The second edition of The Passion Season, Book I of the Covalent Series, is now available for preorder. Release date: 9.25.18.
A superhuman warrior from another dimension. An FBI agent with a troubled past. A search for a killer that uncovers a sacrificial cult.
When Special Agent Zan O’Gara investigates a ritual murder, she meets the only man who’s ever been able to reach beyond her emotional defenses. Little does she know he harbors a dangerous secret.
Barakiel accepted his solitary life after the rulers of his homeworld banished him to Earth, but his growing power has him crackling with restless need. He knows he should stay away from the captivating Zan O’Gara before his enemies make her a target. No matter. There’s no taming the unruly passion of a Covalent warrior.
As Zan’s investigation brings her closer to the truth about her lover, Barakiel realizes his presence on Earth has placed its most vulnerable citizens in danger. Compelled to protect them, he undertakes a series of duties he may not survive, even as Zan rescues him from a deadened heart.
"A tale about Lucifer’s son that deftly draws in readers with engrossing characters." — Kirkus Reviews
WARNING: This book contains foul language, violence, explicit sex, and descriptions of sexual violence. Adults only! This is not a stand-alone novel, but the first in a five-part series. The story continues in The Pain Season, Book II of the Covalent Series, to be re-released 10.23.18.
Libby Doyle escapes real life by writing extravagant tales, filled with adventure, sex, and violence. When not tapping away at her fiction, she works as an attorney. Libby loves absurd humor, music, hiking, and her husband. The Covalent Series, Libby's magnum opus (at least so far), is a science fantasy and love story in five parts. All five books are now available in Kindle Unlimited.
I have been itching for a good urban fantasy novel I could sink my teeth into and I absolutely found that and so much more with The Covalent Series! I was lucky enough to get an advanced copy and I couldn’t put it down. I can’t remember the last time a romance novel had me staying up into the morning hours just so I could finish a chapter. And then another. And another!
This book is filled with everything a great romance story needs—witty humor, a powerful female protagonist, a sexy hero, an evil villain, murder, and some quirky side characters. The backstory is so intense that you feel drawn in from Chapter 1 (though definitely do NOT skip the prologue). Zan, the main character, is someone who I truly admire and is someone that many women can, in some way, relate to. Barakiel, the main hero of the story, isn’t a cookie cutter warrior, but a man who is deeply troubled and frustrated. And the chemistry between these two…Oh. My. God. Not your mother’s romance novel folks!
Libby Doyle’s breakout novel is stunning with notes of science and music woven in between that it almost feels literary, but never pulls you out of the story. I’m sure we can expect even more intense and interesting happenings between Zan and Barakiel in the rest of the series. Hands down a 5 star novel. I am hooked!
An FBI agent and an immortal warrior from another dimension take on the forces of evil, both mortal and immortal. Zan (the FBI agent) and Rainer (immortal warrior) are well articulated characters who kept the story moving even when it tended to get bogged down in the world-building. The chemistry between starts hot and gets hotter. The interweaving of modern day Philadelphia and normal dating concerns (is it too soon to move into together) with the imagined world of the Covalent (where the forces of light battle the forces of darkness with blades not guns) takes a little getting used to but carries the story along with an epic momentum.
My only major complaint is that for over half the book, Rainer is preparing to reveal what he truly is to Zan and then doesn't -- that bit waits for book 2.
Libby Doyle’s first installment of her Covalent Series is urban fantasy taken to the next level. Her powers of description and the poetic rhythms of her prose bring alive the otherworldly elements of the story. You’ll vividly experience the Covalent Realm and the byways of Philadelphia. At the center of this urban fantasy saga is a tragic superhuman hero who for centuries has been paying the price for an unspeakable evil that has made him an outcast to his kind (but also a useful tool for them) and a lovely troubled FBI agent who is utterly unlike any human being he has met in, well, hundreds of years. The two find love and sex (lots) and joy, but can they ever be truly together? Will circumstances they cannot control tear them apart? With all this there is a lot of good music, both are gifted musicians in different genres, a gruesome mystery to solve, religious mythology, devious criminals and a faithful, powerful Covalent compatriot who is one of the best sidekicks I’ve come across. Mix in Doyle’s effortless way with dialogue that always rings true, whether it’s breaking your heart or making you laugh out loud. — and you have a terrific tale you’ll find hard to put down. Sign me up for Book II.
