Cody Sanderson wasn't looking for a life on the run, but one mistake has cost him his freedom. If he gets caught, it might cost him his life. The man he hooked up with for a night wasn't a man after all, but a beast intent on owning Cody.
But Cody isn't anyone's to keep. He will evade capture and die before he lets himself be caged by a monster. When he's finally caught, he thinks he's about to be taken to the one man he doesn't want to see ever again. Instead, he's offered protection and a solution that will keep him safe.
The only thing is, he'd have to be mated to one of the very things he feared most—a wolf shifter. Cody's not so sure the risk is worth taking.
I am a married mom of four who spends most of the day writing, either on stories or at the blog. I love to write as much as I love to read. I am generally quiet and laid back, choosing to let things slide off me rather than stick and irritate me.
And it's really hard trying to think of descriptives for myself, so I'll just let y'all e-mail me or comment at the blog if there's something specific you'd like to know, and spare you from reading a boring bio:D
Prey and hunter are never easily matched, being natural enemies and not exactly meant to live together. Even though my first assumption when reading the title turned out to be incorrect, I was by no means disappointed in this story. Rather than two shifters, with one a prey animal, ‘Prey Mate’ has a human as the prey, and a wolf shifter as the hunter. And that was not the only surprise – this story is full of unexpected revelations and that made for excellent reading.
Cody is a young human man on the run. He unknowingly got involved with a wolf shifter alpha of the worst kind – possessive, power hungry, and ruthless. Since Cody hates “monsters”, he has no intention of becoming the crazed shifter’s mate. But he also knows he is no match for the men sent to find him, so he is pretty desperate.
Derrick is the man who finally catches up with Cody, only he is not a man but a wolf shifter as well. He has also been sent by the evil alpha, so Cody at first believes he’s done for. But Derrick has his own agenda – and more than one secret – so when he offers to become Cody’s mate for protection, there is more to the deal than meets the eye.
If you like shifter stories with a twist, if two men end up mated who weren’t even looking for a partner sounds like an interesting story, and if you’re looking for a read that is set in an imaginative world, is full of revelations, and has a sweet ending, then you will probably like this novella.

Bailey Bradford has a way with shifters, hit men, and even hotter sex. I found the premise of this short story fascinating with the history of dire wolves. Cody and Derrick were incredible together, and a very enjoyable story.
3.5 stars novella length story of a human on the run from a deranged alpha wolf and the Hunter sent to find him, who'd rather protect him than hand him over. Interesting story with a nice mystical lesbian couple as minor characters

The Story
Cody has been on the run for months and he definitely is tired. After a hook up with a rich man that went awfully wrong, Cody never stopped looking over his shoulder, making sure his freedom would be untouched. It’s not his fault the guy was a crazy mess, he refuses to be affected by it. Cody won’t stop running until he becomes free.
Derrick has just been entrusted with a very important mission from his alpha: to find and bring back a human called Cody Sanderson. Derrick knows that his alpha doesn’t trust him and that he’s got little time to find Cody and save his ass, but he will chase Cody down until the center of the Earth if he has to.
Derrick won’t stop chasing until Cody is free.
What neither of them could anticipate was how high was Cody’s freedom’s price.
The Analysis Just remembering that those were my impressions and opinion as a reader :)
This book is a novella – only 114 pages – but a very well planned one. The story is highly satisficing even with the small holes in the plot, I really liked how dense the characters were and I may enjoy a gay biker when I spot one, haha! I’ve read Prey Mate in an hour and a half yesterday’s afternoon and I ended the book with butterflies in my stomach and lots of “what ifs” on my head. A great 4 stars quick read :)
The narrative is third person with switching points of view between Cody and Derrick and I loved both of them. Cody could be bossy and whiny at times, but I can’t really blame him after so many shit regarding werewolves. Derrick was calmer and more rational, and that’s greatly on his nature’s account. Bradford’s writing style isn’t anything out of this world, but it kept me entertained without bugging me, so it’s okay, haha!
The plot was nice and well connected for the book. Bradford proves my point that you don’t need to drag a story to make it good, developing her characters very well along the way and without abusing of the mate deal to use instalove on Prey Mate :) Even being kind of okay with instalove in shifters cases, I still prefer when authors don’t do it, haha!
The characters were my favorite part of the novella. Derrick even made it to My Bookish Boyfriends list <3 I really like kind and thoughtful males *--* Also, Candice was a kickass surprise and I’m sad we didn’t see more of her in the book, as she was awesome! Maybe another time? Haha! I liked that both Cody and Derrick were very resolute men, confident and relaxed about the important things in life. I admire how Cody was able to stay out of Derrick’s boss’s radar for so long being essentially human and how considerate was Derrick towards Cody’s feelings <3
And there are the sex scenes. They’re three and a half and all were utterly important for the plot in my opinion. Cody and Derrick were all feelings for each other – desire, need, lust, curiosity – and I can see this turning to real love eventually. Bradford knows her business and I felt the need of a cool beverage after finishing Prey Mate, haha!
