Picked this up having thoroughly enjoyed Feud by the same author. I'm not a romcom reader generally , but this seemed to me well pitched: enjoying the absurdity of the heroine's situation and character without holding her up to ridicule. Plus, she's a woman who works in construction and gets a makeover but a) it isn't presented as a psychological or spiritual rebirth or a discovering of her inner femininity or any such, and she remains tough as old boots; and crucially b) the hero fancied the pants off her pre-makeover. I have no time for "But Miss Jones, you're beautiful!" Pay more attention, mate.

The hero teeters on the verge of arrogant jerk early on with some locker room talk and "you want me" stuff, but the author totally pulls it back, including a really lovely insightful first proper date, and some hurt and vulnerability from him.

The author hashtags her books #bigdumbsexyfun, which is sort of fair except it takes a lot of smarts to write this kind of book well. Big silly sexy fun, definitely, and I am here for it.

To be accurate - 3.58 stars!

Between a Rock and a Hot Mess follows the rivalry between construction company heads Riley Sinclair and Hudson Parker. The two share a mutual desire to be the best; the result being a professional relationship laden with competition. In a state of loneliness and wine-induced inebriation, Riley decides she is exhausted of her perpetual position in the "friend zone", which she believes is due to her tom-boy-ish ways, so she downloads an app that provides a step-by-step guide to making over your life and scoring the "perfect" man.

Does that synopsis sound hella cheesy?! It is. But it's a cute story. I quite like cheese, I was in the mood for cheese, and this happened to be exactly the right amount of cheese. The general plot was a little out-there, but it didn't succumb to the annoying "miscommunication and overreaction" form of conflict that riddles so many contemporary-romances. There was sort of a love triangle, but in all honesty, I quite liked what it added to the story.

This is a very well-written book by a WOC author with POC main characters (AND a boss of a female lead who doesn't stand for chauvinistic bullshit), which means it gets HELLA BONUS POINTS from me.

In short, if you're looking for a light, fun, and easy read, this is a great option!

Cute but really boring. The whole Ian situation was a waste of pages. I have no idea why the ex wife was mentioned as Hudson never even told Riley he was divorced.

Skipping book 2 because...

I found it ok but not great. I like that the author has a distinctive voice but there were things that I really didn't like (locker talk from the male characters; makeover; dating two guys at once). The romance is sweet, once you get past the set-up.

I have been in a rom-com kinda mood lately. Maybe because the whole ass world is a trash-fire right now. So reading rom-com is a form of self care right about now.

Anyway this is closer to 3.5 stars than 4 ... but I went up in the star -meter rather than down (C'mon Goodreads 1/2 stars are our friends!) because it legit made me LOL in places.

I liked Riley the heroine a lot. I actually liked her the most of all the characters in a book and that is wonderful because I love it when I love the herone! I like that she was a badass, competive, competent and I liked that she was in a male dominated business. A lot of the rom-coms I have been reading lately have had the heroine in true rom-com jobs (I mean dog walkers and bakers!).

I wasn't a huge fan of the hero at first because he was a little arrogant and full of himself and the locker room talk was a bit much. But I thought the author built some lovely layers with him later on and I fully on board with Parker.

Not a fan of makeovers for heroine (just not one of my tropes) and really not a fan of the heroine being crushing on another dude while the one that really turns her crank and is hot and available is right in front of her face (yeah... another one of my NOT tropes). So that is what took my rating down a bit. But like I said, this book made me smile and I genuinely liked the heroine.

Good book!

Between a Rock and a Hot Mess (The Sinclair Brides Book 1) by Phyllis Bourne
Between a Rock and a Hot Mess is told from the point of view of Riley Sinclair, a sassy, tomboy who works for Sinclair Construction, and Hudson Parker, her friendly nemesis and head of a rival construction company. The two of them have been at friendly odds for a while, usually in the form of some competitive sport like softball and bowling. The relationship becomes a three-way tug-of-war when Riley has a crush on Ian, a cute, but reserved man whom she has nothing in common with. Riley decides to reinvent herself with an app based on a hit television show that she and her girlfriends enjoy watching every week. She soon realizes that her plan worked out a little too good, and she finds herself having to choose between the man she's been crushing for, or the man who has been attentive, sweet, and a beast in bed. What a hot mess Riley's got herself in!

