Soo uh, I just binged 73 chapters (I'm only marking this volume down cause I'm lazy) in two days... I LOVED IT!!!
It had everything that I could ask for in a manga: the fluff, the angst, the story line, the feels, the grit, the relationships, the characters--and all in such good balance. The romance never took over the koto training/competitions and nothing impeded over character developments. It made me cry and laugh all at the same time. I love these koto idiots playing their hearts out. Uggh YES!!! YES!!! YES!!!
My only sadness is that I have to wait for the chapters to be translated and that it is not licensed in America in physical print form. PLEASE LICENSE! I WILL BUY!!
Now, I am going to go watch the anime to relive it all again... and wait for episodes there...
Okay, I don't really review anything, but I felt like I had to considering that the other review posted for this great manga is an unflattering one and does not give the manga justice to its actual quality.
Quick synopsis, this manga focuses on a Koto club, its struggles and the struggles of its members and how each challenge is overcome through companionship and hard work. First, I'll talk about the characters. There is Chika, the misunderstood delinquent, Kurata, the president of the club and is described as a Nadeshiko, and then lastly there is Satowa, the Koto prodigy. Now, it may seem that these characters fit in a box, with the ribbon and bows all done, but this is further from the truth. Yes, initially, the characters are quite predictable; they fit into stereotypes easily. However, the manga does a wonderful job of developing them and their relationships, where there initial 2-D personalities are fleshed with nuance and compassion. Chika's development is a simple yet profound one, changing his image of a deliquient and opening up his heart to the club. The same can be said for Satowa, who learns to become more honest and forthcoming with her feelings. Lastly, Kurata slowly gains the confidence to play the Koto, and more importantly protect his club. All of these developments don't happen over night; it's a slow burn getting these characters to mature and face their demons. But, this slow process makes them believable, it makes them live and breathe. Their flaws make them only more agreeable instead of the other way around. Also, while these three main characters are given the spotlight, any new character and all the side characters (and I mean all of them), are dealt with beautifully and given proper time to be characters.
The story is quite predictable-- it's about the Koto club aiming to reach nationals, a lofty goal that becomes more attainable after every passing chapter. What kept me interested, and at many times emotionally compromised, is the character interactions and character dynamics. Seriously, give this manga a chance, read the first 15 chapters. If something is annoying or doesn't make sense, all is explained by the manga in due time-- just trust me on this.
Honestly, this manga should be more popular than it is. It is a lovely work, with amazing art, and heart to it that I don't see in a lot of manga now. This work was made with soul, and it is evident on every page and spread.
(Also for those of you wondering what a Nadeshiko is, it is described as a Japanese beauty. Basically, whoever is a Nadeshiko is quiet, meek, and shy.)
I really like this volume. I didn’t know anything and I didn’t expect much. But I was surprised because this manga is for the koto club. If you didn’t hear about this musical instrument - you are not alone. Now I remember when I watched “Heartstrings” with the actress Park Shin - hye. Her character playing with this instrument. In fact random memory, but yea. You can learn more fact about the koto. “The Moro has 13 bridges. And the musician need to adjust the bridges so that the melody coordinates.” It’s not so simple. Especially for someone who hear about music in the moment. We have a few characters and I like them all. Takezo is simple normal student, with ambition for new member of the koto club. He want to play and the simplest- be happy. Chika is my favourite for now. Sometimes he is really stubborn and he can react overdone, but this is so funny. 😂 I like how purposeful he is and he’s friendship with Takezo. Chika truly want to learn something new and help your friends. We have and Hotsuki- san. I can’t say much about her, because I’m little confuse. I know what she want’s, but I don’t like her actions. We see in the next volumes. 🦋
Très sympa premier tome sur un club de koto, un instrument de musique traditionnel. Il se passe vraiment beaucoup de choses dans ce tome et j’ai hâte de lire le 2 (27 tomes en cours au Japon wow c’est impressionnant !)
I'm just gonna rate the whole 100+ chapters here. *chef's kiss 500x* so good, slow burn romance, strange new Japanese instrument, aiming to be the best but also enjoy your hobby. Ahh, yes. Typical HS Mangas.
I’m only checking this volume off as ‘read’, even though I am currently caught up with the series, just so I don’t have to mark them all. Currently at chapter 116.
But wow I absolutely adore this series. I love that everyone in the friend group has had a moment to shine and an arc dedicated to just them/their backstory. The friendships the characters have together is so wholesome and heartwarming. They are always there for each other and looking out for one another which I love.
I always love seeing them become more confident and sure of themselves, both in their koto playing, and with each other. The trust they have with each other is unbreakable.
Chapters read: 1-129 (yes I binged 30 volumes in 3 days… I’m sane)
I wish I found this manga later because the latest chapter is just on the brink of what is building up to be the climax of the whole series and I’m punching the air af knowing I’m gonna have to wait.
This is a great music manga with a very likeable cast of underdog characters. It’s funny, touching, genuine, and lacks the shallow melodrama present in most high school stories. The romance is light with no angst at all. The focus is on platonic bonds. I love how their growth as koto players reflects their personal growth and relationships with each other.
