The story fizzled for me. Susan should have gotten her comeuppance but that didn't happen. Everyone is blaming the matriarch of the family for the issues they're having now. We can't judge people without reviewing our own demons. Second book not as good as the first.
4.5 I thought this was a good conclusion to the series. This family definitely had it's share of secrets. Storyline revealed interesting facts about the characters & their attempts to keep their secrets hidden & their marriages intact. Good read
Susan did not suffer at all in my opinion. She has committed murder- twice, wrecked havoc on a lot of lives and still came out on top- high profile career and loving family. This ending for this character does not sit well with me! Sleeping with her oldest enemy's son would have been a deliciously cold piece is revenge Elizabeth earned from Susan and I hate she had a last minute change of heart. I'm glad Craig got himself together and the Durham brothers were able to successfully work past the ghosts of the past to become better men for the future.
The loss of stars was for the grammatical errors, inconsistent plot line with some characters and the consistent misuse of "Jerome" when the author meant "Junior".
After reading Book 1, I was disappointed. No one seemed to pay for their crimes. There were DEAD people! Everything wrapped up really neatly at the end as well. With all the "sins," it just seemed that there would be less harmony at the end.
I was hoping the 2nd book would delve more deeply into the characters introduced in the 1st book. I think I would have preferred that each of the books to be a little longer to flesh-out people and story lines a bit more.
Still, as a book club pick, the combined books give quite a few topics for discussion.
This book is the second book in a series of books describing the trials and tribulations of the Durham family. The family matriarch, Hattie was the main character in the first book and she committed a number of unseemly and sinful things. She supposedly shoved a potential lover off a tower to his death, killed her husband, committed adultery with another man (Raymond Peace) and had a son from that act (Jerome). She also tried to poison the man's wife to get her out of the way. However, his wife was pregnant and instead of the wife dying, the unborn baby died. Therefore Hattie brought a multitude of sins down on her family.
In this book Jerome is running for mayor and doing quite well. All of a sudden, Jerome becomes debilitatingly ill and has to withdraw from the race. His wife nearly gets involved with an adulterous affair because Jerome can't take care of his marital duties. Jerome's wife, Susan decides to run for mayor after Jerome decided to step down. She was able to overcome a potential blackmail attempt and separation from Jerome and at the end of the book, she appears in good shape to possibly be elected mayor.
I enjoyed both books and I recommend that you read them together. WLM of SC
Yes, oh yes I loved this book, and mainly because I wanted to see what was going on with this family after the first book… I am upset that there was a mix up with Jerome and Junior’s name on one page, and when Junior and Susan was talking there was a mix up with the author saying “he” speaking of Susan and “she” speaking of Junior… But nevertheless, I got to see what would be of this family… There are a lot of secrets they hold from each other, but I guess as they get old (like Hattie) things will finally come out… 😵💫🤐😬🫣
This book was crazy as hell! I mean who writes a book condoning the murder of ones mother? Even in the craziest of times I can't imagine three siblings and their spouses all knowing a sister in law killed their mother just to keep her secret that she killed someone else. Everybody is just like, ok she killed her, let's keep living??!! I wish I never read this craziness!
I really enjoyed reading book 2 which continued with MaDear's family story. It was a page-turner seeking to unfold all the hidden secrets that caused division and finally brought them back together because, in the end, God will be the judge, and forgiveness of sin is Jesus' gift to everyone if they repent and ask for His forgiveness. Very well-written stories books 1&2.
Secrets and lies -- but no depth of character nor complex emotional examinations of how these people came to be who they are or how they reconcile ethical, legal or moral decisions. Everything seemed to move along at a surface level. Books could have used sharper editing as there were a number of mistakes spotted and transitions made in the storyline were someimts abrupt and out of place.
Some truths came to light and others are still hidden. Susan was over the top. She was so selfish in this book. I think she needs to learn a life lesson on the next book if it is one. All she thought about was herself. The Durham's are proving they can weather the storm.
This story continues where the first book ends and the drama continues! A good read for a lazy Saturday afternoon or entertaining when you have a daily commute. Wasn't able to put it down until the end!
This book has so much love and family support. Even though I it would end in an different way. This book is very well written; which I love. I wish Miss Hattie could have lived at least to tell her own stories!
I enjoyed reading Unthinkable Sins 2: The Family. It reveals the horrible sins of Hattie Durham. After her death things began to mysteriously unfold and her son's are struggling to deal with their mother's past/secrets. They will discover things that will change the family forever.
On this journey called life, we have many twists and turns. As we walk through the way we handle situations carve out personalty. Decisions and reactions.LIFE.
Each of the secrets, lies, and deception exposed in book 1 came full circle to be resolved in book 2. Ms. Quarles-Sanders does a fantastic job spinning the tale of a family coming to grips with the sins of their past and working through those sins. Great job!
I truly loved reading this book. We never know what struggles the older generation went through to give us what we have now. This book depicts things our own families have kept hidden.
I didn't like how Hattie Durham came up because of her darker skin . The choices she made when a man paid her attention. The power Susan held throughout this book. But in the end the truth did come out and life went on.
I wanted to enjoy this book more..but I just couldn't. There were too many open ended questions. What happened between Chancelly's Sister and Her son? What else was going on with Susan? The book felt like a huge build up to Empty.
This book is Life-changing. It covers everything. The lessons in this book can help people to have hope where there was none. It can also possibly prevent some mistakes. Some scenes were very aggressive to say the least, so hold on.
The story has some twists you would expect but also some which you don't. Interesting characters as well. The storyline keeps you wanting to read more.
