We are Caroline Peckham and Susanne Valenti, sisters and best selling co-authors of all things dark romance - fantasy and contemporary, M/F and RHs, there’s something for everyone, as long as you love characters who will break your heart, stomp on it and laugh over the pieces before putting them all back together in the end. We live in the South East of England, kinda near London but far enough out to be able to look at fields all wistfully and shit if the mood takes us. We work together from our countryside office through the week, writing down most of the madness that exists in our heads on paper, so that you can come and escape to our imaginary worlds for a little bit too. We don’t shy away from twisted cliffhangers, and love an Alpha asshole, but our leading women are of the badass, take no shit lying down variety, so it’s always a rollercoaster of a ride. We can’t wait for you to buckle up with us!
Holy. Cannoli. So much went down in this book! With Coal back everything is right again as we’re back to the usual. Ya know, running into the face of danger time and time again but with that good ol’ fire in the belly and determination to live through it. Chained piqued my interest, Linked took me prisoner, Broken made me rebellious, and now Bound has me jumping in my chair desperately needing to read the series finale.
Bound swings open running and knocking down anything in its path as it charges right up to the cusp of the series’ climax and then stumbles its toes hanging over the edge of a cliff leaving us to hang until the next and final book rescues us with its conclusion. A dystopian series that nudges us on a year-long journey then tosses us down an ever undulating current of twists and turns we are finally deposited at a door and if we dare to open it, the ending will rush us until we fall. The Cage of Lies series is not one you’ll want to miss.
This series is taking far longer and more money than it may be worth.
A meandering story that bounces from cliffhanger to cliffhanger and squeezes every dollar the author thinks she can take from readers. If I had known the price of the tale up front, I doubt that I would have started the journey. Lots of fight scenes, haphazard romance, much drama that feels like filler. I will not stay on this merry-go-round much longer.
Told mainly from Mayas POV. Characters are likely and storyline is good. I felt this book dragged a little but was glad Cole was back. This ends on a cliffhanger which I hate. I thought this was the last book but its not. So not happy about that. Clean read. Recommended
Loved this book! Definitely gets even better, which I didn’t think possible, with each new chapter. Nonstop action, danger, and romance - definitely an awesome read!!!
If you like Apocalyptic/Dystopian/Survival stories with strong characters and plots and twists that keep you guessing and glued throughout, give this series a chance! The author is super talented!!
Love this series!!!! I seriously read this book in one day because I couldn't put it down. I cannot wait to read book 5 and see what happens to my favorite crew.
I cannot put the books in this series down!!! They are action packed and you just love all the characters and want to see what they do next! It would be nice if this series just never ended!
Love this series but come on! I really really hate cliff hangers like this! I binge read all the books in this series not realizing there is still lord knows how many more that have not been released. I hate waiting! 4 stars is for the abysmal cliff hanger that leaves you going really? Your seriously ending there?

Sooo... I loved this book! I decided not to take any more review requests this month because of my finals next month but I think Susanne is an exception for me, mainly because I love this series so much! So, of course I couldn't say no when she asked me about this book. You can read my reviews for the previous books in this series here.
*Do not proceed if you haven't read book 3 or 3.5 because of possible spoilers.*
Bound picked up from the very point where Broken left off. Maya is overjoyed to find Coal alive but they are both prisoners to the wardens. They devise a plan to escape but numerous hurdles keep coming their way. Will they be able to escape? Even if they did, will they be able to face what lied ahead?
One of the things that I like most about Susanne's writing is how she depicts her action sequences. They are detailed and vividly portrayed, they manage to produce a cinematic effect in my mind which makes those scenes throughly entertaining. We get to see a lot of action in this book, Maya trying to find a way to escape, their ultimate face off with the creepers and various other situations as well. They were perfectly executed. But it did feel it was a bit dragging in the middle section of the book, otherwise I have no complains. I especially liked the face off between the girls and the men at the camp, it was totally fun and the girls kicked their asses! I was glad to see a conclusion with the creepers as well, atleast I think that was a conclusion... or not? Oh well, have to read the next book to find out.
The characters were as awsome as ever! I love Maya's character. She is brave, strong and a kickass protagonist. I loved that she cared about each and every one of her friends. I was so glad to have Coal back but I don't know, I felt a little disconnected with him. But nonetheless I loved their romance. They had so much catching up to do... And is there something brewing between Alicia and Taylor? Oh, I definitely hope so!! As usual, I completely loved Alicia, she is fiercely loyal and a great friend. Surprisingly, I liked Taylor as well, not that I hated him but I was glad he understood his actual feelings. There were so many great moments in this book, though some nearly gave me a heart attack. Nonetheless, I was satisfied.
