1266 A.D. – Chadwick “Chad” de Lohr, son of Daniel de Lohr (SHADOWMOOR) is a hero at the Battle of Evesham. Saving the hostage Henry III from Simon de Montfort, he is riding high on a wave of royal praise at the conclusion of the battle. But that favor with the king his short-lived.
Henry, once again in power after the death of de Montfort, is determined to rid his country of the de Montfort-supporting rebels once and for all. This includes a campaign of harassment against the nobles who supported de Montfort through the years, namely, the House of de Shera (THE LORDS OF THUNDER TRILOGY). The House of the de Lohr and the House of de Shera are linked by blood, and when Henry orders that a de Shera heiress be removed from Rochester Abbey and placed in Henry’s custody as a hostage to ensure the House of de Shera behavior, Chad races to Rochester to remove his distant cousin from the abbey before Henry can take her hostage.
Chad’s noble act to save Alessandria de Shera is the first step in a chain of events that sees the House of de Lohr increasingly turned against the king. Determined to take Alessandria back to Cheshire where she will be protected by her warlord brother, it’s a race through England as Chad and Alessandria stay one step ahead of Henry’s men in their pursuit to capture her. Aided by Davyss de Winter (LESPADA) and Bose de Moray (THE GORGON), the journey of Chad and Alessandria takes them through life, death, great hardship, fear, and finally passion beyond what they could have ever imagined.
It’s an eventual showdown between Henry and the House of de Lohr once Chad and Alessandria are cornered. Will Henry finally claim Alessandria? Or will Chad ultimately defeat the man he once saved?

This story doesn’t have the darker tones I’m used to in author Kathryn Le Veque’s historical romance stories. In fact, there were many funny moments throughout the book—eye-rolling ones! This is not to say, it didn’t have the suspense or harsh reality of life which accompanies her usual works.
Close on the heels of success saving King Henry III from death at the battle of Evesham, Sir Chadwick de Lohr snatched Alessandria de Shea from the priory moments before the king’s men could. Would the King see this as defiance? Absolutely! King Henry had become unstable, seeing foe where there was none, doubting the loyalty of his closest men. Chad could not see kin used against kin, to twist a noble knight’s arm to surrender to the treachery of a king. King Henry meted out verdicts and punishment without reason. And Chad did what he felt was right.
Chad was a brilliant and infallible commander. He was also a man loyal to his family, even those who are related through marriage. Therefore, he had comrades and cousins in several great houses of the time.
It wasn’t his intention to fall for this small, beautiful woman. But fall he does. She’s a de Shera. If he were to marry her, the bond between her house and his would be further strengthened. He had great respect for her cousins, known as The Thunder Lords. But with King Henry on the rampage, endangered so many. More trouble, more hostility. Where would all of this end? Can King Henry go after all their houses? If he destroys them as he says he will, if he finds them disloyal, what knights are left to protect him? Foolish, foolish king!
I enjoyed a powerfully written scene when all comes to heads, knight against knight. Would everything unravel for these noble knights? A small soft-spoken voice catches the attention of a fully-angered king. These words come from Alessandria, a simple woman, who’d lived most of her life in a priory.
There are times where choices must be made. A man must choose what he feels is right. It appears love, family, and friendship are powerful weapons against a king’s commands. But never are issues just straight forward. By choosing a path you feel is right, you also affect those very people who mean so much to you.
With a light-hearted hero and simple, soft-spoken heroine, this story holds lots of deep emotions we can all identify with. I felt the love and respect the knights had for each other and the love of wives and children, even comrades-in-arms. Those of us who love reading of the wild times of this epoch, fear not, the author graces us with her keen senses and ability to show the danger, brutality and harshness.
I have yet to read any of this particular series. The author assures the reader each book of the series is a stand-alone. Indeed, this one is easily read and enjoyed. I highly recommend Ms. Le Veque's work. Whatever direction her pen leads her, she's brillant in the telling!
Where can I start on this one? . . . Yes, now I know. This was my first read by Kathryn Le Veque. I had the pleasure of getting to know a new author and her work. I have also found a set of series that I would like to know more about. I found characters that were: STRONG. LOYAL. TRUSTED. NOBEL. RECKLESS. SPIRITED. WITTY. LIVELY.
