Oddly enough while I was searching the card catalog (digital catalog? What DO you call it now that it’s no longer on cards) for books on Taliesin, this manga series came up. I’ve never heard of it so I got out the first two.
It opens with Deshwitat and his lover, Lilith, running for their lives from their one-time friend, Kalutika. Deshwitat and Lillith are vampires, and he seems to be a master of the dark powers. Kal is of the light. We don’t know what has caused this rift between friends but Kal kills Lilith and imprisons Deshwitat.

Fastforward over 350 years and a paranormal researcher, Sangho Do and his daughter, Remi, are in Romania to meet a few other professors when they are immediately set upon by Laknes, sort of zombie like monsters. And that’s what the rest of the book is about. It’s one long battle scene.

Meanwhile, a priestess of some sort is on her way to meet the professors but her car broke down. Millenear senses the danger and starts running. By the time she gets there, the Laknes have killed everyone but Do and Remi and they’re trapped. Millenear leaps into action. By this I mean she takes off her monkish robes and she’s wearing a ‘swim suit’ keyholed down to her navel with some buttfloss in the back with a crotch a different color so we can’t miss it. Naturally she has, as a friend termed them, “Hentai Boobs of Doom.” Seriously? She was apologizing to God for using vulgar terms like ‘piece of junk’ and she busts out her best street walker outfit to fight in? (at least someone later comments on her weird-ass clothing choices)

Millenear is sort of the bad ass of the bunch which means little. Mostly she runs around barely doing anything and thinking ‘I’m sorry’ and ‘could this be my end?’ Even Remi, who is a teenaged girl is better equipped and does more butt kicking. And where would we be without the potential for tentacle rape? Do advises the girls to ‘cover all your orifices.’ It takes Millenear a second to figure it out (meanwhile Remi is kicking the crap out of the tentacles aiming for her skirt) then she blushes. Really? She’s fighting in buttfloss and she’s suddenly Shy?

Finally Do gets the idea that they need to concentrate on the one with the most spiritual energy. Millenear does accomplish this only to release Deshwitat from where Kal imprisoned him, inside the Laknes. Unfortunately, he’s too weak after three hundred years to do much and Millenear thinks he’s more dangerous than the Laknes (as if he needs to be. The Laknes are kicking their butts). Do comes up with a plan that will enable Deshwitat to win but only if he agrees to protect the two girls.

Honestly, it’s probably not as bad I just made it sound. I think mostly I’m over my limit on kick ass heroines who always need rescuing and/or ridiculous outfits no woman would ever go into battle wearing. On the other hand, it’s not particularly memorable either. I did get out the second book so I might as well read it too.

This is a very silly comic and you have to be willing to embrace it. There are ridiculous genre conventions being upheld. But the character design and costume design is fun and over the top and I like it

I used to read a ton of manga when I was taking a break from chapter books for awhile. I had read popular ones like Fullmetal Alchemist, Tokyo Ghoul, D-Gray Man and Pandora Hearts.

I hadn't read much mangas for awhile when I got back into reading Chapter books, but I had read few chapters from the mangas online (I guess you calls it's cheating).

When I had read two volumes of Rebirth, I don't care for it. I found the vampire is a douchbag and the female characters are annoying. I hate the one whiny female character was accusing the vampire for murdering her father after her father sacrificed himself to him in order to save them and the girl priest girl looks slutty.

I just had dropped the manga series after the end of volume 2.

It's not juvenile fiction, but the fiction feels a little juvenile. The art is acceptable. The characters are silly. I'm done with the first volume, and I didn't like it enough to continue, so I'm also done with the series.

I thought the story was okay and I did not care for the art and characters. You have to loved something to continue and I can see what the Author was going for it was kind of boring ever though it is action. I am also confuse at that , I just thing know that I am not a fan .

I haven’t read this book since 2003 and honestly it holds up amazingly well. I’m slowly collecting the rest of the books in the series. I’ve owned 1-10 since 2003 and now I’m trying to collect and read them all. I’m very excited to finish this series I started so long ago.

In 1641, Deshwitat a vampire noble of stupid name is defeated by Kalutika, a noble of light. His fiancee Lilith who was trying to broker peace is killed in the battle. in 1998 professor Do, his daughter Remi Do (seriously where are these dumb names coming from?!!! Its hard to keep a straight face!) and a female exorcist Millenear Shephild are attacked by plant monsters. Inside the body of one of these creatures is the dust of Deshwitat - When accidentally mixed with Remi's blood he gets resurrected. Professor Do offers the last of his life's blood if Desh will save the women and protect them. The vampire agrees, but asks Millenear, the exorcist to teach him light magic so he can start his quest of vengeance against Kall.

This is ok, but to me its just a rehash of what's gone before it feels like an inferior hybrid of Bastard!! and Hellsing without the coolness of either.

I wasn't particularly fond of the artwork and I found names incredibly silly - the heroine is Remi Do, which sounds like a musical scale. Deshwitat sounds like an idiot, Lilith seems to be chucked in because this is a vampire story, rather than for any greater meaning and a couple of the professors men: Leon Kennedy and Chris Redfield - seriously!!! Someone's being playing way too much Resident Evil.

Will persevere with the series in the hopes of improvement.

Part of the new wave of manhwa (Korean manga) the 'Rebirth' series catalogues the story of a 17th century vampire named Deshwitat L. Rudbich, who has been released from 300 years of stasis by his enemy, the evil sorcerer Kalutika Maybus.

Volume One covers the battle between the formerly allies, Deshwitat and Kalutika, and culminates with Kalutika murdering Deshwitat's fiancee Lilith before sealing Deshwitat in stasis. During his 'slumber' Deshwitat comes to the realisation that his own Dark magic is insufficient to defeat the Light magic of Kalutika. Some 300 years later, Deshwitat is released from stasis by an inept band of spiritual investigators who are battling a band of demons. When one of the two survivors, an exorcist named Millinear Shephild, uses her Light magic on Deshwitat while fighting the demons he resolves to have her teach him Light magic so he can take his revenge on Kalutika.

As the first in a series, this book shows promise. Briefly, it's about a vampire from the past who is resurrected in the present day. He is looking to seek revenge on his fiancée's murderer and "enlists" the help of an exorcist and a teen-aged girl.

When I finished the book, I was surprised that not much of the story was told... it moved so fast and there was so much action, it took the entire book just to lay the basic groundwork of the story. (So if you like a lot of deep story-telling, this manwha isn't for you.)

Very nice artwork, and the story is interesting and written well.

At first, I had a bit of difficulty reading this, as I'm used to reading Manga, which reads from right to left. This series, which is Manhwa (Korean form of Manga), read from left to right. I'm sure that difficulty also led to my not enjoying this as much as I had hoped I would. It does seem to be a good start to a series and since I had bought the first 5 books, I'm glad.

This was a great series; the artwork differs from my usual books but the style, heavy and masculine, lends itself well to the story which is hearfelt and captivating!
