Héroe de la Primera Guerra Mundial, piloto personal de Lawrence de Arabia y compañero de escuadrilla del mítico Roland Garros, su afán aventurero le llevó a internarse, en 1937, en el corazón de la Guayana venezolana en busca de oro y allí descubrir uno de los parajes más hermosos del planeta y que desde entonces lleva su nombre: el Salto del Ángel. É um bom livro de aventuras - aventuras que aconteceram realmente, embora pareçam por vezes inacreditáveis.
A escrita não é má, mas não conseguiu transportar-me para os locais fantásticos onde decorre a maior parte da história - ou então é o meu cérebro que anda demasiado cansado para os visualizar a partir das descrições que li...
De qualquer modo, foi uma leitura agradável e com o interesse acrescido de se tratar duma história verídica, embora ficcionada.

Un libro de aventuras de los buenos, de los de toda la vida.
Una historia que desconocía sobre el descubrimiento (y el descubridor) del Salto del Ángel.
Personajes con mucho carisma, aventuras, supervivencia, tesoros, inicios de la aviación... El libro tiene un poco de todo y se lee muy fácil, es muy disfrutón.

Драгоценность.
Казалось бы, подвиг, казалось бы, великое достижение, казалось бы, судьба-злодейка, опять же, казалось бы, книга должна вдохновлять, пугать, ты должен чувствовать и радость, и отчаяние, но тут почему-то как со Стариком и его романами, все есть, а драмы нет.
Я не к тому, что книга должна быть тяжелой, особенно если рассказывает об открытиях и забытых людях. Нет, просто она должна быть настоящей, что ли, чтобы не казалось, что ее выдумали или приукрасили. Хочется проникнуть в героя, понять, как ему было больно от потери друга или совершенно необыкновенно, упоительно, от того, что под ним такие невероятные просторы, в которые нельзя не влюбиться. Я читала с интересом, но героев не чувствовала. Я скорее понимала про что читаю, понимала, как это важно и нужно, запоминала, проверяла, интересовалась фактами, но это я, я люблю узнавать новое, я люблю истории людей, знаете есть определенные люди, которые могут читать биографии и мемуары и им не скучно, ну вот я из таких, но точно знаю, что таких немного. И поэтому сильно прискорбно, что книга не втягивает в себя, не влюбляет в просторы и людей, чтобы другим читателям стало интересно, чтобы они взяли еще одну и еще одну книгу, про это место, про этих людей, да хоть литературой Венесуэлы заинтересовались. И что печально, это ведь литература о настоящих и красивых людях, о самых необычных ситуациях. Книжка как присказка и тебе хочется ту книгу, сказку, что должна быть впереди, а ее - нет.
Но это, конечно, не отменяет невероятного, что описано в книге, и приятного знакомства с людьми и историей такого немаленького открытия как водопада имени Джеймса Эйнджела. И пусть человек искал совсем не это открытие и действительно как и предсказывала героиня:
В книге есть красивые отношения и ситуации, которые много дарят читателю. Понимание невероятной дружбы, понимания, как важна поддержка, как хорошо что-то творить, когда за тобой тыл, а не пустота и ругань. Как не важно, что алмазы все еще в земле, если рядом драгоценнишие люди и ты делаешь именно то, что любишь.
Книга хороша, жаль, что она все же чуточку не настоящая, чуточку слишком проста, чуточку пуста.

...в будущем они станут называть его не водопадом Джимми Эйнджела, а «водопадом Ангела», чтобы таким образом твоя слава растворилась., но водопад падает со своих 979 метров превращаясь в туман и история его открытия остается все такой же даруя бессмертие, к которому тоже не стремился Король Неба, он просто делал то, что любил и умел, а еще так желал обеспечить себя и любимую будущим. И продлить память, подарить хоть кроху знания - с этим книга справилась. Пусть ты не почувствовал всего, что пришлось испытать героям этой истории, не понял всего невозможного и невероятной удачи, но ты узнал их имена, а мы ведь знаем, что человек умирает лишь тогда, когда его имя забывают.
В книге есть красивые отношения и ситуации, которые много дарят читателю. Понимание невероятной дружбы, понимания, как важна поддержка, как хорошо что-то творить, когда за тобой тыл, а не пустота и ругань. Una emocionante historia de cómo un piloto descubre entre los tepuyes venezolanos lo que ahora es "Salto el Angel". Describiendo con bastante perfección los paisajes venezolanos y todos los hechos que se ignoran en el simple descubrimiento de la catarata más alta del mundo.
Aunque comienza algo lento y exagerademente descriptivo, todo va tomando forma con cada capítulo hasta que te envuelve en la completa aventura de la historia.

Well worth four stars. A gripping yarn that rarely lets up on the tension, putting its protagonists into life-threatening predicaments in the skies and on the ground of the beautiful but inhospitable southern reaches of Venezuela. It's very much a novel of action, but the characters are strongly drawn and the descriptions of the natural environment - the real antagonist of the story - are terrific.

Pero que bonita manera de contar una historia, Vázquez Figueroa tiene un Don. Si alguien me hubiera dicho, mira, un libro acerca del descubrimiento de las cataratas de... le hubiera dicho: Ok lo checo luego, pero leer la historia te encanta cuando la lees escrita por este hombre.

Lo leí sin esperar mucho de él, pero es una aventura maravillosa, divertida y bien contada. Jimmy es un personaje entrañable.

Two men in the middle of Venezuela, searching for gold. Later, two men flying over Venezuela, for the same reason. Even later, the same again. And even later, a group of four people flying to one specific spot in Venezuela, still for the same reason. Basically the book in a nut-shell. Which should by no means indicate that it is bad! Quite the contrary.
Like Vázquez-Figueroa's "Tuareg", this is a declaration of love for the landscape and the pure, unconquered, dangerous nature - even though instead of a desert, it is the rain forest this time. And again it is natives saving the whites / the "civilized" people despite them being ignorant and insulting the native customs. However, this was not the main focus of this novel, and neither did the native get the point of view. The message came across, anyway.
Vázquez-Figueroa writes a modern, un-American western: a badass hero with a special talent and his sidekick go on a trip in search of something, while fighting nature. It is very interesting, and has some really funny bits and pieces. The writing style is light with an easy flow throughout. Much like "Tuareg", this book too has a surprising and tragic ending. It was really good, full of suspense and at times simply breathtaking.

Screw it, I'm five staring this. I had no idea what to expect when I started this, but it was recommended to me by someone special, so I gave it my all and it returned with more than gold (and diamonds).
The setting is interesting, even though it doesn't focus on anything I normally read about or deal in.
The character relations is where it tops for me. It creates bonds and encounters, that you wish it was yourself, which is quite a feat.
At the moment I think I might be too far sucked into it to really talk sense about it.

Hermoso! Completamente hermoso.
La primera parte me pareció desgarradora, luego con la llegada de Ángel fue lo mucho que me reí, que gran combinación de personajes y que gran viaje fue.
Las los últimas sí me llenaron de una gran melancolía. ¿cómo algo que al principio me alegró tanto me hizo poner tan sentimental luego? Vázquez es bueno con esto, es el segundo libro que leo de el y me encanta.
