED this book. It’s a refreshing look at the whole happily ever after idea and what happens when the heroine says enough is enough. There’s only so many “Mr. Wrongs,” Mr. Very Wrongs,” and “Mr Not-So-Charmings” one girl can meet until she gives up on the male species, and Payton is clearly there. And while I can’t say that I liked her playing so hard to get when it came to Gabriel, I understood the motives behind her actions. When someone gets burned as bad as she did from someone that she gave her whole heart to, it’s definitely going to leave a bad taste in her mouth, and then to compound that with a plethora of misfits who don’t know the first thing about being with a girl, I would probably give up too, but Gabriel was different from the start, and Payton realized that; she just didn’t know if she could give herself to someone again and risk the pain that could potentially come with it.
Another aspect of the book that I loved was the secondary characters. Payton’s best friends are amazing, and Kylie definitely deserves her own book. S.K. Hartley clearly illustrates the bond that Payton, Kylie, and Quinn have, and she does a great job of giving all of them their own distinct personalities that only endear them more to readers. They’re definitely a group of friends I would like to be a part of; they mesh so well together and give one another what the others need at all times.
Gabriel Black is the filthiest talking Prince Charming I’ve ever seen, and it so works for me! But the more S.K. shows readers about him, the more we are to understand that he is so much more than the sexy man who wants to sweep Payton off her feet, and we are cheering for him to get his girl despite how stubborn she is at every turn. There’s definitely a mystery about Gabriel that slowly unravels throughout the story and when it all comes together, it makes perfect sense why he seems so illusive at the beginning.
Once Upon A Time embodies all of the reasons that I love to read. It has kickass main and supporting characters and the perfect blend of wit, steam, and drama that will capture readers’ attention from the start and not release them until they’re finished. I laughed out loud on numerous occasions due to Payton’s hijinks with her best friends. I swooned over Gabriel’s attempts to win Payton over and prove to her that he was the real thing, and I cackled when Payton would put the wicked step sisters and wicked witch in their places. It’s a fantastic spin on a modern day fairy tale and it’s one I’ll definitely be re-reading.
Simply brilliant :)
This is the first book I read by S.K. Hartley but I have to say that I made a huge mistake in not reading any of her books before now. I had a blast reading this story. It was fun, hot, romantic, heartbreaking. Pretty much it had a little bit of everything and it was so intriguing and entertaining to read that I read it in one sitting. I simply couldn't stop :)
Payton and Gabriel were so much fun to read about. I loved their interactions and constant verbal sparring. And damn, were they hot together. I have to caution you... there were some extremely pantie melting scenes. And Gabriel Black is definitely drool-worthy with his black hair and penetrating grey eyes, washboard abs and the body of a Greek god :) YUMMY :) I definitely enjoyed his dominant streak but I loved the contrast with his tender and caring side. It made him just that much more attractive :) And ...wow... does he know how to express his feelings. Any man who can say how he feels and makes it sound that hot and romantic at the same time deserves to get his girl ;)
Payton, on the other hand is completely against anything longer than a one-night stand :) She has some baggage from her past that dictates her actions and in any case she is quite stubborn to relent and acknowledge her feelings. And that's where the verbal sparring and the sexual tension between her and Gabriel come from. I have to say that these parts were some of my favorites. I loved the moments when she was going from 0 to 60 every time he touches her and in a second she was boiling with anger because of something Gabriel said :D So much fun :D
A great addition to the story are Payton's best friends, Kylie and Quinn. They are both kind of eccentric and so much fun. I am really hoping to get the story of Kylie and Luca. I think it will be also a great one :)
In a few words, the book is great. It is a light and funny read with a touch of sizzling hot. So definitely a must read :) I can't wait to see what else S. K. Hartley will come up with. And I am definitely diving into reading the rest of her books :)
S.K. Hartley has done it again! Once Upon A Time is sexy, funny, witty and down right amazing. I laughed, swooned and then laughed some more. The banter in this book between the characters is fantastic. I loved every word of this book!!
"fairy tales are for morons"
Gabriel Black is the next book boyfriend everyone will be raving about. He's cocky, alpha, dominate, panty-dropping, and Prince Charming all rolled into one delicious package! This man is just gah! Perfection!
Payton was one of those heroins that you just relate to. She is funny, smart, sassy, stubborn (But what female isn't) and your everyday girl just trying to make it on her own.
Of course they both have pasts...ones that make them who they are. Payton is scared to death of being hurt again. She refuses to let love in, and Gabriel scares the shit out of her even though their chemistry together is off the charts HOT!! The scenes between these two had me reaching for the snow that was falling outside my window while I was reading!
