HE SURVIVED THE SCOURGE. HE ESCAPED THE CARTEL. NOW HE FACES THE WALL. In the chaos of a global plague, evil took hold. Governments fell, the good became servants, and the Cartel rose to power. A wall was built to contain the wasteland and keep the evil at bay. Now an organized resistance wants change. They're willing to fight for it and they've asked Marcus Battle to help. The last thing Battle wants is another war. But if that's what it takes to gain freedom and safe passage to the other side of the wall, he'll take aim and fire.
This is a 22 hour listen about a post-apocalyptic world. A flea born illness wipes out over two-thirds of the world population. There is no cure, but there is natural immunity. This review references Books 1 - Home, 2 - Canyon, and 3- Wall.
Plot. Marcus Battle, a PTSD victim, returns to Texas and loses his son and wife to the plague; he speaks to them and hears them speak to him. Marcus also lives as a hermit on his land, defending it with shoot-first, so you don't need to ask questions. After months of solitude, Marcus rescues a woman being chased by a cult of marauders. The marauders have her son. They successfully burn Marcus's house down. Under a facade of revenge, Marcus and the woman set out to rescue her son and rid Texas of these thugs. The story has a considerable slice of flashbacks to Marcus' time in service - when he nearly dies to rescue his badly injured friend. Will Marcus conquer his own demons, rescue the boy of a stranger? Stay alive?
Liked. Good character development, easy to visualize action, well-organized plot over three novels. No sex, no explicit language. Decent narration and production.
Not so hot. There are some holes in an apocalyptic world, in my opinion. No mention of shortages of essentials like gasoline, medicine, etc., all that would surely be horrific.
There is more to the story - and, I'm sure, in sequels to come. Too much left to happen!
Written by By Tom Abrahams, narrated by Kevin Pierce in unabridged audiobook format, released in March 2016-19 by Piton Press LLC.
Book 3 in the series, another end of the world book. They are like the westerns I read when I was a kid, fast, easy, fairly mindless but very entertaining (kick-ass, ex-soldier/cop/special forces/super-duper tough guy with dead women/wives and lots of dead bad guys in his past and many more to come in the future). This one had lots of all of that. I enjoyed the momentum of the story but the development (or lack thereof) of the main character's emotional life seemed to fluctuate from book to book and he seemed stuck after awhile and that disappointed me for some reason. It's hard to rate these kind of books - I could rate it 2 stars or 4 stars. If I look at these titles (I read 4 of these in this series) in a few months and can't remember how I felt about them, I will lower my star rating). At least it wasn't another zombie apocalypse. I've read a bunch of those the last few years and they start to all run together in my mind.
Present meets pass, dead and new birth of the books this was the saddest with death of many of the characters we got to know from book one and book two but we learn new ones some who survive and others dies to start a new future and story but the plans to go the to the other side of the wall and see what was there and start a new life but instead go back to Marcus Battles home where his first wife and son had died from from the virus and start a new life and build a new life with Lola,Sawyer and Penny. You meet Lola son Sawyer and Penny who was a baby when they was ask to take care of her if anything happen to Penny's mother named Annie who died trying to save another women in a flooded river. You meet the Generals who run the Cartel and their deaths and then the death of many of the soldiers of the Cartel. Then you meet the Dwellers a group who wants to make war on the Cartel and had many members who had go into the cities the Cartel ran and they had plan one day to revolt and destroy the Cartel in pretense to make things better but in fact they wanted to take over and be no better maybe worst than the Cartel but instead of four Generals the leader of the Dwellers wanted to be a queen and do anything even kill her own people and Marcus, Lola and Sawyer to get what she wants. Marcus,Lola and Sawyer are taken in to believing the Dwellers leader lies and helps her destroy the Cartel and as reward an attempt to murder Marcus on his way to the wall to go thru with his new family was made. Afterward he decided he just go back to were his home had been with Sylvia and his son before they died. After arriving Lola goes to Sylvia and the sons grave and sits and speaks to the graves to introduce herself and ask for their blessing in the relation with Marcus. To be continue
Major Marcus Battle, U.S. Army, retired, joined the Dwellers and fought the Cartel
Battle, Lola and her son Wesson fought against General Roof and the Cartel. Battle knew now that General Roof was the same Sgt First Class Rufus Buck whose mangled body he had carried to safety in Syria. Not that it helped any. Roof recognized a capable opponent and feared him. He killed what he feared, but he was right about Battle - he was capable and he was going to kill Rufus, first chance he got.