I’m on my way to watch the anime, I know I’m gonna tear up when I hear the music.
*review for entire series* Where do I even begin to explain how much I adore this manga? Just the idea of a group of people learning to find themselves through a hobby they didn’t have any general interest in is something so beautiful to me. And not only that, but the way they find family in each other after feeling neglected and alone - it really just goes to show that you can find true family almost anywhere. I’m also going to use this as an opportunity to say that Chika Kudou is one of my favourite characters of all time.
I knew it. Kudo have a perfect pitch ears. Or maybe it's just my guess, but how come he can determine the differences between the sounds so easily? He can't even tune the koto.
At first, my only aim for reading this manga is to see Kudo Chika and Hozuki Satowa together. Well, there are still long road to go. So, I didn't enjoy nor enjoy it. It's so-so. Plus the fact that this is a music themed manga while I'm in the process of avoiding music entirely.
A great start to the series about Koto, the traditional Japanese music instrument. It's not very original in its execution, classic high school club story, but the characters are very different, all 3 main characters are likeable and I'm excited to see where it is going.
picking this up because i'm hoping to fill the void that chihayafuru left in my heart lol. first volume was pretty good, hopefully the rest of the series delivers.
rereading the volume where it all started reminds me why i love this franchise so much!! 🥺🌸 it’s all about youth and friendships and angst and the beautiful koto that ties them all together—basically a slice of life musical shounen manga with romance subplot (it’s a mega slow burn) which i’m such a sucker for 😔🩷
i don’t know how amyu-sensei does it but she’s so gooood in balancing the drama and comedic elements of the story, especially in this volume (coz girl i know of a later volume wherein the drama really goes haaard 🥹), and introducing her characters—you just know they’re gonna go through an amazing character arc in the future (and i guarantee you, they will). her characters are flawed, funny and stupid at the same time but they each face a problem on their own (they’re teenagers) that’s why i love love seeing them grow, especially chika (i'm soft for boys like him) 🥹✋🏻
i’m an aspiring novelist so i really love it when an author does really well in writing a character’s goal, backstory, and psyche—particularly if it's a male (i have a huge fascination on male MCs lol). this might be an overstatement but in the later volumes you guys will understand... what volume 1 offers us is just a glimpse of the beautiful plot and character development that will soon take place 😩🤌🏻🌸✨
i highly recommend this manga to someone who's into a wholesome plot, well-written characters, youth angst, great character arcs, found family trope, high school romcom, and music (the koto's gonna go so hard in the anime pls watch it!!). and no, this is not yaoi—just pure boy friendships in which two of them has a respective love interest ☺️
can't wait to experience everything all over again ⋆.˚🦋༘⋆ 5 stars!!
I watched the anime before reading the manga as I have no clue if they will ever continue the anime. I am hoping they will. As people have pointed out its hard to imagine music in manga and I think this is where the anime excels as I have never heard of a Koto before this anime. Most of the time the anime follows the manga pretty good as in this case but I have seen more in the manga and even helped clarify some things in the anime. I really enjoyed this anime and manga because of the relationship the koto club has and seeing them become better people by joining this club. I also really like the romance between possible pairs hence the drive for me to see if they ever confess their feelings. I haven't read many Mangas but this anime made me want too. I highly suggest watching someone play the Koto if not the anime just so you have an idea of what it sounds like to help imagine it a little better.
I am completely surprised by how much I love this manga. The plot, the characters, the youthful high school romance and drama, and most of all, the art style-are really really good.
For me, it's a little hard to like mangas about music because I can't hear their music so I always feel like I don't completely understand the emotion the characters feel during the particular scene, but I really like the way the mangaka drew those scenes. Honestly, I like the musical scenes better in the manga than in the anime.
I had the chance to dive into "Sounds of Life" thanks to a publisher-provided copy. As a newcomer to the series, I was a bit unsure if it would be my cup of tea. But as the first volume unfolded, I found myself increasingly intrigued by the story.
The characters introduced in this first volume are really interesting. Even early on, you get a vibe of their different personalities and dreams, and it's hinting at some engaging stuff to come. I'm totally looking forward to knowing them better as the series goes on.
The pacing felt just right, setting things up nicely for whatever comes next. I'm so stoked to keep going with the story and see where it all leads!
Initially I'd expected this world be a generic ecchi/harem story, but it's much much better than that. The characters feel real; they show genuine reactions and behave like actually teenagers. The relationships are developed really well. And the overall feel of the story really uplifting.
I actually already watched the anime but the art in the manga is really nice and the relationships between the characters are explored a bit more here which is a big plus.
Only drawback is you can't actually hear the koto being played but having watched the anime first definitely makes up for that.
The first time I read this manga was when it wasn’t popular and i think it was just 35 chapters at that time, and pretty much before it got an anime. And i remember i really loved it back then and it was so special to me because it was the only music manga that i loved and cared about. And now rereading it after years makes me emotional. IT WILL ALWAYS BE ONE OF MY ALL TIME FAVORITE MANGAS~