There were a whole host of characters to get involved with and drawn to. Chad was riding his high of victory and royal praise for a job well done. That was until the threat of family by the very man he assisted in saving changes everything. No king was more than family, family ties, family bonds, family loyalties. King Henry III makes a mistake that will turn the tides in his quest to rid 'his' kingdom of traitors. Or make them come to heel.
Lady Alessandria was the supposed key for King Henry to make his desires come true. If he could just get his hand on the lady all will be alright. I guess the king did not count on family ties, loyalties, bonds to be than duty to a king. Silly man. I found her to be more than your typical lady. She even had a few moments of humor.
Historical romance, intrigue, action & adventure, with family, friends, foes, and plots of revenge, tales of passion, and test of loyalties makes for a fantastic read. I just wish that I did not feel lost or confused with aspects of this one. I usually do not step into the middle of a series this far but I did this time. Book 7 of the series usually has lots of history to go with it. This turns out to attract a new reader not repel me. I want to know more of this medieval drama with its test of family, loyalty, passion running through its veins.
Sorry if you were looking for juicy bits and pieces of the story to be dropped. That not what I do. I give you what I thought and maybe some clue as to what the character, plots, pacing, and all that jazz a like. But no secrets. You will get a whole cast of very interesting, consuming, alluring, intriguing characters. This medieval jaunt across England makes for a very good read. If you have the time and desire to, make a weekend of getting to know the whole series or better yet a month to know all the connecting series. **This ARC was provided via Aurora Publicity in exchange for an honest review.**
Sir Chadwick "Chad" de Lohr and Lady Alessandria "Aless" de Shera are two amazing characters. Silversword is classic Le Veque.
I could not put Silversword down last night. I loved it!!! What a story. It had an extraordinary message of how powerful the bonds of brotherhood, Love and true friendship can truly be. Also, you could feel how loving family ties can become so strong that they can overcome what is thrown their way. I was so touched by the sacrifices the characters were all willing to make for one another. The story really touched my soul with the powerful messages involved in this story.
The LOL moments were amazing just as well. From Chad's displays when he is drunk to Aless having her own sense of humor, deep down, which surprised me. Wow!
Also, something that also really touched me was the honor this author bestowed upon two of her greatest knights, - Christopher and David de Lohr and their wives Dustin and Emilie. Such love and respect was given to the scene she wrote about them that it gave me, the reader, a perfect visual and effect. It touched me so very deeply. Having read everything this author has written so far, I truly felt all of the emotion she was trying to convey in my heart. I want to thank her for that. She truly bestowed upon these famous knights and their love stories, the honor and respect they rightfully deserved.
This author gave me a gift that touched my heart... it reinforced my belief that true Love and family ties can conquer everything. I love this author's stories and I will always remember Silversword. It is a keeper for me! Bravo and well done!
The House of de Lohr, the House of de Moray, the House of de Winter, the House of de Shera - the most powerful Houses England has ever seen are suddenly in great jeopardy in this powerful novel.
The book begins at the conclusion of the Battle of Evesham, where Simon du Montfort has been brutally murdered during the battle and Henry III has been freed and restored as the King of England. While many of these great Houses found themselves on opposite sides during the war, they never failed in maintaining their loyalty to each other as many were close friends before the war and had family members who had crossed family Houses to marry within each House. For example, in the story Sir Bose de Moray's ("The Gorgon") daughter had married Tiberius de Shera ("The Thunder Knight"). Sir Bose de Moray was once the Captain of the Guard for King Henry III and still remains loyal to him. Whereas, Sir Tiberius de Shera and his brothers (The Thunder Lords) followed Simon du Montfort in his rebellion against King Henry.
At the conclusion of the war, King Henry, who isn't the most stable guy here to begin with, has his mind set on vengeance against any and all Houses who sided with Simon du Montfort and fought against his rule. He wants his vengeance at any cost and sets out in his madness to bring down, once and for all, the House of de Shera aka The Thunder Lords. He knows that other great Houses, on both sides, are related to the de Sheras and he thinks to test their loyalties as well.
