Long Haul

Rate this book
He’d only ever taken the short run…

Ryker Bacca had seen plenty of lot lizards at the truck stops along his route, but he preferred the anonymity of the restroom glory hole. In and done with each man getting what he needed. But this time was different. Not only did the guy on the other side have a mouth made of pure magic, but he managed to make Ryker break his number one rule: never get involved.

Once he’s in, Ryker can’t seem to say no to the blond-haired, blue-eyed cutie Jody Wilson. It isn’t long before Ryker’s breaking all his rules and finding a connection with the one person in the world who seems to understand him. Irresistible temptation lures him deeper, but the last thing Ryker expected was to find a man worth the long haul.

Holy marshmallow! 😱 And literal and figurative marshmallows! 😂 What the hell did I just read? That was F*king fantastic! 😁 Really, I really didn’t expect to be that enamored with this novel but I am. 😱 I’m in love with both MCs and their story. 😍 This was one of the best contemporary romances I’ve ever read. 👏 Frankly, I’m not a big fan of contemporary as I prefer sci-fi, fantasy or very quirky reads. But this, this I love it. 💙 Even the very first paragraph of this book enraptured me completely. 😉

Ryker, a truck driver, always on the road, contented with his life and what he has. Because of his unconventional lifestyle, the relationships never worked for him and he never thought it will. All he wants to do was just to get laid during truck stops and go on with his life. Another reason of being afraid to commitment, he might look mean and tough but he had a terrible childhood. Abandoned by his father and ignored by his mom, he ran away from home when he was just a teen and never looked back. He’s the only person in his life and he believed it will continue to be that way .. until he met Jody, the owner of the magic mouth. 😉

Jody, grew up really shittily. Born from a family of meth-addicted parents and a homophobic abusive brother, he has thought his life was worthless piece of shit. And with their parents in Jail, he has nowhere to go but to stay with his brother. He knew the day would come when his brother caught him sucking off another man. And when it finally came, it didn’t go well. Being battered up and kicked to death, he didn’t hope anyone would come to his rescue. He’s not a damsel in distress (well, at least he ain’t a gal .. 😂) and there won’t be a prince charming for him. But then came Ryker, the mountain man whom he was sucking his cock just a moment before he’s being kicked by his brother. After being abandoned by his only relative, his brother, he couldn’t believe his luck when Ryker offered him a ride before he could find a place of his own to settle down.

Ryker’s not a saint and he couldn’t say that his help to Jody is purely selfless. 😁 He wants more of that magic mouth but even more than that, he genuinely wanted to help that helpless battered kid as there was no one who’d help him when he was abandoned. And he couldn’t conceal his astonishment when he found out that owner of magic mouth is a freaking 😂👏 . Between the mental battle of wanting to keep the boy by his side forever and wanting to have him a better life than always being on the road, things get more complicated when Jody demanded to keep the abandoned puppy that they found on a highway stop. Jody really didn’t wanna go to another place and be on his own. He’s not a kid anymore and he knows what he wants and that is to be with Ryker. 😍 But how does he convince Ryker that being with him is all he wanted and he loves being on the road with this kind and sexy man. 😌 Will it be a long haul or a short run? 😉

I love how Bruce Rose was able to turn your most ordinary and mundane characters into something magical and fantastic. 👏 I mean Ryker and Jody are not your typical romance novel protagonists. ☺️ They are neither billionaires or ethereally beautiful. One’s an ordinary but kind and loving truck driver and one is a desperate, helpless, homeless kid. Both have similar shitty childhood although they came from different neighborhoods and both are afraid to love and lose themselves in each other. And the storyline was realistic, loving and beautiful. 😍 And to top that, you add a dog? A freaking doggggg!!! 😱 As a canine lover and a proud doggy mommy myself, (yup, this is called self-advert .. 😂) I’m a sucker for anything dog related. (Yea .. we all know that .. 🙄😜) And how adorable that Marshmallow is! I love how she helped Ryker to realize that sometimes you couldn’t and shouldn’t be afraid of the loving and trusting someone as you’d miss the best moment and memories of your life for the fear of losing them in the future. 😌 Sometimes, “love is worth is .. and the risks are worth it”. *happy sigh* 😌 And the smut? Oh, Bruce, you are one hell of a kinky, smutty bloke. 😂👏 I loveeeee the smuttttttt! So freaking hot and erotic! 💚 And the deflowering of Jody was magnificent. 👏😜 In case you still don’t know after reading my many reviews, I have a massive virgin fetish. 😂 And since I’m also nerdy, that comic book role-playing scene (my fellow readers and followers: You gotta read that scene. That role play was fucking glorious! 😍👏) pushed all the right buttons for me. And the ending couldn’t be better. 😱 I’d love to read a sequel (and remember Bruce Rose, this is a demand and not a request 😂 .. I’m gonna stalk you to death 🤣) of Ryker reconnecting with his dad and them spending a holiday together or a novella of Ryker and Jody going on a camping trip with of course .. forever faithful and loving Marshmallow. 😊 Loved the ending and the epilogue of this novel .. it was dope. 😍

