It seems to be a mystery why Lady Constance Hatton is still not married. She has beauty, a generous dowry, and an impressive family name to recommend her. Her mother fears Constance will soon--gasp!--be relegated to the shelf. However, Lady Constance is in no hurry to wed. She has exacting requirements for a husband and intends to marry only when she finds the perfect gentleman-one that is worthy. She delights in her ability to control her own destiny. Until an encounter with a shadowy emigre, that is. Constance is certain that she can gracefully extricate herself from an unwanted engagement, while at the same time find a suitable mate for her friend and protect her innocent maid from the wiles of a sophisticated Frenchman. But can she protect her own heart from the attractions of her mysterious fiancé?
this is a very well written, sweet/clean regency with an amusing "I" narrator. My only wish was for another incident, or two, between hero and heroine. Want to read "A Sensible Lady".
I’m so glad I discovered Judith Lown from one of the reviews I read. Clean (no gratuitous sex) with just the right amount of romance. I hope she would write another book.
I must admit I was not entirely looking forward to reading this book based on the cover. Imagine my surprise to find that it is a well written, appropriately paced interesting story. The characters are well matched and their romance is just a wonderful read. Even though I usually prefer sexier romance novel, my interest was captured from the very first pages and maintained till the happy ending.
This was actually really great. There were quite a few funny moments that built up the story and characters. I would actually reread and not get bored.
The only reason this isn't one of my favorites now is because it was too short.
O God. Lady Constance was always constantly misunderstanding situations. She thinks she is clever. Yet, throughout the book I was unable to witness her so called cleverness.
Her match is the French man, Blaise, Lord something. But he never really seemed to be there. Instead of being cast as a main character he should stayed away as an outlier.
The plot was good but the many misunderstandings could have been settled easily by communicating with each other. It was lovely how some of the secondary characters did end up with someone.
If you like the regency era, this is the book for you. I am seriously loving my Kindle Unlimited subscription. I get to "borrow" books for free....up to 10 at a time. This was one of the books available and I loved it. I wish Goodreads would allow half stars. I would have given this a 3.5.
A terrific traditional Regency with a twist to the plot and an engaging heroine. Well written with deftly drawn characters. Lighter and frothier than A Sensible Lady, but most enjoyable.