On the surface it starts as a simple matter to Henry, especially when an opportunity presents itself as he discovers that Lady Alessandria de Shera is residing in a convent with a cloister of nuns. He thinks to snatch her, use her as a hostage and force the de Sheras to their knees with a threat of harm to one of their family members. Sir Bose de Moray is at Henry's side when this plan is hatched. Sir Bose personally delivers the information to the only knight still left in London after the battle who he knows: (1) is friends with and loyal to the de Sheras; and (2) will drop all and jump in to stop this travesty. Enter our hero, Sir Chad de Lohr.
What starts out as a simple, get the girl out of harms way, hide her from the evil empire and go about my way, ends up being far from simple and far from easy. It is the beginning of an adventure with some very amusing moments. It is the beginning a sweet and forever kind of love story. It is the beginning of what could be the end of either a kingdom or the end of several great Houses.
This was SO good! There were times when I just couldn't see anyway out of the mess the King's mad scheme of vengeance had begun. The situation, tension, angst and conflict among the people involved appeared to be getting more out of control as more Houses began to be drawn in and it was looking like it just wouldn't end up good for anyone involved. I was a nervous wreck as more familiar and beloved characters from other books were joining in. Davyss de Winter ("Lespada"), Daniel de Lohr ("Shadowmoor"), Bose de Moray ("The Gorgon") Gallus de Shera ("Lord of Thunder"), Maximus de Shera ("The Thunder Warrior"), Tiberius de Shera ("The Thunder Knight") and Curtis de Lohr, no book yet, but eldest son of the great Christopher de Lohr ("Rise of the Defender") all played huge parts in this fantastic book. And, the final showdown? Oh my!
It was wonderful to visit with so many familiar and well-loved characters from other books. While the tension was building to what might be the biggest battle England had ever witnessed, with some of the greatest, most respected and honorable warriors of the day, there was that sweet love story that was at the heart of this excellent book. You never lost sight of the two principal characters and their growing admiration for each other. While it seemed the world around them was going completely mad, their story was still the main theme throughout, front and center, with some lovely, tender moments and some hysterical, light hearted times.
I have been anticipating this book from Ms. Kathryn Le Veque for quite a while. It’s funny that I say that because with any of her books I always seem to say that no matter what it is about. Plus, Ms. Le Veque is an author I truly admire and absolutely love most of her stories. Lately it seemed she was pushing the envelope and getting away from what I loved previously about her stories with the last two books that I have read from her. I am not saying both of them was not good but this book confirmed why I fell in love with her type of stories in the first place; the amazing non-stop action, a king who is also a villain you want to follow but also hate, battle, deception, vengeance, family loyalty, true chivalrous honest loyal knights to their very core and a love between the male/female protagonist that you can’t help but get swept up in all of it. Especially when Ms. Le Veque seemingly channels her older books that had her classic style that I have instantly loved and could barely put down because this book pretty much does that. Chadwick “Chad” de Lohr famous son of Daniel de Lohr fresh from the battle of Evesham saves King Henry while witnessing the gruesome horrendous murder of friends and Simon de Montefort is celebrating the victory. Unfortunately this success is short lived and while at a tavern getting drunk with some of his family hears from a trusted knight and friend that Henry is planning to wipe out all of de Montefort supporters including the famed lords of thunder known as the house of de Shera. In all of this mess is a woman Alessandria “Aless” de Shera cousin to the famous lords that King Henry has devious plans to take her hostage from Newington priory where she has been living in obscurity since being placed there by her family. Chad’s plan is to take Aless away from the evil clutches of Henry and place her in the lords of thunder’s safe keeping. Can Chad also avoid his strong attraction to Aless and can he give her up so easily when he feels something so strongly for her. I totally loved the fun loving handsome knightly hero Chad. Okay I loved the fact that he wasn’t so stiff upper lipped especially when he got drunk which you wouldn’t expect that from a normally staid knight. I guess in a sense I have this holier than thou ideal of them and they almost seem too perfect for words or maybe since I have read so many books about them they are supposed to be like this. Chad just broke the mold for all of this. I was a little frightened though that Aless would follow the classic Stockholm syndrome victim acting hopelessly devoted in love with the hero which gets a little old and seems to be a commonality in romance novels. I was glad not to see that from her. Aless yes she was naïve, innocent and ignorant of the political shenanigans of all these great knights and an even worse king but Aless could stand her ground making me like and respect her. I guess the one thing I wanted was for someone to slap the King because I think he deserved it. In classic Ms. Le Veque style she also brings back characters from previous books and this one had several from Bose de Moray the gorgon, Gallus, Maximus, Tiberius from the lords of thunder trilogy, Daniel de Lohr from shadowmoor and my favorite was Davyss de Winter from Lespada between all of these wonderful great knights each had a story to celebrate but can stand alone there are also a host of new minor characters to love and I hope they will get a story someday too. Even though I have finished this book I think that I am not ready to leave this world yet so I in the process of rereading this book again. I do highly recommend it and will definitely get more books from Ms. Le Veque!
