Neil Gaiman delivered one of the classic comic books of the 1990s with The Sandman. A team of honest and acerbic reviewers take on The Sandman, taking each graphic novel in sequence and providing unflinching -- and fun to read -- analysis.
I enjoyed reading this book because it allowed me to relive the main Sandman series. Those who know my reading habits know I am extremely reluctant to re-read things because there is so much else out there to read but I do like to revisit things through other means and this fits the bill. Although I enjoyed the experience, I found the analysis to be pretty weak and surface level. It affirmed some of my thoughts about the comic but I wish it would have delved deeper. I don't know anything about the contributors but it felt like a bunch of college students or recent college grads analyzing the books using what they learned in their gen ed liberal arts classes. So not a lot of new insights but a fun return to what I loved about these books. If you haven't read them, they really are quite spectacular on a number of levels.