I enjoyed the story very much. Many parts had me laughing, and it was definitely nice to see a tomboyish kind of character being represented. There are very few heroines in romance novels that I can relate to. But Riley is the true exception!
The sensual scenes were minimal overall, most being closed-door, and not too explicit. Though there was that one scene in the office, but I found it more hilarious than anything (which I believe was the author's intention).
I really loved the relationship that Riley and Parker had. It was sweet, funny, and sexy at the same time. Parker was definitely the better man for her, though I did feel bad for Ian.
For those who had been following Phyllis Bourne's books, Riley Sinclair made a brief appearance in her Espresso Empire series. I was glad to finally be able to read her story.
My only issue with the story was that the ending felt a little rushed, and before I knew it, it was over. But overall, it did present a sweet happily ever after (along with some surprises to come).

This was a recommended read from one of my favorite authors, Kristan Higgins, and I'm so glad I picked it up!

Riley Sinclair is the epitome of a tom-boy, she runs a construction company (and likes to get her hands dirty), plays baseball and is a fierce competitor, and is more comfortable in coveralls and a hardhat than she is in a dress.

All of that changes though when she catches a glimpse of the business suit across the street from one of her jobs. She falls instantly in lust and dreams of a way to attract the heartthrob. At the same time, her annoying, pain-in-the-butt, incredibly sexy rival, Hudson Parker, complicates matters by challenging her on every level, especially the bedroom!

Talk about a Hot Mess.

In steps her friends and a makeover app designed by the star of Hot Mess, Delilah Cole. What ensues next is a hilarious, yet endearing set of mishaps that will have you rooting for Riley and hoping she sees the light before she lets the right man slip way!

I give Between a Rock and a Hot Mess 5 lovely kisses- A fun read!

Between a Rock and a Hot Mess is a funny but sexy romance that gave me some laugh out loud moments as I read it. Riley made an appearance in Moonlight Kisses (https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...) and I was glad to hear she'd gotten her own story. In this novel, Riley has to decide between the man she thinks she should be with, and the one who is really her perfect match.

Like Moonlight Kisses, this is an enemies to lovers story, and of course the couple brings the heat when they finally do connect (the office scene was hot). Check it out!

Funny and still hot!

Riley is adorable. She is strong and yet there is that soft side that wants the romance others seem to get. Hudson is a dream because he understands and is secure enough in himself to give Riley space even if it is done with a sneaky sexy undertone. The idea is to win Riley and he is going all out.
Good pace, humorous and well written, a nice way to chill out.

My first book by Mrs. Bourne and I loved it. I had the pleasure of meeting her at the Indie Love 2018 event in Atlanta. I will definitely add more books by her to my reading list. Great story. Loved Riley's personality. She gives it to you straight with no chasers.

Give and Take

Riley Sinclair and Hudson Parker are two of a kind, both into sports and head of major construction companies. Enjoy the fun as the competition, heats up. Laugh, cry and wonder what's next while dealing with a hot mess. Well-written, real characters, comedy at it's best, not to mention divas.

Nice break from the other types of romance novels I read. I'm on the second book now. Humor and not over board with sex but gives you the impression of sexyness. I would keep reading this series as it comes because Its so hard to find African American characters now on Kindle Unlimited that are not about the girl with the dope boy. Should I be offended?

An awesome ball player and construction crew leader, Riley Sinclair is pretty satisfied with her life. Except, she seems to be the last single woman in her girl group. She's got a crush on a business-type who works in the offices across the street from her site and is determined to catch his eye. Maybe even by using an app linked to her favorite TV show, "Hot Mess."
Hudson Parker is a friendly rival of Riley's. His company bids on a lot of the same jobs, his teams play hers in both baseball and bowling. He's always felt the underlying sexual tension between the two of them. But he's realizing that there might be even more to it. If only he can get her to look away from that other guy....
I heard about this on the the Smart Bitches, Trashy books podcast. I never really warmed to Riley but part of that might be my issues with first person.

