Gloria met Rich, and the most organic romance began to write itself. On the heels of the animated V2, Takerra travels to a more serene place to bring you a story of two people finding one another in the most enthralling of ways – when they don’t want to. The key ingredients of intrigue are here – he’s self-aware, dominant, with a dangerous yet captivating edge. While she on the other hand, is unlike any other female he’s encountered and the nemesis to the typical ideals of the urban beauty. She’s headstrong, she’s flawed, she wears her struggles as a badge of honor – and she’s REAL. He has come to her town for a purpose, and she lives day to day searching for one. When the two collide, the world stops. Drama and suspense take a backseat to the primary emotions we all encounter – desire, fear, regret, and HOPE. The characters peel back layers and the story doesn’t skyrocket, it builds. Devout was a tornado…and this is the sweet summer’s breeze creeping through your window. Still, these pages get steamy, like a humid night in August, and they come when you least expect it. With the feel of a historic romance, journey with the everyday woman trying to make it in her world, and not so everyday things begin to occur.

If this is what early TA was brining to the table then it’s no wonder why she’s pressure in the literary world today. This chick has a way of pulling every freaking emotion from you with every thing she writes! Eve👏🏽ry 👏🏽 e👏🏽mot👏🏽ion 👏🏽!!!!
Munthill was a small town. One of those towns where everyone knows everyone and all ya business in between. For Gaby and the other Munthillers this was life for them. They worked, struggled, survived and did so as a community. No one could have anticipated that Mavi Magaña would come barreling through town with his crew and turn ish upside down!
Mavi didn’t have an easy life. Growing up on the rough streets of Belize he had men in his family that introduced him to a lifestyle that stripped his soul from him little by little. Once he was able to make a not so clean break he was on the next thing smoking to America. Despite his efforts, those demons he wanted so desperately to leave behind always managed to linger close by.
Mavi had one goal when he came to Munthill and it definitely wasn’t falling in love with the most mysterious woman he’s ever encountered. Gaby was like no woman he’s ever met. Thanks to her Ma’Dear, she had a good head on her shoulders and was not easily impressed by the material things. How was your heart, can you sleep with a clean conscious, are you honest in your words and deeds? This is what mattered to her and she challenged Mavi on the deepest level. Gaby felt like Mavi saved her but in the end, it was she who saved him!
Mavi and Gaby had an interesting love story but the love story that intrigued and captivated me most was Mavi and Chase!!! I meeeeaaaannnn every time they were on page together my heart fluttered!! Chase’s birthday, EVERYTHING, Chase learning to play basketball, EVERYTHING, the fish tacos, EVERYTHING! Yes Mavi was everything Gabi needed but he was also everything Chase needed!
At this point I’m convinced that everything TA touches turns to gold and I can’t wait to dive into my next read by her.
Munthill is a small town that reminds me of every small town across America. Everybody knows everybody and their business. And we small-towners, don’t take too kindly to newcomers trying to change things. Boy meets girl, girl perfect woman. 🤎 Here enters the journey of Gabrielle and Mavi, from the brilliant mind of the undeniable Takerra Allen. Mavi “Power” Magaña was the man, broken and powerful. This story was almost like poetry, music to my ears, and it was raw. You’re sucked in from the beautifully written prologue, TA asks that you be still before indulging in this love story, I realize now that I wasn’t still enough. I felt every emotion with the characters; every butterfly, every fear, every heartbeat, every break, every betrayal, and every ounce of love. If you’re a sister: ask yourself, “Would I ever hurt my sister?”. Here comes the love and unknown, unspoken envy between Gabrielle and Gloria. I was drawn too deeply into this story because never have I wanted to fight a character. But isn’t that a TA thing to do to you? Did you know that friends can be sisters and soulmates too? Because Mia knew.
Munthill is a small town so when fresh meat comes to the town everyone’s going to know. Rich and Gloria cross paths which leads to Gaby and Mavi crossing paths. Mavi was smitten with Gaby. Gaby was the definition of resilient. Mavi was trying to get Gaby into her soft girl era but Gaby was too prideful. Now to bxtchass Gloria..she got off way too easy how you jealous your sister finally found happiness. I loved Mrs.Myrtle with her crazy self 🤣. Also for some random reason I kept thinking of Shyne when hearing Mavi speak since they both Belizean.
This is one of my favorite books of all time. Gaby & Mavi’s story is beautiful & natural. As a woman, I related to Gaby’s experience. I loved Takerra’s writing in this. I always recommend this book to people. WELL DONE!!! (I own the physical & Kindle versions.)
The town of Munthill offers the same mundane living from day to day. And Gaby was not the exception to this, but when Mavi BKA Power finds his way to her small town, an affair fit for fairytales blooms. But when past nightmares come back to haunt the present and half truths and half lies unfold, will Gaby and Mavi still hold true to what they found in each other or lose it all?