Favorite excerpts from the novel: 💗💜💗

”When Jody Wilson's brother busted into the bathroom stall, catching him with a cock in his mouth, he didn't see his life. He saw a parade of cocks. Long, short, thick, thin, pale, dark, cut, uncut and all the variations in-between. Every dick he'd ever sucked popped into his head while the dick he had between his lips popped out of his mouth.” <=== This is what I call my favorite kind of cocktail. 😂👏

“It was a game, pillow talk, but there was something about having Jody as his very willing boytoy that just made Ryker want to end this game and push his cock deep into Jody's ass. Like a true Mountain Man, Ryker wanted to claim him. Own him.”

"I'll find you and tie you up and ride you just like a bucking bronco."

“No one but his parents had ever held his hand before. Jody tried to capture everything about the moment so he could remember forever.”

"You once said that some of the best things in life hurt."

"I can't promise you a lot, but I can promise you I will never abandon you."

“What they shared now was like handing Ryker his soul. But Ryker handed Jody his soul too, making them even.”

"Fuck me, Ryker." "Jody." "We've done the sweet and slow. Now let's do the rough and nasty."

"This isn't a short run for me." "No?" "I'm in this with you for the long haul."

"You gave me you, and that's the best gift of all."

Excuse me while I take a cold shower. Because HOLY HOTNESS!

Ryker is one dirty boy, and Jody can't get enough. Ryker strives to do the honorable thing by the "kid" he picked up at a glory hole (and they say romance is dead), but Jody is having none of that. He wants dick, and he wants it now.

I read this cuddly, sexy story in one go. I loved both MCs and their Marshmallow!

My biggest weakness is guys who love 🐕 .

Jody's brother was scum of the earth, but he got his comeuppance.

The ending is a perfect (maybe too perfect?) HEA. Brass bed, tighty whities, and family reunion included.

Oh, the FEELS!

That was so much fun to re-read, I forgot what a deliciously dirty mouth Ryker has!

Whoa, perfection! This was the best book by this author I've read yet - sweet, funny, romantic, hot... literally a smile on my face the whole way through.

Really great, creative characters and a terrific plot, the book flowed seamlessly and I couldn't put it down. It could have been 500 pages longer and I still wouldn't have stopped till I finished ;)

I’ve been going back and forth between rounding this up and down for a while now. In the end, I decided to round it up because my main reason for rounding it down was the comparison I kept drawing with the book (and the rating I gave it) I read right before this. Since that book was really good, I decided it wasn’t fair to penalize this one just because of timing.

This book was entertaining enough that I read it quickly and mostly enjoyed it for what it was.
In a note before the book starts the author says, “Hey, it's fantasy time. Don't take anything you read here seriously.” He’s referring to STDs, the necessity of wearing condoms, and to not trust strangers when it comes to have kinky sex with them, but I took his advice about the book in more general terms. It was supposed to be a light, slightly kinky read, and I was perfectly okay with it.
Until it tried to be something more and failed. Serious issues were introduced (sometimes resulting into OTT scenarios), past traumas revealed, and character growth happened, but it was all written very superficially, there was no delving deeper, it was all dealt in a matter of days or sometimes minutes. That’s just not how life works. And that could’ve been fine, anyway.
Under other circumstances, I could’ve loved it like I’ve loved other books with the same limitations, but for that to happen it should’ve “clicked” better with me, and that simply didn’t happen.
I’ve realized that the biggest problem is that the author’s voice doesn’t work for me at more than a “meh” level. I've read another one of his books before and, despite finding good things in it, it was just average. I like the premises, and I can even appreciate the general outlines, but this author's kind of execution clearly isn’t for me.
And that includes the kinky aspect. On paper, it was so perfect it could’ve been written specifically for me, but it left me almost indifferent. YMMV.