Delightful! Riley Sinclair finally met the man of her dreams, however she can't keep her mind off of the bane of her existence. I am not a huge fan of romances but I found myself cheering for both the hero and heroine in this one. Ms. Bourne's writing style is refreshing and she has a knack for dialog. It never comes across as stilted or unrealistic. She does a great job of bringing her characters to life with humor and human frailties. I love when I can imagine seeing the story on the big screen. (Hint)

I've already started reading the next book in the series - Between a Honeymoon and a Hot Mess - and I am equally delighted. One of my biggest pet peeves with authors writing a series is that they often recycle the same two characters - just put them into a different story and change their names. Not Ms. Bourne. She gives distinct personalities to all of the characters in her books. Great job!

Riley and Hudson are business competitors, who are attracted to each other. Hudson pretends like it doesn't exist, and Riley covers it by pretending to hate him. But then... you can't pretend forever.

So I really like that this was a true romcom. Riley is your typical tomboy who doesn't think any man will see her as more than one of the guys, although she'd like one to. But not Hudson. Until he admits that he does. This book was funny, and super cute. I love that Hudson leaned right into wanting Riley. As soon as he got tired of the pretense he dropped it. And applied the pressure. I was rooting for Hudson. The introduction of Riley's mystery dream man and a love triangle situation wasn't my favorite, but it gave you a push of interest and drama so I guess it was okay. Also, Riley was sometimes a bit obnoxious and her insistence on reducing everything with Hudson to winning or losing was childish. Get it together. But I did love how they ended up, and I loved the story. It was very cute.

A sweet love story

Riley is a rough woman to love...or so she believes. As the head person of her families construction company, she’s used to working around men. So, dainty and lady like is not her style. But, if you want a plain speaking, hardworking and competitive woman, she’s got that in spades. And what she wants is to not think about her colleague, fine-ass Hudson.
Hudson likes everything about Riley. In particular her fiery attitude. But, when dealing with Riley, you can’t be too obvious. You need to be subtle with the wooing!
But, when Riley sets her sights on a preppy, office man, does fellow blue-collar Hudson even have a chance? How can he convince her to give him a chance?
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It was entertaining, funny and sexy. I can’t wait to read book 2 about Riley’s sister, Hope.

Riley Sinclair... A Hot Mess

Riley Sinclair gave a whole new meaning to hot mess. She was feisty, a super sports fanatic and quick witted. Her competitive nature was 100% all the time. While both her sister and best friend were engaged, Riley was alone and a little frustrated with her predicament. Hot Mess was a TV show she and the girls watched. Riley wanted to get a handsome rich man like the character on the show. Hudson Parker was the new man in town vying for the construction crown in softball and bowling. His team held both crowns once held by Sinclair construction. Riley planned to find a boo, get the trophy's back and live happily ever after... She was able to accomplish each of her goals, just not the way she'd envisioned the deal going down...

I have been on this black love kick lately. I had been reading too many psychological thrillers and i needed a change. Yall Between a Rock and a Hot Mess did it for me. It was a quick read and with two grown ass adults. I don't know how in the world I lived this long without reading a Phyllis Bourne book before last night.

I loved Riley Sinclair, there was nothing dainty about her. I'm not into frilly or prissy and she was neither. She spoke her mind and was bold and brash but in a good way. Hudson Parker has a thing for Riley and she can't stand him. But they have this undeniable chemistry. Lord that scene with Riley's dress in Hudson's office had my eyes stuck to my glasses. This was a 5 ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ read for me. About to download book two ASAP.

