Mike Horn est un aventurier de l’extrême. Il ne vit que pour relever de nouveaux défis, et repousser encore plus loin les limites de sa résistance. Cette aventure, il l’a vécue aussi comme un véritable voyage vers l’humain. Parce que sur ces terres où la vie ne tient qu’à un fil, la solidarité est exemplaire. Et, comme il le dit lui-même :



« Je crois à la générosité profonde de la nature humaine. Elle est simplement étouffée par la vie sociale. Là où je vais, la mascarade cesse et le meilleur ressort. »

Aventurier de l'extrême, Mike Horn naît en Afrique du Sud, où ses parents étaient enseignants. Le sport est l'activité principale de son enfance : rugby, cricket, athlétisme, tennis et vélo sont, entre autres, les disciplines dans lesquelles il excelle. Diplômé de Science du mouvement humain à l'université de Stellenbosch, il travaille ensuite dans l'entreprise de fruits et légumes de son oncle, à Johannesburg. En vendant une cargaison de choux trois fois le prix du marché, sa vie change : à 24 ans, il gagne beaucoup d'argent et décide de changer de vie. Il ne garde qu'un sac à dos et de quoi se payer un billet d'avion. Son premier contact avec l'aventure a lieu en 1991 : il explore les Andes péruviennes en rafting et en parapente. Plus tard, il devient membre de l'équipe Sector No Limits. Mike Horn descend ainsi le glacier du Mont-Blanc en body-board. Quatre ans plus tard, il bat le record du monde de saut de cascade en hydrospeed, au Costa Rica. En 1997, c'est la première grande expédition : la traversée de l'Amérique du Sud à pied, seul, durant 6 mois, qui s'achève par la descente de l'Amazone à la nage. La voile le passionne également, et Mike Horn, à bord d'un monocoque battra le record du monde de la traversée de l'Atlantique. En 1999, Mike Horn est prêt pour une nouvelle expédition unique : le tour de la Terre le long de l'équateur sans aucun moyen de transport motorisé. En 2002, il se prépare pour un autre tour du Globe, mais cette fois au niveau du Cercle polaire. Victime de gelures aux mains, il lui faudra deux tentatives pour réussir cette expédition. En 2006, il retourne vers le grand froid en ralliant le Pôle Nord et se prépare pour de nouvelles aventures.

O carte, care pe lângă izbânda acestui om, ne prezintă pas cu pas evoluția acestuia, toată experiența și cunoștințele acumulate în acești 2 ani în care a străbătut Cercul Polar de Nord. Oamenii pe care i-a întâlnit și mai ales acei oameni simpli, care prin bunătatea lor l-au adăpostit, l-au hrănit, l-au îndrumat și l-au învățat să supraviețuiască fără sa-i ceara nimic în schimb și aici citez: „viața socială ne face egoiști, dând la iveală tot ce avem mai rău în noi. În locurile spre care mă îndrept, mascaradele „civilizate” iau sfârșit și apare, în toată splendoarea, tot ce omul are mai bun.”

I really liked this account of Horn's journey around the Arctic Circle - even though it was really stressful to read.

I had already heard parts of this story because a few friends of mine had met the adventurer. So if it weren't for their stories and excitement I wouldn't have known about Horn or picked up his book.

The story in a nutshell is basically how Horn leaves Norway going West and tries to get around the Arctic. It's a grueling tale of endurance- physical and psychological. I mean, it's bad enough to read the sections about it being more than 40 below zero where there's equipment failure (even duct tape can shatter at certain temps), but also just thinking about being alone for that long and without sunshine for much of the journey.

It's a fascinating read and didn't make me feel too much like a slacker for not doing things even 1/1000th as adventerous. Pick up the book.

As the title suggests, this story documents the trek above the arctic circle that Mike Horn took 27 months to complete in 2002-2004. In reading this story I appreciated the really strong will to survive that exists in some people. Many times I thought, "yep, I think I'd just give up right there." Every day was a struggle. And also, one gets a little bit of perspective when one thinks "it's cold outside" on a 27 degree day, when he routinely dealt with temperatures hovering around 40 below! But he saw some amazing sights that no one else on earth has ever seen. And he met some amazing people that he otherwise never would have encountered. And he, of course, lived to tell the tale.

I was hoping to get a bit deeper into Mike's mind; to read about what the things are that he thinks about while on these crazy challenges. Does he ponder the reasons for our existence, politics, the future, the purpose of his life etc.? The book has very little of that and is rather almost a diary of the challenge that he undertook, the distances covered in a day, the animals and people he encountered on route and how those encounters impacted the journey. Don't get me wrong, it is interesting to read about his equipment and the harsh conditions he had to overcome. It just gets a bit boring after a while and the book does little to dash up something a bit more meaningful.

