D.G. Torrens has crafted a happy, sad, and realistic story of Forbidden love between two young people from very different cultures. Jessica and Ajay fall in love but their families, hers Christian and his Hindu, are unable to accept it causing horrible friction among them all. Jessica and Ajay hold hope their families will see past their cultural differences and accept their relationship.

Jessica’s mom goes out of her way to make Ajay’s work life hell. Ajay’s brother sets out to divide Ajay and Jessica.

Jessica suffers a horrible accident of which she has no recollection. Realizing they’ve almost lost their only child, will her parents get past the cultural differences and accept Ajay; thereby, letting Jessica back into their lives? Can they?

In Ajay’s case, what will it take to get his family to come around? Perhaps an old family secret will reveal itself lending to awareness of why some of his family members have made the decisions they have.

This book contains a bit of an emotional rollercoaster ride: love, happiness, disappointment, sadness, hope, healing…

Can Love Conquer All?

“Forbidden” begins with Jessica Hamilton hanging for life onto the side of a cliff. Earlier, she had called her boyfriend, Ajay Sharma, to come to the clifftop. When Ajay arrives, he hears her call for help and reaches for her hand to rescue her, but Jessica slips from his grip and falls down the cliff. Ajay’s mind races. The woman he desperately loves lies motionless in the canyon below. Who would lure Jessica to the cliff?

To find the answer, the story moves back to the time before Jessica and Ajay became a couple. Jessica gets a new job at Lansdale and Down Communications and meets Ajay, an associate director. They feel an immediate attraction to each other, but neither one makes a move until they attend a party birthday. Due to their cultural differences and the colors of their skin, they conceal their relationship from their families. Jessica is white and comes from a strict Christian family. Ajay is black and a Hindu. The story has a Romeo and Juliet feel to it. Both families are against interracial relationships.

From snooping in Jessica’s bedroom, her mother, a powerful business woman, discovers her daughter’s involvement with Ajay and sets out to destroy him.

Ajay and Jessica travel on business to India. Away from their families, their love grows and blossoms, but what they had feared could tear them apart surfaces. Unbeknownst to them, a spy lurks in the shadows. Is their love headed for a tragic ending?

This is a well-executed heart-wrenching love story. The author skillfully brought the characters to life. I felt for the anguish that both Jessica and Ajay faced when they were forced to make hard lifetime decisions. This well-plotted, captivating read is an engaging first book in the Hamilton/Sharma Novel. Highly recommended!

***** A Romeo and Juliet in Modern Times

Talk about an exciting opening! A woman clinging to the side of a cliff? We then go back in time to find out why she has ended up there. The woman is Jessie, who comes from an all white, highly conservative background. She falls for co-worker Ajay, a handsome, dark skinned man originally from India with an equally traditional background. And like in Romeo and Juliet, both families are violently opposed to their union.

But Jessie and Ajay continue on, lost in the first glow of their new love. Then things start to go wrong. Ajay’s job is suddenly in jeopardy and Jessie tries to give homage to Ajay’s mother in the special Indian way, which fails miserably. It seems both mothers and siblings don’t care about the couple’s happiness. They only want what they feel is ‘right.’

The twosome then goes to India for their work and Jessie relishes the beauty and different culture there. Descriptions of New Delhi traffic, architecture, folklore, and history create a whole new world for her—and the reader.

Meanwhile, sinister plots are unfolding, heating up the couple’s tensions. Then we move forward in time to see Jessie back on that cliff, about to fall off. Will she survive? And if so, will their love survive? Oooh. Read it to find out! Definitely recommended.

Real and heart wrenching

This is a realistic tale of two cultures clashing over love. My own white American son married an Indian girl in 2016. Happily, we did not face these problems, though she fully expected to from her family. Even with our full acceptance of their relationship, the culture clash is still challenging. Never think the events in this book are exaggerated or unreal. They are the experience of many.

Emotional

Wonderful expression of racism and bigotry in regards to acceptance of the differences between two of different religion and ethnicity. Outstanding rendering by the skillful authors.

Forbidden by D. G. Torrens is a love story between two people with wide cultural differences. Ones that could tear them apart in ways they never expected.
Jessica never planned to fall in love, but Ajay is special, a man with values who sees his soul mate in her. But Jessica’s strict Christian parents and Ajay’s Hindu family will do anything to keep the pair apart- even if it means committing a crime.

Someone wants Jessica dead and will stop at nothing to ensure it happens. The story begins with her life in jeopardy and then we travel back to the beginning of their relationship. They know there’s no chance the families will ever accept their marriage but can’t resist the lure of the intimacy developing between them.

A trip to India brings the Hindu culture to life for the reader, however the book could have used a good editor.

Overall, a good read.

Loved the story and the concept got a little wordy at times. The background of cultures helped understand but sometimes it was too much

This book grabbed me from page one and kept my emotions running to the very last page.
I had forgotten how crazy it is to be in an mixed race relationship, it must be so difficult to try and keep everybody happy. Ajay and Jessie being in a relationship face all sorts of problems. Follow their journey against all the bigotry in the UK and India. This book will tug at your emotions all the way to the end, God only knows how Dawn managed to write this book. I have read all this authors books and without doubt this book is one of the best. This book is an easy 5 star rating.i can't wait for book 2 in this series.