Riley Sinclair has began dating Ian King, the perfect man of her dreams or is he? He's an executive and a well cultured man. She also began a relationship with Hudson Parker, a rival construction company owner and they have more in common than ever. He falls in love with Riley and she is aware that her feelings are the same. When she agrees to a weekend getaway in NY with Ian and Hudson finds out, Riley has to make a decision between the two men. Her sister, Hope and their best friend, Plum are both engaged and planning their weddings. Will Riley join them in the promise of matrimony?

I gave The Sinclair Brides Book One a 4**** rating for a story well told.

Live, Laugh, And Love

Riley is so funny, loved her. Hudson is the right mate for her. Riley on the construction site, steel toe boot wearing, competitive sister looking for love. She cannot stand Hudson. You know the saying the more she complained about not liking him the more she realized she did. Hudson hard working sexy Alpha like to get under Riley's skin. Really fun story. Loved all the secondary characters. Riley's sister Hope, their honorary sister Plum and I cannot forget Hudson's niece Fiona. Sometime we think we know the type of man we want but is he the one that we need?

Between A Rock And A Hot Mess is my first book by Phyllis Bourne, and won’t be my last. Ms Bourne has delivered a book that is well-written and laugh out loud funny. Riley and Hudson’s story is in alternating point of view format, not my favorite, but it works well in this story. Their tale is packed with drama, action, humor and smokin’ hot sexy bits. I totally enjoyed this fun book and look forward to reading more from Ms Bourne in the future. Between A Rock And A Hot Mess is book 1 of The Sinclair Brides Series but can be read as a standalone. This is a complete book, not a cliff-hanger.

Quick and funny rom com

Between a Rock and a Hot mess is the first book of the Sinclaire series. Each story follows three friends with their own respective stories.

At first I was a little skeptical about this story but ended up enjoying it tremendously. Riley is in a word, a tomboy. She is viewed by all of the men of her company as one of the guys. She is tired of always being a bridesmaid and never s bride. On a drunken night alone, she does something brash, but somehow helpful in obtaining her perfect man.
Definitely recommend if you want a quick, light read.

-enjoy!

Still laughing over this one! Riley and Hudson compete in everything: business, sports , even love. Riley is the foreman of her family's construction company and Hudson is the owner of his. So while working in a man's world, Riley doesn't feel like a sexy woman most of the time. Her hard hat, torn jeans and work boots cause other people to see her as one of the "boys". But to continue dating 'pretty boy" Ian, because she looks good on his arm, was crazy to me and really hurt Hudson. These two are made for each other and it appears Riley is making the biggest mistake of her life! (eBook edition).

Take me out to the ball game with Riley and Hudson

Competitive, strong, determined, hardworking, all characteristics that make up the storyline and main characters Riley and Hudson. You'll appreciate the sub characters Plum and Ms. Priss, as they kept Riley balanced. You'll see how little Fiona, brings about togetherness for Caryn and Rob. Through it all the storyline shows how important it is to accept who you and not allow superficial things keep you away from your heart's desires of love.

Riley and Hudson
This was a quick, fun, read. I like that Riley isn't a girly girl and that Hudson enjoys her competitive spirit. The app aspect and focus on the "Hot Mess" show is dull and had me skimming the story. I focused mainly on the Hudson / Riley interactions. I'm not too keen on her dating two guys at the same time but really her "Dream guy" was just meh and a distraction from the real love story. And WOW, Hudson's sister Caryn is a piece of work that needs life to teach her a few lessons.

This book is a light read, with an interesting take on matters such as being true to who you are, what you like to do and being loved not only because of your unique beauty but because of the originally flawed aspects of your personality...and a makeover never hurts anybody as long as you stay true to yourself.

Her friends need a little bit of this in their life because its easy to tell they're gonna need all the help they can get from their friend...and probably will need a couple of books to solve their problems and the choices they have made.

A Must Read

If you are looking for a fast-paced humorous contemporary romance then this story is for you. I enjoyed this story so much! Phyllis Bourne's sense of humor comes through as Riley and Hudson's story developed. You are going to be blown away when you discover what the "hot mess " really means.
Great storyline and great side characters. Loved the HEA and the hint of the next heroine in Book 2. I recommend this book!