This was free, thought it would be memes due to the incredible cover... Turned out to be a pretty fun read, especially the first chunk of the book. I wish it was shorter and to the point, it really dragged after the mid point. A shame.
Well... I am a little pissed because it isn't the last book and I have to wait for 2 more books to be published to find out what happens to Zan O'Hara and Rainer. Other than that, Wow! Not what I expected when I started reading this book. It is sooo much more than the typical 'Alien/Romance' that I was sure I wasn't going to like it. Once the story started to develop, I couldn't stop reading. I finished the three books published in 4 days. So I'll say this... if you want to read books that are typical, don't buy these books! If you want to read books where you can guess what is going to happen, again, not the book for you! But if you want a book that stretches your imagination, characters that are set loose from their perceived role in our everyday lives and worlds that capture your breath... Then this, 'The Covalent Series', is for YOU! I highly recommend this series!!!!
This book takes urban fantasy and paranormal romance to the edge and back again. Amazingly well written story that weaves mythology, suspense and romance. I love how Doyle built a fantastical world around Lucifer and his fall from grace that built into our modern reality. His millennia long battle against the forces of destruction have hardened Barakiel's heart, but with the balance of creation and destruction in jeopardy he has no time for love. Though her past has left her broken, Zan changes all of that. Together they find love and joy and discover the true powers of the heart. This book is an excellent first book of the series, leaving many questions unanswered. I fervently hope those answers are coming in future books.

ARC Received from Hidden 💎Gems. The book was $3.99 on Amazon at the time of this review.
This book reminded me strongly of the great movie, "Highlander", but Barakiel🐺🔪 is fighting demons, not other immortal beings. In many ways the book is very different from the movie. Regardless of the similarities, I loved this book📙 and really enjoyed reading it! This is an Adult themed Romance and it ends in a cliffhanger.
The Passion Season is a little hard to categorize. It has elements of mystery, fantasy and romance. Maybe even a little bit of science fiction.
Good versus evil is the overall theme. Heaven versus Hell. Light versus dark. On the one side, you have characters with angelic names like Barakiel and other the other side you have Lucifer. No need to try to interpret that imagery.
Barakiel is the very old, very strong, arrogant, headstrong immortal member of the Covalent race that dwells on a parallel plain. Because he is the son of Lucifer, the Covalent fear Barakiel may be Lucifer’s path to overtake their world. So, he has been banished to Earth where he has lived for centuries.
In the 21st century, he meets strong, intelligent FBI agent Zan O’Gara who seeks Barakiel’s expertise on a strange case she is investigating. Instant attraction means that the two will find ways to work together even if it is not a good idea. Their relationship is very passionate. Steamy is an even better description.
Barakiel necessarily withholds much personal information from Zan. As an FBI agent, she is going to figure it out eventually. This part of their relationship is headed for a showdown. But it doesn’t happen in this book.
The Passion Season is the first of a 5-book series. I’m not sure where the story is headed. This book had a lot of set up, but not very much plot resolution. In fact the book blurb warns that this is not a standalone book. While I enjoyed reading this first book, I am reticent about continuing the series if the rest of the books are as cliffhangery. This first book is perma-free at Amazon and books 2 and 3 are currently only $.99, so if this sounds good to you, binge reading is in order.
This book takes a scientific approach to good and evil, angels and demons. Lucifer has snapped and determined to fight the other Covalent’s after his banishment. His obsessive focus has lead him to banish his own son, Barakiel to the Earthly plane. He has spent many hundred years on this earth but no one has really mattered until he met Zan O’Gara.
Zan, Alexandra, O’Gara is a Special Agent investigating a ritual murder. She has a broken past and determined to not let anyone in. Well that is until she meets Barakiel. The hit it off instantly, and several times throughout the book. But they have found someone that they could have a life with. If Barakiel could only tell Zan the truth.
This is a great read. I liked how religion and science mixed together to form the world of the Covalent. It was explained in a way that made sense yet not too heavy on the science. After discovering his mother eviscerated, I couldn’t blame Barakiel for leaving hell. Its clear Lucifer has lost his mind and wants Barakiel on his side of this fight.
Zan was a great, tough woman. I really enjoy female lead characters that can stand on their own two feet and not need a man to protect or coddle them. Of course the two hit it off and spend almost as much time in bed as finding the killer. I admit that I don’t mind some sex in books but this took it a bit too far. I think I had to skip half of the book just to solve the murders.
