One man's running for his life. His rescuer's fleeing from the past. When the two men collide, one will attempt to prove his worth and the other will try to hang onto his heart.
Kicked out of his dad's house for being gay, Kyle's running for his life. When he's rescued by hot ex-Army soldier Derek, he desires nothing more than a safe place to stay - preferably in Derek's arms. But convincing Derek won't be easy as he has his own demons to fight. Haunted by memories of the war in Afghanistan, Derek's taken aback by Kyle's playfulness and obvious hero worship. Determined not to act on his attraction he resists, but even he can't withstand the sheer amount of fun one smart, sassy techie boy can bring.
Can one somber ex-soldier and one soda-fueled young genius find happiness down by the docks?
This is a case of "story doesn't meet reader's expectation"...
When I picked it up, I was expecting a good emotional journey between the younger Kyle and Derek. Maybe because of the words "his own demons to fight" in the blurb. Yes, Kyle was sassy, playful, and techie-smart (which made him pretty interesting actually) but after a promising set-up (Kyle was beaten by street thugs before Derek rescued him), it went down the drain for me when everything afterwards was treating with a light, dismissive-of-potential-problem attitude.
There was no real conflict, everything was pretty much hunky dory and predictable. I think the story lost its appeal for me when
Plus who would've believed that 'Kyle' in that cover (the one with glasses and backpack) looks like a nineteen year old?! Heck, Kyle didn't even USE glasses *cover fail* ["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>
Crap! I am so fussy about May/December romances and this is one that bugged me. One of the MCs is 19 and just fresh-faced as all get out. I just got those damn heebie-jeebies with the older MC. Like he was taking advantage on the younger guy. I couldn't shake it enough to finish.
This was cute, albeit too short. I would have liked to have seen a bit more of these two, how they forge their lives together.
But as a novella, this was quite lovely. Kyle gets kicked out of his house by his abusive, homophobic father, and doesn't make it but a night on the streets before getting bashed. Rescued by Derek, a veteran suffering from PTSD, before anything too bad happens, Kyle rallies quickly and manages to finagle his way into Derek's life and heart. He's slightly naive when it comes to reality, but he learns quickly.
I thought Kyle was adorable, funny and geeky both, fixing up stuff in Derek's place, and basically ran circles around Derek who finds himself suddenly not only with a younger housemate, but also a lover to warm his bed and keep the nightmares at bay. There's some hero worship at work, most likely, but it didn't feel creepy, and I believed their romance for the most part, even if it happened quickly.
Sure, this was fluff, but I could see that the author had attempted to address the issues within, especially where Kyle displays a huge amount of emotional maturity when it comes to dealing with his messed up family. What also struck me is that these are two people who really need each other, who find exactly the right person for each other, never mind their age difference. Both of them have scars, visible or not, and they help each other heal. And I'm a big marshmallow and gobbled that right up.
As I said, cute, a bit on the fluffy side, but a perfect little book to read on a sunny afternoon.

Kyle has been kicked out of home by his abusive father when it was discovered that he is gay. He’s only nineteen years old and already he has realised he’s not cut out to be on his own. Kyle has been on his own for less than 24 hours, yet he’s already been robbed of all his money and bashed unconscious so thugs can get his backpack. Kyle doesn’t know why he’s been targeted until he wakes up and his rescuer Derek tells him, with all of his brand new gear, expensive gear, it wasn’t half obvious that Kyle wasn’t from that area!
Derek was a retired marine who has found the only way he can deal with his PTSD is by being on the docks, working as a welder. Welding, weather it’s boat repairs or anything else that’s needed calms him and takes his thoughts off what happened to him. What he’s not looking for is a rich, young man who looks at him with a bad case of hero worship! Try as he might he just can’t kick Kyle out, he’s far too young and vulnerable to be let loose on his own.
As the weeks pass Kyle manages to not only impress Derek with his tech savvy (he’s got a television and cable that works!), but with how mature he is with regards to his parents. Kyle has managed to get his mother to leave his abusive father as well. Neither man can’t believe how far they’ve both come since their meeting, Derek’s PTSD has settled down unbelievably. Kyle has matured and found himself a computer programming job with Microsoft in Seattle!
Rescuing Kyle is only a short story but it certainly packs a punch. Not only with the main storyline but the sub story’s, with Derek’s’ PTSD and the abuse with Kyles father. Eva Lefoy has done a masterful job with these topics.

Heartwarming, sexy, short story. It hits all the right buttons ^^
We have the young (but legal), sweet, funny, geeky kid running away from an abusing home. Kicked to the curb for being gay. Breaks your heart. And the older, sexy, ex-military badass who can't help PTSD (and guilt) run his life for him now that he's back from hell, who rescues him from a bashing and most definitely being robbed.
And there you have it. Both got more that night than they wanted or thought they deserved. Both helping the other heal. Caring for someone and having them care for you in return will do that to you.
It's a beautiful story. Sexy and HOT too, don't get me wrong. But it's more about two people needing and wanting each other in their lives, to make it all better. Tugs at your heart. Age difference be damned, I find that all kinds of sexy ^^ They are just right for each other and you can read from both their POV switching throughout the story. Which is a plus for me. I'm nosy like that. Want to know what's going on in both their heads ;) Sweet HEA for you. So, can I stay? Cutest thing ;P
Kyle comes from money but when his alcoholic father founds out he’s gay, he’s kicked out. He’s already been robbed once and now he’s about to be again. In the midst of a beating, he is saved by an angel. Angel? No, former soldier Derek, someone who knows a lot about pain. When Derek ends up taking Kyle back home, Kyle (a computer whiz) decides he’s going to make himself so indispensable Derek will have no choice but to let him stay. There’s a big gap between these two, one that spans more than age. Kyle is young and comes from money. Derek, older and poorer. Kyle is a computer nerd with insecurities and an abusive family, Derek a physical man with PTSD and a lot of scars. There’s a lot of sex for the length of the story but it makes sense, since that is what Kyle is determined to use as part of making himself worthy of staying. Derek shows his gentle side here, his compassion. I liked Derek a great deal, particularly how he worked to overcome the horror of his history. Kyle, at 19 still immature at times, was what Derek needed. I enjoyed the epilogue and felt it fit their story.
A feel good erotic short of a stud military guy rescuing and heating it up wit a young geek (both of whom who have serious issues). Just a sweet little tale of two wounded guys sweeping each other off their feet, into the sack, and wiping the hurt away. Not bad when you're in the mood for a bit of saccharine wrapped up in a little sizzle (rather than heart-tugging character or relationship angst).
This had so much potential (loved the blurb) but it fell flat for me and missed the mark, for sure. I didn't get any emotional connection between the two MCs and it was just bland.