Rereading revised and extended version. An extra chapters been added, giving the story a solid happy ending, in more ways than one. Bruce’s stories often have a role play element and he adds a little extra. More than that he gives more closure to Ryker. Still enjoyed it a helluva lot!

I'm really liking Bruce Rose's stories and this was a intriguing mix of a little raunchy and a lot of romance. This is the third book of his I've read, and they're each unique. It's not just PWP. He gets a lot of characterization into a novella of this length. Jody is young and a little innocent but he's 22 and Ryker is a big, tough 33 year old, lonely trucker. When his brother catches Jody at a truck stop glory hole and leaves him behind, Ryker, the "man mountain", the recipient of Jody's oral skills, rescues him. Intending to leave Jody somewhere safe, his sad resignation and their mutual attraction keep them together. Jody was an unusual character. It was a bit hard to believe he'd never questioned his brother about the life they'd led but his life history, as it unfolded, did support it enough to carry the device. I really liked Ryker, who although rather cynical about life, allows himself to open up and connect with Jody.

Ryker succumbs to Jody's innocent wiles and gives Jody a careful but seriously hot, dirty-talking introduction to sex. In between the sexy times, they begin to exchange the details of their similar pasts and forge a strong bond. It gets challenged by the addition of Marshmallow the puppy, which totally put me on team Ryker and Jody. It's not a ton of plot but it is a plot and delivers a sweet and heartwarming romance and HEA. This was a charming and sexy read that was just what I needed, especially after some gloomy disappointments.

While I liked most of this book, the ending felt so rushed that I got whiplash from it.

Ryker is a truck driver who lives in his truck. He doesn’t do relationships so a glory hole in a bathroom is all he indulges in. And just when he is been given the best head ever, someone barges in and starts hitting the person on the other end of the hole.

Jody is 22 and been living with his brother in his car for quite some time. Jody doesn’t know where to go so he stays with his brother, even though he gets hit regularly. And just when he enjoying himself with the person using the glory hole, his brother catches him and starts hitting him. Jody couldn’t be more grateful when he is rescued by the big man who was using the glory hole.

When Jody’s brother leaves him in the middle of nowhere Ryker takes pity on him and takes the young man with him. But Ryker doesn’t do relationships, so Jody better get that out of his head...

This started out with some lovely hurt/comfort. And I liked the parts where Ryker and Jodie were getting to know each other. The sexy times were enjoyable and fitted the story, so so far so good. But somewhere around 80% we got more and more sex (too much), and then all of a sudden Ryker has a complete change of heart, is all on board with the relationship and then we get an epilogue where we’re skipping two months, they have found a house, are living together and Jody even found a job selling his drawings. Uuuh, I was still somewhere way back. It didn’t feel as a gradual transition, but wham bam: HEA!

I thought this could have been better if that part was handled a bit slower. Because the hurt/comfort parts were lovely and the romance was quite sweet. But the ending was just too rushed for me.

So much fun!4 Stars!..

There were some seriously great lines in his book. Add to that some ridiculously filthy sex and dirty talk, and you’re in for a hell of a ride.

I mean, the book opens up with a glory hole scene which was—yes I’m going to say it—glorious. Don’t see many of those in books nowadays....what a shame. Truly. They seem to have gone the way to Tab.

So, we have our big, bad, dirty trucker Ryker enjoying the succulent oral lavings of Jody in a truck stop when everything goes to hell. Gotta give it to my boy Jody, though, he is one dedicated laver because even though he gets kicked in the face, he still wants to finish what he started. Now, that’s what I call follow through, my dears.

Jody ends up hitching a ride with Ryker after his brother desserts him at the truck stop. What ensues is a lovely romance with lots, and lots of entrances and exits of a variety of body parts into other cavities. It was truly succulent witnessing our young Jody lose his cherry.

So, things aren’t all rosy for our lovers. Ryker fears letting anyone close. Jody fears greeting left behind. There are a few odd tangents that work themselves into the end of the story in a slightly awkward manner which “wrap up” the lovers’ issues. It was like watching high school girls wear six inch heels for the first time. But, thankfully, they didn’t fall; nor did this book.

Well, that was mighty delectable. Sweet biscuit!

I feel good knowing these two found each other. Just when you think it can’t get any worse, or more lonely, a little shake-up to the heart and soul and all of a sudden - there’s hope. And Marshmallow, the puppy that holds it all together.

🥰🥵☄️🔥😍

Holy Hotness!! This short managed to be both seriously sexy and so sweet at the same time.

