Kathryn Shay is a lifelong writer. At fifteen, she penned her first 'romance,' a short story about a female newspaper reporter in New York City and her fight to make a name for herself in a world of male journalists - and with one hardheaded editor in particular. Looking back, Kathryn says she should have known then that writing was in her future. But as so often happens, fate sent her detouring down another path.

Fully intending to pursue her dream of big city lights and success in the literary world, Kathryn took every creative writing class available at the small private women's college she attended in upstate New York. Instead, other dreams took precedence. She met and subsequently married a wonderful guy who'd attended a neighboring school, then completed her practice teaching, a requirement for the education degree she never intended to use. But says Kathryn, "I fell in love with teaching the first day I was up in front of a class, and knew I was meant to do that."

Kathryn went on to build a successful career in the New York state school system, thoroughly enjoying her work with adolescents. But by the early 1990s, she'd again made room in her life for writing. It was then that she submitted her first manuscript to publishers and agents. Despite enduring two years of rejections, she persevered. And on a snowy December afternoon in 1994, Kathryn Shay sold her first book to Harlequin Superromance.

Since that first sale, Kathryn has written twenty-one books for Harlequin, nine mainstream contemporary romances for the Berkley Publishing Group, and two online novellas, which Berkley then published in traditional print format.

Kathryn has become known for her powerful characterizations - readers say they feel they know the people in her books - and her heart-wrenching, emotional writing (her favorite comments are that fans cried while reading her books or stayed up late to finish them). In testament to her skill, the author has won five RT BookClub Magazine Reviewers Choice Awards, three Holt Medallions, two Desert Quill Awards, the Golden Leaf Award, and several online accolades.

Even in light of her writing success, that initial love of teaching never wavered for Kathryn. She finished out her teaching career in 2004, retiring from the same school where her career began. These days, she lives in upstate New York with her husband and two children. "My life is very full," she reports, "but very happy. I consider myself fortunate to have been able to pursue and achieve my dreams."

I received a free e-book format of A Burning Passion:The Inheritance from the author for an honest review.
I have to say that firefighters are near and dear to my heart, since I have 2 brothers and a nephew that are volunteer firefighters in our home town. This is one of the books in The Inheritance series (which in itself is unique). I enjoyed this book quite a lot. The 2 main characters, Dan and Lucy, were likable and easy to relate too; and the sub-characters were great too. I practically had the story running through my head as a movie. These are “true to life” characters. They have real problems and react to them, in my opinion, the same as most people would. Dan is unexpectedly left a sizable fortune as an inheritance. His life is finally beginning to settle down, after his wife divorced him a year earlier. He has found happiness, with the hope of creating a family unit again, then the inheritance creates more upheaval, especially when his ex-wife starts making overtures towards him and wanting to get back together. The writing style flows well and I liked the settings within the story. It's a good, well written story.

Lucy Coretta and Dan Collins have been best friends for years however they now have start to look at each other differently. They both have worked together fighting fires so it was inevitable that a spark would ignite between them. Lucy has been in love with Dan for years but had accepted being his friend because when they first met he was married and later it just seemed liked she was permanently friend zoned. Dan as getting tired of fighting his feelings where Lucy was concerned especially when she started dating other men.

Lucy has always been the one person Dan could count on. When his wife left him for someone with more money Lucy was there. She got along great with his kids and always made time for them when they visited. Lucy wanted to make a move on Dan when he divorced but was afraid of being the rebound girl so held back not knowing that he was just as interested in her as she was in him. Then one night changes everything. Dan has never been happier than he is when he and Lucy finally come together. He wants a future with her and wants to make things permanent. Lucy has finally gotten her heart's desire Dan and she can't believe he wants her too.

One letter and chaos ensues. Dan find out that a person he saved has left him an inheritance and its a big life changing amount. Wanting to do right by his family he tells his ex wife about it never imaging the mess in sharing the news with her would cause. His ex wife is miserable with her choice and sees this inheritance as a sign that she shouldn't have left Dan and starts pursuing a reconciliation. Lucy on the other hand just wants Dan money or no money however she sees him being drawn into his ex's web. Dan is torn between wanting to give his kids what they want and being with Lucy. When Lucy tells him she can't take his indecision anymore and takes off Dan sees this as her not being willing to wait for him. That is until he sees he ex for what she really is a gold digger. Will he be able to make things right with Lucy before its too late?

This was a great addition to this amazing series. If you haven't read this book or any other's by Kathryn Shay I recommend you do so now. Great character and storyline you couldn't ask for better in a story. I can't wait for more.