Overall, Bound was another great read in the Cage of Lies series. The plot was neatly executed and the I loved all the characters. Well except those creepy creepers, not that they count as characters anyway! The writing was simple and easy to read and the pace was fast throughout the book. I can't believe there's only one more book left, I seriously can't wait to read the stunning conclusion to this series!

Spoiler warning: It’s advised not to read this review unless you’ve read the books prior to this (it is book 4, so that kind of goes without saying)
And the plot thickens! Bound is the fourth instalment in the Cage of Lies series and I’ll say this now: this series is just getting better every time I come back to it. We pick up right about where the third (also the short novella Embers) ended so we don’t miss anything.
At the beginning we meet up with Maya and Coal and they’re still in that cell but we don’t care because they’re together and that’s kind of the important thing here…for the moment. Maya and Coal make such an amazing team, it’s like back in the beginning stages of the series when we saw Coal and Alicia fighting: so much grace, so in sync. Also, the fact that Gregor almost pissed his pants because he knows- he knows– that with those two together, he can’t win (hell, he can’t win with them one on one) made me cackle with glee. I still hate Gregor. Nothing will make me like him.
Characters: I honestly can’t say whether I prefer this Maya or ruthless Maya. Ruthless Maya being the one in which Coal is dead. She wasn’t as dependant as she was before so I think she’s a lot better now. Granted the AWOL-ness she possesses hasn’t gone away but it can be dealt with.
Coal, my precious, my love. He can do no wrong. He is amazing in every sense of the word. Perfection right there.
Alicia is so untrustworthy. I’d say it’s understandable because guys are always approaching her but she’s making that all they’re capable of. She’s still badass, that’s no argument though but I think with her only trusting 3 people when there’s so many other people she has to count on to have her back, it’s kind of ridiculous.
Taylor is an idiot. There was never a great like for him in the beginning and with every new stupid thing he tries, the scale leans towards dislike. He changes constantly from nice guy to a**hole. Crystal is still a nuisance but she’s more or less faded into the group now.
Hunter/Laurie/Blane/Luca/Lee: all of these people are amazing and I honestly think they make a great team. Of course they each have their own individual qualities that help make this story great.
Likes: I liked how this book focused more on the creepers. The warden story wasn’t getting old but a change is always welcome. WARRIORS! That’s what the group is called now and I love it so much! There are absolutely no dislikes.
Overall Thoughts: I didn’t like this as much as the other books but not for any specific reason. I just felt this was more a 4-4.5 star book than a 5 star. The plot as well as the pace was excellent. As always amazing written action scenes. I legit can’t wait for the next book. Next stop: the city. Bring. It. On!
This book is not standalone and if you are not caught up with the series then you are in for some serious spoilers if you read this out of turn.
29552324So I will admit I have been waiting for this book after the mind blowing cliff hanger of book 3. (I still need to get caught up with Embers which I believe fits in between 3 and 4) Once again it was action packed and filled with danger. The story picks up right where the last leaves off. Maya has found Coal alive, but now they need to find a way to escape from Warden custody. The rest of the group has reached Madison, only to realize that Maya is missing. Alicia and Taylor go back for her, while the others plan to defend against the advancing Wardens. Along the way Livi has discovered a backdoor into Warden tech that allows her to hack into their systems. Suddenly, infiltrating The City to free Maya’s parents is viable plan once again.
Though I have to admit I was as antsy as Maya during their enforced wait for Livi, this book still delivered the action in a big way with quick paced and raw action that pushed boundaries. The girls versus boys showdown bordered on hilarity while the escape from and final battle with the creepers was breathtaking.
There weren’t many new characters, however this team of characters have added facets. Alicia and Hunter aren’t so unapproachable anymore, Maya seems to be settling down, Crystal still seems like a loose end and Coal is as unreadable as ever, but then he has just been through hell.
One would think that by now I would be used the instant ending cliffhanger, but I have to admit it got me again. I tried turning the page several times before I realized that once again the story is over. I am looking forward to the next book. I am dying to meet Maya’s parents!

Bound is the fourth book in the Cage of Lies series, and continues the story Maya and Coal and the rest of their friends continuing their journey to take down Harbour City. Everyone has regrouped at Lee’s mines after taking care of the Wardens. They hang around in the mines waiting for Livi to find them a way in, are attacked by Creepers, have fights with Lee’s crew, you know, the usual thing. Finally they set out for Harbour City…
Oh so much happens in this book, the group goes skinny dipping and get attacked by a giant fish, the women in Lee’s camp are seriously jealous of Maya, Alicia and Crystal and they kick some serious heinie to get some respect. And then, thank god, they start heading off to Harbour City, but not after making contact with Taylor’s dad before heading there. It’s all so exciting, you can almost taste the end result!