It’s a very talented author that can pack so much, including comeuppance, into a short novella. Jody & Ryker are beautiful together and I’m going to be checking out more from this author.

Highly recommend!!

Admittedly I have a penchant for stories with blue collar workers, and especially those that are down on their luck and have to work hard for their happy ending.

There is so much to love about this story. The style and panache of the writing hooked me in much more quickly and thoroughly than I expected.

These working class guys are not expecting to have anything more than a fleeting interlude at a truck stop, and yet circumstance brings them together, and they find it a little bit more difficult to part ways as quickly as they anticipated.

I found it particularly refreshing that there's plenty of dirty talk, and there's also sensitivity and integrity. I appreciate how the characters took the time to think things through and change their minds. I love their banter, and their growing bond over difficult experiences in their past and present.

Not least, I love their shared affection for the puppy abandoned at a truck stop and rescued by Jody and named by Ryker. I was rooting for these guys to take a risk and fall in love.

'The Long Haul' is funnier and more touching than I initially expected. Frankly, I found it difficult to put down, and I was reading it well into the night, way beyond my bedtime until the words were blurring for me.

Incidentally, the Author's Note at the start of the book made me laugh, he suggests that we, 'be smart, be safe, and keep buying my books so I can buy more beer and condoms.'

By the end of the book, I immediately bought a second book, so in this case the beer is on me (well a very small one perhaps). Cheers all the same Bruce Rose, here's to lots more books please!

I received this book free as a prize during the Goodreads MMRG yearly event and was later provided an updated/expanded copy as well. Thank you to the author.

This well-written story has dirty talk kink, an age gap romance, a cute puppy, and an interesting twist.

I much enjoyed the beginning which pulled me in, but just as the story began to read a bit slow to me... along comes Marshmallow! I am a huge sucker for dogs, and while I would have loved it if Marshmallow had been given more of an individual personality than what came across, I cannot complain too much because her introduction into the story picked up the pace for me and allowed me to see so much more depth of the two MC. I was touched by the story of Raine *sniffle*. Another bonus for me, one which I was unaware of from the blurb going in, is that one MC is an artist--being one myself, I am always partial to stories with artists of any kind. Also I totally did not see the twist coming!

This is not my first read by this author and for those who like reading kink, I recommend the D/s series.

EEEEEEEE! Well, I just LOVED this! I adored Jody and Marshmallow, loved them to pieces. And the chemistry between Ryker and Jody was just insanely hot! They were ridiculously sexy together, and then sweet, and then cuddly and wonderful, and I just loved this story.

The voice to this writing was excellent, it flowed so well and naturally, and I just loved it. My first thing I have read from this author, but hopefully not the last.

Highly recommended for when you want a quick, super sexy, fun story!

This romance starts in a pretty gritty place (glory hole at a truck stop with the older brother of the hero kicking the heck out of him) but it is really a sweet romance.

We have two lonely heroes and there are a few dramatic turns but we move steadily toward a Happily Ever After.

I also love down on your luck and working class heroes and here we get both and a puppy.

There could have been more time after the we agree to be together to make it a richer read but it was a nice one.

Jody is 22 but barely looks 16. While at a truckstop, Jody is caught by his brother, James, at a glory hole giving Ryker a bj. James starts to beat and kick Jody but Ryker intervenes and pulls the two apart. James drives off leaving Jody, returning briefly to throw Jody's rucksack out the car window.
Ryker is the complete opposite of twink looking Jody but is a gentle giant. However he's not looking to become "Dad" to an orphan stray. Jody though is made of stern stuff and soon Ryker is doing things with and to Jody that he never envisaged.
A nice, low angst story that could have easily been PWP but thankfully what we have is a heart-warming romance between two men and a dog. There is however plenty of dirty talk and even some role-playing sex.

So, here's the thing. I'm really not that into trucker stories. Growing up, my dad was a long haul trucker, and that somehow makes the whole "erotic romance with truckers" concept kind of iffy in my head. Call it daddy issues if you wish, I don't know...

However, that being said I have read and enjoyed other stories, romances as well as erotica, with truckers, because apparently I can get over myself now and again. And my GR friend Trio loves this book, so when she let me know that it was available through the DBML programme I thought: why not...

And I did enjoy it, even if it wasn't a book I would have picked up on my own. It was well written and easily read and the two MC's were likable and interesting. They were both sweet and hot together and who doesn't love a puppy? (Even if I do wish she took up less space on the cover)...