Had potential

I really liked Dan and Lucy. The start of this story was a good one. But I can’t stomach how easily he was led by the nose by his ex wife. Is any man really that stupid and gullible?? That part of the story pissed me off. You can’t be blinded to an ex who is trying everything to get you back now that you have money.

Disappointed! Expected So Much More Depth From a Kathy Shay Novel!

I am a Kathy Shay fan and was so excited to notice that I have been quoted above in 'Praise for Kathryn Shay's firefighter series:' “This collection of short stories had it all: mystery, romance, laughter and tears.” was from my review of "America's Bravest (Hidden Cove Firefighter series Book 4). Which makes it so much more difficult for me to express my feelings on this book, as I'm torn how to review it. I was very disappointed to find that this was just another short story. I was hoping for another fully developed, in-depth story like her previous Hidden Cove books. Even "America's Bravest," which was a collection of short stories had much more development and meat to the book as each story flowed into the next.

Ms. Shay's writing is superb as usual, but it left me wanting. Dan is already divorced for about a year at the start of the book, so we don't get to see what he has gone through, nor the development of his and Lucy's friendship during that time. We also don't get to see how Lucy helped him through those tough times. There was no mystery in this book, there was very little romance, and no laughter or tears, in my opinion. I think the only emotion I felt was frustration with Dan and his wishy-washiness. I guess this book just didn't pull on my heart strings.

I definitely recommend reading the Hidden Cove Firefighter series: "After the Fire," "On the Line," "Nothing More to Lose," etc. There was so much more depth to these stories. This short story was just okay and if you skip it you won't miss anything.

Mixed feelings. H’s ex wife was selfish, manipulative, money hungry person. Both MCs were attracted to each other for a long time and even kissed once when the H was still married. We learn that his wife sensed that something was different. The author wanted us to believe that it wasn’t a factor in why the marriage disintegrated. Maybe it wasn’t mainly factor but still ...
When the ex wife tried to win the H back and when he kissed her once the heroine felt betrayed. Well karma is a bitch. This is often complicated especially when the children want their family reunited. There was some parts of the story about other characters and their group dynamics that I wasn’t interested in because I didn’t read previous books from the series.

Shay works Harold Hopewell 's request into her Hidden Cove series well. Dan is a veteran firefighter divorced from his wife who couldn't stand scrimping anymore. His work partner, Lucy, has been in love with him for years but she has never let him know. When Dan receives notification of the inheritance, he is happy, but it opens a can of worms he doesn't expect. Well done.

Enjoyed this book, the male character had so much to contend with. Lucy was such a good friend. The kids were fun. It was a real good book. Had my heart pumping fast in some scenes were the two characters talked about their relationship. Great narration.

Dan is faced with the truth about his failed marriage after he and Lucy share their feelings toward each other. Will a sudden inheritance ruin ever or will everything be made clear?

Another Great One

I have enjoyed a few of the Hidden Cove firefighters series. But it was interesting it also being part of the Inheritance series also. Because it came up in another book from a different author. I love the working of authors in the same grouping.

A hit in the Hidden Cove series & The Inheritance series

Kathryn Shay has, not surprisingly, written another hit in the Hidden Cove series and has started out the new The Inheritance series with a bang. I loved how she brought the two concepts together into one book. She truly picked the right group to write about and the right fireman to focus on.

Dan is an easy going guy that has been around for years and respected by everyone. Years ago he saved an older man and his godsons children. He wanted to repay Dan at the time, but he felt he was just doing his job. There were several anonymous donations made to Hidden Cove FD and other agencies relates to Dan, but it was all supposition that they were from Mr. Hopewell.

Fan is surprised to learn exactly how much money he has truly come in to. He also is not really affected by it other than as a means of donating a lot of it and now paying for everything for his children as vs his ex-wife's partner doing so.

Sadly, for Dan, his ex-wife left him over a year ago because she was unhappy that they were not rich and she couldn't have the "extras" that having money would provide. She walked out on her marriage and moved herself and her children into the home of a lawyer who worked with her father.

A few months before receiving his inheritance, Dan and his best friend Lucy had been out earlier. After having to much to drink, Lucy admits to him that she has loved him for years. Dan waits until the next morning when they are both sober to admit he has felt the same way. They have an ideal relationship, have a great deal on common, his kids love Lucy, and when the inheritance letter arrives she isn't very affected by it either. Yes, they know it will make life easier, but neither of them are monetarily focused.

When Claire, Dan's ex, finds out about the inheritance she does everything in her power to try and manipulate Dan to come back to her so the family will be whole again. The problem wasn't that she fell out of love with Dan? It was always monetary issues. Lucy is supportive of Dan in regard to Claire, for the most part, but after she finds out about a kiss between them she has had enough...and it brings a lot of realizations to Dan in regard to Lucy and his family. They are cemented after an injury at a fire.

