I really enjoyed THE LOST CELT, by A.E. Conran. It captures the minds of fourth grade boys perfectly, in a subtle but deep exploration of themes of war, returning veterans, and the impact both have on families. It also does an excellent job of reviving the exciting Celtic legends, with a special nod to historical fiction writer, Rosemary Sutcliff.
After observing a "veteran" in a VA hospital, Mikey pieces together a theory that the man is a time traveler, suffering from trips between the Otherworld and Mikey’s present time. The man’s obsession with the tale of Cuchulain, a war hero in an Irish legend, further cements Mikey’s theories, and he sets out to find the warrior, who is on the loose, homeless, and a possible danger to whomever he sees. This book is full of intrigue, and the main character of Mikey, his best friend, Kyler, and his enemy, Ryan, push the story into new adventure and an ever-evolving understanding of the secret life of the lost Celt. As far as subject matter goes, what a timely story this is! Very few people understand what veterans go through, and Mikey, through such characters as his lovable and funny grandfather, and his best friend’s mother—a doctor at the VA hospital—begins to understand the impact war has on his small world.
I’ve never read a book that tackles this subject matter, and it’s done in such an interesting way that readers will, in my opinion, be hooked from the first to the last page. Speaking of finishes, I read this whole book in a single day. I haven’t done that for years, but the words kept drawing me deeper and deeper into Mikey’s life and the mysteries swirling around him. The pitch perfect characters will appeal to both boys and girls. A highly enjoyable read!
(Note: For the sake of transparency, I saw the original draft in my critique group several years ago. That being said, when I finally had the chance to read the book, it was very different then when I’d seen it last. Also, my memory isn’t very good, as several people can attest, so it was like reading something almost completely new.)