I haven't been disappointed with any of SK's books yet and this one lived up to every expectation I had! If you want a funny, sexy book that will have you screaming in frustration (in every possible way that is good) then you must read this book!!!
4.5 Fairytales are for morons stars!
This story was fantastic! It's so different from everything out there right now. I loved how Payton was a strong herione, but was so vulnerable as well. She let her past dictate her future but when she met the one man who made her question herself she put up one hell of a fight. Mr. Black. Gabriel Black....that name screams alpha male!
"That voice....did things to me that should have some kind of warning label.
WARNING: This voice turns women stupid."
Haha! Loved that line! There are plenty of laugh out loud moments but at the same time there are plenty of panty melting scenes too. That first encounter is off the charts hot!
So if your looking for a short, sexy, quirky read this is the book for you! Be prepared to fall for the hot alpha male Mr. Black.
<---that name just rolls off the tongue.
And can I say I hope like hell we get a Luca Black book. (That would be the British sexy as sin brother to Gabriel)
“There was no such thing as fairy godmothers or magic pumpkins. Instead, there’s only villains, poisoned apples and a whole load of ugly sisters just waiting to pounce" Well if that isn't the truth, then I don't know what is! This book is about a girl who believed in Fairy Tales at a young age, and of course some douche canoe in college ruined it for her! Then comes along her Prince G.. And he Saves her life. Even though we all know she doesn't need saving! This was a super light read, and I enjoyed it very much!! S.K. Hartley, you gave us Prince Gabriel, now we need our Knight in Shining Armour Luca's story!!!!! Pretty Pretty Please!! Yes, I'm begging! This book is definitely a must read, if you like modern day Cinderella stories, and it even had a little Sweet Home Alabama at the end!!
This is my first book from S.K. Hartley, but I know it won’t be my last. Her writing is so enjoyable. Between the quick wit, the sarcasm, the sexual innuendoes, the supporting cast, and then of course the hot, sexy, Gabriel Black, she really knows how to hook a reader in! One of her opening lines grabbed me right away–
“I believed that I would one day grow into a princess and Prince Charming would rescue me on his white horse and whisk me away into the distance… And they lived happily ever after. What a crock of shit.”
Peyton has pretty much been unlucky with love. The one guy she was sure was her very own Prince Charming, turned out to be a cheating douche. Rather than keep getting hurt, she has decided that “flings” are easier to deal with. That’s until Mr. Tall-Dark-and-Dangerous (Mr. TDD) walks into her life.
Gabriel Black (aka Mr. TDD) is sexy, domineering, demanding, and very brash. He says whatever he wants, no matter what the outcome is. Plus, he is used to getting what he wants this time, just so happens to be Payton.
“My name is Gabriel Black… and I’m going to fuck your now.”
I kind of thought that Payton’s expectations for love, were a little unrealistic. She wanted the happily ever after, even though she didn’t believe in it anymore.
“I don’t need saving, I’m no one’s Princess.”
But, honestly she is really just afraid of love and after being hurt and that is understandable. Plus, when you think about it, fairy tales and these perfect love stories are drilled into little girl’s heads from a very young age; which makes it hard for women to expect anything less than their very own Prince Charming.
“There’s no such thing as Prince Charming or Mr. Right. There’s no fairytale adventure, dramatic once upon a time love and there certainly isn’t a happily ever after.”
I absolutely LOVED Payton’s best friends Quinn and Kylie. Quinn has been her friend since high school and he is seriously the “sexual innuendo” master; which makes for some very funny one-liners. Kylie and Payton met in college and her at times “airhead and bad ass attitude” made for lots of laughs. There were so many funny and memorable scenes with these three, but one of my favorites was all the DEFCON’s they called- hilarious! Even though this is a series, Payton’s story is wrapped up and you aren’t left with a cliffhanger. I believe the next books in the series will be about some of the secondary characters… my vote is for Kylie and Luca to get a book.
Wow. All I can say is that I f**king LOVE this book! This was my first read from S.K. Hartley and, let me tell you, she has just added another loyal reader to what I am sure is already a long list. I will read anything and everything that she releases, it was that good! The twist on the fairy tale of Cinderella was so unique and well written, I couldn't put it down...scratch that, I didn't want to put it down. I even ditched my Christmas decorating so that I could read this book in one sitting.
