John Maynard Keynes (1883-1946): Klasik iktisatta çığır açan Britanyalı iktisatçı. John Maynard Keynes, 1st Baron Keynes (CB, FBA), was an English economist particularly known for his influence in the theory and practice of modern macroeconomics.

Keynes married Russian ballerina Lydia Lopokova in 1925.

Keynes'in kitaplarının Türkçede bir çeviri talihsizliği var. Belki de bu ünlü iktisatçının yazım dilinin zorluğuyla da ilişkilidir, bilemiyorum. Ama Türkçede okuduğum iki kitabının da çevirisi kötü. Hatta Genel Teori'nin 60'lardaki ilk çevirisi gibi modern çevirisi de kötü. Bu da hâlihazırda anlaşılması güç olan Keynes kitaplarını Türkçede daha da zor anlaşılır hale getiriyor. Bu doğrultuda Para Üzerine Bir İnceleme de zor bir kitap. İktisat öğrencilerinin ve iktisat alanında çalışanların okuyacağı ama buna rağmen anlamakta güçlük çekeceği bir kitap. Zaten bir defa okumakla bir Keynes kitabına nüfuz etmek de pek mümkün değil. Paranın doğasına ve değerine odaklanan bu kitap 1930 yılında yayımlanmış olsa da hâlâ parasal iktisat üzerine önemli şeyler söylüyor. Elbette okurun anlayabildiği ölçüde.

İlk defa Keynes okudum ve açıkçası kitap benim için biraz zorlayıcıydı. Ekonomi ve iktisat bilgisi gerektiren bir dili var; bu alanda eğitim almış biri için çok daha anlaşılır olurdu diye düşünüyorum. Kitap boyunca birçok ekonomik formül, teori ve kavramsal açıklama yer alıyor ama benim alanım bu yönde olmadığı için bazı kısımlar ilgimi çekmedi.
Yine de “paranın satın alma gücü” kavramını ele alış biçimini oldukça beğendim. Paranın sadece bir değişim aracı değil, toplumdaki bireylerin tüketim gücüyle doğrudan ilişkili bir kavram olduğunu çok açık ve etkileyici bir şekilde anlatmış. Ayrıca uluslararası banka fikrini de dönemin şartlarına göre oldukça ileri bir bakış açısıyla açıklamış olması hoşuma gitti.
Genel olarak benim için yer yer ağır ilerleyen ama ekonomiyle yakından ilgilenenler için zihin açıcı olabilecek bir kitap.

Some shoddy anthropology for the purpose of definitions and clarity in the early chapters make for a bit of a slog but he puts it aside once he gets into the meat. Though advocating an interventionist hand on the part of central banks, I find Keynes’ recommendations a lot more amenable with fiscal tightening and austerity policies associated with conservative economics than he is given credit for. The usual obfuscation of imperialist relations in his discussion of international trade and reticence toward the concept of monopoly found in bourgeois economists

Keynes deserves credit as one of the architects of modern life. More important to a reader, he was a fascinating man. A member of the Bloomsbury set, he whiled away much of his twenties musing with Virginia Woolf, EM Forster, Lytton Strachey, Clive Bell and others who cared deeply for good writing. As might be expected then, Keynes' prose holds up well. Of course, Keynes was also privy to remarkable personal experiences - he was sitting at Lloyd Georges' side for much of the Versailles negotiations. That experience prompted his most accessible book, the 1919 best seller The Economic Consequences of the Peace. In that work Keynes makes the case that the terms imposed on Germany at the close of the First World War would prove 'unendurable' and he fears for the manner in which "men might seek to escape their misfortunes". For me the most interesting angle of that work is Keynes' case that seemingly trivial details of the meeting prevented Wilson, in particular, from standing up to Clemenceau. The sketches of these players are remarkable. I am persuaded that Keynes had a remarkable knack for seeing to the core of a person's motivations and weaknesses. If all his subject matters had stood up to the attrition of time as well as Keynes' writing has, this would be a five star book.