Overall this is a great paranormal romance with lots of sex. I think it was a good start to the series and I am interested in where it is going from here.
I received a complimentary copy of this book. I voluntarily chose to read and post an honest review.
FBI agent Zan meets the decidedly hunky ancient weapons consultant while investigating ritual-like human remains. Barakiel is reclusive but knowledgeable, and they discover they have much in common, including instant lust and a desire to know one another better. However, not all those who know them are happy with their developing relationship, and it is only a matter of time that Barakiel’s warrior lifestyle in a whole other plane is going to remain a secret without consequences in the real world. Because, after all, he IS Lucifer’s son, and that in itself implies a unique set of issues…
This is an intriguing and creative start to this series, with strong main characters, woven with paralleling conflicts which I was watching and waiting to collide.
Well written and engaging, up to a point. The action and sex sequences got to be a little repetitive, and nothing is really resolved by the end of the book. Of the main couple, the female FBI agent is far more interesting than the petulant and stalkerish male angel/demon.
I'm still trying to decide if I want to continue on to the second book. If the first book had a resoution of sorts, I probably would have. But I'm not sure I need a (somewhat simple) story that may end up taking four books to resolve.
Special Agent Alexandra O’Gara (“Zan”) is a strong female working for the FBI. Rainer Barakiel, son of the traitor Lucifer, is a strong male from the Covalent race who has been banished to Earth. The romance forming between Zan and Barakiel is well-paced and believable.
I think the book is good, but I was having a problem following all the characters (most likely from my lack of sleep). Rather than mumble on, I’ll just state that I intend to read the next one in the series after I go back and review this one in the morning!
Zan O’Gara is a Special Agent investigating a serial murder and Barakiel is a male banished to Earth. He continually puts himself in danger as she investigates the crime looking for the killer. They have excellent chemistry and the romance pulls us right in along with the case. Great writing and characters. This is a voluntary review of an advance reader copy.
Book one of the Covalent Series and I want to read more of them. This is the first book by this Author that I have read, a well-written story I enjoyed reading. I received a copy from Hidden Gems and I am voluntarily reviewing it.
I thought it started from a novella because I felt like I came in the middle of a story. I still couldn't keep it in down until I Find out if he will tell her about his life. I can't wait for 2 and 3. This is superb. A mathematical parallel universe.
This story does defy description. Not really sci-fi or fantasy but closer to fantasy I think. Strong characters with fun R rated interactions but book one has a cliffhanger ending. So as curious as I might be to continue I most likely will not - “maybe” rating.
Wow this book had me guessing from the very start, wonderfully gripping and could not put it down. Managed to finish this within 48 hours and immediately wanted to devour the second book. Well done
The basis of the Covalent race is pretty damn cool to this science nerd. The author used the chemistry behind covalent bonds between atoms (do you remember your chemistry classes?) and Christian mythology of angels, heaven and hell to explain the purpose of her Covalent race. Guardians (like angels) are Warriors of the Rising (When Lucifer led the rebellion against The Council Forces in the Covalent Realm [Heaven]) that give up their lives to fight the demons and Corrupted (Covalent that have lost the power of balance, but had it replaced with the force of Destruction [Hell]).
Guardians keep the balance between the Creation and Destruction elemental forces; just like a covalent bond between atoms. Demons and the Corrupted can cross into the earthly realm during the equinox and solstices to fight. But Guardians must keep the balance in themselves by not hurting anyone weaker than they are, which means humans, even if they deserve to die for their evil deeds.
"Balance was the wellspring of Covalent power, the equalibrium of Creation and Destruction, order and entropy, attraction and repulsion, love and hate."
It is all very complicated, but the author does a great job of simplifying it so it is easy to understand.
The world building is part of the overall story arc of good vs evil fighting it out on earth. Layered on that is a hard core paranormal romance: fated mate, hours long soul shattering sex, swooning, impossibly romantic alpha male that is physical perfection, and all. I'm not a big PNR fan so this part of the story was a bit much for me, but for those who love that kind of thing...you will be drooling all over the pages. The sex isn't the erotic kind either, more the sensual soul shredding type.