T. Allen wasn't speaking to me when she asked readers to take their time with this story (lol). Any review I have ever written speaks of pacing within a timeline. And I must say the magical ride with intricate ups and downs, lulls and highs Takerra takes readers on in this story is a breath of fresh air in an already hectic world. This book literally was published at the right time and was my escape at the time I needed it in the worst way. I got lost in the town of Munthill and stayed for a good while. I must say that sooo much in this plot touched me personally as a Black woman. And everything Takerra wanted me to feel, every emotion she wished to have pour out of her..into Gaby, Mavi and this town, I got it..and felt it deeply. There is so much to reflect on in this story, that you sit down and think on all you have maybe faced daily as a Black woman. And yet still, she found a way to highlight our melanin magic, and restore some faith in self love..real love. The various metaphors and symbolic references had my mind on LIT..you hear me!? LIT... there was so much thought provoking material in this book, I felt like I was being mentally stimulated. Takerra has this simple way with words that's so complex in symbolism, that if you don't read between the lines, you would miss half the book. And the playlist..it's just something so special when an author can infuse music and just make the picture they paint that more vibrant.
Gaby is me..and the next Black woman..and the next Black woman. And I thought I found a kindred spirit in Jordin (Restricted Series)! Wow, Gaby is the most relatable and realistic character to date that Takerra has penned, imo. I felt her trials and tribulations; the weight of the world and her struggles to breathe through it all. And ...Mavi just came in and took her last bit of oxygen away, like a whirlwind of sorts that left not only Gaby in a frenzy, but me as well. He was THEE most enigmatic male character Takerra has written..EVER. It was almost like he alone was a mystery that had to be solved throughout the storyline. Like if you blinked you would miss something that revealed a lil more of his ora but you just had to close your eyes to feel if he was real or just smoke and mirrors. Just the air about him made me tremble as I read! The passion and chemistry between these two is well detailed and sets their love story ablaze like warm chicken noodle soup on a cold winter day. M.M. was "mmmMMmm good" for Gaby's soul! The minor characters were beyond developed and I enjoyed their entanglement into the storyline which added more depth. Listen..listen Linda! the antagonist (can't give it away) is like up there with Noe (Restricted Series) with that messiness, smh. I was beyond heated because in many ways, it's a pain you can relate to as a woman when betrayed, you know. Read this, to feel me people! These side characters had their own sub plot going and when you think you have it figured out, you have no idea! It was almost like getting more than you bargined for because of who Gaby and Mavi are: the minor characters added so much to an already hearty story.
#teamPower
Also, I can't speak on these characters without mentioning the very made up town of Munthill that added so much airy wonder to the plot. I felt like I was transported to another space in time. But yet found it to be quite plausible as I too live in a small space, an island with a minute population when compared to the rest of the world. So I totally understand Munthill and their residents. Their mannerisms and their laid back way of life is my own and I smiled as I saw myself and my kin played out before my eyes. Kudos on depicting a place that I could swear I would be able to locate on a map,Takerra.
And that ending? Well..it's like you would think it would end in a way you never imagined..knowing Takerra Allen and when you feel this burst in your chest and you long for something and she gives it to you..in a diff way, the right way. You just can appreciate her authenticity as an author: a creative soul who can only write what fits and this end was seamlessly written and fit Gaby and Mavi SO perfectly. I am full in heart and mind and even though I'd ALWAYS want more from Takerra, I am quite satisfied with that ending.
🚨🚨An Affair on Munthill was released in 2016. I’m late to the party and just finally read it. I would be a fool to not review and shed light on this phenomenal story🔥🔥
Love can be simple. Love can happen for simple people. Munthill is a small town. A town where everyone knows everyone. Gaby and Gloria are sisters and two small town girls with different outlooks on life. Gloria is dreamy eyed, awaiting the day that her Prince Charming comes to sweep her off her feet. Gaby is a single mother with the world on her shoulders who doesn’t believe in fairytales. The town of Munthill doesn’t get much action, that is until best friends, Rich and Mavi aka Power, set their sights on Munthill for a business venture. Gloria and Rich meet and it’s instant attraction yet superficial. Gloria really believes she’s hit the jackpot *rolls eyes*. Enough about those two. Mavi Magana and Gaby are the truth!!! 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾 Both were stubborn as hell and attempting to deny their attraction for each other is comical! Gaby embodies “a strong black woman”. She had a strong exterior, smiles, and keeps a brave face to keep the bills paid and her family fed. She puts everyones needs before her own. But yet wakes up at 3am to cry and have a few private moment of vulnerability. Mavi is exactly what she needs, but as their relationship progresses, you realize that he needs her, maybe a lot more than she needs him. Mavi was the man!!! He lived up to his nickname, Power. He was a force. Strong, intelligent, wealthy but doesn’t broadcast it. He was a quiet storm. Mavi had demons though. Their story was beautiful! It was simple. Unhurried. Organic. Kindred. They learned a lot about themselves, each other and a whole lot of mess about the people closest to them! Check this one out!! Phenomenal writing and character development!! This is exactly why Takerra is a top 3 writer of mine! 🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾
So, listen. Mavi “Power” Magaña was everything. Had to add him to the book bae list 😂
Munthill was a tiny, country town. Power and Rich came into town trying to open a casino and ending up meeting two sisters - Gabrielle and Gloria. Gabrielle was the “strong” one. A single mother with a deadbeat baby’s father, head of her household taking care of jobless Gloria and her 18 yr old brother Gary, and she was barely making ends meet. She held things together as best as she could but my girl was tired. She had the weight of the world on her shoulders. Her sister Gloria was looking to be saved - so when she saw Rich- she knew she hit the jackpot.