Again, can we just stop to admire this piece of art that is Prey Mate’s cover? *--* Seriously, I want all my books done with this designer, haha! <3
Overall, if you enjoy werewolves, complex characters, steamy hot sex and quick reads, Prey Mate is a wonderful choice for you!
Thanks for reading my review and thanks again to Bewitching Book Tours for my review copy!
4 Stars, 3 Flames Looking over the shoulder and constantly giving into paranoia and panic has become Cody's life. All for one night with a handsome yet strange man. Or so he thought. Now he was being hunted by a werewolf alpha, Ansel, who wants his blood. Derrick will do anything to protect his species as well as the man he begins to care for.
Wow! It has been quite a while since I had a shifter romance really take hold of me and that I completely read in about an hour. I like to savor my paranormal romances but with this novella I could not stop turning the pages. I liked the fact that it was not love at first sight between Cody and Derrick or even have the total mating urges. Despite them having crazy desire for each other.
After reading Heart's Protector (number 6 in the Dubious Book series) did I realize that I was reading them out of order. That was a great thing about this book that it can be read as a standalone without feeling lost. I might have understood what dire ancestors were but that was all that was confusing; which they explained toward the middle of the book. Novellas, even though they are short, need to have substance and development. Prey Mate had that and so much more!
I enjoyed this novella very much and the more I read of Bailey Bradford the more I enjoy her work! I am going to go back and look for the rest of this series as they are short and sweet and quite captivating!
I was gifted a copy of this novella from the JeepDiva in exchange for an honest review. The opinions and ratings are solely my own.
This is a sweet, action-packed novella with some yummy sexytimes and some fun lesbian mystics thrown in. I really enjoyed the sense of urgency, and the honest feelings expressed by both Derrick and Cody. I liked that Cody wasn’t a clueless kid. He’s been on the run for a while and rightly suspicious of any aid Derrick offers. Derrick is a tough guy with a heart of gold, and his developing feelings for Cody make their union so bittersweet. Cody isn’t ready for Derrick to fight all his battles. He’s also ready to admit he was wrong about many things, but never about accepting Derrick’s help, or love. So, expect some fast and furious bonding, a good deal of biting, and a crazed alpha who will not take no for an answer. There’s a lot of bloodshed in the end and an HEA that involves more than one grand gesture.
From The Book Junkie Reads . . . Prey Mates . . . Surprise, surprise. Prey mates are not always of the same species. You will be quick to learn that in this quickie Gay Shifter Paranormal Romance. I got more than I was expected and could have taken more.
Cody was determined to not be owned by the one thing in the world he feared. But to save his life. He will have to give his life. Give his life to a mate. A mate of the very species he wanted nothing to do with.
Join Cody's fight to stay a single entity and live free. **This ARC was provided via Bewitching Book Tours in exchange for an honest review.**

My Review ~
Prey Mate is a contemporary paranormal novella in the Dubious series.
This story starts out with action and that continues on straight through the end of the story. Cody is trying to hide from Ansel, an insane werewolf who wants to take possession of him. Before they met and hooked up one night Cody didn't even know such creatures really existed and now he's running for his life. Little does he know that he's about to encounter another werewolf determined to find him a mate to 'save' him from Ansel.
Derrick is a Hunter, which is more of a protector of his kind. His family's always been a watch dog of sorts for their kind, making sure no one oversteps and brings their species into the public eye. Stopping the insane from destroying others of their kind, and so on. He leads Ansel to believe that he is working for him but in reality he's working to save Cody from Ansel. He just goes about it the wrong way for Cody since ultimatums and no options generally piss Cody off. It doesn't help that Cody and Derrick are also attracted to each other, even if it's reluctantly.
This is a novella and as such it packs a lot of story into a short package. While it gives a satisfying story there were a few things I'd love to have had more backstory on, particularly the Dire Wolves and Derrick's role as Hunter/Protector. It doesn't really detract from the story it just didn't give me that deeper story I prefer. The sexual tension and finally sexy times between Cody and Derrick are smoking hot. The action is spot on, the bad guy is pure evil, and the conflict is well written.
All in all this was good story that you definitely need to pick up for a quick, sexy read!
Blog Post: http://lovebytesreviews.com/2016/05/2... In Prey Mate Cody Sanderson is a single man who hooks up with the wrong person which inadvertently starts the beginning to the end of his freedom and his life as he knows it. Cody had sex with Ansel one time and now he’s been running for several months because, when they were finished Cody saw Ansel turn into a wolf when he became angry with him! Now, every time Cody gets that itchy tingling feeling on the back of his neck, he knows that somehow Ansel has found him again only this time Derrick catches up to him.
