Children of Avalon

Rate this book
In an alternate realm a darkness is stirring.

On Earth a four year old Kyah was found in an abandoned house with no memory of who she was or how she got there.

But all that changes twenty-one years later when she is shoved through a shimmering door into a realm of fantasy that she thought only existed as stories. Handed a mission by ancient powers, she must figure out how to defeat those intent on bringing the darkness into the light.

In the realm of Avalon, Kyah finds strange and legendary new friends along with new found powers. These powers will help her and her new friends fight the darkness and save a town and its children.

If she survives the encounter with the darkness she will be set on another path to find out who and what she is.

This action-packed fantasy blurs the lines with science fiction twisting legendary heroes and mythical stories into a whole new multiverse.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and it will now be passed around the teens in the house. The action starts from the kick off as you are thrown into Kyah's world as her world is turned upside down by strange creatures and revelations: nothing is as it once seemed, least of all herself.

S.E Wright has blended fantasy, myth, and action and given us a sassy heroine that we can cheer for and sympathise with - and this is just the first book in the series! That said, the book does have a 'proper' ending while leaving things in place for book two. (I personally hate cliffhangers)
Some other reviewers have mentioned spelling/typing errors but I didn't notice any more than I've found in books from big name publishers and they didn't detract from my reading enjoyment. The plot flowed well and the characters were well developed but still have ample room to grow as the series moves on.

I received a copy of this book from Reading Deals in exchange for a review and I am so glad that I did.

Adventures, prepare

Our characters begin to assemble to face unimaginable tasks and adventures. The idea of a Traveler, capable of doing all sorts of magic, crossing into different realms, intrigues me...and I like Kyla.

An orphan, a custodian, a magical being that can transport to thousands of different worlds?

Kyah has no idea who she is, she was left in an abandoned house as a child and can't remember anything about her past except that she sometimes dreams of a man and a child that appears to be a younger version of her. So, when she is thrust into another world, one where fairies, gods and King Arthur are all real, she has no idea what to do. And when she discovers she is a Traveller, a being that can influence and change the worlds (all of them), she's overwhelmed. But now, she must help Arthur defeat his sister once and for all, and learn a few things along the way.

I loved the character descriptions in this novel. They were beautiful and awe inspiring. Kyah is extremely real and Wright did a great job of keeping her true to herself throughout the story. There is nothing worse than a character who just randomly changes mid-way through a novel simply because it'll fit the author's purpose better.

Pan, an Ancient Power, Merlin, the famed wizard, and even a fairy princess are Kyah's companion to help the rude jerk that is King Arthur, who is also tasked with training her. As Kyah learns more about herself and begins to realize there is more to the universe than she may ever know, she begins to feel a place of belonging, something she never had as as she was carted off from foster home to foster home.

Another wonderful aspect of this novel is all the great hints dropped along the way. From the hunters, to the gypsies, to the Lady of the Lake. Wright has given us the makings of a fantastic series and I can't wait to explore it some more.

Medieval fantasy is one of my favorite genres to read and this book does not disappoint. I’d been in a reading slump until I picked up this book. It was a real page-turner and I found it hard to put down. The story was intriguing and even though it includes characters from the Arthurian legend, I found it to be original. The author created a world in which the fantastical creatures of myth and legend exist in different dimensions/realms. Kyah, the main character, has the ability to travel through these realms and meet people only found in fairytales. The writing was well done and the descriptions were appropriate for the scenes. Kyah was a believable character and several of her inner thoughts about her situation made me literally laugh out loud. I enjoyed reading this book and hope to read more from this author.

New twist to Arthurian legends, after his battle with Mordred

Good quality book, shorter than most novels as I usually read 390-1,200+ page books.
This is a nice New twist to the Arthurian Romances of the 11th-12th c. & still all 3 are much shorter but then this is not a lame brained rehash of Le Morte de Arthur either. And the author may still put out further material. Not sure as I've only read this one & don't know if book 03 finishes the series or not.
Also a bit of a twist on the popular Japanese LN's where the hero is taken to an alternate universe, so if these books were all just a bit closer to 300 pages each they'd be great.
LN artwork not withstanding, I myself usually only take a quick glance at the art of them anyways & rather let my own imagination fill my head with the look of each character.

Camelot Meets Neverland!

This book was a delightful blend of so many diverse aspects that I was quite entranced by it. Featuring characters that have been talked about through generations of storytelling, I liked reading about the heroine, who went on from believing she was a nobody, to being someone who did indeed have a great purpose. Legends, gypsies, ogres and druids all pass through this book as a healthy blend of mystical figures, good and bad. But lying underneath the adventure is a sense of finding one's place in the world, and finding friends and family.

I would regard this story as being suitable for anyone of any age, right down to children of 10+.

