Leo Strauss se penche sur la signification du nihilisme allemand, qu'il considère comme la base culturelle du national-socialisme. C'est la seule fois où il parle du nazisme, lui qui en a connu les premiers signes en tant qu'Allemand et en tant que juif. Son analyse est simple et lumineuse. Il démontre que loin d'être un phénomène lié à la folie d'un chef capable de sidérer un peuple entier, le nazisme est enraciné dans l'histoire de l'Allemagne moderne et dans l'histoire de la modernité. Sa critique s'inscrit dans la tradition philosophique classique et dans la tradition biblique, l'une et l'autre radicalement opposées au nihilisme contemporain. About the author

Leo Strauss was a 20th century German-American scholar of political philosophy. Born in Germany to Jewish parents, Strauss later emigrated from Germany to the United States. He spent much of his career as a professor of political science at the University of Chicago, where he taught several generations of students and published fifteen books.
Trained in the neo-Kantian tradition with Ernst Cassirer and immersed in the work of the phenomenologists Edmund Husserl and Martin Heidegger, Strauss authored books on Baruch Spinoza and Thomas Hobbes, and articles on Maimonides and Al-Farabi. In the late 1930s, his research focused on the texts of Plato and Aristotle, retracing their interpretation through medieval Islamic and Jewish philosophy, and encouraging the application of those ideas to contemporary political theory.

Ik ben in een "boeken over de relatie tussen politiek en ingesteldheid"-vibe de laatste tijd. Recent hadden we optimisme, zonder hoop dan nog wel. Hier dus nihilisme (over de relatie daarvan met het nazisme die ook hier werd aangehaald heb ik nog een lijvig werk van Georg Lukács liggen, dat ik samen met dit boek heb gekocht in een fantastische tweedehandsboekhandel in Brussel, inclusief oude krantenartikels over Lukács' dood van de vorige eigenaar tussen het boek gestopt, moet ik eigenlijk dringend lezen).

Nu denk ik dat ik als laatste voor (kapitalistisch) realisme zal gaan. Misschien doen we daarna nog "onversneden gewelddadig idealisme" aan de hand van "How to Blow Up a Pipeline" van Andreas Malm hierna, dat ligt hier ook nog weg te kwijnen op mijn bureau, we zien wel.