Unbeknownst to either Ansel or Cody Derrick isn’t about to hand Cody over to Ansel. Ansel has gone crazy, the power of being Alpha has gone to his head and turned him mad. Derrick is a protector of all paranormals and he has no intention of handing over Cody to Ansel because he knows that Cody has a direct line back to the original Dire Wolves in his heritage and if Ansel takes him to mate the power in Cody’s blood will make him virtually unstoppable. When Derrick smells Cody he realises that he is his mate but to protect Cody from not only Ansel but all other power-hungry wolves he has chosen several potential mates for Cody. Cody however isn’t having a bar of it! He refuses to mate with anyone until it becomes obvious that Ansel didn’t trust Derrick and sent wolves after not only Cody but to keep an eye in Derrick as well.
Cody can’t help but feel the intense attraction to Derrick but after what happened with Ansel there’s no way he’s going to jump into bed with him! Until Derrick makes it clear to Cody that all he has to do is have sex with him, let Derrick bite him as well as cum in him, they’d be mated and then Derrick would leave him alone. Cody reluctantly agrees and after a spectacular night together along with Cody developing fangs and biting Derrick! When Cody remembers what happened the night before he’s more than a little stunned that he’s developing more and more shifter traits! Cody looks for Derrick to get information but….
Derrick has disappeared and Cody is pissed!
I definitely recommend that you get your copy of Prey Mate to find out what happens next! Bailey Bradford has another winner with book not to mention that the Dubious series are seriously good reads!!
Prey Mate by Bailey Bradford has the story of Cody and Derrick. Cody had no idea just how crazy the world could be, until his stumbles on to a secret that has him on the run. Rides a Harley town to town in hopes he can stay one step ahead of the wolves hunting him. He might be prey, but he is not going to be easy prey. I loved how courageous Cody is. He is thrust into a game of cat and mouse with him being the mouse. His crazy pack leader wants him for himself, but Cody keeps one step ahead. Derrick is the latest Beta sent out to track down Cody. He cannot say no because of his rank in the pack. He wants out of the pack, but his knack for finding things makes him perfect for finding Cody. He just didn't count on wanting Cody for himself once he found him. There is great chemistry between Cody and Derrick. That is something worth exploring more in a later book. The ending to this book is pretty open ended, but I really would love to see a series with these wolves, I want to know what happens next.
Rating 3.5 rounded up. There were two things that accounted for my enjoyment of this book: the unusual shifter mythos bits and the hot, hot sex. The blurb gives you a good idea of the story so I won't summarize and don't want to spoil anything by adding more. There was not time to develop the characters but there was sufficient length to explore their chemistry. The ending is an assumed HEA with an epilogue that really didn't really feel like an epilogue. I had a question or two at the end and especially would have liked to know a little more about Derrick but these were just small things. As an uncomplicated novella the read was very quick and easy. It was the perfect something for in between longer, heavier books or when you are looking for something short and racy for a bedtime read. This was one of the better books by Bailey Bradford and has gotten me wanting to try more by her again.
Cody is on the run from a guy he had a one night stand with. As it turns out the guy was an Alpha and he's fixated on Cody. He'll do anything to get Cody. Cody likes his freedom and doesn't want to be a plaything to a psychopath so is on the run.
Derrick is tasked with the job to find Cody and bring him back for Alpha Ansel. But Derrick has other plans for Cody and it doesn't involve Ansel. But if Ansel finds out before he can set his plan in motion, both Cody and Derrick will be in danger.
It was an interesting short story and easy to read all in one sitting. Cody and Derrick meeting wasn't perfect and I like that they didn't both jump on their attraction. It was nicely paced and was exciting when it came down to it.
3.5 stars rounded up to four especially in comparison to others of its length and genre. Its short length makes it harder to "do it all". Nice shifter story. Not great, but better than average especially for those who enjoy m/m shifter stories. The characters were drawn well and the chemistry hot. I loved Candace. I would have like to have seen the Mom's reaction at the end of the book, but it wasn't necessary. This was an easy quick read with no major flaws but not exceptional either.
This story actually featured 2 very rare characters: Cody who could say no and "will evade capture and die before he lets himself be caged by a monster" and Derrick who was gentleman enough to follow the adage "If you love somebody, let them go, for if they return, they were always yours. If they don't, they never were." I just couldn't understand why Derrick had to mate Cody before he killed the bad guy.
I liked it... but I didn't like the way it ends. There are still unanswered questions. Like the hows of their mating. How.. How....... HOW...
And going from unexpected...First impression, especially with some solo fun times is that Cody is all down with receiving. Later on, that turns out to not quite be true..
Short story, but very rich. I totally love it, and by the time I finish I was grining like a happy person. Zero angst whatsoever, everything was solve so smoothly, and that make the book so much better for me.
A good little story, though I was surprised by the change in Cody. He starts off seeming so skittish and scared and then becomes so strong and stubborn. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed the change, it was just surprising and lead the story in unexpected directions.