One other thing I’m really digging is the vibe between Taylor and Alicia, they are so gonna get it on! I really didn’t like the thing between Taylor and Crystal, I mean really Taylor? I can’t say I dug Maya’s attitude either while they were at Lee’s camp. It was slow going and they were there for a while so it did seem, even for the reader, a bit frustrating and “can’t we just get a move on”? So I can kinda understand, if I’m frustrated, she must be frustrated too, but ugh running away and not telling people where you’re going where there are Creepers everywhere? Stupid, selfish girl.
Anyway, this was a great addition to the series and it was such a cliffhanger at the end, I can’t wait for the next one to come out already! If you have been reading along and have read the other books so far then it’s definitely worth keeping it going and reading this book too.
This was a free arc given to me by the author in exchange for an honest review and does not affect my opinion of it.
It took a while for me to get the ball rolling with this book. At the end of Broken, Maya was captured and taken back to the city. She’s thrown in a cell and, lo and behold who does she find? *SPOILER ALERT* it’s Coal. Which, admittedly, was kind of nice. Finally something going right for Maya, but their reunion came with sex scenes that are just so out of place in the context, it made me cringe a bit.
Once Coal and Maya escape their prison, you can see the premise of the book being a bit of a filler, to give Livi (the tech genius) an opportunity to discreetly hack into the city’s computer system and formulate a plan to find Maya’s parents.
It was a bit slow at times, but I liked that it tied up a few loose ends. Most importantly, the Creeper King who seems to be following them across the country. The fight scene was dramatic, epic, exciting and finally put that storyline to rest. And there was finally a definitive answer about Taylor/Alicia. It was nice to see them have a good, fairly mature conversation about whether or not something was going to happen between them. Taylor respected what Alicia said and it actually made me like him a little bit.
As nice and satisfying it was to read in terms of the characters finally having a moment to just chill, it really was a filler; they are all finding ways to pass the time until they are ready to break into the city. Unless you’re truly invested in the story and characters, it won’t hold your interest for too long. I, for one, am excited to see how the saga concludes in Free.
The book continues Maya's endeavour to free her parents. Now that she has found Coal, they have to reunite with their friends. I will not tell you more about the story than shown in the Goodreads plot description. This would spoil the fun of reading this book yourself.
With Bound, Susanne Valenti has created a compelling and cleverly elaborated fourth book in the Cage of Lies series. Maya and her friends/allies have to fight against their old foes - as usual it is a matter of life or death. I was drawn into the story right away - as an invisible ally. Susanne Valenti tells the story in a clever way - giving the reader the opportunity to be very close; she expertly elaborates her characters' personal growth and paints a clear picture of the situations they find themselves in. As the story proceeds you learn more about the old and new protagonists and the world they live in. There are some real surprises, finding their way nicely into your perception of the story. I had a great time reading Bound.
This is a book for you if you appreciate a pretty stubborn protagonist (always in for a fight) in an interesting combination of the science-fiction, young adult, and dystopian genres, and romance. It is not hard-core science fiction.
***DO NOT READ UNLESS YOU HAVE READ THE PREVIOUS BOOKS***
I gave this installment to The Cage of Lies series 4/5 stars. While I still loved the story and characters I felt like it was a little slow at the get-go. I enjoyed their journey and I enjoyed the ending (Valenti is great at leaving you with a cliffhanger!) but I wasn’t crazy about the gang staying so long with Lee’s mine-folk. I felt just as restless as Maya and the gang. I just wanted them to be proactive and to be in the city all ready!
I thought the fight between the mine-women and the girls of the gang comical! They didn’t have a prayer. But I also thought that part in particular was a little long.
But I loved the rest of their journey. I enjoyed the end of the Creeper King, the killer catfish in the lake, Taylor’s Dad being saved by Livi, etc.
I still love all the characters. Although Blane’s character made my heartache throughout the entire book. I just wanted Jayden to show up, safe and sound. But I know he didn’t have the same happy ending as Coal.
I like the character's they have real warmth and personalities, not all get on with each other, but that's a true reflection on life. The series will appeal to anyone who enjoys the dystopian genre I looked forward to reading more.
I really enjoyed this story! It was like the first one with the tension, fast-pace and idea of the City. This place reminds me of George Orwell's place in his novel, 1994. There were times I felt the characters acted a little too quickly and they didn't seem too surprised by the events. But, I did enjoy it. I'm glad I read it. And, I'm glad the promise of Maya's parents is being fulfilled. Dare I say that? It's been left on a cliffhanger once again! 4 and a half stars.

The action remains high as the series gallops ahead in the fourth installment of the Cage of Lies Saga. Like all the other books in the series, I simply could not put this book down. I absolutely love to see how the numerous characters change and develop, as well as their various relationships to each other. The romance continues strong, but never gets boring, and the plot continues to twist and turn. I simply cannot wait for the fifth and final book to be released!