Power accepted Gaby for who she was and adored her and her son. I loved how tough he was with everyone else but soft with her. He was her safe space. He got her to open up and that was no easy task. The problem is he was so busy getting her to open up that he didn’t open up to her. Of course that caused some issues. Power had a traumatic past and did some things he wasn’t proud of. Although he was an amazing man to Gaby, he wasn’t perfect.
This was a great story, the ending just wasn’t complete for me. Gloria got away with too much. That was never dealt with. Takerra, you also made us suffer to the very end 😂 I wanted more of their HEA- were they still in the house?
Also had to come back and say I imagine Mavi’s voice sounding like the rapper - Shyne. He was Belizean too 🤤
I wanted to read this book because TA told us that An Affair in Munthill was one of her most underrated novels, and she may be right. This story is a love story with so many layers it's hard not get lost in the storyline and fall in love with the characters. After the introduction of the story being "just a love story" I anticipated on this book being an "okay" read, but it was so much more. It had layers, it had drama and most importantly it had love. I loved Mavi, a gentleman dripping with so much grown man swag. I can add this to the list of books that definitely had The TA effect. Great read!!
Trip who??? Denny who??? G Who???? Please lort send me a Mavi Magna...Takerra has did it again she gives you the struggle, The anguish, Despair, heart ache, worry, stress, And the need to feel loved that all women go through, but not just any women strong black women. I think this is her best work yet. This book is a must read.
Takerra managed to once again pen another excellent work of art. She poured her soul into these pages and I felt every emotion that was saying through her pen. I appreciate her genuine love for her craft. Phenomenal read
This is a definite slow burn. Honestly, Gaby wasn’t very likable in the beginning but the author did a good job with the character development of softening up both Gaby and Power. I liked Power. Definitely a plot twist that I didn’t see coming at all. I feel like the book didn’t turn up until the last 25%. After the first misunderstanding, I was very surprised that Power didn’t tell Gany immediately and left room for more confusion.
This story was very wordy and long winded. Gape was overused.
A group of real estate investors breeze into the small town of Munthill and shake some things up. Their vision is to create a tourist attraction, but what they didn't expect was to find love.
Gaby is a single mother, struggling to maintain a roof over her family's head, help get her brother into college, be Bob the Builder, keep up with the bills, not stress about her baby daddy and deal with her over the top sister. All while working as a pharmacy tech at Walgreen's. At her sister's insistence, she goes to a dinner party at Pana Lake and instantly connects with a mysterious man named Power.
Power aka Mavi, never expected to fall so deep for the standoffish woman with the strong personality. Little by little, the walls came tumbling down and he can't get enough of Gaby. But, his secrets may be too much for her to handle.
Rich and Gloria are two toxic, materialistic people who deserve each other. That's all I'm going to say about that.
I absolutely loved everything about this book, except Gloria and Lena. It restored my belief in manifestation and forgiveness. What a beautiful love story! I wish that I could rate this book more than 💎💎💎💎💎, because @bytakerraallen put her foot, knee and elbow in this one.
This is the remix of the old-fashioned love story where a damsel in distress is saved by the knight in shining armor. However, Gabrielle is far from helpless and Mavi isn't always attentive or courteous. They are unknowingly soul mates who share a need to be saved, loved, and cared for genuinely. Their union challenges, awakens and, ultimately, transcends them both to higher levels of consciousness. I truly connected with this story. I was emotionally pulled in and had an out-of-body experience. I fell in love right along with Gaby and Power. An Affair in Munthill is not cookie-cutter, syrupy-sweet nonsense -- this is what real love feels and looks like.
OMG where do I begin? This book is phenomenal. Well written by an talented author who poetically captured the very essence of the characters. I promise you that you will Not be able to put this book down. I had to read it slowly just to prolong the ending.