This is a freestanding novel, but I wish that it wasn't. I need more of the swoon worthy Gabriel Black and the sometimes infuriating, but sweet and unlucky in love Payton Miller. Right from the start, S.K.'s version of Cinderella was thrust at us in such an interesting and contemporary way that I found myself guessing which characters represented the original tale. The author did not miss anyone and it was fun trying to figure out who was who.My favorites besides the h and H were definitely her two BFFs, Quinn and Kylie - hilarious!
Payton happens upon Gabriel after she, quite literally, falls at his feet and then things happen rapidly from there. Mr. Black is so sexy and the things he says made me wish it was me who found him. "I like my privacy, and you, Miss Miller, just compromised it with your blonde hair, electric blue eyes and a peach dress that should only ever be worn by the bedroom floor." Um, yeah, I was just as speechless as Payton with that line. I expected a hot tryst because who can tame an alpha like Gabriel Black? Well, apparently one woman can, but she isn't an easy one to catch and keep. This was refreshing for me because, in this genre, you usually see the h hopelessly pursuing the H, not the other way around. "I'm not the big bad wolf, Payton. I'm not a fairy tale villain but I'm not Prince Charming either. There's no reason to be afraid of what your mind is telling you. Prince Charming doesn't exist, Payton," he whispered against my neck. "But I do."
I won't provide any spoilers, but I will tell you that we get our happily ever after and the way it happens will make you fall in love all over again with Gabriel, Payton and Ms. Hartley's incredible ability to tell an amazing story. Run, don't walk to get Once Upon a Time!!!
Once Upon A Time is a fun romantic comedy with a modern day twist on a classic fairy tale. But this isn't your everyday fairy tale... It's so much sexier!
It starts out with our heroine, Payton, in a bit of a Coyote Ugly predicament and it's so freaking hilarious to watch the scene unfold. I could tell right from the beginning sentence that Payton was going to draw me into her little fairy tale and I was not disappointed.
After landing an important job at the PR firm she works for, she goes out to celebrate with her friends, and this is where we meet our hero, Mr. Tall, Dark, & Dangerous. He's dark, he's mysterious, he's sexy, but to me... He's kinda just an ass throughout most of the book.
After their romp in his office, as what was supposed to be a hot one night stand, they come face to face yet again and that's when the real fun begins. Gabriel pursues Payton with everything he's got, and of course, Payton pushes him away with everyone she's got. They banter back and forth with so much sexual tension it's a wonder they don't spontaneously combust.
Payton has been hurt in the past and doesn't believe in fairy tales and happily ever afters, but eventually Gabriel manages to woo her just enough to get her to agree to go to the "ball". Unfortunately this is where their fairy tale takes a turn for the worse, and I'm back to thinking Gabriel is an ass again.
Not to worry though, there's a pretty great grovel scene that gives us a better look at Gabriel and why he is the way he is, which leaves me thinking maybe he's not such an ass after all. I wouldn't go so far as to say he's Prince Charming, but he's absolutely perfect for Payton and I'm so glad she finally gets her fairy tale ending.
Of course I have to mention that Payton has two of the coolest best friends ever and I really hope that S.K. Hartley decides to give them their own HEAs. I generally don't read M/M romances, but Quinn is such an awesome GBF that I would love to read more about him! And Kylie and Luca's story is so not over, I just know it!
Every girl wishes for a happily ever after. A prince who will sweep her off of her feet, one who will make every childhood fantasy come true. We all want the glass slipper and a magical ending filled with castles and dreams come true.
Well every girl except for Payton Miller. Having her heart broken by her first love, she has given love the proverbial middle finger and believes it’s for the weak. She’d rather have flings and fun and keep her heart in tact.
After meeting Gabriel Black, who by the way is freakin HOT with a capital “H”—she swoons. Practically keels over.
“I also think my vagina pretty much howled in delight before detaching itself from by body…”
No matter how Gabriel makes her feel, Payton still guards her heart and has so many doubts. Plus they’ll be working together. But how can you not fall for him?!!! It’s kinda unavoidable. Mr. TDD sets his sights on Payton, and he always gets what he wants. She tries to push him away and keep their relationship professional, but when he says things like this, how can you turn him down?!
“I won’t touch you, I won’t breathe you in, I won’t think about how you screamed when you shattered around me, I won’t remember how sweet your lips taste or how that Southern accent you try to hide beneath turns me on ten-fold when you’re angry. I won’t picture you when I’m taking a shower, I won’t run over every line, every curve, every contour of your body in my mind, I’ll push away the thoughts of you whimpering as I imagine sliding back inside your body.”
