After young Tetsu sees his parents murdered in front of him by a Choushuu assassin, he is torn between joining the Shinsengumi, a vicious troop of special police, and leaving his rage behind him to become a peacemaker.
Every time I read this, I put it down feeling sad that it's over. However, now that five issues have come out, I have more to continue to look forward to! I find that I love this manga series especially because it is based on history and I love historical fiction. All of the characters are distinct, flawed, and interesting. Plus the art is amazing.
-2018 Reading- I believe this may be my third time reading this series, but I'm not positive. I am again blown away at how incredible the translation is for this manga. I adore the art, though am aware of how off the proportions and perspectives are. I can sympathize with readers who find that too many characters look alike or have similar names (seriously, Tatsu AND Tetsu? As brothers?). But I think I know the story well enough for it to no longer be a problem. I love the timing for when we are introduced to the story. I love the history and I love the moral dilemma of the shinsengumi. Eager to continue.
It helps to know a little Japanese background before starting this series, but most of the history is explained in the notes as you go along. This series follows the anime, whereas Peacemaker Kurogane follows the aftermath. Great plot and likeable characters make this series hard to put down. Not to mention, the cover art is gorgeous!
I really like the Shinsengumi period and it's always fun to see different versions of the boys. Peace Maker is a decent shonen manga. The biggest problem I have with the first three volumes - that's as far as I got - is that some characters look too much alike: especially the extras/choushuu thugs, but also, most annoyingly, good guy Hijikata and bad guy Yoshida.
I would recommend this to shonen fans, but personally I've read other Shinsengumi stories that I prefer.
The interesting supporting cast really balances out the somewhat annoying protagonist. The art has interesting lines, especially in the action sequences. Looking forward to reading more, but then again, I do have a weakness for stories set in this historical period.
The art is confusing at times, the main character is so weak. The manga portrays a part of Japanese history by mixing fiction and facts. The story is satisfying as it seems very real. Just reading a fan translation on blurry edition is not enjoyable.