I thought the ending was too rushed though, way too many things got resolved way too quickly, the issues with the brother and the father were both kind of major plot points that I felt needed to have been given more attention. Especially the father issue, either it should have been explored further or it should have been left out all together.

But aside from that I really enjoyed this sweet and steamy romance about a cynic lonesome trucker and the young man he picks up at a glory hole at a truck stop and would recommend it to others. It has also made me want to take a look at Bruce Rose's back catalogue, as I enjoyed his writing style.

Thanks to the author and the Don't Buy My Love programme for the book.

Sexy and Sweet! Perfect Combination!

I'm absolutely willing to climb into the cab with Ryker and Jody to go anywhere they're heading. That's how much I loved these two guys. There's a bit of a trope going on since Jody is an enthusiastic glory hole participant yet remains utterly innocent in all other ways due to the isolation imposed on him by his parents first and his homophobic brother second. Ryker is set up to be the hero to his "damsel in distress" yet Bruce Rose manages to make Jody very much his own man while keeping Ryker more realistic than the audience may have been inclined to see him through the eyes of Jody.

Does anyone ever love a big, gruff guy more than when he proves to be a kind man who rescues stray people and stray puppies?

Ryker stole my heart as easily as he stole Jody's in Long Haul. I fell in love with him from the beginning when he's this huge giant "Mountain Man" dealing with Jody's abusive brother as if the dude was a pesky fly. He could have given a serious beat down to James only he chose not to because it was unnecessary: all Ryker wanted was to get James to leave Jody alone which didn't require him to use all the force he was capable of to accomplish. Restraint really did come across far sexier than uncontrolled rage would have for that scene.

Jody could have inspired pity in me with his set-up as a victim in every sense of the word. He doesn't have "victim mentality" though. Bruce Rose managed to make Jody a dreamer, an innocent, and the kind of character it's hard not to love to pieces. I found his artistic skills easy to relate to because if someone takes your words from you, how do you communicate? People aren't meant to live in silence. Humans are social creatures. I loved how he managed to get Ryker to see himself from an outside POV which wasn't judging him based on first appearances. I loved how he became as strong as Ryker told him he could be. I really loved him being a champion for Marshmallow since it showed how good he was at heart. His rescue of the puppy really drove home for me the idea Jody would have been a good man regardless of whether or not he'd been big enough, strong enough, rough enough to beat his brother down himself.

Some men simply aren't destined to be bullies regardless of how they're built.

Overall, I wanted to keep driving with these guys for the "Long Haul" from page one to the very end of the epilogue. I received my initial copy complimentary through the Don't Buy My Love review program on the M/M Romance Group on Goodreads. I chose to buy a copy for my permanent library; I look forward to reading more stories written by Bruce Rose. He's proven to be a fantastic character author with a talent for world-building I rarely see in contemporary fiction and I can't wait to try out more of his wonderful work!

Synopsis: Jody gets beaten badly by his brother when he is found in a truck stop restroom engaging in sexual activities. The trucker who was the recipient of his favours pulls Jody's brother off him, and when his brother leaves him there, offers Jody a ride to where he has to take his cargo. Jody wants to keep riding with Ryker, because even though he is big and scary, Jody feels protected.
Ryker doesn't get involved with anyone, since his job and life keeps him on the road all the time. When he offers to take Jody to the next city, he plans on dumping him there. There is something about Jody, though, that speaks to Ryker, and he agrees to let Jody come along with him to finish his run. Along the way, though, Jody, who looks a lot younger than he really is, proves that he might be just the type of person Ryker didn't know that he was looking for.

What I liked: even though Jody didn't have much experience managing himself, once he had incentive, he went full out. Jody was sweet and optimistic, in spite of his family. I liked how protective Ryker was of Jody, and that he just wanted to make Jody happy. I liked how their personalities and sexual interests meshed, and how caring they were with each other.

What I didn't like: it was a little hard for me to get inside Ryker's head, just because he kept his reasons for remaining alone to himself until really close to the end of the story. Also, an extended cab long box pick-up truck can't make a u-turn. I lol'd at the idea that a big rig, even a bob tail one, could make one. In my mind, I substituted "circled the block" for "flipped a uie".

Overall impression: Adorable. Jody and Ryker were really sweet together, and Jody was the sweetest person imaginable, without being too perfect. I will definitely read more by this author.