WOW!!! The chemistry between these two was CRAZY. Over the top scorching!
There were so many LOL moments and the secondary characters in this book were hilarious. SK Hartley sure knows how to capture humor. I haven’t read any of her books prior to this one, and I will definitely be checking them out. She will have you laughing so hard one minute and swooning the next. This was a great lighthearted read that I really enjoyed. Check it out!
4.5 FANTASTIC Fairytale Stars!!!!!!!!
I've had this on my TBR lists since it released and finally decided I'd dive in after seeing lots of awesome feedback on Facebook from my friends and the author. I've been on a sappy love story kick lately and wanted a change in story theme. So was looking for an angst filled story but with LOL moments that'd keep the book light and fun.
This book was everything I wanted and it even got me teary eyed near the end but I'm a sucker for sappy scenes so loved it since the overall feel of the book was light and fun. Payton and Gabriel are seriously funny as hell and their banter back and forth was awesome. I was highlighting non stop throughout reading this book bc there was just so many lines I just loved.
I loved that this book was in no way at all predictable. Every time I thought I knew what was happening next the total opposite happened keeping me on my toes and glued to my kindle. I loved the whole theme of 'Fairytales Are For Morons' it was hilarious. Seeing the push and pull between Payton and Gabriel along with Payton and her friends as they all fought over Fairytale's and HEA's. Payton's friends were a ray of sunshine in this book. I loved them to pieces. Along with a certain British Hottie names Luca. I am hoping he is getting a book next!
This is a MUST READ if you want a book full of angst, hot steamy scenes, and LOL moments. Along with infuriating moments where u want to crawl into the kindle and kick everyone's asses while wearing gorgeous glass heels haa!
Fav Quotes:
"What the hell did they feed British men? A spoonful of handsome and a glass of charm?"
"You fell into my office and fucking dominated it."
"It doesn't matter how hard or how far you push, he'll always come back for you."
"Prince Charming doesn't exist. But I do."
"For once, please, stop worrying about the risks and grab your once upon a time."
I hate to admit it but this is actually the first book by S.K. Hartley that I have read and I am happy to say that I will be looking into more of her works. It is usually a cover that grabs my attention first but for Once Upon a Time it was the tagline…..Cinderella can kiss my ass…..Fairytales are for Morons….Yep that definitely grabbed my attention and had me wanting more.
Well I got more, so much more than I expected. This is a lighter read for me as I tend to lean toward the dark romances with brooding men. I was pleasantly surprised to find myself so caught up on the story and the quick witted friendship between Payton, Quinn and Kylie. Not to mention the steamy scenes and the sexual tension radiating between Payton and her "Prince Charming".
Gabriel Black....a/k/a Tall Dark and Dangerous....well I think I loved him before I knew who he was but his direct approach had me wanting to know more about this private, controlling man. I love that he didn't let Payton push him away and his subtle ways of making it seem as if he had forgotten her while she was at a loss to get him off her mind.
The story is quick paced, full of humor, friendship, love and a whirl wind romance. Payton is hell bent on not falling in love due to a college romance gone bad. But Gabriel is not used to being told no and pursues Payton until she can no longer fight her feelings. Sparks fly, tempers flair, feelings are exposed and ripped apart but in the end we get is our Once Upon a Time.
Don't let this story pass you by. Grab your copy and fall in love with Gabriel and Payton.....the supporting characters are pretty entertaining too. I am looking forward to seeing if we will get a book about Kylie or Quinn. Fingers crossed.
There are books you read thinking you know where they are going to head and that you know all the answers, but this book wasn't that. Several times I thought, Oh-this is the moment--right here where she gives in and decides he is in fact her Prince Charming, but S.K. Hartley brilliantly wrote the story a different way. I love, love, LOVE--did I say love?--yes I love Gabriel Black. He is going to be the book world's new book boyfriend. He's hot, confident, damaged (and don't we love a man that needs a little fixing)and he talks sexy. That man had my panties on fire. And Payton-she is a spitfire. She knows what she believes in and who she is and she stays true to herself even when I was screaming at her that she's a stubborn ass. Still, I couldn't put this book down. These two characters had such amazing chemistry. The push and pull had me wanting to jump into my kindle and undress them myself and lock them in a room and tell them they couldn't come out till they worked their junk out. This book made me laugh, cry, throw things, but laugh a whole lot. The supporting characters were outstanding. Kylie, Quinn and Luca added so much depth and entertainment to the story. I wanted them to be my friends.