I was provided with a complimentary copy of this book so I could give an honest review.

Title/Cover: The title is what drew me in for this book. We have all heard of Avalon and King Arthur. The cover is pretty though and is an accurate representation of the book.

Characters: I loved Kyah. She is a tough heroine but she still has doubts about her abilities. Merlin & Pan are probably my favorite characters. I love the way they are portrayed in the book.

Plot: Kyah discovers that she is a Traveller and is transported to another realm. Remember all those stories of Arthur and the Gods? Well they exist in these other realms. Kyah is given a mission and along with Arthur, they attempt to stop Morgana.

Overall: I loved this book! It is non-stop action and all the characters are familiar. I can't wait to read book 2.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I would have given it 5 stars but there were parts in it that I thought were more meh than others. I felt like there was a lot of different types of genres being intertwined which kept me hooked and the pacing did well with how it was written. I do wish that the book would have been a bit longer and that they author would have really gotten more in depth with the scenery and characters.

This was a fun urban fantasy that included a few nods to old fairytale and legends such a Peter Pan and King Arthur. The time travel could have been done a little better and it felt like there wasn't ever really one big, momentous fight, but rather the characters where in the midst of battles constantly throughout the book. Overall it was good, but I think it could have been executed a little more cleanly.

Modern orphan is really from another realm. Good fun!

I enjoyed this alternative Arthurian story, starting from Arthur’s seeming demise but in another realm where the outcome of Morgaine succeeding his most unpleasant. I felt the story was more of an outline and a bit rushed but managed to pick up pace. I expect the next book to have more detail.
However, this tangent in a well known folk tale is on an interesting angle and promises a good series to follow.

If you like fantasy and tales of king Aurthor this delightful twist is a must read, like a good author Wright brings this tale to a end and sets up the parameters for the next book in the series so that you want to continue with Kyrah on her next adventure. No major cliff hangers that leave you frustrated because the tale is divided into small chapters over several books not really telling a full tale in any one book, hate those types of books.

Nice take on a familiar story

I appreciated the fact that this story isn't riddled with constant catastrophes and failure. It is a refreshing break. I read for enjoyment, and Children of Avalon supplies just that.

When I first started reading, I was annoyed by the mild cursing sprinkled in. I almost stopped reading. I feel that vulgarity shows a lack in a character. I am glad I finished it.

I was super excited to read this when I got it, but it didn't quite live up to my expectations. It was ok and interesting and I'm sure future books will be better as the author is able to develop the characters and story more.

Honestly, I'm not huge about grammar but I guess my expectations are higher with print books. There are some pretty awful grammar mistakes.

It is a good book with a great concept but it would have been a lot better if the main character Kyah was 16 and not in her twenties considering she acts and talks like a teenager throughout most of the book. So if you're going to read it, just imagine her being 16 from the start. Other than that I would recommend it to people looking for a light fantasy read.

I wish we could give half stars - so really my rating is 3.5 ⭐.

The books was delightful. A little bit predictable but an enjoyable read.
I really enjoyed how the author brought to life... Everything. All the deities & characters we have heard through the myths and legends have been a favourite of mine, so I'm glad I was able to read about them again in a new light.

an immature writer with little exposition. Things just miraculously happen to the character. She’s given a bow and she can instantly use it. She’s from this world but within a few pages she is in an Arthurian fantasy world. She has questions, well she has a personal fairy to answer them. Couldn’t get past the first chapter.

I liked the storyline and the way the story progressed. I also liked how the backstory was woven into current action. I would have enjoyed a little more vivid description of setting. Overall, good, fun read.

Amazing

To take one of our best known works of fiction and turn it around so it seems as if you know the characters personally is an amazing gift. I would recommend this story young and old.

I enjoyed this book thoroughly - it was a pure indulgence of childhood "let's pretend" brought into adult context, with elements of so many favourite lore and legends. Looking forward to reading the next in the series!

it had an interesting story plot, but it seems a bit odd that the main character could easily adapt to a whole new realm, and not even missing earth life. but as first book, it carried a curiosity on what would happen next.

Couldn't be bothered finishing it. Sorry.
Writing wasn't great, story wasn't great, lots of 'as you know Bob'.
Not impressed.

YMMV

It certainly wasn't awful. That would have been 1 star. But it wasn't good enough to make me want to finish it, so that's 2 stars.

overall very good

I enjoyed the story although some pieces needed work. Having your source of energy starved makes little sense. I dislike having powers manifest without any work. The world building needs refinement

interesting twist

This book was quick to get into. I enjoyed the twist to some old tales. Even though the chosen main tale told in this book is one of my least favorite. The author added enough flair to make it an enjoyable read.

Another book that needs an editor for silly spelling mistakes. Could have been a four star if not for multiple editorial issues.