Great read from beginning to end. Power was wheww my type of man! Ain’t nothing like a man stepping in taking on another man’s responsibility without even asking! I don’t know why I waited this long to read this book when I had been recommended to read this book for over a year! EXCELLENT READ
Sometimes you’re worth more than your small town can offer
This book covered so much for a standalone. In it we got acquainted with a single mother who had the burden of taking on so much at a young age because there was no one else to do it.
Gaby, took us through the ups and downs of taking care of a household with little to no assistance from anyone. The guilt she felt from not having enough while doing her very best was a heart felt reminder of what single mothers go through on a daily basis.
This book shows that jealousy and envy can shape a household. How turning your back on things that require therapy can turn the most innocent person into a narcissistic. It’s proves that love and family has to separated in order to be happy.
This journal through love and betrayal was such a good read. I was blown away by the emotions Gaby spilled even when she thought no one was listening. I know I’m late for the party as this book has been out for years, but I’m glad I came.
There's no one more important to me…Baby, can't you see through me 'Cause we're alone now and I'm singing this song to you’
Have you ever read a love song? The lyrics are so painstakingly sweet that you just want to fall in love again…and again…and again. Each time you read it…the melodies practically reign down on you. You sigh and just wish upon that falling star that you could live that love song…if only for one moment in time. Well in the quiet town of Muntill resides 3 siblings…Gabrielle, single mother and the oldest, then there’s Gloria, the chameleon, and Gary, the baby boy that lurks in the shadows, you’ll miss him if you don’t look closely. In their household you will meet a dreamer, a realist and the misunderstood, these three live a mundane life with its predictable ups and downs.
Strangers whizz into Munthill residing at the expensive Pana Lake with expensive cars, designer duds and grand ideas about reviving the monotonous lifestyles of the Munthillers. Leading the pack is Rich, who is enchanted with the gorgeous Gloria and what the Rich Boy wants, the Rich Boy gets…who’s choosing who though? There’s the shy Sabrina that unassumingly observes and is apt to chime in at any given time with wisdom as well as warning. And Lena, a vicious siren with a quick reply vying for the attention of the ‘thinker’ of the group. Lastly, there’s Mavi Magana, aka ‘Power’, both names say it all. Power exudes Power, Confidence, Sexiness, Class…yet there is a calm, cunning and calculating factor that makes the hair on your body stand at attention. Power carries himself with an air of authority commandeering attention, reverence and fear because there is danger within the depths of his hypnotic grey orbs. Parables and poetry...this story is lyrical, you hear me. Each encounter has a purpose, each scenario develops a plan, savor each page as it continues to build a riveting tale of the haves and the have nots. The word sparring, the emotional flirting, the 'spiritual connection' are all so mesmerizing, you will indeed be enraptured with this love story in Munthill…this Affair in Munthill.
An Affair in Munthill is mos def tha biznezz!!! I love it because I get so tired of all the over the top scenario's. Now mind you, I know that this is life for some, but give me some meat...something to chew on and really decide if the seasoning is right...if maybe it needed a bit more pepper, season salt, Italian seasoning, garlic, meat tenderizer....something. Just me being Tazzye...this will mos def be a 'palate cleanser' (as CG says)...but mind you. Be prepared, some are gonna be WTW...some ain't ready for all this mind stimulation. It is what it is! BUT the ones that are...are gonna DIG IT for real!!! It's mos def for the GROWN FOLKS...and I mean it....Just. Like. That!!!! An Affair in Munthill is the much anticipated journey that only Takerra Allen can deliver with phenomenal characters, spine tingling scenarios and a classic read that will resonate throughout your mind for eons. Your intellect will be challenged, your attention will be captivated and your psyche will be inspired. Takerra Allen, Remember The Name!!! Game Changer!!!
This novel is probably the greatest book I wasn’t going to read. The cover to the book didn’t match the story at all for me and that cover was the reason I frequently passed over it in my Kindle library. Sadly it looked so old fashioned and had a tela novella vibe. This book though!!! Never judge a book by its cover definitely applies here. Mavi and Gaby had amazing chemistry from beginning to end. As wild as their individual stories were, they weren’t uncommon, especially Gaby’s. Now what was a fairy tale in the making was Mavi’s commitment once he’d decided on Gaby. The man LOVED her completely. The ending was pure gold too.
She brought the heat with this one!!Very good read. The characters in the book you can relate to whether personally, a close friend, or family member. The plot deals with how to love, independence, jealousy, and everyday challenges. I love how the author was very detailed. She makes you think. I laughed, cursed, awwww'ed, and got teary eyed with this book. I highly recommend.
I mean it was everything I knew it would be. Takerra Allen is tough with the writing. Oh how i feel in love with Mavi. This book was all that. I just wish that Gaby had found out about certain things, Rich also. It was worth 50 stars.
This book was recommended a lot when it was newly released and I'm not sure what took me so long to read it! I love this book! I related to the characters and I'll definitely be going to research this author to read more of her work.