Kathryn Shay has written a wonderful, powerful, and heartwarming novel. She always has such strong characters who are also flawed and loved by many. She picked two perfect main characters for this new series and the continuation of her Hidden Cove series. The supporting characters add so much to the novel. All of them being different perspectives and aspects to the main storyline and make it that much richer in parts and as a whole.

From the start, the author has drawn her readers in and makes putting down the novel a hard choice, even for a slight break.

Kathryn Shay's writing just keep getting better and better. She writes very unique stories that are very realistic, with characters that are all too human, making it easy for readers to relate to both the story and the people she writes about. She has a wonderful way with words that makes things very descriptive without using too much detail. The reader is able to truly see the scenes as they unfold.

If you haven't read the Hidden Cove novels and novellas, definitely pick them up. They are stand alone, but more enjoyable read in order. Definitely pick up book one in "The Inheritance" series (this book). She has started the multi-author 9 month intermittent release off with a truly magnificent book. I look forward to the next one on that series, as well as the next Kathryn Shay novel.

A Burning Passion: The Inheritance, Hidden Cove Firefighters Book Eight is by Kathryn Shay. Unfortunately, it seems to be the last of the series. I am so disappointed that this series is ending; but a new one The Inheritance is beginning. I don’t think it will be as exciting as it may not deal as much with firefighting; but it should be good.
Dan Collins had undergone an unexpected divorce. His wife decided to leave him for a lawyer friend of her Father’s. Prescott could provide her the lifestyle which she had been brought up in. Dan just could not work enough overtime at his job as a fireman to satisfy her. She took the two children to live with Prescott and her. She and Dan had joint custody of the children and she was generous to work with his schedule; but they still were not in his home. Dan worked his way through the divorce with the help of his work and fellow firefighter Lucy Corella, his best friend.
Lucy and Dan were both transferred to Lucky 17, a new station that was opened. There they worked together and transitioned into better friends than ever. When Lucy was hurt on the job and it required she have someone with her overnight, Dan took up that job. That night, something happened that changed their lives completely.
What was this event? What does it mean to Lucy and Clare? It changes Dan’s life completely

I really enjoyed this story by Kathryn Shay! Definitely looking forward to reading more stories in this series.
Dan Collins loved his life, family and job and was extremely surprised when his wife didn't want to be married to him any longer. He couldn't believe that she would walk away because of money, but that is just what she did.He was finally in a place where he was finding his new normal and he and the kids were doing great.
Lucy Coretta was Dan's best friend and she worked with him on the fire department also. She and the kids had kept him going after his marriage fell apart almost a year ago and now they were dating. Things were going great!
Finding out he was supposed to receive an inheritance from someone that he had rescued years ago was definitely a shock, but Dan was just rolling with it up until his ex finds out and decides she wants to get back together.

I was given an ARC for an honest review. All conclusions are mine and mine alone.

This is book 8 in the Hidden Cove Series, I am going to go back and find the rest of the series to read. Dan Collins a firefighter had his life go to pieces when his wife took their children and divorced him for another man who had more money a year ago. Without the help of another firefighter Lucy Corettato to depend on he would not have made it so well. Lucy is hurt in a blast from a fire and they go to Lucy’s so Dan can keep an eye on her, their relationship changes with his time there. What happens when Dan inherits a lot of money and his ex-wife finds out about it ? Dan does not want Claire back but Lucy does not know what to do so she leaves for a vacation with a friend. What happens when Dan is hurt ? Will he get the chance to tell Lucy he loves her? I was gifted a copy for an honest review barwatts@telus.net

I was given this book in exchange for an honest review.
This was a novella and appeared to be a more simple story than some of the Kathryn Shay books I've read. It lacked the development because of the length. The story of fellow fire fighters Dan and Lucy was sweet with some angst thrown in due to the ex-wife. Dan and Lucy had been friends hiding their real feelings for each other. I totally liked that part of the plot. The push and pull of the ex-wife also seemed real life, as well as the kids wanting their family back together. The inheritance part was a little weird for me. It may have put me off some, because as a fire fighter/paramedics wife for 35 years I don't think I've ever heard of anyone getting more than a handshake or a plate of cookies from a grateful patient. It was a fun, short read.

Dan's inheritance eases and complicates his life at the same time. Now that he has the money to support his family and pay for his children's needs and private education, his ex-wife wants to return to him because he has that money. Dan has moved on from his marriage and now has a big dilemma in his life.

