It's a lovely day to travel through rural New England. That's what Harriet and Arthur Bloomsbury think, but that comforting feeling is a fiction. Hiding among the stone walls, picturesque barns, and hay bales is a horror they can't imagine. It's deadly, impossible -- maybe even paranormal.
This short story isn’t your average murder mystery, because this time, the threat isn’t quite so clear. Is it the serial killers hunting you? Your own paranoia? Or the very laws of nature? The suspense is free.
This is the second short story, (this one coming in at 40 pages) from S.H. Livernois that I've read. The first one was 'Limbo'. This short story was actually pretty good. I quite enjoyed it. Giving this one 4 stars.
We have an old couple on an adventure. The married couple are retired and the husband has a bucket list of places he would like to travel to while he still can. They are on a road trip. Wife, Harriett "Harry" is the co-pilot and is reading the map. She is concerned that they are lost. Husband, Arthur, is unconcerned and is enjoying the day. He says being lost is also an adventure. That everything will work out in the end. Soon the road they are traveling turns and so does the weather. It's the middle of August and it is starting to rain/snow which is very strange. There car gets stuck and they need to seek shelter. They are conveniently broken down in front of a creepy house. They of course head up to ask the kind strangers for help. What happens next was completely unexpected.
I very much enjoyed the unique take on this story line. I've read or have watched movies (Rocky Horror Picture Show) that show a couple, becoming stranded in a rain storm, seeking shelter and find something strange in the overly helpful strangers house.
This one even though short had a start, middle and end. Endings in short stories for me are the most important. Are the complete? If they are they get higher marks/stars, what have you. This one was great. I was able to download it for free back in 2016, but looking at Amazon it seems to no longer be available. If you can track this one down. It's worth the read.
Wow, I cannot believe this is the first free book I've found in a long time and it was Awesome!! This story gets you thinking from the first page. A mystery, thriller, horror all in one. I really like this Author and for a first time read it won't be my last. kozettekaysmith
Seriously? SERIOUSLY???? You call that an ending? What did the police discover once they had found the car? What happened to Harriet? Was it all a dream? Did she commit any crimes? Come on now, you can do better; its not like it was a bad read, it just has no ending.
There will be no spoilers in this review, but Slip is a fascinating horror story of when one not only gets lost on a road, but also lost in time. Optimistic Arthur and suspicious Harriet get their car stuck in the mud and go to a local farmhouse for help.
The twist in the story I did not see coming. All in all, it’s a well written tale.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book because it was very believable. Even knowing the whole story was fantasy, it had the ability to grab my imagination from the beginning. I could easily put myself into Harry’s role all the way through. My favorite character is the old lady who is her ally. Can’t wait to read more from this author!
Short but real creepy time travel story. Kept me on the edge of my seat. Had a classic 'WTF' ending. I loved it. My first by this author and will not be the last.
Slip by S.H. Livernois is an entertaining short horror story. I gave it four stars because it was scary & kept my interest start to finish. Even though parts of it were telegraphed, it was an enjoyable story.
Harriet & Arthur Bloomsbury were lost. There were more potholes & ruts than road where they were driving in their Cadillac. No houses or humans were in sight. Their car got stuck & the weather turned cold & started sleeting even though it was August. They walked across a barren field to an isolated house for assistance.
"Harriet squeezed her eyes shut & breathed deeply. The strange dread remained. She tried to calm herself. It was the ache in her bones, the strange & gloomy weather, & this imposing gray house in a sea of mud. That was all. An overactive imagination could lead one into all kinds of imaginary fears. The dread melted, her heartbeat slowed."
I received a complimentary kindle copy from Amazon. That did not change my opinion for this review.
A retired couple is finally getting to travel on adventures. But when they take a wrong turn, they end up farther off the path than they could have imagined.
This is a short story of the wrong turn and the terrifying consequences. The is is a common theme in horror. You get off the beaten path and the next thing you know someone thinks you would make a good Sunday dinner. There is usually one person who tries to warn everyone that something seems off but they get ignored. So, this type of story has been done before but there are some twists that makes this one different from all the rest. There is some pretty strong foreshadowing as well. But the suspense still works. Worth a read. I would rate it as 3.5 stars.
S.H. Livernois weaves a pretty scary short story and "Slip" is no exception. From the very beginning I'm thinking...do not go down this road! It's my worst nightmare...being lost in the backwoods somewhere. But Arthur and Harriet head down that road and it's just as I feared. I hope this story gets lots of reads. It's exciting and gruesome! Everyone will love it!
I loved this short story. Action packed and creepy! The old girl fault for her life and did a very good job I must say. Cannibalism and ghosts. It couldn't have been better. I suggest anyone who likes scary stories I recommend reading this book. I am going to look for other books by this author!
Nicely written, but ending was pretty fuzzy. Expected a scarier conclusion. But it was really a good story with an unusual plotline. Thanks for letting me read it on Kindle!
I chose this rating because this book held me right on the edge the whole way through the story. I always wanted more, and I got it all the way to the end! I would highly recommend this book to people who like horror.
This story was good. The plot was interesting and definitely not a typical "scary" story. The author does a surprisingly good job of developing characters in such a short time. I felt sad for Arthur and found myself rooting for Harriet.
This is well written, very creepy and dark but some of the people in the story are based, unfortunately, on real people. Where the author takes you using a very ugly bit of history and some new characters, you will have to see for yourself!
It was interesting little read. more really what I expected. It could have may for an interesting full length novel as there were a lot of things that could have been explored more.
