James Smith is a programmer, internet activist, security expert, and bestselling author. Prior to becoming a writer full-time, he spent 5 years as a software security engineer. After his years of experience he decided to take his knowledge of online security and try to help as many people as he could.
I've anticipated more technical content - how does Tor operate, what are its technical & architectural foundations, key challenges, potential directions of development, etc. But this book is rather a guide on how to use Tor & satellite tools to truly remain anonymous (or rather - as close to anonymous as possible). Some topics are really interesting (anonymous bitcoin transfers, using Tor over Tor, weakspot between ISP & Tor), especially real life cases (Sabu & others) - what's even better, they are all quite well documented with links (however, I didn't have time to check all of them).
But in the end, I've expected a bit more meat from the book itself. Having a link to start with is fine, but I could not help feeling that the book approaches the topic very selective - on the other hand this selection sometimes is very spread (from getting a lawyer & list of countries w/o extradition treaties to JavaScript cookies).
Anyway, there's quite a lot of interesting stuff to find here as well.
If you are at all worried about your privacy online then I would recommend this book to you. It has step by step instructions that were very easy for me to understand.
A few times while listening to this I thought, "does this need to be an audiobook?" And honestly, I don't know. I'm an auditory learner -- so listening to things help me more than reading them (which is one of the reasons I love audiobooks so much). But, I think that this book would have been better as a youtube series or even maybe a podcast.
Either way, the book itself was chalk full of details about how to get set up using the "dark net" and what to do and avoid. It also gives some details into the reasonings why and why not for certain aspects of the internet and dark web.
It's definitely detail-oriented. I couldn't sit and listen to this for more than 30-40 mins at a time since it was just so detailed.
If you enjoy books about how to get things set up, technical books, and books on the dark web, then this book is definitely for you. If you are looking to get set up using the Tor browser and want to know how to set it up -- this book will get you there.
Overall, a pretty dry and boring detail-oriented book. But not something I'm mad or sad that I listened to either.
প্রকাশ থাকে যে ঃ - "Some people have an invincibility mindset that nothing will ever be able to be tied to them or derived from their online communications. Well guess what? They (সরকার / আইনি অথবা বেআইনি সিকিউরিটি মনিটরস) do not have to use your online communications to find out who you are. All that needs to happen, is for you to do something stupid and become a person of interest and they will be monitoring your activities online to the best of their abilities.
Remember you only need to screw up once." - Very well said.
Good book on cyber-security. I will be using it as a reference for awhile until I master and memorize everything that there is to do for maximum privacy. Very informative. The book also talks a lot about the lengths to which people can go to try and circumvent your efforts to remain anonymous and ways to prevent and avoid each different tactic!
Very good book. Took me a couple days to finish it. It's full of tons of different information as well as links for more research into some of the topics if you so please. Would recommend to anyone looking to improve their internet privacy!
This was a great book. I'm a total noobie to TOR and deep web matters and this book took all the random bits of information that would have taken me forever to find and put it all together into one easy to read book. I would definitely recommend this to anyone who wants to improve their anonymity!