I loved the strong characters of firefighters Dan and his partner Lucy. However, I did not like his ex-wife at all due to her greedy and manipulative nature. This was a good study in how conflict between people is not always easy to negotiate. Dan had to find what was important to him with his new love, his ex and his children wanting different things in his life. As always, I enjoyed this author's work tremendously.

Ever wonder what would happen if best friends decided to be honest about their true feelings for each other? Read A Burning Passion! Just as Dan and Lucy, firefighters from the same house and best friends, finally figure out that the belong together and are enjoying getting to know each other in a new way, Dan receives a LARGE inheritance. When his ex-wife finds out, she decides it's time to get back together -using their children against him. She knows he loves their kids and will do just about anything for them. Dan keeps screwing up and Lucy stands by him - until he hurts her too badly - and she runs. When firefighting puts his life in danger, he realizes what must be done. And Lucy decides she will fight for him. Dan FINALLY mans up and tells his ex that he doesn't love her anymore.

This is another book in the Hidden Cove series and I really enjoyed it. The writing style flows nicely and the characters seem like normal people. People I can relate to. Lucy and Dan are firefighters and friends forever. One year before,Dan's wife,Clare dumped him for a wealthier man and his two children are still trying to adjust to their new life.Luce has been in love with Dan forever but always in silence. Finally they realized that both have deeper feelings than friendship but Dan's ex wife has other plans...

Very entertaining read! I highly enjoyed it! I cannot wait to read more about these awesome firefighters!

I loved A Burning Passion. The characters were nicely developed. There were times I wanted to strangle Claire...and Dan. Gemma was such a treat. Wise beyond her years but yet still so innocent. Ms Shay did wonderful in incorporating former characters into the story (loved the cameo by Jack--he'll always be my favorite HC character). If you are a fan of her Hidden Cove series, you won't want to miss this book. Yes it is shorter and has less content than the rest but it was a nice way to revisit old "friends". Now I'm hoping there will be more

I have been a huge fan of Kathryn Shay's writing for years so I was disappointed after reading this new novella. While it rejoins her Hidden Cove series and the passionate firefighters who work there, this quick visit lacks the character development and the emotional connection that I have come to expect from her previous work. The storyline is a good one and could have been much better with a longer length to allow the attention to detail, so in this case I can only give this new book 3.5 stars. I received a free copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

As soon as I heard about this new series, I knew I had to read it. What would you do if something left you a bunch of money? Dan is amazed when it happens to him, but it puts his ex-wife on the prowl. His relationship with fellow firefighter Lucy is brand new and may suffer the consequences. I loved the kids and how strong and no nonsense Lucy is. Dan is a sweet slightly clueless guy who always means well. As an addition to the Hidden Cove Firefighters series it is great. I can't wait to read more in both series. I received a free copy in exchange for an honest review.

Provided ebook free for a review. Dan and Lucy have been friend for a long time. They were even friends before Dan's divorce but never went beyond that. Now that Dan is divorced and he and Lucy work and spend more time together, they become even closer. Dan's wife left him because he didn't make enough money to keep her as she wanted. After he inherits money, she wants him back. Dan has trouble separating the past and present and cause pain to Lucy. he will need to really step up to keep her.

I love the Hidden Cove stories, very true characters that are fireman, that I hold true to my heart. Dan is divorced and starts dating his friend, Lucy. Dan's wife left him because he was not rich enough to provide for her tastes. Dan comes upon a large inheritance from saving a life. Now all of a sudden, Claire wants back in the picture and throws Dan's new found love in a tail spin.

I listened to this book, and could not stop listening. I will admit, I wanted to strangle Claire a few times. So happy that Dan listened to his heart. I highly recommend this book!

New series- great love story

I heard about this series as another author I follow has written a story as well. These are all meant to be novella length stories related to other stories this particular author has written. Ms. Shay is a very good story teller. I enjoyed the relationships between all the characters. Also, knowing people in fire fighting, her technical knowledge is spot on. That makes a difference. I rooted for Dan and Lucy and happy they got their HEA.

I was very intrigued by the premise of this series. How fun to see the common thread woven across a variety of authors. I'm familiar with this author but haven't read any of the firefighter books. I enjoyed reading about characters who seem very real in their situations and reactions. I wss a little frustrated, but i believe most of that is a result of the shorter length and not having enough character development . I look forward to reading the others in the series.

Enjoyed this first book of the Inheritance series. Loved how Dan and Lucy finally admit their love for each other and all the trails they go through to be together. Kathryn did not disappoint her readers in this new adventure of the Hidden Cove Firefighters Series. Enjoyed being reunited with the other members of the team from previous books. Great job Kathryn!