I already love Kathryn le Veques books and since Christopher de Lohr was the one that had me hooked I knew that his great nephew, Chad had my heart, too. This book had me laughing at the beginning, on edge during parts, and still laughing throughout Kathryn le Veques style of story telling is just ..I can't come up with words that are expressing how she makes me feel when reading her books they're just so good you can feel how each of the characters are you will be going with them as you read Kathryn le Veques medieval books are so entertaining, serious, and thrown in... romance. If just buying this book I can guarantee that you will end up falling in love with the medieval era through Kathryn le Veques writings and get all her books and once getting them be waiting on her next book eagerly... Love Chad and Alessandra (Aless)
I had just finished reading Shadowmore with Daniel deLohr and was very excited to read Silversword "Chadwick deLohr's story. To me this is classic LeVeque with but a lighter version! I throughly loved Chad and Aless's story. It was fun, humorous and just a captivating story. He one thing I love about Kathryn LeVeque novels is that I can always count on the fact that I will see my favorite characters from her other stories in each book! I love to be able to read a story and know the other characters and to also meet new ones. If you have never read Kathryn LeVeque I would highly recommend this or any of her novels!!
What a fantastic novel! You have the love story of Aless and Chad, the great houses at war with each other, a mad King and a scramble to fill in the power structure, and so much more! Good to see old friends and to be introduced to the new knights -- Henry's six. Silversword is one of the best!
Another Le Veque book that I read cover to cover in one sitting. She has quite a talent for making it all feel real. Looking forward to her next book already. All of her books can stand alone, but I think this book would be understood better if you read related works. Especially due to the characters discussed in this book. Enjoy.
I love the main male character, Chad, in this book. Such a free spirit, yet committed to his knightly responsibilities and honor. He is sent to take Alessandra deShara from a convent to protect her from King John who wants to use her as a hostage to make her cousins, the Lords of Thunder to bow to him and swear fealty to him. That is where their story begins and it is a sweet one. Alessandra has lived at the convent for many years and is naive to the ways of the world outside. She quickly learns what she has been missing. My complaint about this series is the order of the books. I did not read them in the order listed because it didn’t make sense. The series starts with While angels slept which in small part introduces the parents of Christopher and David deLohr. Then book 2 and 3 tell the story of Christopher and David respectively. That’s when it gets weird to me. Book 4 is about Daniel, Davids son followed by his son Chad in book 5. Then the series goes back in time to cover Gart and then Rhys and Rhys’ son Maddoc in books 6, 7 and 8. The timing just didn’t make sense. I read 6, 7, and 8 before I read 4 and 5 and everything flowed. If you read book 8 before you read book 4, that story will make a lot more sense. One other thing, I also don’t understand why Christopher’s sons’ stories are not included in the deLohr Dynasty series. I would like to read their stories.
This is a tale of Brothers in Arms, Camaraderie and loyalty. A story of honour, fealty and truth. But in the middle of this game of politics is an endearing and passionate love story. Sir Chad is the grandson of David de Lohr, handsome, very likeable with a great sense of humour, a free spirit, with a glorious arse! He is sent on a mission of mercy and this is where the adventure begins. He meets the beautiful and naive Lady Alessandria de Shera and becomes smitten. Alessandria has had an awful beginning, let down by her father and brother and left to fend for herself at a Convent, she is unprepared for the journey that lies ahead, but Sir Chad is there to save and love her. She has a wonderful sense of humour and lovely character and soon discovers the warmth and kindness from a family she never knew. All the great characters are in this romantic tale, The Lords of Thunder - Gallus, Maximus and Tiberius de Shera and their wives, The de Lohr's, du Moray, De Serreaux, Davyss and all these wonderful men add to this compelling tale. Kathryn always brings these families and characters to life and this book is no different. Extremely Enjoyable.