The story is about the Guardian Barakiel (Covalents have angle like names), and his relationship with Zan (his forbidden, human, fated mate) and also his bond to Pellus. A Covalent Adept and his closest and dearest friend (this is not a sexual thing). There are almost as many scenes between Barakiel and Pellus as with Zan. That makes three main storylines in this one book (Barakiel-Zan, Barakiel-Pellus, Barakiel-good vs evil arc) and that was a problem for me, I felt like I was reading three different books, which also made it long: 556 pages! I prefer one main storyline and then lots of sub-plots.
There is PNR goodness to feast on and cool world building to geek out to, but if you don't love both you might find yourself skimming some parts. For me it was the PNR stuff.
The Passion Season: Book I of the Covalent Series by Libby Doyle is a truly amazing urban fantasy guaranteed to set the heart strings aflutter and the pulse racing. At the start it follows Rainer Barakiel, son of Lucifer as he is exiled from his home. He is a Covalent, a race who above all things must find a balance between the energies of creation and destruction. His father Lucifer was a traitor, and gained control over the destruction realm and all those who dwelled within. Relentlessly he sends his forces against the Covalent in hope to seize control, whilst also sending his minions to the earthly realm where the son he wished to win over was exiled. Loneliness threatens to engulf Rainer, but find unexpected friendship from Pellus, an adept assigned to him who shield his activities from mortal eyes. Empires rise and fall, his time passed in a combination of business and battle, longing for home. But then he finds it in the most unexpected place, in the arms of a human known as Zan, and finds in her a kindred spirit. Zan, (Alexandra O'Gara) is no stranger to turmoil, she has a warrior’s soul and has survived more than most should ever witness in her life, a former army veteran, recovering alcoholic, who now works as an agent for the FBI. She has no interest in men but is helplessly drawn towards him, and both have secrets they would rather remain buried. With the war between realms and the uncovering of sacrificial cults Zan grows closer to discovering a truth that could put her very life in jeopardy, one Rainer must shield her from, or risk what they have become.
If I could give any more than five stars I would. Libby Doyle has a vivid descriptive voice allowing the crafting of beautifully scripted romance, epic conflicts, and heart pounding action. Clear thought has gone into every aspect of the plot, from the inner workings of magic, to the dividing of realms in a fantastic manner. The Passion Season: Book I of the Covalent Series truly is a book you won’t want to put down. Written in alternating character point of views we are given glimpses into the psyche of some very real, well-constructed characters. It has everything, good vs evil, conflict, friendship, betrayal, and some smoking hot sex scenes, which at no point were anything other than beautifully written. Engaging, page turning, thrilling, I just couldn’t put it down. One thing is for certain, Libby has been added onto my top author list so I remember to keep an eye out for the next book in this epically fantastic series.
I must say I've been looking to reading this urban fantasy debut novel from Libby Doyle. I will be the 1st to say pay attention as your reading as this book does have a lot going on in it and it does change POV on you. This story line goes with the basic Good vs. Evil but so much more complicated than just that by far!
This is for sure a complex world but the author does a fab job creating it for you to enjoy. This book for sure has PNR and Fantasty combined so I would think fans of either genre of both would love this book plus the sex in it doesn't hurt it a bit ; ) It really does give it all. It is a bit technical but trust me give it a chance. This isn't what you would call a light read. It's a bit more complex due to the combination of biblical themes and Sci-Fi ish (yup I made up a word lol) but it's played out well in this book and the author makes it simple as possible to follow.
I will say Zan is my favorite character out of them all. She's not whiny and annoying like most female characters in PNR. Rainer is a perfect compliment to her indeed. I do look forward to the next book and see what's next. Due to many characters and background that are in this novel I will without a doubt have to refresh myself when the next one comes out.
Highly recommend if you don't want a fluff PNR, love some fantasy, love some sci-fi or just want to try a rather unique book that I feel is one of a kind.
For as many paranormal or fantasy types of books I’ve read, this one was definitely different than the usual I read. It has some characters that most people are used to seeing in supernatural stories, such as Lucifer. And he just so happens to be the father of the leading male character- Barakiel (aka Rainer). The author did a good job world building. Although, in the beginning of the book I was a bit confused as to what was going on, but I did catch on and the story became clearer once it reached the present…century. Zan, the leading lady is a witty but strong female character, no whinny damsel there. Chemistry is thick between the two of them, Rainer and Zan. POV switches between characters, which is an aspect I enjoy within books. The editing and writing was well done. If you’re looking for a world built on magic, mystery, action, some Covalent politics, and most of all romance (can’t forget the steamy sexy scenes too) with an HEA, then I recommend this book would be for you. I give this book (4) hearts, as I received a copy of this book from Romance Authors that Rock, in exchange for an honest review.