Lost souls seem to find each other in a truck stop bathroom, there is even a glory hole involved, even with all the very hot sex, this is a surprisingly touching...no pun intended...story. Both main characters are such sweet men deep down, you can't help but swoon for them.

I received a copy of this book from the author via the M/M Romance Group’s Don’t Buy My Love program in exchange for an honest review.

There was a lot to like about this book – interesting couple, sweetness but still dirty talk and sex and a puppy! Ryker is a long haul truck driver who does not do relationships after some bad experiences in his past. Jody is in his early twenties, living with an abusive brother and has very little life experience. His brother attacks him after catching him (and Ryker) at a glory hole at a truck stop and Ryker takes Jody along when his brother deserts him and the budding relationship begins.

The story was insta-lust but as much as Ryker tried to resist Jody pushed for more intimacy. I liked how the trust grew between the two, Jody breaking down the defenses Ryker had built to keep people out. It was also really nice to see Jody begin to assert himself, gaining confidence as the relationship with Ryker developed. The abusive brother pops up again to throw a wrench in the story but he shows his true colors and Jody & Ryker are able to move forward.

The story wraps up a little too quickly, squeezing quite a bit into the last bit of the book. There is a sub plot that is introduced and resolved in just a few pages, which I think would have been better served to either have a bit more dedicated to it or to have been left out entirely. Overall I enjoyed the story very much.

I really liked this sweet mostly fluff low angst read. The characters were great, I loved that Gruff Ryker couldn't resist being charmed by sweet Jody and Marshmallow. It moves very quickly, pretty insta-love. But some times that's what you need. The only real angst (aside from Ryker trying to keep distance from Jody) comes from Jody's brother who is pretty much a scumbag. The police weren't much better. Sadly it was pretty realistic. But ends up being wrapped up pretty quickly. I'd recommend for when you want something that's just going to be low key and not that deep.

This book was received free from the author in return for an honest review via the Goodreads Don't Buy My Love program.

This is the second story I've been privileged to read by Mr. Rose, and I was blown away. So much packed into these pages, but I felt nothing was missing. Yes, it moved along at a good clip, but the fast paced worked as did the gaps of time near the end of the story.

Clearly, opposites attract with Ryker, a mountain of a man, long haul trucker, and the thrown away, cute as a button little brother Jody. Twists and turns create a deeper bond rather than breaking them apart. The dog was a sweet touch of humanity. Some humorous segements has me chuckling, which is a plus to any review.

After two very good books, quick paced, romanace and sexy good times, I will definitely be on the hunt for more by this author.

Ryker is a thirty-three year old truck driver; when opportunities present itself, makes use of gloryholes between driving routes.

Jody is twenty-two, almost twenty-three years old. He indulges in the gloryholes and oral sex that presents itself during his brother and his travel to stock up first aid(?) kits at the rest stop. When Jody’s brother catches him at it he starts beating Jody.

Ryker scares Jody brother off, causing Jody to be abandoned by his brother. Unable to leave the kid behind Ryker offers to take him to the next town he’s dropping his delivery in. Jody has his own plans and decides he just needs to convince Ryker that he’ll be an asset to Ryker.

It was erotic, sweet and romantic and had a good balance of each. Ryker fighting as hard as he was to keep himself off the virginal Jody was sweet in a way. He came off as gruff and because of his physical attributes, mean, but he was really a sweetheart even though he kept protesting such. Jody innocence and well… unleashed repressed desires...towards Ryker was what made it a fun read. I enjoyed the novel and was glad to see Jody’s brother got what was coming to him.

I have to give the author major kudos for the short preface involving safe sex.

I loved the juxtapositions that kept cropping up in this book. Both Ryker and Jody were living in a sort of vacuum when they met, one character’s void was self imposed, the other’s was driven by self preservation against helpless circumstances. One character’s outward appearance screamed of a boldness he didn’t allow himself to have, while the other’s boldness only needed a safe haven in order to come out from behind a shy countenance. I found Ryker and Jody to be well-developed, believable, and emotionally available to connect with as a reader.

The beginning of the book was attention-grabbing, the ending was gratifying, and everything in between kept my rapt attention. I also really enjoyed how, other than the antagonist, there weren’t any other (non canine) characters to distract from the bubble Ryker and Jody created around themselves in the cab of Ryker’s truck. Yes, they ran into incidental people during their journey, but those people were often fleeting and far between. Hats off to Bruce Rose for creating such a rich and well-paced story in a very limited setting with only two personalities playing in the game.