If you're looking for a book that will frustrate you (in a good way) and make you believe in fairy tales all over again, this is the book for you. You'll want to go back to being a little girl who wants to go to the ball, have the fancy dress and the little glass slippers. Once upon a time, dreams can come true and that's what this book will make you see. Beautifully written without being too sappy. LOVED it!!!
5 STARS
5 BOOKGASM STARS,its been a while since I had real good bookgasm so thank you S.K HARTLEY I didn't realise how badly i was in need of good old Bookgasm
I've been trying to think of ways to describe this book and it's certainly not your typical fairytale more like a new adult modern fairytale with a twist and the twist being our mc Payton is no Disney princess and she has no desire to be one,she doesn't believe in fairytales or happily ever afters all thanks to her donut of an ex boyfriend/first love you see up until her donut ex broke her heart she believed in happy ever afters but after catching said donut in a compromising position with a cheer leader Payton stops believing in love and decides to concentrate on her career.Payton works for one of New Yorks top PR firms as a personal assistant to the firms owner,so basically peyton does all the shit jobs fetching coffee,photocopying all that crap until her boss gives her a chance of signing her first account,Enter one Gabriel Black(swoon) yeah move over Mr Grey coz Mr Black just moved to town.
Can Gabriel convince Payton that fairytales can come true? There's only one way to find out go one-click this baby.
I don't want to give any more away just please take my word for it and go one-click Once Upon A Time.Both Peyton and Gabriel are fantastic characters,Peyton two best friends Kylie and Quinn are hilarious every girl needs best friends like those two,Once Upon A TIME is a sexy funny belter of a book and I highly recommend it
I freaking LOVED this book! I'm a fan of S.K. Hartley's books anyway, but this is my favorite of hers so far. When I saw that she was putting this book out, and read the synopsis, I knew I had to read it! I was not disappointed. I devoured this book. It pulled me in hook, line and sinker. I love the irony, the comedy, the wit, the sex. Oh the feels! :) Who knew "Prince Charming" could be such an Alpha male. Gabriel Black had everyone swooning in the book. He had ME swooning. Welcome to the list of BBF's. I loved all the characters. Almost every woman can probably relate to Payton and her cynical views on fairy tale endings. We all have the kooky friend in Kylie and wish we had a friend like Quinn to complete our circle. I loved the way this book had a small spin on the Cinderella tale. This could be an amazing Movie. It'd be on my DVD shelf in no time. I can't wait to see what's next. Anxious to read more about Kylie and Luca and the rest of the gang. 5 Well deserved stars from me.
Once Upon A Time is a sweet, sexy, and laugh out loud romance. This book is a standalone with no cliffhanger. A+ for that! You’ll experience good writing, an interesting storyline, and loveable characters when you dive into this one.
Payton is an interesting character. She’s stubborn, bitter and somewhat frustrating in the most likeable way possible. She doesn’t believe in Once Upon a Times and Happily Ever Afters. It’s too difficult to buy into the fairy tales once you’ve been burned.
When Payton first meets Gabriel, he has an unexpected effect on her. He oozes dominance and sex appeal that is difficult for even her to resist. Gabriel’s character kind of threw me for a loop. My first impression was that he was a dismissive and womanizing ego maniac. Wrong! So very wrong! If a perfect man were to ever existed, it would be Gabriel.
As for the supporting characters in this book, I need their contact info. ASAP! Everyone needs a Quinn and Kylie in their lives. I would love to see how Kylie’s story plays out. Every side character in this book is perfectly woven into the storyline to create just the right amount of emotion, encouragement and drama for the journey to a happily ever after…
Cinderella with a twist. What caught my attention most was the blurb really. I like it actually, a somewhat cynical view on the whole fairy tale. Payton was definitely a different heroine, she was honest, sometimes crazy, stubborn and feisty. The elusive HEA is something she didnt really believe in, something she tried to avoid after being disappointed. Kylie and Quinn were definitely a laugh trip and then some those two were over the top but loyal.
Gabriel and Payton had the sexual tension in spades, it may have been a little fast paced in that regard but you cant help but want to root for them. It is not everyday you meet someone that strikes you first time. I like that they both seemingly accepted the other for who they are though, quirks, background and all.
While this isnt some deep story but the theme and message about not looking for the HEA but the once upon a time and recognizing it when it was there was cute in that way. Everyone might dream or want a fairy tale but no everyone will risk it. This maybe my first S.K. Hartley book the characters and interesting story will grab you attention. I look forward to Kylie and maybe even Quinn's book in this series.