The Passion Season by Libby Doyle is the first in a series and delivers a wonderful set-up for what is to come. Described as urban fantasy, I found that the book was actually an incredible mix of some of my favorite genres, blending mystery, action, and romance in with the urban fantasy. I’ll be the first to tell you that I’m pretty tired of books about demons, but Libby does an awesome job of making this story feel completely separate from all the others. Yes, it’s about Lucifer’s son, but it’s not that simple. The race of Covalents is a unique and well thought out approach to the traditional Angels vs Demons. I really enjoyed the different classifications of the Covalents and their individual talents. The romance in the book between Zan and Barakiel is well paced. It felt real and never forced. The delay in physical contact was perfectly done so that by the time they finally got together, I was pumping my fist in the air in celebration! Though, let’s be honest, Barakiel’s being a total badass warrior was my favorite part of the book. Killer fight scenes and a really solid hero for me to get behind. Great story, but definitely for adults only!
Back in March, I was luck to be part of the Release Day Blitz and I had been dying to read the book and have the opportunity to review. I can tell you straight that I was not disappointed in a bit and I went I hit the last page, I was dying for more!
Boy was I not disappointed, the Passion Season is awesome and I cannot wait to read the next in the series. I would need to start from the beginning and talk about our main characters Zan and Barakiel. Talking of Barakiel, well he is a Covalent and the Covalents have been fighting for a long long time the forces of Lucifer and his Demons, and btw Barakiel is Lucifer’s son.
It should come then as no surprise when I tell you that I highly recommend it and it was such a surprisingly captivating and brilliant book and I cannot wait for the next one! It is going to be super hard to wait for it, but sadly we have no choice.
I absolutely loved this book! I'm a huge fan of Urban Fantasy, and this book successfully filled all my reading needs! With plenty of action, loads of intrigue and some hot romance thrown in, I was captivated from beginning to end. The storyline was nice and full, the dialogue was rich, and the characters were quite complex, yet easy to follow. I loved that Zan was a strong heroine that could take care of business! I get a little tired of reading about lead women that are always so delicate a strong wind will blow them over! The action and fighting scenes were very descriptive and I could easily visualize them in my head like watching a movie! There is quite a bit of a cliffhanger at the end that leaves me aching for more though! Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book and can't wait to get the sequel!
At the beginning we learn that there is a world of people who have in our past been gods and God and Lucifer to us. But they are instead a very long living race that either dies during battle or when they decide to end it. Lucifer is real and has separated from them. He has gone mad and is trying to destroy them. And in doing uses us against them. His son refuses to join him and this is the story of his life. A life in exile with us. After centuries he finds love with a human woman. And if it was known he would be killed for it. But his people and Lucifer will use him and pull him from his love. A love who he can not tell the truth of who he is to.
I enjoyed the story but at times it seems to drag on. The story is a cliffhanger and we don't know what will happen to him or his love.
I won this book in an online sweepstakes. That being said, I loved eighty percent of this book. Zan is a strong female protagonist with a deep vulnerable history who works for the FBI. Barakiel is a strong male protagonist who is of the Covalent race. Although this book is billed as a romance between these two, the intertwining of the FBI case that Zan is handling and the problems that Barakiel faces kept me turning the pages.
The twenty percent of the book that I didn't particularly enjoy was the explicit sexual content. I found myself skipping over these pages to get to what I felt was the actual story line.
I wasn't ready for this book to end and I am sure that I will read Book 2 when it comes out.
She's an FBI agent and he's a Covalent, what might be called an angel. Son of Lucifer, Barakiel is exiled to Earth. Using dimensional portals the Covalent warriors do battle with Lucifer and his demons while trying to maintain a Cosmic Balance. Zan plays a mean guitar and rocks the house when she and her band play. She comes into contact with Barakiel in his current life disguise due to repeat ritualized killings that are taking place in the city. Unbeknownst to her Lucifer is trying to influence his son to his way of thinking or else kill him. Together they will be involved with the killings, all the while taking out demons with gun and sword. They are a match made in heaven.
I recommend this book to anyone who likes good looking men who wear power like a worn out jacket.