I've read some of the best adventurer accounts-- Endeavor, A Wicked and Precarious Situation, et.al--but this account surpasses the sum of them all! Mike Horn is immortal; every few pages is yet another close brush with death. Mike's determination is the epitome of the saying, "never lose sight of your goal"

Mike Horn est vraiment quelqu'un d'incroyable. Il s'agit d'un récit d'aventure et d'exploits physiques mais aussi d'introspection, de belles rencontres, de solitude et de la grandeur de la nature hostile des endroits les plus reculés de la planète.
Je ne pensais pas apprécier autant ma lecture, mais j'ai vraiment passé un bon moment.

Идеята за книгата е чудесна - читателят научава за пътешествие, на което малцина имат смелост да поемат. Като начин на писане авторът не ми допадна избощо - на моменти нещата се обръщаха повече към техническия аспект от пътуването и усещането беше малко като четене на рекламна брошура - на дрехи, екипировка, инструменти, имена на марки и тн., което отне фокуса от самото преживяване. Според мен авторът е наблегнал на твърде много неважни случки и подробности, които за мен бяха безинтересни, стори ми се, че самите истории за различните хора, с които пътешественикът се среща и различните култури , с които се сблъсква, можеха да са разказани в много по-голям детайл, което щеше да направи книгата в пъти по-увлекателна. Такива истории имаше, но според мен авторът на много места бе предпочел да направи индиректна реклама на различни стоки, което до голяма степен за мен отне от чара на разказа. Друг аспект, който не ми хареса, че на места текстът беше все едно да се възхвали пътешественика (несъзнателно или умишлено). Това беше излишно и определено непривлекателно, тъй като подвизи като тези на Майк Хорн говорят сами за себе си и читателят вижда това - нямало е нужда авторът сам да се 'потупва по рамото'. Все пак в книгата има и много интересни моменти - като близките срещи с различни диви животни, различните форми на пътуване, обичаите и традициите на местното население на различните места по кълбото са досег на читателя с един по-различен начин на живот, за който на мен ми беше интересно да науча. Като заключение - разбираемо е, че такъв тип пътуване е тежко физически и психически - героят на книгата знае това - но в разказът си е избрал да наблегне много повече на физическия аспект, и по-малко разбираме каква е борбата в неговия ум с изпитанията, пред които е изправен - смятам че авторът би могъл да се свърже с читателя доста по-добре ако това беше наобратно.

Mike Horn is an incredible source of inspiration for me. I loved reading this book and all his other books as well, recounting his amazing adventures in wild and unexplored regions of our wonderful earth. He brings us along his journeys, shares his discoveries, makes us experience and feel in our mind's eye this wild natural beauty of our planet. He inspires through his intense focus and determination, and utter faith in himself. He also shows how it is possible to become one with nature, to be completely in alignment with it. Nature loves him back for sure, and keeps him out of harm's way (he dodges many close calls). I love this book, and his author!!! ♥

The most incredible and extreme journey book that I have ever read. Surviving in a cold climate where the lowest temperature was -75°C, facing bears and wolves, suffering frostbitten, walking through the Artic winter storms - to name a few terrifying moments on his remarkable expedition to North Pole which took about 2 years (27 months)and covered 12,000 miles. Almost throwing in the towel, though Mike Horn took an enormous risk and succeed in achieving his amazing goal. Unbelievable!!

Again a book I devoured… I just can’t stop reading his exploits ! On the real book, I "corned" almost all the pages ahah (just like latitude 0) and took a lot of notes on the book itself. He is invincible, inspires me so much to go do a trip me too, recently I was thinking to go on bike to Norway (from Belgium to Norway) on the Eurovelo 3, we’ll see!

Майк Хорн е пътешественик от ЮАР. Той си поставя необичайни, граничещи с невъзможното предизвикателства, като обиколката на света по Екватора без моторни превозни средства или самостоятелното немоторизирано прекосяване на Южна Америка. "Арктос" е третата му мащабна експедиция, в която той преминава сам северния полярен кръг при температури, достигащи - 60 С.

Книгата ми беше много интересна с наситеното и драматично ежедневие на пътешественика в такива екстремални условия. Научих нови неща за поведението на човешкия организъм при крайно ниски температури. На места ме дразнеше самонадеяността му, която впрочем всеки път довеждаше до фатални грешки, но не мога да не се възхищавам на упоритостта и волята му да преодолява собствените си граници.

This is a gripping book, written true Mike Horn style. You will be mesmerized by Mike's humor despite his seeming-to-be-impossibe adventurers in the most outthere ice deserts. He writes about his encounters with amazing people (few though) and his driven will to survive in this stretched out adventure through ice and bureaucracy. The DVD is also available from his website and is great entertainment.

J'ai lu ce livre dans le prolongement de celui racontant les expéditions de Scott et d'Admundsen pour la conquête du Pôle Sud. Il est clair que la différence de préparation est flagrante entre les deux époques, le périple de Horn avec son téléphone satellite, sa logistique assurée semble vraiment trop bien préparé pour convaincre. Et pourtant, la partie finale pour traverser toute la Russie a du être une sacré épopée malgré tout.