Temanya jadi Damsel in distress and the knight on white horse 😅 LOL
I have submitted this review after listening to the audiobook of this title.
We saw the birth of Chadwick in the previous episode of "Shadowmoor", now he is a man grown, and living with his father Daniel, now Earl of Canterbury. There had been a devastating battle, in which the King had been free from a 12 month capture and his forces prevailed. However, the great warlords were divided, due to the poor rule of their monarch, and the new idea of people having a say in their own country's governess. As each house was now, through many inter house marriages, the lines between allegiance to family and King, has now blurred. This is what occurs when, the now bitter and vengeful king, decides to eradicate one of the great houses. It is a tale worth telling, and one that shows how family is top priority to these generations of warlords.
Another great read from Kathryn Le Veque! She is the master of the Medieval romance. This series has just flown by with successive generations of characters from the start of the series. I loved Alessandria and Chad, and it was a compelling culmination of the houses of de Lohr, de Shera, de Moray and others. The story was riveting and the characters dynamic. Two aspects slightly bothered me...I would have liked more physical heat between the main characters and less of the silly drunken antics of Chad. It took away from his appeal as a Knight of honor and intelligence. Otherwise, I very much enjoyed this entire series and hope that there will be more to come!
Sometimes I wonder if this author is really so good or if she pays people to review her books. So far all the books I’ve gotten from her have failed to catch my attention. My problem with this book now is that the beginning was filled with so many names. Sure it’s book 8 and different characters mist have been introduced from the beginning- still is she saying only people who have followed the series from the start should read it?
Anyway, while chad was quite easy to like, the heroine wasn’t at first. It was a bit hard to tell her true character since her thoughts made her seem a sweet person but her actions made her a bit shrewd.
The book had some funny elements, I’ll give it that.
A very interesting story about a man who took a young woman from the nuns before some knights had a chance to get her. The king was a little mad he wanted to keep some of his people in line. I give this story a four star rating because it is a every interesting story anyone who loves yo read about this time.
The stories are getting a little more predictable and the plots are becoming more similar. Le Veque has an earlier story where the main female role also was in a priory and she is taken by force by the main character to date e her from someone and he fall in love with her. Maybe I have read too many of these books.
Great story of intrigue and diplomacy, brotherhood and friendship, love and war. Some funny scenes interspersed with potentially deadly events. Great characters and the coming together of some of Ms. Le. Veque’s greatest knights in a very tense period of time.
A paranoid king decides to take a young lady hostage. Her ties to major houses would give him the advantage of control, only one young knight gets to her first and takes her away to his family holdings. They fall in love very quickly, but will Henry tear them apart?.... will it be more war?....or will it be peace?
It was a pleasure reading this book. So many twists and turns it was not easy keeping everyone together. The book was enjoyable even though it took a while to keep it all together. All Kathryn’s books are enjoyable . Have not found one that I did not finish and enjoyed. Loved it!
Chad de Lohr son of Daniel and Liselotte has just returned from battle. He is told that the king wants Alessandria who is a cousin of the de Shera family who are against the kings ways. He rushes to the convent where she resides and takes her away. During their travels they fall in love with each other but there are obstacles in their way.
A wonderful story great characters. A true band of brothers and friendships that can't be broken. ~Kathryn Le Veque is truly gifted with her story writing. None are ever the same and always so exciting full of battles, friendships and romance. you have to keep going to the end.
Very political boring at times trying to sort out all the families. Loved Chad as a angry infant, intense warrior and carefree buttock baring drunk. Glad to see him grow into the steadfast husband the de Lohr men always are. Lucky woman!
Wow! What one slip of a naive girl can do to bring about a ferocious sense of familial loyalty and a clash of dynasties almost strong enough to bring down the paranoid King of England makes for a truly amazing story! Just read! Love these families of knights!!!
Wonderful storyline. Love the characters a lot. There is one sex scene, but it is more a fade out kind. There is crude humor when the main character gets drunk but it is not offensive. Well worth reading.
Medieval times with Henry III and the Montfort fight. Political intrigue and questioned loyalties lead to tense situations. A few very implausible sections, grammar errors, etc
