The Reverend Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, better known by the pen name Lewis Carroll, was an English author, mathematician, logician, Anglican clergyman and photographer.
His most famous writings are Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and its sequel Through the Looking-Glass as well as the poems "The Hunting of the Snark" and "Jabberwocky", all considered to be within the genre of literary nonsense.
Oxford scholar, Church of England Deacon, University Lecturer in Mathematics and Logic, academic author of learned theses, gifted pioneer of portrait photography, colourful writer of imaginative genius and yet a shy and pedantic man, Lewis Carroll stands pre-eminent in the pantheon of inventive literary geniuses.
this isn't exactly what i read but it gets the point across, i listened to the poetry of lewis carroll and it's so fun hearing! i really enjoyed the wonderland feels and enjoyed my journey as i try to retrain my brain on how to write poetry!!
I thought my obsession with Alice in wonderland had reached its peak, but clearly I underestimated myself…. This has launched me into a whole new realm of extravagant fixation and I’m embracing every glorious, unhinged second.
Before my review, I should mention that it has been many years since I read a collection of poems. I also typically read poetry for enjoyment rather than to analyze its deeper meanings, so my review will be based solely on that.
I found the experience quite pleasant overall. The collection is varied, and while there were a handful of poems that I personally found dull or just plain bad, there were also several that captivated me to the point that I read them over and over again. What surprised me most was how different most poems were from Carroll's writing style in "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland." The brief description at the beginning of his life helped dampen my expectations, but I ended up preferring the poems not found in Alice in Wonderland. Most of the poems are rather silly in nature and gave me a good chuckle. This is different from other poetry I have read in the past, and I found it refreshing.
I: You have a gift for rhyme. F: Yes, Yes some of the time
I feel like Fezzik was inspired by Lewis Carroll's poetry. This book was like watching a continual rhyming scene...and I can completely relate with Vizzini.
V: No more rhymes now I mean it. F: Anybody want a peanut?
Lewis Carroll's poetry is... not all amazing. In fact, some of it is flat out dull. But the inclusion of the poems from the Alice books, The Hunting of the Snark, and Phantasmagoria ultimately made this a win for me. A completionist's necessity.