Excellent characters and good writing of an amazing storyline make this a great read. You can't go wrong with this series! Give it a read, I recommend you'll love it like I did.
A great easy reading follow-on to the "Canyon." Set in a dystopian not too distant future, our morally gray characters fight for survival against the Cartel to help in an uprising with a group of people called the Dwellers stationed at Palo Duro Canyon North Texas. Marcus Battle finds a new family with Lola and her teenage son. I really liked how the author gave Marcus a second chance at this after the loss of his wife and own son from the global viral outbreak that took them from him several years earlier. - Great fast paced action that kept me wanting more. Looking forward to reading #4 "Rising.
I’m leaving the same review for books 1-3 as I read them as a series.
I know how can an audiobook be a page turner. Well it’s one of those things where your wife rolls over and says so you’re gonna stop listening to that book or what?
I binged the first three books pretty much nonstop and bought the next two sets in the series and I’m all geared up with things to do for a good listen. Maybe I’ll even charge my AirPods but my wife seems interested so maybe not. It’s got that bit of suspense and bit of adventure add in some danger and sadness and top it off with maybe some not so sappy love.
The dwellers in the Canyon were planning on fighting the Cartel and taking over all of their land and enterprises. General Ruff ends up being the man Buck tat Battle saved in stria. There is a lot of action in several places other than the Canyon. The Dwellers had infiltrated the Cartel in all the large cities in Texas.. Even though the book is named Wall, you really don’t find out much about it to the end, so you need to read this trilogy to find out everything for yourself. But there are more books so I will see if I can get 4, 5 & 6.
I like the concept of this series a lot, but three books in and I've still haven't had any strong emotions either way. I enjoy them casually, but by the same token there's nothing here that makes me want to rush out and buy the next one. At least this one didn't end in a cliffhanger, but it still felt cheap - I can't say anything else without spoiling anything, but it left a lot to be desired.
I'll try Book 4 and hope for the best, but if this is all the Traveler series is going to be, I'll probably try my luck with something new.
Returned this book to Audible for a refund when the main character reminisced fondly about a faded MAGA(t) shirt (in book 1). Nope! I'm not supporting that crap. This was a 3 book set, so all 3 books were returned for a refund. Book was only OK to that point in the story anyway, so nothing lost, except to the author.
Exciting conclusion to a great post-apocalyptic series. Although a bit more blood-guts-murder-and-mayhem than I would normally read, Abrahams creates complex characters that are consistently excellent and kept me turning pages.
This entire series is fantastic. I love dystopian adventure and this does not disappoint. Battle is tough but as lovable as a grizzled old grampa. Story is engaging and characters fleshed out masterfully. This review is in retrospect as I've finished the entire series and still would read again.
Not bad, but not as good as the first 2 books in my opinion. The author also has a tendency to tell 2 stories and while I understand that’s his style, I always seem to find myself more interested with one story more than the other. I rated the first 2 books a 4 but I have to give this one a 3.5.
A post apocalyptic story with exciting situations and interesting characters. There is plenty action paced adventure. Battle helps to defeat the cartel but all is not as it seems. Betrayal is always just around the next corner.
Third part of the trilogy and Marcus Battle finds himself with the Dwellers, just as the Cartel is ready to attack. In return for passage over the wall, Battle agrees to help, but are the Dwellers any better than the Cartel?? Good book that finally takes Battle full circle and home.
Book 3, Wall, is well-written with characters I have come to care for (or dislike immensely) and I throughly enjoyed it. I am looking forward to reading book 4 in this series.
What an awesome read! The pain and trials Marcus Battle habe gone through. I can't wait to continue on with this series. I suggest for anyone who loves apocolyptic stuff like I do.
